Radio Plays Radio Plays are written and performed for you, the listener, to create the pictures in your mind. That is why we call these productions “Theatre of the Mind” Radio Plays are depending on the voices and sound effects and of course the story, to conjure up the images in your imagination. It is called “Visual Imagery”! There are no costumes, or sets, or props, or make-up; just the right voice for that character, and sound. That is why Radio Players have such a demanding role, they must create their character with voice and sound effects, and that’s all!! Come and listen to two very clever plays, first is “Back for Christmas” a black comedy from the Suspense series 1940’s era, second, “The Plot to Overthrow Christmas” written by Norman Corwin and performed about four times, first on Dec 25 1938. Long before Dr Seuss!! Our Theatre of the Mind will be held at Leura House 7 Britain St Leura

Renommee
The right outfit opens doors and makes people take notice. Beautiful clothing is an asset, and clothing that makes you feel special can brighten your mood and lift your spirits. So whether you want heads to turn, or a dress for a celebration, or even if you simply enjoy beautiful fabrics and textiles, Renommee in Leura, is the place to visit. Renommee is unique in the Upper Blue Mountains because it caters to both buyers and sellers. The shop works on a consignment basis. Items have to be in immaculate condition and are given shop space for a month. Once the item is sold, the seller receives half the ticketed price, less GST, and the shop receives the other. Both buyer and seller will be able to see the advantage to this arrangement the minute they enter the shop. The shop interior is stunning. Beaded dresses, vintage prints, tulles, satins, November 2009
crepes and embroidery are arranged to their best advantage in a décor that includes an Arabian nights tented dressing room, and large gilt framed mirrors. On one wall there is a display of Japanese obi, heavily embroidered and appliquéd, and underneath there is a rack of silk kimono, ranging from the most formal furisode with swinging sleeves, to delicately painted haori jackets. Under a low gold lamp, a marabou necklet is twined around a pale coloured chiffon scarf. The range of available items includes shoes, bags and jewellery. Whatever your style – designer, contemporary, vintage – you can guarantee there will be something here for you. The stock in the shop is constantly changing – and high end items like Chanel and Lacroix are snapped up quickly by clever fashionistas who know that the secret of being in the right place at the right time is to be there often.
Toastmasters Blue Mountains Toastmasters meet in the Carrington Hotel Ballroom at 7.15pm. The next meeting is Monday 23rd November. Visitors are welcome. For more details please contact Evelyn Calaunan 4757 4094. 4
1st Blackheath Scouts 80th Anniversary About forty people braved the wild and windy conditions on 27th September to mark the 80th Anniversary of the founding of 1st Blackheath Scout Group. Blackheath Scouts were first registered in 1929, however historical records show that the Scout troop was active as early as 1918 - just ten years after Scouting started in the UK! In 1926 the Council gave the 1st Black-
heath Scouts a small building in the corner of the Memorial Park. The current Scout hall behind the Blackheath Oval was the venue for the 80th Anniversary Celebrations. Current Cubs and Scouts and their families were in attendance as well as past Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, Rovers, Leaders and representatives from other Scout Groups in the Blue Mountains District, including the District and the Regional Commissioners. Also in attendance were representatives from local community organisations that have supported the Blackheath Scouts over the years. The adverse weather conditions confined the celebrations to within the
scout hall. The Cubs and Scouts conducted their opening ceremony and flag salute before displaying for the group some exciting scouting activities. The occasion was then formally marked by the cutting of the cake by two long serving member and the youngest Cub present. Group Manager Russell Brown reported that the 1st Blackheath Scout Group is currently enjoying strong membership and should be active well into the future. The Scout movement attracts young people keen on fun, adventure and challenge with a focus on skills, leadership and team work. For further information contact Russell 4788 1113. The people in the photo from the left are Coen Moore, Cub in 1st Blackheath Cub Scout Pack; Carol Crowther, ex-long serving Lady Cub Leader (known locally as the “old Akela’); and Dave Clutterham, ex long-serving Scout Leader (known locally as ‘Skip’). Their combined lengths of service come to more than 80 years!

‘LETS’ relaunch Creating community wealth and building community, recycling and reusing items and the opportunities to make good use of all your skills are as valid as ever and with this in mind, a new Blue Mountains Community Exchange Scheme is up and ready to go. A community exchange scheme is simply an agreement within a community to use and accept a local currency as a mean of payment. It is more flexible than barter as it makes it possible to trade more items with more people. For example, this means that you can ‘trade’ your excess carrots, or your computer skills for a haircut, or a secondhand swing set. The possibilities are endless! To join, simply register with the exchange for free at www.bmces.org. au or contact Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre on 47 821417.
The programme was run in conjunction with Wentworth Falls TAFE, and was jam packed with music and dance, performance art, puppets, as well as educational talks, fora and educational displays. It also included the ’48 Hour Film Project’, the biggest timed film competition in the world. There were plenty of stalls where local businesses and community groups offered information, as well as environmentally sound products. Many of these businesses have challenged the limitations placed on them by existing bureaucracy and changed our mountains environment for the better. SCRAP is a small business that started recycling paper 25 years ago, and are now involved in putting water tanks into local schools, See www.scrapltd. com.au. The hemp oil cosmetics manufacturer, Marijuana Moisture, run by a former local, is supporting Australia’s hemp growers.

