Greenspace Grant for our River Precinct
An aerial photo of the river precinct
Public facilities and access near the river will continue to be improved thanks to Penrith Council’s success in obtaining $187,500 for its Our River Precinct which forms part of the Our River Masterplan. The Metropolitan Greenspace Program grant by the Department of Planning and Environment will be matched dollar for dollar by Council with the total project valued at $375,000. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM welcomed the funding saying the river is one of the most talked about and visited destinations in the city. “Our river is a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family,” Cr Fowler said. “It boasts playgrounds for the kids, recreation facilities such as boating and fishing as well as covered picnic areas for all to enjoy. “The grant will continue to improve access and facilities around the river.” With pathworks now complete along River Road, Emu Plains, funding will now focus on the delivering facilities on the eastern side of the river including the continuation of upgrades to the Great River Walk. Continued on pg 4.

Little Diva Spa Boutique is a Dream Come True Emu Plains is now proudly home to Little Diva Spa Boutique, a spa boutique that is primarily focused on servicing little girls. During a trip overseas, Liana Brunelli, Manager of Little Diva Spa Boutique, came across a lot of spa boutiques for little girls. She thought it was a great idea and that it was something the Australian market hadn't really focused on. "I've always enjoyed working with children and my ambition was to one day have a job which gave me the opportunity to have fun with the kids" said Liana. The reason why Little Diva Spa Boutique stands out is because there is nothing around to offer the same service as what the adults receive, so this is primarily focused on servicing little girls. Their little divas can expect a day of pampering with mini manicures and pedicures, a delicious chocolate facial, foot spa and a neck massage cushion. All of this with the enjoyment of a pink glass of lemonade, a candy bar, hot food, jewellery making, Wii games and memories to cherish forever. Whilst all of this goes on, Mums can sit down and relax with a nice cuppa. At Little Divas Spa Boutique, its not all about the kids but also about the grown ups. They do spray tanning as well as sell a large range of handbags for the mothers to choose from. Little Divas Spa Boutique is located at Unit 1, 65 Great Western Highway in Emu Plains. They chose this location for the simple reason that there is ample parking located at the rear of the building for the clients convenience. "I've seen the Penrith area grow rapidly over the past 25 years and I'm happy to open the very first of many outlets of Little Divas Spa Boutique around the Sydney area. Little Divas Spa Boutique is a unique business that will no doubt bring a lot of fun memories to parents, children and to
the team that work there. Visit the unique Little Divas Spa Boutique showroom today or find them on www.facebook.com/little.divas.spa.boutique. To book your daughters ideal birthday party or pamper session, call them on 4735 1703.

FAITH - EMU PLAINS ANGLICAN
Joshua Needs Your Help
Rev Roger Cunningham P: 4735 1001 E: office@emuplains.anglican.asn.au W: www.emuplains.anglican.asn.au
Joshua Farr of Emu Heights is 10 years old and has cerebral palsy. The Lions Club of Emu Plains and the Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation have been approached by Joshua’s occupational therapist, Zara Fallins, of the Cerebral Palsy Alliance, to provide Joshua with a manual wheelchair to assist in his daily living requirements. Joshua currently has a power wheelchair which was funded by Enable NSW (who only fund one chair), and an older manual chair, that he has outgrown. But in order to attend school at Kingswood Public School (where he is integrated into some mainstream classes) and to access buildings with steps and fit into family and friends homes with narrow and limited spaces, another manual chair is required for approx. 40% of the time. Also the power chair needs a trailer or specialised taxi for transport and the family does not currently own an accessible vehicle. Joshua underwent surgery recently to ensure his hips are in the correct position and ready for his new chair. So, everything is together, except that is, for the funding of his new wheelchair. GTK Rehab, the supplier of the manual chair, has costed it, based on Zara’s specifications at around $8,900. The Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation will fund half of the cost and Lions Club of Emu Plains President Ian West says ‘We are seeking corporate and/or individual sponsors/donors for the balance.’ If you are able to assist in this worthwhile community project please contact:

Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend We can thank the Queen for the Public Holiday we’ll enjoy now it’s June. It’s not actually her birthday, that was April 21, but put it in the diary to send her a card next year! Whatever your view on the wisdom of being a constitutional monarchy or a republic, there’s no disputing that she holds a position of symbolic importance, if not authority. But it got me thinking about a little tradition in our house growing up. Every Christmas, no matter how the washing up was going, we all had to be silent for the Queen’s Christmas message. Someone in authority in our house wanted to see it! I don’t remember any of what was said back then, but the family history made me watch the last few years’ messages with some interest. And do you know what’s become clear? The Queen has a committed trust in Jesus Christ as her Lord. In 2014 she said, “For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, whose birth we celebrate today, is an inspiration and an anchor in my life. A role-model of reconciliation and forgiveness, he stretched out his hands in love, acceptance and healing.” And two years earlier she said referred to ‘Christ as our Lord’. ‘Our’ obviously includes the Queen (or the royal ‘we’). What strikes me about that is that one with such responsibility and authority should look to another to meet her needs. Many others, both with and without authority do too. What I and you can have in common with the Queen, even as we enjoy a holiday for her birthday, is the same confidence and hope.

