Anzac Day 2010

Sydney’s largest New Town opens nearby

25th April. The march begins at the Silverdale Warragamba Neighbourhood Centre at 11am and follows the Blacktown City Pipe Band. After the service, the march goes to the Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club for refreshments with traditional 2-up and entertainment. Everyone is welcome to attend. The Penrith RSL dawn service leaves the RSL club in Lethbridge Street at 4.45am to march to Memory Park for the service at 5am. There is also a RSL march on Sunday 18th April, lining up at 2.30pm adjacent to the fire station in Evan Strret Penrith. This is an alternative to the dawn service on Anzac Day.

The biggest residential development in Sydney in the past 10 years has opened at Oran Park, near Cobbity along The Northern Road. Landcom, with the private landowner Greenfields Development Company, will build more than 7,500 homes around the site of the old race track. The $50 million first phase of Oran Park Town includes two school sites, a home display village, road infrastructure, playing fields, cycle paths, a seniors living precinct for up to 400 residents and the first commercial building in the town centre.

Simpson, Jesus and Two Donkeys On both ANZAC day and Good Friday, Australians remember the blood sacrifices of others by which we enjoy peace. The story of ‘Simpson and his donkey’ epitomises this self-sacrifice. Private John Simpson Kirkpatrick (1892-1915) of the 3rd Field Ambulance, landed at Galipoli on 25 April 1915. Simpson soon met a donkey, which he employed to carry the wounded from the battlefield. He found he could rescue the wounded faster by himself with a donkey than with a stretcher. He saved hundreds of lives. His bravery and good cheer were legendary. However, after four weeks, on 19 May 1915, Simpson was shot through the heart and killed as he was rescuing two wounded men. He was a soldier who bore no arms. The self-sacrifice we remember on Good Friday bears many similarities to Simpson’s. Jesus rode astride a gentle donkey into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:111). But outside Jerusalem on that first Good Friday, Jesus too was ‘killed in action’, so to speak. Jesus went to the cross unarmed, with the purpose of saving lives. As Jesus himself said,

‘For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many’ (Mark chapter 10 verse 45). But there was also a difference. Simpson left Australia for Galipoli to rescue his countrymen from the enemy. But Jesus left heaven for earth to rescue his enemies. As Paul says in Romans chapter 5 verses 7 and 8: ‘Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’ As sinners, we are God’s enemies (Romans 5:10). But God came into our world in the person of his Son, Jesus, not to rescue his allies, nor even good people, but his enemies. Jesus did this so we can have peace with God by simply trusting in him (Romans 4:5).

Lest we forget.

Beauty Treatments with a Healthy Side Effect While we all enjoy the obvious pampering of a beauty treatment, there are additional benefits that help to improve health too. So, this Mother’s Day treat Mum – and yourself – to a beauty treatment with a healthy side effect at Hopewood Health Retreat with the Mother and Daughter Day Visit special offer. Hopewood Health Retreat has been caring for the health of its guests for almost 50 years and traditional beauty treatments play an important role in maintaining the skin’s health. Facials, exfoliations and pedicures may help to ensure skin, feet and hands look great but they can also help to increase blood flow which nourishes the tissues and increases cellular regeneration. Lymph flow is also increased and waste products are carried away, reinforcing the external cleansing of the

skin. “Another side effect of beauty treatments is a reduction in stress levels and an increase in relaxation,” said Hopewood’s General Manager, Sharon Beavon. An exfoliation not only removes the build up of dead skin cells, soothing rough skin and leaving it soft and radiant, it can also help with detoxification through the skin. Body wraps not only help to refine and tone the skin and add moisture, they also aid in removing impurities and excess metabolic waste, improve blood circulation and can soothe muscle tension. During a facial, pores relax and open, oxygen is carried to the area and carbon dioxide is carried away. Skin becomes more receptive to the absorption of nourishing and hydrating products. Tense muscles are relaxed, increasing sebum and sweat which helps to remove dirt and grease, and maintain the moisture balance in the skin. If essential oils are used, they can have a calming, uplifting and soothing effect on the nervous system. With the average person taking 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day or

186,000 kilometres over a lifetime, feet take a beating and, according to Sharon, they are the most neglected part of the body. Regular pedicures are a great way to improve the appearance of feet, prevent foot odour, nail diseases and disorders. The foot and lower leg massage, stimulates blood and lymph circulation and works on the nervous system, helping to calm the body and reduce stress. “It’s not unusual for guests to feel so relaxed during their pedicure that they fall asleep,” said Sharon. Treat Mum – and yourself –with the Mother and Daughter Day Visit special offer. Spend a relaxing day at Hopewood with access to all facilities and activities, eat your way healthy with a delicious vegetarian smorgasbord for lunch and enjoy an indulging 55-minute body or face treatment. Valued at $184 per person, pay just $276 for the both of you when you buy a gift voucher before May 15. Or take Mum out for lunch to Hopewood on Mother’s Day (9 May) and treat her to the special gluten free main dishes, alcohol-removed wine and dessert for $35 per person. Emergency Services to be Independent

allowing the savings to be invested and benefit our frontline services.

