Longtime Jordan Springs resident, David Stead is a true inspiration to all. After a life long struggle with weight management and a nine year battle with alcohol, David Stead has lost over 80kg, an incredible accomplishment for the 27 year old. At nine years of age, David was diagnosed with a severe case of Perthes disease, a childhood disorder of the hip joint. He underwent over nine operations, including a hip reconstruction at the age of twelve, and was told he would be in a wheelchair by 21. Dave’s incredible determination and mental strength has seen him surpass medical expectations. He is very physically active and is a fierce obstacle racer. Dave is also a Master Trainer (qualified group fitness and personal trainer), Spartan SGX Certified Coach and Motivational Speaker. Dave has devoted his life to transformation. With the help of his Master Trainer partner, Julie Palmer, it is now their mission to empower others to do the same. HWPO Fitness provides a holistic system to nutrition, exercise and mental focus, and will help you regain control, and take that first step towards a happier, healthier life. FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to our first edition for 2016! I know the Christmas and New Year period raced by in a blur for many, and here we are, already facing what February has in store. The New Year period is always my favourite. A great time to refocus and set goals. The perfect opportunity to take on board any challenges from years gone by, learn and grow from them. It’s these challenges that have made us stronger and more determined to reach our newest goals. We are in the first weeks back to school for many students across our community, and who can forget that very first introduction to BIG school? We return with all of our regular columns that provide a great wealth of information across a broad cross-section of topics. This edition features an amazing story of self discovery and determination that is bound to help get you motivated this New Year, along with some highlights from the festivities that took place during the Christmas break. Enjoy your Community News, and remember, “If you change nothing, nothing changes”.

While it now seems like a distant memory, the twilight screening of the movie ‘Santa Clause’ at the Jordan Springs Town Centre and Lake Foreshore at the end of 2015 was a huge success. Hundreds of local residents grabbed their favourite chairs, picnic blankets, popcorn and drinks, gathering around the lake for a special screening of the movie. The amazing night of festivities, coordinated by Lend Lease kept families entertained and treated them to a host of activities, including stage performances, market stalls, BBQ fundraiser, mini massages, manicures, animal farm, water play, giant outdoor games, kids craft and so much more. It was a fantastic night out for families, both young and old. “We love bringing our family to events like this. It makes you feel both involved and safe. It’s such a great way to meet new friends said Jenny, who was accompanied by husband James and their two children Heather and Tom. The night was a resounding success. A big thank you to Lend Lease and all those involved who helped create a magical night.

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the third Sunday and 8am on the fourth Sunday The Jew appeals to the Torah encapsulated in what is known as the Old Testament. The Buddhist and Hindus to the Vedas and the Vedanta, the Muslim to the Koran, the Atheist to philosophical structures, while the Christian appeals to the Christ as recorded in what is known as the New Testament. To anyone this vast arena of appeal is to all intents and purposes an exhaustive study in which no one can claim to have total mastery! Yet the religious dimension and influence in life is one that cannot be ignored. In no matter what religious environment the factors of intolerance and ignorance can be used to hurt, particularly when utilized in the field of politics. Individually, religious sentiment is regulated to the environment is which the person is born and grows. Conversion as such is a fairly rare occurrence across religions except in circumstances where political agendas play a part. History gives many example of this. Essentially the history of religions centres on the perennial search to give some understanding to existence. Even the Atheist in defending atheism, is in fact searching for an answer that does not include the concept of theism, in order to gain understanding for existence. It can be argued perhaps, that in general most individuals caught up in the business of living rarely give time to consider the question and to all intent and purpose are content to live in the environment in which they find themselves.

BATHROOM &

In the long evolution of humans and the universe when taking the vast array of scriptural appeal from various religious systems [including atheism!], one important factor can be considered: along the axis of evolution, Jesus who is called the Christ, offers the ability to unify the individual and society in a personal relationship allowing true meaning for existence. It is in the act of worship by the Church that this ability is given impetus. Rev John Hebblewhite

JORDAN SPRINGS WATER SAFETY – NEPEAN AQUATIC CENTRE AND EVA BORYS SWIM SCHOOL

Article Written + Submitted by: Julie Fletcher from Nepean Aquatic Centre and Eva Borys Swim School A: 16 – 19 Lambridge Place, Penrith P: 4730 8900 E: julie@nepeanswim.com.au W: nepeanaquaticcentre.com.au

