McCarthy Catholic College Trade training Centre
Nepean High School Students Reach For The Stars
The original Emu Plains caravan park opened 25 years ago and has been upgraded with new facilities.
The official ground breaking ceremony for the $6million trade training centre recently took place at the college with Federal Member for Lindsay, David Bradbury and Bishop Kevin Manning. The new facility will train students from McCarthy, Caroline Chisholm at Glenmore Park, Xavier College at Llandilo and St Columba’s High at Springwood, which are all partner schools to the project. It will allow local young people to start their trades training while they are at school.
Nepean High has been selected to become a specialist creative and performing arts high schools. Nepean will join Northmead, Newtown, Wollongong, Hunter, Campbelltown, Ku-ringgai and Conservatorium High School as specialist arts high schools. “It’s very exciting news for us,” said Principal Tony Baldacchino. “It presents terrific opportunities for the school.”
The fundraiser FUN DAY will be held on Sunday 1st November from 10am-3pm at Leonay Public School.

Learning From The Past
The Cocky’s Joy was flowing, the bush dancing was swinging and the smell of damper was in the air last week when Emu Heights Year 3 and 4 concluded a study of early Australian settlement with a Colonial Day. The children and teachers dressed in Colonial wear participated in a range of typical children’s experience from the 1800s from playground games to cooking . A highlight of the day was a visit to the Australian Arms Inn Museum where children experienced the practical ways of life, 150 years ago. No Foxtel, no iPod,…. what about a game of horseshoes? The Arms of Australia Inn is located at the Cnr Gardenia Ave & Great Western Highway. For more information, call 4735 4394 or visit www.nepeanhistoricalsociety.org.au.

2009 Schools Industry Partnership Awards Two outstanding Nepean High students have been honoured in this year’s awards; Jedda Khan in Hospitality and Mitchell Jeffries in Construction. Both students have been exceptionally hardworking and dedicated with the vocational training and well deserving of the awards.
Vegies at Emu Plains A great deal of enthusiasm and hard work was done by the Emu Plains Public School Environment Committee and Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Lower Blue Mountains to prepare a four bed fenced garden area. Funded by the Lower Blues, this project ticks all the boxes, creating a great community spirit and excellent learning forum, with an edible result! Lower Blue President Frank Behl was pleased with the efforts of his contemporaries who wielded rotary diggers, shovels and rakes, and over the moon with the efforts and enthusiasm from the school. “The children have been looking forward to this, and have been reading up on the best methods of growing
organic vegetables, based on the principles of grouping plants that protect each other from insect invasion,” said Madeleine Chan the Environment Committee Chair. The vegetable plants, chosen by the school and bought by the Rotarians, were planted on Monday by the children. The school is to run this project and from the enthusiasm shown they will be very successful. Rotarians from Lower Blue will help out if required, especially with watering during school holidays. “A job well done,” said Frank. “We will look forward to helping another local school set up something similar in the future.”

Nepean High School “The NSW Government will invest in these schools to provide creative opportunities for students who want to train and pursue a career in the arts. These schools were an obvious choice given their strong history in delivering a successful performing arts curriculum,” said Premier Nathan Rees. “They will offer creative and performing arts programs, catering for students in the Parramatta and Penrith regions in areas such as dance, drama and music.” “Nepean High School also has a long history of teaching performing arts and associated extracurricular activities that involve nearby primary schools,” said Education and Training Minister Verity Firth. The news has been welcomed by Sydney’s leading performing arts companies as an extension of their existing performance and skills programs in Western Sydney. “It’s excellent to know that the NSW Government will provide this tangible focus in Western Sydney,” said Sydney Theatre Company’s General Manager, Rob Brookman. John Kirkman, the CEO of the Penrith-based Dame Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, the Penrith Con-
servatorium of Music, Q Theatre Company and Penrith Regional Gallery and Lewers Bequest described the initiative as most welcome. “It underlies the importance of secondary school education in the nurturing and development of forthcoming generations of Australian performers – particularly those from Penrith and Western Sydney,” Mr Kirkman said.

Funds raised on the day will be used to purchase more resources for the school such as interactive Whiteboards for the classrooms and to improve technology generally to keep up with what is required for students today. For information on the fundraiser, see the advertisement below or contact Leonay Public School directly.

Fresh Farm Vegies
The key to healthy eating is healthy produce. Now you can buy farm fresh local produce at a market near you. Having just moved to Mulgoa, Hapi and Cath from Field to Feast, are excited to introduce their local neighbours to good quality fruit and vegetables at affordable prices. We currently sell our produce at the Penrith Paceway Market on a Wednesday, and now also at the Organic Food Market in Penrith High Street on Sundays. Our farm is situated in Catherine Field, where we grow a vast array of vegetables and some fruits. We also supplement our range with Chinese vegetables, strawberries and free range eggs from other local farmers. Come along and say hi next time you are at the markets and taste some of our homemade pickles, chilli pastes and sauces.
PRESENT THIS AD WHEN YOU SPEND OVER $20 AND WE’LL GIVE YOU 6 FREE RANGE EGGS!* *Only while stocks last each market day.
Have you ever wished to buy fruit and vegetables direct from the farm? Now you do not need to pack up your car for a day trip – Hapi and Cath from Field to Feast either grow whatever you would like locally, or source local farm fresh for you. If you are after something more exotic, then we can, by special request, buy in from our contacts in the industry for you. We label our own grown produce ‘chemical free’ as we believe that the taste is better without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers. Luckily we are situated next to a turkey farm which keeps us in manure throughout the year, and then Leppington Organics are also able to supply much needed fertilisers to help us care for our plants and soil. Unlike other commercial farmers we are able to keep our overheads low, so that we can provide quality produce at a price you can afford. By purchasing your fruit and vegetables through us you are also providing income to many struggling farmers in our local area. Our produce goes from ‘Field to Feast’. Not only do we bring fresh to the markets we also pickle and preserve our produce as the seasons rotate. Currently we have a large range of chilli pastes and sauces, along with many unusual pickles, dips and pestos made from recipes gleaned from around the world. We love tempting people with taste testers – one bite generally and you’re hooked. Unusual varieties get us excited too – wait until summer when we have some of our heirloom tomatoes for you to try! Spring planting has started so

our range will expand over the next few months including the much requested zucchini blossoms. Currently we are selling Chinese greens, rainbow chard, fresh cut rocket and mizuna for loose leaf salad, romanesco, broccoli, chicory, endive, Chinese and italian lettuce, three types of cabbage, 60 varieties of chilli, purple potatoes, royal blue potatoes, broad beans, jerusalem artichokes, shallots, radish, herbs, nuts, eggs, and much much more! If it is unusual then there is a chance we are growing it!
Blue Dragon Second hand books are an inexpensive way to try new authors and explore other types of books you might not normally read, given the cost of new books. You can explore different times in history not to mention life on imaginary planets! Also with a second hand book it’s nice to know you can pass on your books for someone else to enjoy – a great way to recycle. We have a wide selection of second hand books and a small selection of new children’s picture books. We specialize in children’s and young adult books as we have young children ourselves and know how important it is to catch their imagination and get them hooked on reading early. We also have a great range of scifi/fantasy, crime and general fiction. Our range of non-fiction is growing daily and there is always something different coming in. We are located in the arcade opposite the main car park in Glenbrook. Come in and say Hi!