The NSW Government has announced it has abolished the overarching department of Police and Emergency Services NSW.Emergency Services Minister, Steve Whan, said Police and Emergency Services agencies would continue to report directly to their respective Ministers. The recently established “super department” would be dissolved. Staff transferred to the super department will be re-deployed back into their respective agencies, and the independence of police and emergency services agencies would again be reinforced.“The Government has listened to the community and in particular our hard working emergency services frontline volunteers and staff,” Mr Whan said. This decision recognises the variety of reforms and differences in service delivery requirements between those needed in the NSW Police Force and those in the emergency services. The agencies will continue to work closely and co-operatively together as a cluster to achieve back office reforms

Girl Guides Centenary More than 2,000 NSW Girl Guides will join 10 million fellow guides in 145 separate countries around the world to celebrate the Year of the Girl Guide 2010 and the Global Centenary

of Guiding. The Minister for Youth and Volunteering, Peter Primrose, and the Member for Camden, Geoff Corrigan, joined the celebrations at Mount Annan Botanic Gardens on the 10th April marking the 100th day of the 100th year of international Guiding. Mr Primrose congratulated the Girl Guides on their Centenary and said it showed that after 100 years the organisation continued to have a strong and positive influence in the lives of many young girls and women. There are currently around 30,000 Girl Guide members in Australia with 10,000 of those in NSW. More than 1 million women in Australia have been Girl Guide members. “The Guides will be participating in a day of environmental and outdoor activities around the theme Plant,

Grow, Share,” Mr Primrose said. Activities include rope challenges, canoeing, and orienteering, rock climbing and bush walks. Girls and leaders from Warragamba Girl Guides attended the celebration. The Warragamba unit has vacancies for girls aged 7 to 15. They meet in the Guide hall on Monday or Wednesday evenings and enjoy activities and games which are fun but also teach leadership, teamwork, decision making, a respect for the environment, communication skills and a sense of community. Outdoor activities are an important part of the Australian Guide programme. The Southern Cross Rangers for girls aged 15 - 18 years has girls working on their Queen’s Guide award.

Guide Leader wanted Warragamba Girl Guides are such a great group but desperately need a new leader to keep the units going. No experience is needed as training is available. Females aged over 18 are welcome to apply. Please phone Margaret 4773 8974.

Change the size of your red waste bin during May Wollondilly Shire Council gives residents the opportunity to change the size, free of charge, of their general waste bin during the month of May each year. Property owners can request, in writing, that their bin size either be increased to 120 litres or decreased to 80 litres, and their rates adjusted accordingly. A saving of more than $30 presently occurs if an existing 120 litre red lidded general waste bin is replaced with an 80 litre bin. Bin sizes can be changed throughout the year; however, they will incur a $30 fee if it is requested outside the month of May. Residents wishing to change the size of the red lidded garbage bin should forward a written request by the property owner for bin size change to Council or complete the bin size change form available from Council’s Customer Service Section. This form can be downloaded from Council’s Web Page under Environmental Services – Waste and Recycling Collection Services. The changes to the service will commence from the 1 July 2010.

NutrientSmart Farms Just six months after starting, the NutrientSmart Farms project has stopped 20 tonnes of nitrogen and five tonnes of phosphorus from entering local waterways in the lower Hawkesbury-Nepean catchment each year. NutrientSmart Farms has so far invested $440,000 in 17 properties in the Hawkesbury, Penrith, Camden and Wollondilly areas. To date projects have been carried out with properties involved in dairy, grazing, vegetable and turf industries. Works have included effluent management system upgrades, fencing to exclude stock from waterways, alternative watering systems away from waterways, improving detention ponds to better filter run-off and replanting riverbank vegetation. The dam belonging to local landholders Carol and Eric Hayward was just 100 metres from the banks of the Nepean. If the dam had not been repaired and had failed, tonnes of nitrogen and phosphorus would have washed into the river. The $88,000 project has a 17 metre wide concrete spillway to deal with any run-off from the dam and prevent further erosion. Eric is very happy that his dam is no longer a danger to the river. The

cattle are now fenced off and local plants are stabilising the dam. Paul Bennett, Catchment Coordinator at the HNCMA says “we are still looking to invest a further $2 million in projects to manage nutrients over the next 18 months. “We are now calling on interested landholders across the project area to contact us,” said Mr Bennett. Funding is now available to landholders for works improving nutrient management including: * establishing perimeter vegetation, riverbank buffer zones and filter strips * soil conservation works * incorporating compost into soils * stock exclusion fences and offstream watering points * pasture re-establishment * upgrades to systems managing dairy effluent For further information contact the Smart Farms Information Line on 4725 3050 or visit www.dpi.nsw.gov. au/agriculture/resources/smartfarms. NutrientSmart Farms is part of the Hawkesbury-Nepean River Recovery Program which is funded by the Australian Government through its Water for the Future program.
