Blackheath Neighbourhood Centre The Winter months can be quiet in the centre as people hibernate through the cold or leave town for warmer climates. An important service that BANC provides to the community is emergency relief for food. We have a food pantry that can be accessed by those in need of provisions particularly over the colder months. We are reliant entirely on donations to maintain our pantry and it is at this time of the year when demand is high that we are most in need. Any non perishable or freezable goods are most welcome at our centre. This is also tax time and at BANC we offer free Tax Help to those people earning less than 40K P/A and who have simple tax requirements. If this sounds like you do go ahead and call our centre to make an appointment. We always enjoy meeting new people and sharing stories with our regular local drop ins. Come and visit us to find out more about our programs or for a free cuppa and a chat. Blackheath Area Neighbourhood Centre Gardiner Crescent Blackheath, P: 4787 7770, E: community@banc.org.au

News From The Nursery We are a not-for-profit organisation. All the money from our plant sales goes back into running the nursery. We help maintain and re-establish the endemic plant biodiversity of the Blue Mountains. Winter sees a slowing down of activity in the nursery and the volunteers, led by our nursery coordinator, Tanya, are busy looking for inside jobs! Some rescues are also taking place before the bulldozers get to them. Education is part of our brief and we have worked with school and TAFE groups to this end and participate in supplying plants for Tree Day. Our recent fund raising efforts have included a Sausage Sizzle at Bunnings in Penrith to raise money for a new fridge for our seed bank, and “Winter Magic”. We had a very successful time and though it was cold it was a lovely sunny day. Katoomba is not the ideal place to

million volunteers have planted over 15 million native trees and shrubs across Australia!

Customers are still welcome at Oak Street from Tuesday to Friday 10am to 4pm but we are not open on Saturdays during winter.

If you like the outdoors Bushcare is for you. Young and old, fit or frail there is a weeding job for you that will help your local area to recover to its former beauty.

Tree Planting Day

No experience needed as everyone is welcome to come along and plant one or many plants.

Tree Planting Day at Blackheath with Frog Hollow Bushcare Group is on 14th August. Come and join us to return some native plants to the swampy area at the base of Minyago Street Blackheath. The planting will begin at 10am and we will have some morning tea at 11:30am. Tree planting is a good start to get down and get your hands dirty to help the planet! This year some Bush care groups on their regular workday will be contributing to the 16th annual National Tree Day events. To date more than 2

1 in 5 Creative Arts Association First Exhibition

1 in 5 Creative Arts Association is having its first exhibition for the Upper Mountains/Lithgow branch in September. Date to be advised.

Our group is made up of people living with mental health issues and their supporters and at this stage we offer an annual membership to those interested in creativity in all its forms. We have writers, poets, musicians, painters, sculptors, photographers and web designers so far. Membership forms are available from Blackheath Neighbourhood Centre and at an annual cost of $10 will give members the chance to participate in workshops, exhibit, perform and to be on the organising committee if they wish. The statistic, one in five, represents those who at some stage will be affected by mental health concerns, a common yet often ignored illness. 1in5 has a credo of “creativity, understanding, expression, your cue to living.”

Please contact Megan on 0401 701063 for more information.

Fifth Avenue Chiropractic Ivo: I hail from Hamburg, Germany and graduated from the German Sport University in Cologne with a Masters in Sport Science and Exercise Physiology. In 2005 I moved to Australia to obtain my Masters degree in Chiropractic from Macquarie University and have been practicing as a Chiropractor in country Victoria and Sydney for last 2 years. Being part of the chiropractic profession affords me the opportunity to do what I feel passionate about, which is helping people to gain a higher quality of life. I am really excited about establishing my Chiropractic clinic in Katoomba and serving the people of the Blue Mountains. I see the body as an amazing piece of art and all too often we just do not listen all that closely and recognise where it may be out of balance. I enjoy helping my patients to gain a better understanding of how to listen to their body. My natural approach to

www.theecho.net.au

Chiropractic care is not merely to focus on the physical causes of disease and illness, but also to address the nutritional, emotional and toxic stresses that affect the body on a daily basis. I love the outdoors and know from personal experience how debilitating it can be when the body is not functioning and how this can restrict your daily activities. Chiropractic helped me to get back on track and I wish to do the same for my patients.

The group will work with local facilitators to provide classes and workshops specially designed for the interests and abilities of its members and endeavours to create a social circle that enhances the homeschool experience for everyone.