Drowning Statistics Despite our very best efforts to stay safe around the water, we have in recent weeks been tragically reminded that lives are still lost to drowning. Children under five are the age group that is most at risk of drowning and the majority occur in and around the home – commonly in home swimming pools. The Royal Life Saving Society’s 2015 report shows that a total of 271 Australian lives were lost between 1 July 2014 and 30 June 2015, with a 30 per cent increase in the number of young children who had died due to drowning. Most drowning deaths occurred in the summer months and Saturdays and afternoons were the most common times for drowning to take place. 80% of drowning deaths were male, and the highest percentage of cases occurred in NSW. I am always acutely aware reading this report that each and every case is so much more than a statistic, representing a very personal story that will have caused great sorrow for family, friends and communities of the person lost to drowning. Factors including lack of supervision, inadequate pool barriers, intoxication, swimming outside the flags, watercraft accidents, and swimming alone can all contribute to these alarming statistics. At home, pools and spas are obvious drowning hazards, but we must also be aware of many other items and areas which present a significant drowning threat to young children in and around the home, such as buckets, bathtubs, eskies, fountains, fishponds, drains, and inflatable pools, which should be emptied after each use.

So what do we do when an accident happens? Being prepared makes a huge difference, as every second counts following an immersion incident. If you haven’t already done so, why not enrol yourself in a Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) course so you are prepared in case of an emergency. CPR accreditation is current for a year, at which point it is a good idea to revise and refresh your skills. So let’s look after each other this month, and not relax too much around the water at any time of year.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 0409 986121 or 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com Last week I listened to a talk given by Professor Bruce Tonge. He was talking about parenting in general, and parenting a child with a disability more specifically. One thing, that Professor Tonge said, really rang a bell with me. He said ‘Parenting is an active process’. How true is that? Nothing in life is achieved by sitting down, and this is especially true of parenting. Children don’t grow themselves up, and parenting gets harder as your children get older. You only get out of it what you put into it, and children do better in every way when their parents are actively involved in their lives. When you think of everything your children need to learn about themselves and the world, the mind boggles. And parents are their children’s first teacher. It is not up to school to teach children everything. Getting along with others, managing emotions, practical skills, literacy, self-care, etc., doesn’t start when children go to preschool or school. Learning starts from birth. And children don’t always learn stuff by being specifically instructed. They learn it in relationship with us, their parents. They learn it in the daily interactions – all day, every day. It’s not something that you turn on once per week on Sunday. As a parent you are always ‘on’. What an awesome responsibility this work of raising children is. But there is a fine balance isn’t there? Between being ‘too much’ and ‘too little’. How do we achieve ‘just enough’? There is a strategy in the Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) parenting course called “incidental teaching”. It’s such a gentle and nurturing strategy of getting alongside your child. Finding out what she knows, and scaffolding her to learn more and develop competence and self-esteem, without being overprotective, overbearing, or dismissive. When we achieve ‘just enough’, there is an exchange of energy that is both nurturing and rewarding, for both parent and child. And it actually requires less mental and physical effort from us. I think it is called ‘going with the flow’. Here is a testimonial from a parent who did Triple P in last year… “Triple P is going well. Our house is so much quieter than it used to be :). Had such a beautiful moment … my eldest son said this to his dad “Mum, she does discipline us, she is just much nicer about it. She talks to us nicer and we respond better, it’s what she learnt at Triple P.” I had tears of joy in my eyes, thank you so very much! My two boys are more responsible, more positive towards each other, are learning new skills and are allowed to do more things now that I have more consistent boundaries in place. They both appreciate and respect the logical consequence system. My eldest boy with ADHD is rarely in time-out or quiet time and true meltdowns are rare now too.” Sarah, (September 2015) If you would like to learn more about parenting strategies that can help you to spend more time and energy on the things that matter, check out “Triple P” on the Resourcing Parents website (http://resourcingparents.nsw.gov.au/).

