Blooming Marvellous Award Emu Plains husband and wife rose exhibitors Doug and Glynis Hayne won the Grand Champion Award at the Illawarra Regional Rose Show held in October. Some 15 years ago the local exhibitors planted four bushes of Joyfulness an orange hybrid tea rose and won their first prize with roses from these bushes in the bunch of three class. Using roses from the same bushes at the Illawarra Regional the highly respected rosarians won the ultimate award with a bud to full bloom unit. Of the win Glynis Hayne said, “Since using the Neutrog fertilizer Sudden Impact our rose have been of a very high standard and it is only a matter of having the right roses at the right time to win awards.” During November Doug gave a talk and handed out roses to the residents of the Edenglassie Retirement Village.

Commuter Car Park Commuters now have access to 64 extra parking spaces, with the opening of Stage One of the Emu Plains Commuter Car Park. Minister for Western Sydney David Borger said “The Emu Plains Commuter Car Park is a $1.85 million project to benefit local commuters,” he said. “It’s being built in stages to minimise the impact on commuters during the construction period. When fully completed later this year, the new ground level car park will provide approximately 260 spaces north of the station, adjoining Lee Street.” Mr Borger said the works will include the installation of lighting and CCTV surveillance cameras, associated road works and the provision of new disabled car parking spaces in the existing car park near the station entry. “The new car park will substantially increase commuter car parking at the station, improving facilities for local commuters and making it more convenient to park and catch the train. “I’d like to thank local commuters for their patience while the rest of the car park facilities are constructed.” For more information on the new Emu Plains Commuter Car Park, visit www.tca.nsw.gov.au.

Win Dinner fo r 2 to the val u e of $50

May I have two minutes of your time? The Emu Sports Club is reviewing everything we do make sure we’re keeping up with those changes so that we meet the needs of the people who use the club. Emu Sports Club has a long and proud tradition as a centre for social activity and as a golf club. Well now we want to make the club even better with your help. The Survey As a member of our local community, but currently not a member of our Club, we’d appreciate two minutes of your time to answer the enclosed questionnaire. We want to know what you know about the club, its attractions and its activities. This is your opportunity to tell us what you look for in a local club. The survey is an important step in gathering the information we need to build a better club. 2 Dinners For Two As an appreciation for completing the survey and returning it, either post to PO Box 251, Penrith 2751, or dropping it off at the club, we’d like to offer you something special. Everyone who is not currently a member of Emu Sports Club and returns the survey will go into the draw for two dinners for two at the Emu Sports Bistro, with the reservations valued up to $50 each. Emu Sports Club is serious about developing and meeting the needs of the local community and the people who use the club. But we need your help. Please return this no later than 31st December 2010. Thanks for your time and we appreciate your assistance.

Proposed Emu Plains Train Stabling Yard In January 2010, the NSW Government announced the start of detailed environmental studies as part of a proposed $182 million project to construct a new train stabling facility near Emu Plains Station. RailCorp has been seeking written submissions on the Review of Environmental Factors for the proposed Emu Plains Stabling Yard Project from Wednesday 10 November to Saturday 4 December 2010. The new stabling yard, if constructed, would: • replace the current Penrith stabling yard, which is at capacity • improve service frequencies for Emu Plains customers • allow additional peak services on the Western Line • support the move to an all eight-car train fleet • support the new generation Waratah trains, providing capacity for future service growth • include a new platform at Emu Plains Station and modernised signalling between Emu Plains and Penrith to enhance train safety and reliability. The site being considered for the proposed stabling yard is a 1,200-metre strip of land on the northern side of the railway line to the west of Emu Plains Station. Most of this land is within the existing railway corridor. Up to 22 eight-car trains could be stabled at the proposed Emu Plains site. Trains would depart from the facility in the lead-up to the morning and evening peaks, and return at the conclusion of timetabled services. The stabling yard would operate 24 hours a day 7 days a week and would

consist of: •rail infrastructure (tracks, overhead wiring and support structures) •train operations •amenities for train crews •security structures (fences, gates, and CCTV) •communications and emergency equipment •staff car parking. Environmental studies have been undertaken on noise and vibration, hydrology, lighting and visual impact, indigenous and non-indigenous heritage, geotechnical, hazardous materials assessment (land contamination), flora and fauna, traffic and transport, ecologically-sustainable development, socio-economic impact More details are available at www.railcorp.info/ community/emuplains

Looking for a Quick Course in Public Speaking? Glenbrook toastmasters will be conducting one of their successful speechcraft courses commencing in February 2011. Speechcraft programs are short introductory courses in public speaking that are offered by Toastmasters for people who are not ready or who are unable to make a full commitment to join a club. They are practical, handson courses designed for novice speakers. Whether you need to propose a toast at a wedding, get better results from interviews or are looking to improve your managerial potential, Speechcraft will give you the skills and confidence you need to express yourself in front of a meeting or audience. Learning to effectively formulate and express your ideas opens a new world of possibilities. You will be more persuasive and confident when giving presentations, and will improve your one-on-one dealings with others. Learn Impromptu Speaking For many participants, this is a major benefit – developing the skill to think on your feet, and learning how not to be tongue-tied when you’re suddenly asked a question that you just weren’t prepared for. Specific techniques are taught and practised repeatedly during the course. Develop Greater Self Confidence Learning to speak in public is about overcoming a fear which almost everybody shares. You will find that as you develop confidence in public speaking, you’ll have greater confidence in all other areas of your personal and professional life. Glenbrook toastmasters meet on the second and fourth Wednesday evening of each month at 7:15 for a 7:30 start in the Glenbrook Guides Hall, corner of Moore Street and Hare Street Glenbrook. The next meeting is Wednesday December 8 and then Wednesday January 12. Whether you are a professional, factory worker, student, stay at home or retiree, Toastmasters is the most efficient, enjoyable and affordable way of getting great communication and leadership skills. Contact Peter Nash 0408 692 770 or glenbrook.toastmasters@ gmail.com. You don’t need to make an appointment, just drop in and see how we operate.