View Design Improvements to Nepean River Green Bridge at Penrith
Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith invites community members to view design improvements made to the future Nepean River Green Bridge. Stuart Ayres said the May 2015 Community Update and revised animated fly-overs are now available online. Roads and Maritime Services has published a submissions report which highlights design improvements made in response to community feedback received during display of the Review of Environmental Factors. “Community feedback has been valuable in planning this key walking and cycling connection which will improve safety and access across the Nepean River while preserving the historic rowing course,” Stuart Ayres said. “We thank community members and organisations for the 49 submissions received which focused on the bridge design and location, safety, minimising disruption during building work
and preserving local amenity. “Improvements have now been made to the design to reduce visual impact and impact to property including reducing the number of bridge supports, lengthening the main bridge span and simplifying alignment. “Site preparation work started in early December and relocation of overhead power lines will start late this year. The selected bridge contractor is expected to start steelwork fabrication off site and start assembling the bridge on site mid next year. “Community members can view a copy of the Nepean River Green Bridge submissions report on the Roads and Maritime website and register for project updates by emailing nepeanbridge@rms.nsw.gov.au or by calling 1800 733 084. Dry the potatoes with kitchen paper and cut lengthways into chips about 1cm-thick. Half fill a deep-fryer or large heavy-based saucepan with oil and heat to 160°C. (If you don't have a deep-fryer thermometer, test a cube of bread - it will turn golden in 30 seconds if the oil is hot enough.) Fry chips in batches for 5-7 minutes or until soft but still pale, then drain. The chips can be prepared to this stage ahead of time.

Preheat oven to 170°C. When you are ready to cook the fish, increase the temperature of the oil to 190°C (a cube of bread will turn golden in 15 seconds). Fry chips again, in batches, for a further 2-3 minutes or until crisp and golden. Drain on kitchen paper. Keep warm in the oven. Maintain the oil temperature at 190°C. Dust the flathead fillets in the extra flour. Dip into batter, one at a time, allowing excess to drain off. Carefully place into the hot oil. Depending on the size of your fryer, cook fish in batches. Fry for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crisp, then drain on kitchen paper. Remove chips from oven. Sprinkle fish and chips with salt. Serve with wedges of lemon and tartare sauce.

PARENTS CORNER
Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Student – Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School, Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
‘Resilience’ is a Bit of a Buzz Word These Days We all want our kids to do well and to be well. One of the things that determines social and emotional wellbeing is “resilience”. Resilience is defined as the ability of an individual to access resources to prevent, minimise, or overcome hardship. The problem, I think, we have when talking about resilience is that we treat it as something separate to our parenting and teaching. We treat it as something separate that our children must learn, like they learn maths, or the rules of whichever sport they choose to play. It is treated as something that we do to, or for, our children. But really, resilience is learnt within environments through children feeling heard and feeling that they belong. Children learn coping skills in relationship with parents and teachers. They learn about feelings and how to manage them, from birth, in relationship with us. The most optimal environment is a positive one, in which parents and teachers regard themselves as guides and educators. There is no point learning how to apply resilience in environments that are harsh, punitive, or unyielding, and having caregivers that shame children on a regular basis. It’s like applying a band aid to a gaping wound. For this reason, I think that parenting programmes like Circle of Security and Triple P are better programmes for promoting resilience in our children that any resilience programme available for children. There has been a steady decline of resilience and mental health in young people over the past 3 decades. What I am increasingly finding in my work with children, is that they feel they cannot bring their struggles and problems to their parents. The message from parents to their children resoundingly is “build a bridge and get over it”, “stop being a drama queen/wuss/sook”, “suck it up princess”, or “man up”. Up to 90% of the children I work with feel they cannot talk to their parents, or when they do they are dismissed, rescued, punished, or ignored. The majority of Year 6 children I speak with, young people heading into high school and adolescence, feel their parents don’t listen to them. No wonder 1 in 4 of our young people will go on to develop clinical depression. In this ‘lucky’ country. Too sad. As an Aboriginal woman said to me many years ago, “you can’t be a strong tree, if you don’t have strong roots”. So how do our children grow strong roots? Australian psychologist, Andrew Fuller, cites the research and advises that those children who are most resilient have been found to have three factors in their life (https://vimeo.com/43821184): 1. Feeling love, connection, and belonging within their family; 2. Having a few friendship groups, so that if they fall out with one group they can align themselves with another group; 3. Having an adult outside the family that likes them. Parenting is the most important factor in children’s resilience. Children grow up in the context of family. I would like to see the resilience debate going forward as placing an emphasis on parents to learn positive parenting skills and providing an environment in which our children grow their resilience skills, rather than placing the onus on children to bear the responsibility for learning resilience skills. How are you creating an environment in which your children can grow strong roots?
Fun and Freaky Ghost Tours Penrith has a rich and diverse history which is represented in the historic buildings located throughout the city. Two of these buildings will host ghost tours in June and July, as part of Penrith Council’s Bicentenary celebrations. The Arms of the Australia Inn and the Old Emu Plains Public School have been chosen as the venues for these special night-time tours. Both buildings are more than 100 years old and have a fascinating history, made up of stories and the experiences of travellers and students who frequented them in the 1800s. Mayor Councillor Ross Fowler OAM said that while there may be eeriness associated with ghosts, the tours will be entertaining and informative and will encourage an interest in local history. “The tours are an opportunity for people to learn about some of the interesting people and places from our past and to get excited about Penrith’s Bicentenary, because it is a significant milestone, “Cr Fowler said. The ghost tours will be led by Craig Powell and Nicky Myers from Western Sydney Paranormal Research and will also be attended by a psychic medium. The tours will be free for adults and children aged over 13yrs to attend. For bookings, phone 4732 7495. For more information call 4732 8063. Ghost Tours will be held at the Arms of Australia Inn from 6.30pm on Saturday 13 June 2015 and the Old Emu Plains School from 6.30pm on Saturday 11 July 2015. The Conversation You Don’t Want to Have Let’s start a conversation with people who are grieving, so they don’t feel isolated and alone. Why is it so difficult to have a conversation with a grief stricken person? It feels uncomfortable to talk about death because in some way we think that’ll bring it closer. Let’s encourage people to grieve the way they need to and support them through their grief rather than ignoring them or wanting them to feel better. This makes people feel crazy. Do we not talk because of our own feelings and the things it triggers in us? Or is it that we don’t want to upset them? FYI you can’t make them any more upset than they already are but you can help them. Let them cry as long and as hard as they want, don’t expect them to stop because you feel uncomfortable. Be compassionate, people need to work through their grief in order to create their new life without their loved one. It takes a lot of energy to work through emotions. The trouble with grief is –You have to feel it to get through it. So, don’t feel that you’ll make it worse by talking to someone about their loved one. PLEASE talk to them, say their loved ones name and always remember that they’ll be touched by grief for the rest of their life.

