Coming Up Roses At Emu Plains PS Recently a team of over 60 dedicated members of the Emu Plains Public School community shared a sunny autumnal Sunday sprucing up the grounds of their historic school. Under the expert direction of the P & C Committee, this amazing band of parents and children completed the front rose garden, planted natives around the Anniversary paver garden and weeded, pruned and mulched the other gardens at the school making it one of the most attractive in the area. Chocolate factory in Emu Heights Yes there is one although production is still very limited as the chocolate is hand made from the very beginning with the raw materials, roasting and processing cacao beans, then moulding it into a finished product. MP’s resignation Karyn Paluzzano has resigned as the State Member of Parliament for Penrith and has issued the following statement. “I have today [7 May 2010] advised the Premier and the Speaker of my resignation from NSW Parliament, effective immediately. Over the past seven years it has been my absolute honour to represent the great people of Penrith and the lower Blue Mountains. I have endeavoured to be a strong voice for local residents and I’m proud that I have been able to work with the community to help deliver the after hours GP clinic at Nepean Hospital, traffic lights on Mulgoa Road and the trade school at Jamison High School.I will remain a hardworking member of the local community and will support the people of Penrith in any way I can. I will be making no further comment.”

State By-Election June 19th

Everything is Coming Up Roses At Emu Plains PS

Penrith’s Labor candidate for the June 19 by-election is Councillor John Thain. Cr Thain, 49, lives in North St Marys with his family and has been a councillor for 11 years, with a year as mayor from September 2005. Stuart Ayres is the Liberal candidate and lives in Leonay with his partner Senator Marise Payne. Stuart is the marketing manager for Australian College of Physical Education and is now focussing on the local community. He is keen to set up a community group to work with the options for the solution to the Victoria Bridge problem. Suzie Wright from Glenbrook is the candidate for the Greens and she is also concerned with the Victoria Bridge issue as well as climate change and over development in Western Sydney. Noel Selby from Jamisontown is standing as an Independent candidate.

Principal Tony Best is justifiably proud of the school and the strong sense of camaraderie that was exhibited on the day. “Over twenty families were represented at the working bee and we really appreciate and value the family time that people donate. Such occasions demonstrate the strong sense of community we enjoy here at Emu Plains,” he said. “This amazing band of parents and children completed the front rose garden, planted natives around the Anniversary paver garden and weeded, pruned and mulched the other gardens that make Emu Plains Public School one of the most attractive in the area.”

Baby & Kids Market Grab your shopping bags and make room in the car boot! Penrith is hosting the Baby & Kids Market, Australia’s original and biggest market for quality pre-loved baby and kids’ stuff. With over 60 stalls to choose from, there will be a huge variety of goods on offer. You can find furniture, prams, toys, clothes, books and just about anything imaginable for babies and children – without it costing the earth. With stallholders selling their ‘gently used’ wares at very reasonable prices, it’s a fun way to grab some recession-busting bargains while reducing waste and doing your bit for our planet. “You can literally save yourself thousands of dollars at the Baby & Kids Market” says Anne Lewis, the

Market’s founder. “You’ll find fantastic pre-loved brand name items in top condition, and often save around 70% off the retail price. Our stallholders are parents who want to find good homes for things their families no longer use and earn some money at the same time”. Whether you need to furnish the entire nursery for a baby on the way, or are looking to fill your three-year-old’s toy box or stock up on clothes for a fast-growing five-year-old, you’re bound to find exactly what you need. “We all want the best stuff for our kids, but don’t want to waste

‘gently used’ goods like high chairs, prams, bikes, cots, toys, change tables, playpens, clothes and DVDs from other parents makes perfect sense. The Baby & Kids Market has a buzzing atmosphere and is an excellent source of information and friendly advice for new parents. Anne Lewis oversees over 100 Markets a year across Australia, with around 100,000 shoppers expected to flock to them in 2010 so make sure you come along and join in on the fun and bargains! John Bonwick has been building aviaries and rabbit hutches for many years. You may have seen them on display at his premises on Russell Street in Emu Plains. John started out making wire ladders for cave and crevasses in Antartica exploration. Then he added ladders for lighting rigs at rock concerts, fishermen and bird watchers. About 20 years ago he added quilting hoops for patchwork but now aviaries are the major part of production. John builds his aviaries, rabbit hutches, chicken pens and dog runs on a standard modular basis so that they can be easily extended to a variety of shapes and sizes.

Nepean High News Zone Cross Country The Zone Cross Country took place on Tuesday the 27th of April. The carnival took place at Knapsack Park and it was a great place to run at. The trail consisted of many short uphill parts and the trail was very rocky. The trail led up to Elizabeth lookout and turned around and came back to Knapsack Park. The track ran for all ages and went 3, 4 and 6 kilometres. It was a great day and everyone ran well. By Trent Holloway, Year 8

On the 5th and 6th May Nepean High had their annual Athletics carnival where kids ‘make or break it’ in the world of athletics. 1 ½ days of pure endurance and awesome strength, where kids battled it out for top spot. This program is to teach us about healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle. We discussed how you can get children to eat healthier. One idea was to display the healthy food at the front instead of the unhealthy food. We learnt what should be packed in a lunch box that isn’t junk food. I got new ideas on healthier food and the effects that bad food can have on you. By Nathan Job, Year 8. This program encourages a healthy lifestyle because it allows you to live life to the full and prevents things like heart disease and Type Two Diabetes. We later answered some questions and played a couple of games such as the ‘lunch box lotto’ and are looking forward to the next lesson.

Extension Group students are currently working with a high school in Richenback, Switzerland on a pen pal program. Swiss students from this school have been learning English under the guidance of their teacher Ms Tanja Wittwer, and have written letters expressing many common interests (such as a love for fast food and pop music) and a genuine curiosity for one another. Below are some extracts of the replies sent to the Swiss students: ‘We didn’t know who Daddy Yankee was at first, but we researched and found pictures and information on him and now Jess really likes him now. Our favourite singers are Eminem, Lady Gaga and Beyonce.’ Jessica De Silva & Courtney Lane.

Good news about the waste collection The next phase of Penrith Council’s information and education awareness program has now started with randomly selected bins being visually inspected. The new awareness phase is more targeted to residents that may be still struggling with the system and entails checking and notifying residents of any non-organic material contained in their green-lidded bins. Council’s partnership with Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) education teams has proven successful with 21 schools booked in for the KAB education officers to visit the schools and provide education on the benefits of the three bin system. Many schools also have visited the SITA information education centre.
