Glenmore Park Town Centre Christmas Appeal Sadly thousands of families will go without receiving gifts or have very limited food to celebrate this holiday simply because they can’t afford it.

This year, with your help, we aim to collect as many gifts and non perishable food items as possible on behalf of the Rotary Club WallaciaMulgoa Valley.

They will be distributing these goods between the Salvation Army

and the Penrith Women’s Refuge so that they may be delivered to disadvantaged families in the local and greater community.

Glenmore Park Town Centre has been supporting the Rotary Christmas Appeal for the past two years and hope to make this year even bigger and better.

Glenmore Parks Padre Pio Catholic Church is receiving an MBA Excellence in Construction Awards for a public building over $3 million. Local business support has played a large part in the church receiving the award. The church was completed before Christmas last year at a cost of $4.7 million.

Many areas of the construction were donated by local businesses and many aspects of the design created challenges for those fitting out the church.

The Church is home for 700 Glenmore Park Catholics and the Church would like to thank all those who helped them during construction.

Charity Hot Rod & Custom Car show There was a fantastic turn out for this annual fundraising event, with just as many kids as car enthusiasts attending.

Street name winners There was an overwhelming response to the ‘Name your Street’ competition run by the Glenmore Ridge Sales and Information Centre. 26 people won a Giant bicycle thanks to Panther Cycles in Penrith. Dean and Denise from Dino’s Pizza started this event 5 years ago to raise funds to purchase vital medical equipment after their son Nicholas was born with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and was rushed to Nepean Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit.

“We are still very keen to show our gratitude to the staff that saved our little boy” explains Dean and Denise Hodge from local pizza shop Dino’s Pizza.

“We raised just over $7000 for the premature babies at Nepean Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with all car entrants paying $10 entry fee There were just over 200 cars entered into the competition and at least another 100 just on display!”

Other funds were raised through raffle tickets and sales of tickets for children’s entertainment – face painting, jumping castle, animal petting zoo and the ever popular bungee trampoline.

Australia hottest dance sensation “The Next Step” directed by Dein Perry of Tapdogs fame performed to large crowds over the course of the day.

The cheques were presented to Raylene Vidler on behalf of Ronald McDonald House Westmead and Julie Clarke President of NNICUP’s.

Together they will liaise with the NICU to determine the best needs for the funds.

On behalf of Glenmore Park Town Centre Management, I would like to personally thank Dean and Denise for all their hard work and assistance. It is because of them that this event has become such a great success not to mention well noted event for the local community to get involved in.

Another win for Natasha Natasha Duarte has been awarded second place in the 2010 Australian Children’s Music Foundation National Songwriting Competition in which 11,000 schools across Australia took part.

15 year old Natasha from the Australian Institute of Performing Arts, Harris Park was awarded second place with her piece ‘Take It Away’. Natasha wrote it to perform with her band members. It is one of their songs on their new EP. An unprecedented number of Australian students from primary and secondary schools around the country entered the free songwriting competition this year with over $35,000 worth of prizes including music equipment, tuition and recording opportunities being awarded to the winners in the competition’s 12 categories.

The judging was enhanced by the presence of Federal School Education, Early Childhood and Youth Minister and former Midnight Oil frontman, the Hon Peter Garrett MP. The Department of Education, Employment

and Workplace Relations is a major sponsor of the ACMF and Minister Garrett played an active role in determining some of the winning entries.

“I’m pleased my Department supports the ACMF’s National Songwriting Competition. The competition is important because it provides the opportunity for creative expression and lifts our spirits. We’ve got some talented students in our schools and the competition gives them a chance to have their music heard by leading professionals in the music industry,” said Minister

Garrett.

Other leading professionals in the Australian music industry including Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson, Paulini, Mark Gable and Peter Northcote were joined by a number of ACMF Ambassadors to review the students work.