Shortlisted Tenderers Announced for The Northern Road Upgrade

Upgrade underway. Image source: www.fionascott.com.au

The $1.6 billion The Northern Road upgrade is moving ahead, with three contractors selected to tender for the design and construction of Stage 3 North between Penrith and Glenmore Park, named last month. The three companies shortlisted are Fulton Hogan, Leighton Contractors and Lend Lease Engineering. The Northern Road upgrade is a major component of the Australian and New South Wales governments $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan, which will provide essential road improvements for one of Australia’s fastest growing regions before the proposed Western Sydney Airport opens in the mid-2020s. Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott MP said, “Last year it was announced that The Northern Road Stage 3 North would be accelerated by up to 18 months and today’s announcement further highlights the Australian and New South Wales governments’ commitment to improving Western Sydney road infrastructure”. Once complete the 35km upgrade of The Northern Road will increase road capacity, reduce congestion and improve safety for motorists travelling between Narellan and Penrith. Federal Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott MP said, “I am proud to be part of a government that has listened, understood and is actually delivering an upgraded road. I uncovered this issue talking to residents, especially around Glenmore Park, completely frustrated by poor access in and out

of their suburb. I am pleased to say we are putting in the hard yards and actually doing something about it. “There is much needed relief coming for those forced to endure daily congestion around Glenmore Parkway, M4, Bradley Street and excitingly extending the upgrade through to Jamison Road. “That extension has resulted from strong advocacy after meeting residents and schools in Kingswood and South Penrith,” Fiona Scott said The upgrade will also provide a high-quality connection with the M12 Motorway, linking The Northern Road with the M7 Motorway. These investments will provide the region with high-quality transport connections and create additional job opportunities for the local area as more projects move into construction. Commuters, pedestrians and cyclists will all benefit, as the project includes a continuous kerbside bus lane in each direction and off-road shared paths. Once the tenders are received, Roads and Maritime will assess the proposals, with construction expected to start in the first half of 2017 following completion of the detailed design. The Northern Road upgrade, which will reach final completion in late 2019, is being jointly funded by the Australian and New South Wales governments, with $1.23 billion and $351 million being contributed respectively. For more information on projects being delivered under the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan visit www.rms.nsw.gov.au/ wsip.

The most popular theory about Valentine's Day origin is that Emperor Claudius II didn't want Roman men to marry during wartime. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret weddings. For this, Valentine was jailed and executed. While in jail he wrote a note to the Jailor's Daughter signing it

4 Reasons Why Kids Should Play with Dolls Dolls are fabulous toys for both girls and boys, especially those going through grief. Dolls teach children things about life, emotions, love, loss and problem solving within their environment. They develop cognitive and motor skills, language skills, caring and nurturing skills, and teach children how to navigate through strong and challenging emotions. Playing with dolls teaches children about their own world and the world they’re growing into. 1. Develops cognitive and motor skills through: Dressing and undressing dolly, Brushing hair, Feeding dolly with a spoon, Bathing dolly, Potty training, Pretend play, Manipulating dolly to stand, sit and move. 2. Develops language skills: Playing with dolls helps in pretend play by making opportunities to learn, use and practice speech and language skills, which expands their vocabulary. Children learn this by: Naming and recognising body parts, Teaching items of clothing e.g. shirt, blanket, singlet e.t.c., Answering What? Where? Why? Questions. For example “What is dolly doing?” “Where is dolly?” “Why is dolly crying?”, Dolly can interact with other toys to learn “Where?” dolly is in relation to the other toys e.g. Dolly is next to the car, Learning verbs (action words) like “Dolly looks hungry, does she want something to eat?” 3. Developing caring and nurturing skills by: Taking responsibility for their doll, Copying parenting behaviour (It’s important for parents to take notice of how children play because it gives you huge clues into how they (the child) sees you as a parent and guide), Learn respect and responsibility 4. Developing emotional intelligence: Children often feel overlooked by adults who are dealing with grief. They’re overwhelmed by their emotions and feelings. Playing with dolls helps children bring emotions down to a manageable size. Dolls offer support by: Listening to the child’s problems, Being their as a companion, Acting out what the adults are doing, Searching for answers. I believe that both girls and boys should play with dolls to help them learn empathy, compassion, fine motor skills, social skills and emotional intelligence.

