ment of the site, which has now been completed. Mayor, Cr Adam Searle, stated, “The assessment has concluded that the road is not safe to reopen due to the likely occurrence of further rock falls and the major risk this poses to users of the road. Therefore Mitchells Pass Rd will need to remain closed for an indefinite period.” Mayor Searle advised that Council plans to undertake further detailed investigation of the stabilisation works required to safely reopen the road and the costs associated with these works, anticipating that the costs will be significant. “At the conclusion of these investigations, which is likely to take 4-6 months, further advice and information will be provided for the Council’s consideration”, he said. “Until this time, the section of Mitchells Pass Rd between Lennox Bridge and Emu Plains will remain closed to all public access (as per Section 115(2) of the Roads Act 1993) until otherwise advised.” Mitchell’s Pass remains open from Glenbrook Road to local traffic only. New Vet at Orchard Hills I would like to introduce myself as the new vet at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. When Janet Colless retired in January, I purchased the business and I am thrilled at the opportunity to care for your furry family members.

Camille Brandt with Bella

I grew up in the Blue Mountains and after graduating from Sydney University with first class honors I worked in the Campbelltown region, the Blue Mountains, and Liverpool in general practice. For the last year and a half I

have been working as an emergency veterinarian at the Veterinary Specialist Centre, which was exciting and challenging. I recently completed a 4 year Master of Veterinary Science in Small Animals and I have a strong interest in surgery and internal medicine. My pets include Bella the kelpie, 3 cats (Tigger, Blossom and Baby) and 2 pet sheep (Mister Handsome and Lucy). The sheep actually think they are dogs and love a back rub. My aim as a veterinarian is to provide an accurate diagnoses allowing the correct treatment to be provided. Prevention is better than the cure. I am fortunate to have retained the same friendly staff including Teresa, Justine and Trent. Liz has also returned after a break and Belinda is our newest nurse employee. Teresa, Justine, Liz and Belinda are all fully qualified nurses with years of experience, and are more than capable in helping you and your pet. My future plans include; scheduled appointment times for less waiting time for you and your pets; extended appointment times; computerisation to enable efficient record keeping with reminder letters to be sent to you; new laboratory equipment which allows in house diagnosis of a disease, provid-

ing results within 30 minutes; Orthopedic surgery; Specialist ultrasonographer who visits weekly to perform ultrasounds on your pets. I look forward to meeting you and your pets - just over the roundabout at The Northern Road/ Glenmore Parkway junction. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.

Exhibition of early sporting memorabilia This year marks the 200th anniversary of the beginning of Lachlan Macquarie’s term as the fifth governor of the colony of New South Wales. The National Trust Heritage Festival 2010 will be holding a variety of community-hosted events across metropolitan and regional NSW. To mark the anniversary, the Arms of Australia Inn Museum will be holding a display of early sporting photographs, which will include cricket, rowing, harness racing and basketball, as well as other items of sporting interest from the Nepean area. The exhibition will run from the 12 to 22 of April and a 1800s style cricket match is being organised for the weekend of the 17 and 18 April.

Seniors Fire Safety Seniors (those aged 65 years and older) are more likely to be injured or killed in a house fire than any other group. Therefore the NSWFB sees it as vital to try to help seniors to reduce the potential for tragic situations in the future. The majority of residential fires begin in the kitchen and are often the result of cooking being left unattended on the stove. Other common causes of fire include electrical appliance failure, overloading powerpoints, and appliances not being switched off at the power point. NSWFB Commissioner Greg Mullins said there were simple steps that seniors, and everyone else, could take to improve safety measures in the home. * Install and maintain photoelectric smoke alarms, which can be hardwired and interconnected so that when one sounds they all sound. * If you’re unable to maintain your smoke alarms due to infirmity, then contact your local fire station. Firefighters assist the elderly to check that smoke alarms are working and change batteries. The SABRE (Smoke Alarm Battery Replacement for the

www.emuleonaygazette.com.au

Elderly) program is designed to support the elderly, residing in their own homes and without family, relatives or friends who are able to assist, to live independently and remain valuable assets in the community. * Develop and practice a home escape plan regularly and if you live alone, involve your neighbours. * Install deadlocks that can be opened from the inside without keys. Where the door needs a key to operate, leave keys in locks or nearby so that you can find them easily in an emergency. * If you have difficulty hearing, then consider installing special smoke alarms which have a flashing strobe light and vibrating pad that can be placed under the pillow while you sleep and will activate when the smoke alarm sounds. * In an emergency, dial Triple Zero (000). Never assume that someone else has done so.

Country Cottage Pre School At a Country Cottage Pre School in Leonay the staff emphasis is on providing a caring, professional and long lasting relationship with families. At the pre school they provide care for children aged from 2 years to school age with programming which is tailored to the individual child’s learning requirements. The activities are then structured so as to create a fun learning environment, where the children learn while enjoying the activities. The Early Childhood teachers prepare the programs and activities and parents are encouraged to contribute. The professional staff then ensure that families are kept up to date with all progress. In the last year at the preschool a school readiness program, prepared after consultation with the local schools, ensures that each child is as ready as they can be for the transition to primary school. This Centre consistently achieves High Quality Accreditation results and is a popular Early Learning Centre for young children in the area. There are a few spaces available and a waiting list exists for some of the days.

Even after graduation the Centre maintains contact with families through its Before and After School Care services in Leonay and Emu Plains, as well as the popular Vacation Care service run from the Leonay Public School grounds. Both before & after services run active programs for the children including sport, put put golf, movement. The Vacation Care service will run again this April school holidays and includes interesting activities during each day as well as excursions each week to various exciting venues.

Communter Car Park A new commuter car park at Emu Plains station is due for completion by the end of this year. The Minister Assisting the Minister for Transport and Roads David Borger said commuters in Western Sydney are the big winners with the NSW Government Commuter Car Park program. “These new car parks will mean an extra 3500 parking spaces for commuters making it easier to get to work each day,” Mr Borger said. “The Government is determined to make public transport more efficient and convenient which will hopefully

see less people driving to work and ultimately contribute to a more environmentally sound and sustainable future.” “The Government recognises that this area is growing rapidly which is why we are investing millions of dollars into vital infrastructure, making it easier for commuters to get out of their cars and onto the train,” said Mulgoa MP Dianne Beamer. For further information on the Commuter Car Park Program, please visit the Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation (TIDC) website at www.tidc.nsw.gov.au.
