Pugsley Buzzard at The Clarendon
Pugsley Buzzard is a piano player and singer with a distinctive sound. He plays funky New Orleans grooves, barrelhouse blues and Harlem stride and modern stylings that feature loads of tantalising improvisation. Pugsley’s shows are exciting and captivating, at the centre is his huge mesmerizing voice and dazzling piano playing. Pugsley describes himself as "a grizzly bear in a pork pie hat rummaging through a piano." A fascinating character of imposing stature with a huge rich and raspy blues drenched baritone voice that can make the ladies sigh and and grown men cry. A bone shaking shaman howling the blues and an eccentric raconteur who never fails to entertain and delight his audiences. Predominantly Pugsley writes his own tunes but also interprets classic material which he describes as…’Like putting the head of Count Basie on the body of Liza Minnelli and dressing the resulting creature in a suit of armour, a tutu and a fez.” Pugsley has a background in avante - garde classical music having played on the new music scene as well as working as a bass player and multi – instrumentalist in rock bands in Perth and Melbourne playing accordion, keyboards, guitar, tenor banjo, trumpet, flugel horn, flute, percus-
sion, harmonica, kazoos and whistles. Pugsley has also conducted his own avante- garde chamber orchestra and composed soundtracks for film and theatre. Some years ago he began travelling round Australia and Europe and started singing and accompanying himself on piano. The response was hugely positive and immediate
and he has been in great demand ever since. A festival favourite performing at Jazz, Blues and Roots, Folk Festivals around Australia and overseas. Last year he appeared at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival with sell out performances of his cabaret show “Noir”. He also thrilled audiences at the Himalayan Blues festival in Kathmandu. The recently released CD " Wooden Kimono" has received critical acclaim from the music industry.
Summer Harvest Kitchen Workshops
In January and February, Slow Food Blue Mountains and Cittaslow Blue Mountains will again host a series of food related workshops aimed at locals and visitors alike. Held in various venues across the mountains, they are part of ‘A Kitchen Garden in every Blue Mountains Home’ project. Both Slow Food and Cittaslow want to see most mountain residents growing much of their own produce and – as there’s no point growing produce if you don’t know what to do with it – the Summer Harvest Kitchen Workshops are a critical part of the plan. For visitors, it’s an opportunity to learn something while staying in this magnificent region. As these events are in high demand, so please book early and RSVP is by payment only. Gift Vouchers are available to each event which would make a great Christmas Present. Email bluemountains@ slowfoodaustralia.com.au to find out more.

New community care centre
People struggling on the margins in the mountains community will be able to access much needed community services with the opening of a new ANGLICARE community centre in November. The latest parish partnership project with St Hilda’s Anglican Church, Katoomba, the new service will be based at the church and operate three days a week. It will offer counselling and relationship support services, family accommodation support and the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre will also operate from the site. For St Hilda’s minister Ray Robinson, the partnership is a welcome opportunity for the church to reach out to the mountains community and care for others in need. “We are excited about this development of the work we’ve already started through the partnership we have with the Katoomba ANGLICARE Shop,” says Mr Robinson. “Katoomba has a vast range of needs from a significant part of the population that suffer from mental health issues to single parents struggling to look after their families. There are also a lot of retirees who are getting older and looking after a loved one.” ANGLICARE program manager Kylie Gregson says the provision of a local face to care for people with local issues is a positive development.
Pilates Life At Pilates Life mat classes you will learn to take control of your body with the proven Pilates Method exercises and latest Posture and Flexibility based stretches. • Foundation Courses for beginners • Continuing Classes for experienced students • Back Into Action Classes - Ideal for rehabilitation, post natal, returning to exercise, ongoing physical issues. Private lessons available for fitness and/or rehabilitation. • 1300 2 PILATES • Mobile 0408 979 458 • www.pilateslife.com.au “This is the first time ANGLICARE will be providing community services to people in the Blue Mountains. Prior to this families had to travel to Penrith where the nearest ANGLICARE service is located. It is just one way we are lifting the extra burden on families in the mountains who need to travel to get assistance,” says Kylie. According to Mr Robinson the provision of a range of different services from the new ANGLICARE office will go a long way to help many in need in the local area. “The people in my congregations tell me of the needs they see around them, they’re a caring and concerned people who are very supportive of Anglicare’s helping those doing it tough.” says Mr Robinson. “Not only do we look to care for people practically, we also hope to care from them in their spiritual journey as well.”