Temporary Pools an Waiting to Happen

Accident

Inflatable pools may take only moments to set up but can take away a lifetime if proper safety procedures aren’t followed. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown said temporary and inflatable pools require the same standards of fencing as permanent, in-ground pools to ensure they’re safe. “If a pool can hold 300mm deep of water, it must have complying safety fencing and gates in place, as required by law,” Councillor McKeown said. “It’s not about stopping you having fun, it’s about potentially saving people, mainly children from drowning or suffering lifetime horrific injuries with a near-drowning. “Parents must also be vigilant at all times whenever there is water in the pool, please watch your children, even if they’re confident swimmers, accidents can happen.” “Many people don’t realise when they buy one of these inflatable pools that it’s illegal to have an unfenced pool in a suburban backyard, this is not only to make sure your own family members are safe but also others who may come into your yard.” For more information on safety requirements please visit https:// www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/Services/Health-and-Safety/Pool-safety/ or call Council on 4732 7897

Beat The Heat This Summer With the bulk of summer still ahead, Penrith Council encourages residents to remember NSW Health’s four-step recommendations to “Beat the Heat”. 1. Drink plenty of water 2. Keep cool 3. Take care of others 4. Have a plan Like many other urban centres, Penrith is getting hotter, so the recommendations are particularly relevant. Indeed, since 1965, the number of days where the temperature has

reached over 35 degrees in western Sydney has increased by at least 250%. This is due, in part, to what is known as the “Urban Heat Island Effect” – an increase in heat absorbing surfaces such as pavements, roads and buildings with little or no shade. Penrith Council’s Cooling the City Strategy is being used to combat this effect. Mayor, Cr Karen McKeown described the strategy, adopted last year, as broad reaching. “It influences all Council planning and promotes natural cooling through landscaping, the addition of water features and clever design,” she said. “Of course, we can’t cool the city overnight, so part of the strategy is to support the health and wellbeing of our community when the heat hits. The NSW Health recommendations are a great place to start.” NSW Health “Beat the Heat” tips include to: • Drink plenty of cool fluid (not alcohol, tea or coffee as they are dehydrating) • Eat water rich foods, like salad and fruit • Carry a water bottle if you go out • Wear light coloured, loose fitting clothes, a hat and sunscreen if outside • Put a cool, wet cloth or towel on your face, neck or limbs • Check in on elderly friends, neighbours or relatives • Encourage children to drink more • Never leave children or pets alone in a car, even with the airconditioning on • Close windows and blinds during the day • Stay indoors in the hottest part of the day (between 11am and 5pm), Use an air-conditioner or stay in the coolest room in the house • Spend time in an air-conditioned space like a library, shopping centre or cinema • Know who to call if you need help and seek help if you feel unwell. Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 4736 2027 $2110 Guide Dog Donation from the Santa Photos with Pets Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2015 and photos were taken with your pets. We all enjoyed watching your pets get dressed up with Santa hats and scarves and sitting on Santa’s knee for a photo. With a lot of laughs and giggles, we took many cute Santa photos. Thank you for all of the donations for the photos. With your great support, we raised $2110 for The Guide Dogs NSW/ACT!! Wow!! We all had lots of fun and The Guide Dogs get a great donation. Thanks again for participating. Too much fun!!

Leo The Guide Dog Puppy Camille is a puppy raiser for the Guide Dogs. She has been looking after Leo since October 2015 and he graduated from Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in November 2015. The Guide Dogs have organized numerous outings for the puppies, and Leo attended the Meet The Pups Day at Glossodia Guide Dogs Centre in November, a training session at Penrith Christian School in November, Christmas in the park at Surry Hills in December and a walk through the

streets of Penrith in December. It is great to see Leo catch up with his litter mates and be exposed to different environments. Leo is growing up so fast, he is through the chewing phase of life (well nearly!!), he is finally toilet trained and he is a cheeky little puppy. Camille’s other dog Pony is finally playing with Leo. Camille lost 2 of her other dogs (Callie and Bella) this year and when the new puppy arrived Pony was sooo not interested. Pony was never nasty to Leo, he just ignored him totally. Every day without fail, Leo would go up to Pony at least 100 times and say 'Hi my name is Leo, do you want to play?' and Pony would turn his head away and ignore Leo. It took Pony 7 weeks to start playing with Leo, and when they started to play together it was as if they were friends forever. Full on wrestling matches around the house and yard, sharing the beds, and licking each other's faces. Too cute! Pony obviously needed time to get over the loss of his 2 friends and accept the new pack member. Leo will be returned to The Guide Dogs when is about 1 year of age, where he will continue his training and hopefully succeed as a Guide Dog. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.