Chronic Hip Pain Many people have chronic hip pain. Serious hip injuries involving major trauma such as bone breaks require medical interventions e.g. surgery and rehab. But many people still have ongoing hip pain after surgery & rehab. Hip pain can also arise as referred pain from simple back issues, from inflammation & tightness following overuse or excess body-weight; from chronic inflammation e.g. rheumatoid & osteoarthritis, and as a side effect of chronic infection (e.g. Lyme disease). Regardless of the cause, chronic hip pain can make it difficult to walk, stop you working, playing, and doing many of the things you love. Many people become frustrated because they can’t resolve the pain even on strong medications. As with any chronic pain, hip pain is frequently due, simply to unresolved inflammation. Often the key to resolving hip pain lies in finding the cause & breaking the cycle if inflammation naturally. Depending on individual circumstances, dry needling, muscle elongation therapy, specific stretching and in some cases dietary change can be used to great effect. These begin to: 1. Address the causes of inflammation 2. Remove the inflammatory build-up in tissues & 3. Free up muscles & connective tissues in and around the hip.
Often, when the causes have been properly addressed, pain lessens considerably and in some cases disappears altogether. Importantly, as pain levels go down, those on anti-inflammatory drugs should not discontinue their medications abruptly. Rather, carefully controlled reduction in dose is required to avoid rebound reactions. State v state

PAWS A WHILE With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027
Border Collie Fun Day on Sunday 5th July 2015! Dr Katrina Warren and Kelly Gill will be hosting their Fourth Border Collie Fun Day at Castle Hill Showground on Sunday 5th July 2015. ‘Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill are delighted to welcome Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital to our Border Collie Fun Day. Dr Camille Brandt will be our official vet on the day and will also be offering free veterinary checks and answering your Border Collie health questions.’ The Fun Day will be showcasing a wide variety of Border Collie activities, including sheep herding, tricks, flyball, agility, and nose work. There will also be a special appearance by The Wonderdogs. The Wonderdogs are a team of chocolate Border Collies owned by Kelly Gill of Kerodan Kennels. The Wonderdogs star in many television commercials and work with Dr Katrina Warren on stages all over Australia. There will be stalls, show bags, fun competitions, photo opportunities and interactive activities.
Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill are also out to find the fastest border collie over a sprint, racing against the clock. There will also be a beautiful Memory Tree. This will be a special tree where people can pin a photo or write a note to remember a beloved pet who is no longer physically with us. I know many of you have lost precious pets over the past year and this is a beautiful way to honour them and include them in some way. The day will also be raising money for Border Collie Cancer Research at Sydney University, with a huge raffle and lots of other fundraising activities. For more information: www.facebook.com/drkatrinawarren; www.facebook.com/thewonderdogs; www.thewonderdogs. com.au Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Rate Cut Roundup Well the dust has settled on the 0.25% interest rate cut announced by the Reserve Bank in May which took the cash rate to an historical low of just 2.00%. Unfortunately not all of the banks were feeling as generous with many of them passing only part of the rate cut onto their customers. So how does your Home Loan stack up? See below to find out how much of the cut your bank passed on to you.
