A Big Day Out. Katoomba residents will be aware of the many thousands of people who attend the Katoomba Christian Convention site over the course of the year. One group of young people have over the last few years, wanted to make a contribution back to the community that hosts them. Camp MMM, in collaboration with St Hilda’s Anglican church and Anglicare will be running their ‘Big Day Out’ on Wednesday 7th July. Several hundred young people will be involved in visiting nursing homes, doing a backyard blitz in the local school, collecting cans in a food drive and getting involved in other community service activities. The range of activities is quite diverse; Ian Robinson, the director of the Camp said ‘We are excited about the activities planned for this year, especially some concreting we’re going to be doing.”

Local personality Carmel Blackburn has been part of the Mountains Community for 25 years. She has recently retired from her position as Manager of Food Services and is now concentrating on her role as owner of two of the Blue Mountains’ historic pubs, The Family Hotel in Katoomba, and the Alexandria, in Leura. Carmel and her family have owned the Family Hotel for the last five years, and have transformed it into a friendly and accessable venue for lots of community-friendly activities like politics and poetry in the pub, and a family friendly dining room. The Alexandria was acquired last year, and Carmel is excited about its future. “Getting the Alex is a privilege,” she says. Carmel’s daughter Jane is the licencee and cook at the Family Hotel, and daughter Michelle is the licencee at the Alex. Her two sons, Peter and

Mark, are also involved in the day to day business of running the Hotels. The Blackburn family moved to Katoomba from Central Victoria in 1987, when they bought a hotel in the town centre. At the time, Carmel was also studying for a degree in Social Welfare at the University of Melbourne. She took up a placement for her degree at Blue Mountains City Council, in Aged Services. During that time she was involved with numerous community development programs and in 1997 she took a three month temporary position as the Manager for Food Services. At the end of the three months, she applied for the job and got it. “We went through about 4 amalgamations during the next few years!” Under Carmel’s management, Food Services developed from four branches of ‘Meals on Wheels’ to a much wider reaching set of Community programmes. These include the five “Village” restaurants held in

community halls/civic centres from Blaxland to Blackheath, which provide pensioners with cut price lunches and an opportunity to socialize, and programmes for working with people with mental illness, teaching life skills like shopping for and preparing food. “It’s never about one person,” says Carmel, of her time with food services. “It’s always a team effort. I’ve really enjoyed being part of the Community services team in the Mountains. It’s a great team!

New Climate Website Katoomba Area Climate Action Now has launched its new website: www.katoombacan.org It contains a wealth of information about climate change and proposed solutions, as well as ideas for how residents of the Blue Mountains can reduce their carbon footprint and get involved in creating a more sustainable local community. The site includes something for everyone - even the climate sceptics! Enquiries: Sue 0418 292 672 or email info@katoombacan.org.

PIZZA PIZZA

Local Restaurant

PIZZA PIZZA in Wentworth Falls is offering free home delivery for another few weeks but the most important bit is the melt-in-your-mouth crispy pizza base. Owner Eddie has developed a unique method of preparing the dough that takes 5 hours and then adds a great range of toppings using fresh ingredients. Eddie also prepares a variety of pasta dishes with at least 10 different sauces and will soon be offering US style BBQ baby pork ribs! PIZZA PIZZA is on the Highway so has easy parking and is open late. You can dine in and there is a nice choice of drinks and gelato so call in and taste the difference.

Feral Ducks & Geese Relocated The majority of ducks at Wentworth Falls Lake are native to the area and will not be removed. These include Pacific Black Ducks, Wood Ducks, Eurasian Coots and Cormorants, amongst others. Mayor, Clr Adam Searle, said, “Feral ducks and geese are problematic because they compete and interbreed with native waterbirds, they cause water pollution from faeces and they can spread disease. Their aggressive behaviour can be threatening to the public and Council has received many requests from residents to have them removed.” “The relocated feral ducks and geese will be well looked after at their new home in a poultry sanctuary near Canberra. The sanctuary has been set up specifically to care for abandoned poultry”, said Mayor Searle. Council’s Environment Management staff will continue to work with Animal Liberation volunteers to capture and relocate the ducks over the coming weeks. Penalties of up to $5,500 and/or six months imprisonment can apply for dumping unwanted animals, including ducks and geese, under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979. If you have unwanted pets, please contact the RSPCA or an Animal Liberation volunteer, rather than abandoning these animals into natural areas.

OVER 55 & WORKING? INCREASE YOUR SUPER BALANCE FOR RETIREMENT To significantly increase your final superannuation total for retirement, there are several risk free strategies for workers who are over 55 years of age. These strategies are government approved and are tax effective. A person aged 55 # with a current superannuation balance of $60 000 will retire with approximately $152 500. Implementing one of these strategies the same person could have a balance of $188 500 for retirement. That’s quite a significant increase that is worth investigating. Would you like a greater retirement income from your superannuation fund? The higher your current income and the greater your current super balance, the better these strategies work in increasing your final balance. The benefits of these strategies are even greater for people aged over 6o. If you are thinking about your superannuation and how it will get you through retirement, call me –Adam - on 0431 517 455. Art Music & Fashion “Art should not stand alone. It is about where you live. It’s about your community. It’s about what you see around you” Local Artist Rachel Szalay is having an exhibition of her work at vintage clothes boutique Very Fashion on Waratah St on July 4th. This is a first for Katoomba, where art, music and the business of looking good all combine shopping with a feast for the senses. This is an exhibition created to showcase Rachel’s work and for her to respond to the “funky vibe of the shop.” “The colours at Very Fashion inspired me to think outside the square and my works for this latest exhibition are very much influenced by the combinations of colour”, says Rachel. It includes a fantastic portrait of shopowner Helen Mountford, that incorporates the Winter Magic theme of ‘light’. You may have missed it this time due to the early day in the month so maybe it will happen again. July 2010

Osborne Ladies College Local people may not be aware of the unique ladies college which was established by Miss Violet Gibbins at Blackheath in 1923 and which remained open until 1958. Miss Gibbins was the principal for all that time. The college occupied a site west of the highway with commanding views of Megalong and Kanimbla Valleys. Osborne Ladies College was run on naval lines with a code of strict dis-

cipline. It was named after the Royal Navy training college, Osborne Naval College, on the Isle of Wight. The girls’ formal uniforms were based on Royal Navy uniforms, complete with brass buttons. Living rooms, classrooms and bedrooms at the college were named after Royal and Australian Royal Navy ships. An interesting collection of memorabilia of the college is exhibited at the Mount Victoria and District Historical Society’s museum at the railway station at Mount Victoria. This collec-