Talking Birds Transit of Venus track After the rain, wind and dust we have had lately, a calm afternoon saw a welcome chance for a walk along the Transit of Venus Track at Woodford. A few drops of rain fell at the start of the walk but it didn’t worry the birds so why should it worry me! The dry open woodland was fairly quiet but a Grey Shrike-thrush was busy foraging in the branches of a Scribbly Gum and I could hear a Wonga Pigeon calling from the valley. It wasn’t long before I was joined by a Grey Fantail chattering in the bushes and flying across the track in front of me. As I started down the hill I saw a flock of Striated Thornbills high in a Stringybark while a White-throated Treecreeper worked its way up the trunk searching for insects. Flowering mistletoe had attracted Eastern Spinebills and New Hol-
www.theecho.net.au
land Honeyeaters and I heard, but did not see, a Mistletoebird. In the valley Golden Whistlers were calling, a Yellow Robin peered at me from the trunk of a tree and Red-browed Finches foraged in the grass. Lewin’s Honeyeater and Brown Gerygone were seen in a Black Wattle. Near Mabel Falls I saw a Yellow-throated Scrubwren and wondered if they had nested there again this year. Long before I reached the swamp I could hear the frog chorus and it was nice to see the bush lush and green again. The bottlebrushes were in bud and will be a mass of red with lots of honeyeaters in a week or two. Variegated Fairy-wrens flitted about on the edge of the swamp, the male a little jewel in his bright summer plumage. Tree Martins have returned from their winter holiday up north and were flying in and out of the hollows in a Scribbly Gum, where they nest each year. While I was watching them I heard an Eastern Whipbird and a Pilotbird call from the thick Banksia scrub. They are often heard but not so easy to see. As I walked back up the ridge the Rufous Whistlers were calling and a Black-faced Cuckoo-shrike perched on a branch in front of me. This is a walk Blue Mountains Bird Observers often do. If you would like to join us on a walk details can be found on our website: www.bmbirding.com.au/bmbo
Don’t Dis My Ability International Day of People with a Disability is celebrated on 3rd December each year with the theme: Don’t

dis my Ability and is “a day of celebration, inclusion and participation”. Disability Enterprises Leura (DE) will be part of the celebrations when they present their 5th Annual Art Exhibition: Sensorial ’09 – colour & collaboration, in an ongoing partnership with Katoomba Fine Art Gallery. “Every work is produced by artists with complex disabilities needing many attempts to finalise works that display with pride and promote dignity,” said DE’s Debra Brown. It is a process which involves the artist in an exploration of his/her senses as they use touch, sight, smell and at times hearing and possibly taste, to create stunning and inspiring art works. Visiting this exhibition is a fantastic opportunity for families, friends, tourists and the community to learn more about differing abilities and the contribution that every person can make. “Art created by people with a disability makes a unique contribution to the rich and diverse cultural life of Australia – with vast potential to bring about social change through its positive impact on the health and wellbeing of individuals, communities and our nation,” said Jennifer Bott, Past CEO, Australia Council. SENSORIAL ’09 runs from 2nd – 8th December from 10am – 5pm each day at Katoomba Fine Art Gallery & Restaurant, 98 Lurline St, Katoomba. It opens at 11am on the 2nd December with wine and cheese from 2 – 4pm on the 5th December. It is free and everyone is welcome. The Chamber has a busy agenda for the next twelve months, with a major priority being a reinvigoration, and a review of the Chamber’s current Constitution to include a much broader representation of the Wentworth Falls community. Warren said, “As a priority, the Chamber will need to achieve greater communications between the Chamber and the broader Wentworth Falls community and increase membership.” Warren also applauded the contribution of the outgoing Committee, drawing particular attention to the energy and contribution of the long-serving outgoing President, Mr Barry Shanks. Finding your way in Wentworth Falls Blue Mountains City Council recently launched the pilot Wayfinding project. Mayor, Clr Adam Searle described wayfinding as, “All of the ways in which people orient themselves in a given space, such as a town, a tourist precinct or nature reserve, and how people navigate from place to place.” “Pedestrian wayfinding will allow people who are on foot, or arriving by bus, rail or car, to access a diverse array of local facilities, destinations and attractions more easily. “The wayfinding sign is designed to be robust and durable with a regional map and a town map, showing local facilities and points of interest. Orientation and support are given to new people. The KNC Management Committee is friendly and inclusive and always welcomes new people. Two information sessions are being held before the AGM to give people a chance to find out what we do and what is involved: 10am and 6pm Tuesday 10 November at KNC. Please rsvp for either session. For more information speak to Dianne Jacobus, Manager 4782 1117.
