The Leura Gardens Festival, now in its 51st year, is a mustvisit attraction for gardeners from all over Australia. And with the sad ending of the long-running Open Gardens Australia, many gardeners are looking to Leura to provide their necessary “gardening fix” for the year. This year’s Leura Gardens Festival will take place from Saturday, October 3 to Sunday, October 11, 2015. Visitors are this year being invited to experience the magic of Spring in the beautiful Blue Mountains. Ten wonderful Leura gardens will be open for the festival, including two brand new to the festival, two returning after a break, plus several magical old favourites. And in an exclusive offer for tour groups, special garden viewings are available for groups of 20+ people in the five days (Monday, September 28 – Friday, October 2, 2015) prior to the main festival. Three of these gardens will only be open in the pre-festival period. Visitors to the main festival can also enjoy the alwayspopular music programme, this year featuring several new performers, and an art show highlighting works done by local artists depicting the festival gardens. Bucket Brigades Are Back in Town For McHappy Day McHappy Day is the biggest fundraising event on the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) calendar and Emu Plains community groups can show their support by forming a ‘Bucket Brigade’ to help the charity raise a record breaking $3.4 million for seriously ill children and their families. On Saturday 17th October this year, McHappy Day will bring the community together for a fun family day out while raising much needed funds for RMHC’s essential programs and services. Local community groups including businesses, dance groups, the fire brigade and ambulance services, are encouraged to get out, get involved and support seriously ill children and their families by volunteering their time to help collect donations in fundraising buckets at their local McDonald’s restauranthapp on the day. Demand for RMHC services has grown exponentially since the charity first begun with the number of people staying at a Ronald McDonald House alone growing from 34 in 1981 to over 6500 in 2014. “The power of family closeness is a driving factor in the work of RMHC, with families telling us that their ability to stay together during their child’s treatment has a positive effect on both their child’s psychological well-being and on the pace of recovery, said Kerry Gordon, McDonald’s Emu Plains licensee. Since its inception McHappy Day has raised over $28 million for RMHC and the Ronald McDonald Houses have collectively provided over 96,000 families with over 2.7 million bed nights, however the need for RMHC services continues to grow with demand from families increasing. “Bucket Brigades are a simple and easy way for people in the Emu Plains community to get involved and help us reach our target of $3.4 million this year, which equates to providing over 25,000 nights accommodation for families at one of the 16 Ronald McDonald Houses across Australia, added Kerry. 100 per cent of funds raised on the day go directly to RMHC to ensure they can continue providing much needed programs and services for seriously ill children and their families including Ronald McDonald Houses, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, Ronald McDonald Family Retreats and the Ronald McDonald Learning Program. A number of Australian celebrities will be doing their bit for McHappy Day to help raise awareness and funds across Australia. Why not join them? To form a ‘Bucket Brigade’ or get involved at your local McDonald’s please contact the McHappy Day Project Office on mchappyday@ppr.com.au.

FAITH - EMU PLAINS ANGLICAN Article by: Rev Roger Cunningham P: 4735 1001 E: office@epac.org.au W: www.epac.org.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm Plus activities for adults and young people throughout the week
Hope When All Seems Hopeless In life there are times of hope, and others that seem hopeless. When have you experienced hope? Maybe as a young adult with the new things you could learn and do. Was it later on, asking or being asked by that special someone to marry you. What about further down the track upon the birth of a child or grand-child? And when have you felt hopeless? When doors closed on dearly held plans, or through your experience of unrequited love. Perhaps a diagnosis. Maybe even a loss. And wisdom is needed to know which time is which, the time for hope and when all hope is lost. Now the prevailing wisdom when attending a funeral is that all hope is lost. A loved one has died. Her life, and her love has come to an end. But such an occasion need not be hopeless. Certainly we will grieve, but .... At the graveside of a good friend Jesus grieved, and wept, but then he spoke these words: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. (John 11:25-26) What blows me away is what He did next to back that promise up. He raised Lazarus from the dead. His words were powerful! The witnesses saw it happen. Then only a few days later He went to his own death. And God raised him from the dead, so that the promise of His words would stick. Jesus offers us hope in the face of what otherwise seems hopeless. Rock solid hope. If He could revolutionise death, no doubt He can revolutionise the rest of life as well.