ACMF Founder, Don Spencer OAM said “The competition gives kids a chance to write about their feelings and ideas and to celebrate their musical interests and talents. Beyond that, we’re reminding parents, teachers and policymakers that music plays an integral role in developing young minds and fostering better educational

outcomes, especially the areas of literacy and numeracy. ” The ACMF National Songwriting Competition is an annual, free competition open to every Primary, Secondary and Specific Purpose School across Australia (approximately 11,000 schools). New Child Restraint Laws The NSW Government has updated Child Restraint Laws, which commenced on 1st March 2010. The new Laws require ALL children under seven years of age to be secured in a suitable child restraint or booster seat when travelling in a vehicle.

Drivers will need to ensure that children younger than four years of age do not travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows. Drivers will also need to ensure that children aged four years to under seven years of age do not travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows unless all other back seats are occupied by children younger than seven years. An unrestrained child sitting in the rear seat of a vehicle can hit the driver with force equivalent to the weight of a baby elephant. Surveys carried out by Kidsafe have found that some 69% of all child restraints inspected were found to be incorrectly fitted and some 25% would have put the child at risk of death or serious injury in an accident. Most importantly, properly fitted child restraints can reduce the risk of death

or serious injury in road crashes by up to 70%. It is therefore vitally important to have all child restraints fitted, if not inspected, by a trained professional.

Christmas Card Competition Winner Glenmore Park Public School student Sarah Sorini is the winner of the 2010 Lindsay Christmas Card design competition.

Sarah’s winning design of a Christmas tree was chosen out of hundreds of entries from local primary school students and now features on the front of Mr Bradbury’s Christmas cards for 2010.

Sarah was awarded a $50 book voucher, as well as winning a $150 book voucher for her school.

“I invited all year 4 primary school students in my electorate to submit a design for the cover of my 2010 Christmas cards,” said Mr Bradbury.

“There were many outstanding entries, and I’d like to thank all the schools and their students who partici-

pated in the competition.

“Sarah’s artwork was bright and cheerful and summed up the Christmas spirit, and I would like to congratulate her on winning this year’s competition.”

Kickboxing Champ 17 year old Brendon McClean has been kickboxing for 4 years and has already been the NSW State champion twice. Brendon went to Glenmore Park Primary and High School and is now an apprentice painter and decorator. He won the East Coast title earlier this year and is now focussing on improving his fitness and expertise this year and trains 5 days a week at

the Elite Fight Gym. He was recently beaten by a Thai boxer who has 200 fights to his name who gave Brendon a ‘bit of a hiding.’

He said “It is all good experience!”

Public consultation called on new Solaria Regulation The Minister for Climate Change and the Environment and Minister Assisting the Minister for Health (Cancer), Frank Sartor has released a consultation document that proposes further measures to tighten controls around the use of ultraviolet tanning units.

Tanning beds used in solariums are classed as a Grade 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research in Cancer. Australia has the highest rate of melanoma in the world in men and the second highest rate in women.

Under the proposed regulatory changes the range of restrictions would be extended to include: People with Skin Photo Type 2 (skin that burns easily and tans minimally) from 1 April 2011; People aged under 25 from 1 April 2011; and People aged under 30 years from 1 August 2011

Padro Pio Parish There is a knock on Heaven’s door and St. Peter looks out and a man is standing there. St. Peter is about to begin his interview when the man disappears. A short time later there’s another knock.

St. Peter gets the door, sees the man, opens his mouth to speak, and the man disappears once again. A few minutes later, another knock. Once again St. Peter opens the door and sees the same man. “Hey, are you playing games with me?” St. Peter calls after him. “No,” the man’s distant voice replies anxiously. “They’re trying to resuscitate me..”

And so ends another year! This has been the quickest I remember a year passing! A lot has happened. We have a new church, a new hall, a new St Vincent de Paul conference, and lots of new people as numbers participating in the community are growing rapidly. Sadly, a number of people who were reading the Glenmore Gazette this time last year are now in Heaven (hopefully!) We have lost

a number of much loved members to the next 40 years! In conclusion, let cancer and others to heart attacks and me thank you all for a great year in even car accidents. As we approach Glenmore Park. Households Improve Efficiency with Government Rebates

Trade Training Centre Glenmore Park High School is excited about the new Trade Training Centre which will provide support for metals and engineering courses.

