Spelling Champion Congratulations to 12 year old Jordan Powell from Warragamba Public School who has won the 2010 Premier’s Spelling Bee Championship.

This is Jordan’s fourth consecutive win and he is the first student to win both the Junior and Senior Finals. His winning word was dichotomy when his opponent stumbled on emphysema!

Yet more Cemeteries Another cemetery development has been applied for at 41 Greendale Road, Luddenham for 25,000 plots.

This is the 6th cemetery planned for the area within Liverpool Council.

A development application within the Penrith Council area has been made on Elizabeth Drive for a 35,000 plot cemetery, crematorium, and memorial gardens. The local residents are extremely concerned as it will affect the Luddenham Model Park and the area’s rural character. Noise from farm activities will be restricted and the traffic will increase.

Following residents’ anger about the lack of notice and the short period of time for objections, the council has extended the notification period until the end of January.

I grew up in the rural areas of my country.

My parentage was very early called into question because I was conceived out of wedlock.

My family was poor.

Because of government threats, my family fled our home and went into hiding. I became an international fugitive.

After a change of government I returned and resettled in my hometown.

I was one of five brothers and at least two sisters.

Although I did not have schooling, as a 12 year old I impressed lawyers, academics and ecclesial officials with my learning.

However, I continued my apprenticeship as a carpenter until I was 30 years of age.

At that point, I embarked on public life.

Although not professionally trained, I was highly successful in a number of different fields.

I provided regular medical treatment, I was a famous public speaker and teacher.

Dam levels rising

On Monday 6 December the students from Mulgoa Public School entertained the Seniors Group in Mulgoa Hall. The students gave a wonderful performance with Christmas songs and handed out gifts. The Seniors presented them with a book for the library, plus a drink and chocolate for all the students The Seniors Group then had Christmas lunch at the Edmund Rice Centre Winbourne provided by the Christian Brothers.

Minister for Water Phil Costa announced Sydney’s dams are at their highest level in more than a year.

Minister Costa said “Over the past week, we had an additional 50 billion litres of water flow into our dams – that’s the equivalent of about six weeks’ supply. In the first couple of days of December, we saw around 57 millimetres of rainfall over the Warragamba catchment – this is a staggering amount of rain, given the long term average rainfall for the whole month of December is 65 millimetres.

“This follows on from a wetter than average spring – this spring we saw 240 millimetres falling over the Warragamba catchment, which is well above the long term median of 192 millimetres.

“This good rainfall has seen total storage levels increase by 2.3 percent to 61.6 percent this week and we expect to see a further increase in storage levels next week.

Mr Costa explained the catchments are capable of absorbing a great deal of water and when the catchments are dry it takes a significant amount of rain to generate good inflows.

“To put it in perspective, we would need to see at least 4 days of 50 millimetres per day rainfall across the entire 16,000 square kilometre catchment area to see the total storage level reach 100 percent.”

Warragamba Dam was last at 100 percent of capacity in 1998.

Holy Family School 2010 has been an exciting and busy time at Holy Family School. There have been many celebrations and events including Grandparent Day, Catholic Schools Week, as well as the completion of our refurbishment to learning spaces and the construction of our new school Hall.

Born 7 November 2010 Much adored by his Grandparents, Aunties and Uncles Councillor Judy Hannan standing as MP Judy Hannan a councillor and previous Mayor of Wollondilly announced her intention to run as an independent in the upcoming state election next March. She will stand for the

seat of Wollondilly which covers all of the Wollondilly Shire and areas of Campbelltown.

Councillor Hannan says she was forced to make the decision after being stood over as President of MACROC – the association of three LGA’s – Wollondilly, Campbelltown and Camden. In 2010 she held the position of Vice President and the general inference was that she would move into the President’s position.

She says this time good sense and fairness have not prevailed and the main criteria for voting-in the new MACROC President appeared to be on political lines.

Cr Hannan said that the people of Wollondilly and Campbelltown deserve better than politicians that are good at “the numbers”. Most of us are sick to the stomach of the back room deals of the major parties – many times for their personal benefit - and not for the people they serve. More and more independents are leading the way - they want to serve the people who voted for them are not the party who tells them what to do.

The family of Kiwi would like to thank their friends for their support during Kiwi’s recent illness and passing. Kiwi was a larger than life character who always had a story to tell and a cold beer in the fridge. Kiwi moved to Australia from New Zealand in 1960 and worked on the Dam as a Ranger until the late 1990’s. Kiwi loved the bush and was proud of his time and work he had undertaken as part of the Water Board. Kiwi is missed amongst his family and all the friends he gathered along the way.

While he may be gone, a little part of Kiwi exists in all that have known him.

Warragamba will not be the same without him. At Kiwi’s wake a collection was taken to help the Cancer Council with its vital research and $283.80 was raised and donated in Kiwi’s name. Thanks to all those who donated. The Warragamba Workers Club Dam Riders also donated $100 to Cancer Council in Kiwi’s Memory.

The best wife, grandmother, mother, sister and daughter to all of us.

You were dealt a crap card towards the end but you took it on the chin and you were a fighter right up until your last breath. You made life fun. You knew you were dying and you never complained.

We love you and we will miss you everyday for the rest of our lives.

You left us with such a positive outlook on life and we thank you for that.

We are all better people for having you in our world. You will be sadly missed.

Warragamba Pool held its annual Open day on Sunday 5 December with a great turn out, particularly for those West Tigers fans!