To celebrate the arrival of Spring on Saturday September 12th the 2nd edition of the Westies Fringe Markets will be held at The Creative Fringe owned by local resident, Debbie O'Connor following an extremely successful debut in May. Photographer and resident of The Creative Fringe Katrina James who runs the website The Westies (www.thewesties.com.au) decided to run the markets to give local makers a chance to sell their goods close to home and to give the people of Penrith and the surrounding suburbs a chance to support their local community. On offer are a range of products and goods produced by many locals including Emu Plains residents: Jessica Killen from Mae Coco who sell soy melts and candles as well as their famous smelly balls. Sam and Christine Bala from Seeds and Soil who sell hand raised heirloom seedlings packaged in biodegradable pots. This is a fantastic opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy some Spring sunshine. Make plans to meet up with friends for a coffee, start your Christmas shopping and support local. To see a full list of stall holders, please go to thecreativefringe.com.au.

PARENTS CORNER
Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services P: 0409 986121 or 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting In Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com Last month, I listed the services available to parents who are interested in learning more about parenting. This month I said I would write about what to do if you are concerned that your child may have a disability or disorder. The main difficulties that I see in children in the work that I do are autism, anxiety, ADHD, and sensory processing disorder. The national statistics on these conditions are: Autism – 1 in 100 children Anxiety – 1 in 10 children ADHD – 1 in 10 children Sensory processing disorder – 1 in 20 children Of course, there are alot of other disorders and syndromes that can affect children’s thinking, feeling, and doing. Frequently, parents are concerned about getting their child assessed for fear of their child being labelled. It is my experience that children like to know the reason why they are different to other children, it makes sense to them. A diagnosis also helps teachers to accommodate your child’s unique needs and abilities. And more importantly, the earlier the diagnosis the earlier you can start intervention, and early intervention makes a huge difference in the lives of children. You can discuss your concerns about your child’s development with your General Practitioner (doctor). Your GP may refer you to a paediatrician or you may ask for a Mental Health Care Plan which will allow you to claim a Medicare rebate on the fees to see a psychologist or occupational therapist for an assessment. Psychologists and paediatricians can assess for autism and ADHD. Psychologists can assess for anxiety. Occupational Therapists can assess for sensory processing disorder. It is very important to get an assessment by a professional and not to diagnose your child yourself or listen to other people who are not qualified to give you advice. Once you have a diagnosis, there are services which provide support for parents depending on the different ability your child has. For example, the Luke Priddis Foundation, ASPECT, Northcott, Lifestart, Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services, and Stepping Stones Triple P. Parents find that connecting with other parents who understand their child’s challenges, offer a listening ear and helpful suggestions, is very supportive and a good form of self-care. These services may also offer activities for the children or the family as a whole.

The stories, experiences and memories of people who live or work in Penrith have been recorded for a short video series to celebrate Penrith’s Bicentenary. The seven-part series features locals of all ages and backgrounds reminiscing about growing up in Penrith, and sharing the places and things they love most about the City. A number of well-known Penrith locals; Olympian Jessica Fox, Triple M Presenter Mark Geyer, Penrith Panthers General Manager Phil Gould, Federal Member for Lindsay Fiona Scott MP and Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres MP appear in the videos. A video is posted on Council’s Facebook page each week culminating in the final video of the series being posted the week of the Bicentenary Festival in September. Penrith City Mayor Councillor Ross Fowler OAM said this project revealed a personal side to Penrith’s history. “When we talk about Penrith’s Bicentenary we tend to focus on the people who helped to establish the City some 200 years ago and while this is important, it’s not where the story ends,” Cr Fowler said. “In their own special way, the people who live and work here have made - and continue to make - an enormous contribution to Penrith. The inquisitive, friendly, accepting and innovative nature of the people in our community has shaped the fabric of our City. “This video series really highlights that history isn’t just what’s been written in a book. The story of Penrith is also made up of the personal experiences and memories of our local community,” Cr Fowler said. To view these videos, sign up to Facebook and visit Council’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/penrith.city.council