Students at seven Western Sydney high schools are benefitting from a new Australian Government funded $7 million trade training centre opened by the Minister for School Education, Peter Garrett. “This project will deliver qualifications that will help address engineering skill shortages across Australia,” Mr Garrett said.

Minister for Climate Change and the Environment, Frank Sartor announced NSW households have now claimed more than 300,000 Government rebates to green their homes.

“With the help of $140 million in NSW Government rebates to date, families in NSW are saving a combined 352,000 tonnes of carbon pollution and around four billion litres of water,” Mr Sartor said.

“The rebates have provided an effective and helpful incentive for people to choose more environmentally-friendly options in their homes.

“By targeting the biggest water and energy uses in the homes – such as hot water and toilet flushing – they are delivering the biggest savings.”

Every NSW household can claim up to $1,500 worth of rebates, including: • $300 to replace an electric hot water system with climate-friendly solar, heat pump and 5 star gas hot water systems • up to $1500 for rainwater tanks that are connected to a washing machine and toilet • $35 to have your old second working fridge recycled (where Fridge Buyback is available www.fridgebuyback.com.au) • $200 for a 4 star dual flush toilet to replace a single Federal Minister for Education, Mr Peter Garrett with Mitchell Robinson and Sarah Ljubojevic (Captains of Glenmore Park High flush toilet School) • $150 for installing a hot water circulator unit for instantaneous gas hot water heaters.

Merry Christmas from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital Staff Christmas Party Wow what a wonderful year we have had at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, so many new changes and renovations.

We had our work Christmas Party at the end of November, and we had a great time. We spent the day at The Hopewood Health Centre at Mulgoa. Not that we are health fanatics, but just wanted to enjoy a relaxing fun day at a day spa.

We giggled our heads off during the yoga class, especially when Camille got stuck in the lotus position. We had lots of fun doing aqua aerobics, and Pete nearly emptied the pool with a dive bomb. We all had a Swedish massage and Carly was so relaxed she fell asleep and nearly fell off the table. Trent went back several times to the smorgasboard buffet lunch and then nearly sank to the bottom of the pool during an afternoon swim.

After battling it out on the tennis court in a nail biting final, worthy of Wimbledon, Belinda and Justine thrashed Carly and Eden. We then had a 1 hour relaxing facial which we all enjoyed thoroughly, and we now look and feel 10 years younger.

We then gave out our Secret Santa

Christmas presents, and we are still trying to work out who gave Justine the black and white teddy.

Santa Photos With Your Pets Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December to take photos with your pets. Santa will be here from Saturday 4th December until Saturday 18th December 2010.

Photos of your pets are to be taken with Santa from Monday to Friday 5-6pm and on Saturdays 10am-12pm. No appointment is necessary for the Santa photos,

just drop in and don’t forget to bring your camera if you want extra photos.

Safety for Your Pets During the Festive Season Snakes - The warmer weather means that snakes are emerging from hibernation. Be aware that we live in a semi-rural area, and snakes will be about. A snake bite to your pet can be deadly, so fast veterinary attention is required to administer snake antivenom.

Dangerous food items – Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Even if you do not feed your dog chocolate, they may have access to it in presents under the tree, Christmas tables, and in kids school bags. Early veterinary attention will ensure your dog vomits up the offending chocolate and your dog has a better chance of survival.

- Fatty food – A large fatty meal to your dog or cat can result in a painful debilitating disease called pancreatitis.

Do not feed your pets the fatty skin from the Christmas ham. Your dog will eat anything you offer, so a common rule of thumb is “if you would not eat it, then your pet should not eat it either”.

- Cooked bones – Never feed your pets cooked bones, as they can cause a gastrointestinal upset and even a perforated bowel, resulting in a painful death.

- Onions – The toxin destroys red blood cells resulting in anemia.

- Grapes and raisins – The toxin damages the kidneys resulting in irreversible kidney failure and death.

- Macadamia nuts – Results in vomiting and severe gastrointestinal upset.

- Xylitol – a sugar free sweetener which stimulates insulin secretion resulting in low blood glucose.