What Would Happen to Your Family if You Had Died Yesterday? What would be the financial outcome for your partner? Your children? What if you were injured or sick? How long could you live with no income? Most people think about these things but do little about it. Figures show that only four in ten families with dependent children have enough insurance cover to last longer than one year1 and only 31% of people have Income Protection Insurance2. Of these, many would be covered for only two years. You can reduce potential financial hardship for yourself and your family by obtaining Personal Risk Insurance. Insurance can cover your life, your partner’s life, sickness or injury (Income Protection), disability and even certain medical conditions (Trauma Insurance). One of the main purposes of insurance is to provide a level of income to the insured or their family to allow them to continue their lifestyle without additional financial suffering. Many people will also choose a level of cover to allow them to clear their debts. A Financial Planner can help you select the level of insurance cover that best suits your personal or business needs. At Mondy Walpole Financial Services we can assist with Business Insurance, Self Managed Superannuation and Superannuation, Retirement Planning and Investments. 1

Love Long Ago
Helen Mountford, owner of retro frock shop ‘Very Fashion’ in Katoomba was recently pulling up the fabulous 50s lino in her bedroom when she unearthed a postage-sized wad of mint condition paper. Unfolding it, it revealed a love letter circa 1960. The writer was one Neil Gordon “aged 6 years and 10 ½ months” of the same address. In his letter Neil professes his love of “Karen”. “You are now my partner,” Neil declares to the world. Knowing the Gordon family had previously owned her house, Helen resolved to return the secret love letter to its owner. Many phone calls and a lead from a long serving teacher at Katoomba Public School put Helen in touch with Ian Gordon. “Yes, Neil’s my brother,” Ian said. He was charmed to read the tiny script. How well he remembered his childhood in the house. But he didn’t know who “Karen” was. His brother Neil’s life had not run smoothly in the intervening 50 years. He was a quiet reclusive man. Ian would let him know of Helen’s good deed and this memento of love’s long ago first bloom. He would keep it in a safe place. The family recently visited Helen at her house and have asked to bring the grandkids back one day to climb the tree the brothers used to.

Neighbourhood Centre project receives $5,000 Positive Ageing Grant
The Minister for Ageing, Peter Primrose, and the Member for Blue Mountains, Phil Koperberg, recently handed over a $5,000 cheque to Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre for a project that encourages older people to remain active and engaged in their community. Mr Koperberg said that the project Connected Through Stories: Connected Through Home aimed to reduce social isolation, enable community connectedness and enhance quality of life for local older people. “This project aims at connecting generations through a book club with isolated elderly members, young parents and other members of the broader aged community meeting regularly to discuss the issues raised in their reading,” he said. “It particularly focuses on building • We supply and fit Domestic & Industrial Birds, subfloor Solar relationships Vents, Direct Vent kits. New Driveway helps Katoomba Rural Fire Brigade
On Saturday 20th November 2010, South Katoomba Rural Fire Brigade officially thanked The Gully Group for their support of the acquisition of their new driveway with an afternoon tea, a Certificate of Appreciation and ribboncutting ceremony. The Gully Group, traditional owners of Catalina Park and the surrounding area in Katoomba, were recognised for their tireless efforts and constant lobbying to Blue Mountains City Council. Representing The Gully Group were Aunty Sharyn Halls, Merle Williams, Uncle Ron Fletcher and Aunty Carol Cooper. Frank Garofalow from BMCC was also in attendance. “Thank you to the Gully Group for their support and their significant contribution to the driveway”, said Steve Parrott, Captain of South Katoomba RFB, as Aunty Sharyn and Uncle Ron cut the ribbon. The South Katoomba RFB, located on the outskirts of Catalina Park, would have to drive their 5 tonne fire trucks down the rocky, dangerous driveway and out through the Blue Mountains Recreation Centre car park. On occasion, the entrance to the fire station would be blocked by parked cars, and there were a few near-misses with children in the car park. Aunty Sharyn and Merle alerted the BMCC to the problem and, with much effort and lobbying on their part, funding of $60000 was awarded to the South Katoomba RFB to concrete a safer, alternate driveway to the fire station.

There is a saying that goes something like this- “Sticks and stone will break my bones, but faces and names won’t hurt me”, whereas a stick or stone might cause physical pain and an exclamation of ‘OUCH’, the subtleties of facial expressions from others, and their words, can have a far more reaching effect creating or destroying our potential. Communicating a message can be by the spoken word, the written word or by body and facial expression. We influence others and ourselves by the spoken words we use, and anything that causes that inner dialogue to chatter; that self-talk, is so powerful because what we say to ourselves will affect our thinking, our responses, our abilities and ultimately the results in our life. It is important to choose words that enhance our vision and stimulate the creativity within us. Words can motivate us; words can retard and hold us back; ill chosen words can strip us of our confidence and leave us feeling depressed and bad about our selves. Well chosen words can lift us, bring feelings of joy, hope and love; and
pump up the passion to achieve, and aspire to Great and Greater things. It is interesting to note that in the Bible, it is written; “In the beginning was the Word and the Word became flesh”. We speak it, it becomes it, and it takes on the character. There is a direct link between words and thinking. For example the word ‘Noise’ and the word ‘Sound’, in a sentence “We hear a noise”, or “We hear a sound”. Or for example the words ‘Problem’ and ‘Challenge’, put into a sentence, - “We have a problem”, or “We have a challenge”. So by choosing a different word the impact is different and leads to different impressions and results. Well-chosen words will impact positively. Well chosen words will enhance, and motivate enthusiasm, and interest, impacting positively on a person’s thinking and actions and ultimately the results. Words effect our beliefs, our belief about ourselves, about others and about life. So choose words wisely and choose words that paint the kind of reality you seek.