HEALTH MATTERS

Green Juice to Avoid Tight Muscles and Improve Performance A host of suffering is caused (at least in part) by tight inflamed muscles. Lower back pain, hip pain, shoulder pain, neck pain, knee, leg & foot pain, migraine, underbreathing, a general feeling of stress, bruxism, and many more. Over and above remedial therapy, one of the things we get our clients to do (when we’re helping them with some of these issues) is begin ‘green juicing’. So why might something as simple as juice of green leafy vegetables be so good for muscle (and overall health). Here’s my top 10 reasons. Greens juice contains excellent amounts of: 1. Bitter compounds which activate digestion & absorption, by releasing hormones that aid insulin production and glucose, amino acid & magnesium uptake for energy production muscle building. 2. Nitrate – allows the body to make nitric oxide which is vital to a person’s digestive function allowing them to extract more nutrients (vitamins, minerals); also ensures excellent oxygen delivery to muscles under stress. 3. Magnesium - vital to muscle insulin sensitivity, glucose storage, utilisation & energy production, as well as muscle contraction & relaxation. 4. Calcium for muscle contraction and relaxation 5. Iron, vital for oxygen delivery (haemoglobin in red blood cells), and for oxygen use in energy production (myoglobin) 6. Potassium – vital to electrical activity of nerves and muscle. 7. Vitamin B 2 - important in glucose & fat burning by muscle for energy production 8. Beta-carotenes - powerful antioxidants; converted to vitamin A shown in animal experiments to aid repair of injured muscle 9. Vitamin C & E which are powerful antioxidants to mop up free radicals produced by exercise. Vitamin C helps fat burning by muscle. 10. Folate (vitamin B9) - vital nutrient that helps muscle cell genes respond appropriately to exercise; also vital for making red blood cells which deliver oxygen during exercise. People who take up green juicing frequently find that the ‘health and flexibility’ of their muscles and connective tissues improves considerably. If you have a problem with any of the above conditions why not come talk to us at BHW – see our ad for contact details.
Support For Ice Addicts in Western Sydney Western Sydney will see $1.6 million invested over four years for specialised treatment and support services, based out of Mt Druitt, for individuals using amphetamine-type stimulants such as ice. Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres and Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies welcomed the funding which is part of the NSW Government’s $11 million election commitment to expand services across NSW. Mr Ayres said the services will help treat addiction and avoid its chronic effects. “We all know the negative effects ice use can have on our community. That’s why we are expanding stimulant treatment services, Mr Ayres said. The new treatment services will build on the work of the effective treatment models to deliver appropriate services and more interconnected pathways of care across the health system. Tanya Davies said it was important to help people in the community get clean before they are in the grips of addiction. “The stimulant treatment services in our region will have a focus on improving pathways of care for people who are using crystal meth, with a priority focus on providing specialised treatment for culturally and linguistically diverse groups, Tanya Davies said. Drug addiction affects people of all ages and across a range of communities and even occasional recreation use can become a harmful habit; seek help early before it takes over. Anyone concerned about how ice is affecting them or a loved one are encouraged to seek help by speaking with a GP, calling the Alcohol and Drug Information Service on 1800 422 599 or by visiting www.yourroom.com.au for further information. Plants are sourced from a wide variety of nurseries so visitors from any climate should be able to find some treasures to suit their particular conditions. Cricketers in Emu and Leonay and right across NSW will continue to receive extra support this season to achieve their sporting dreams, as Cricket NSW and McDonald’s celebrate the renewal of their partnership for a second year. The partnership sees McDonald’s as the Major Community Partner of Cricket NSW for the 2015/16 season. McDonald’s will continue to be involved with Cricket NSW on a number of levels including major sponsorship of the Sydney Cricket Association and Country Cricket NSW. In addition, McDonald’s will continue to support recipients of the Cricket NSW Facility Grants program. In 2014/15 the program funded over $5.8 million worth of facility upgrades
delivered for grassroots cricket across the state, offering local cricket clubs assistance in improving practice and playing facilities to help make cricket more accessible. Local McDonald’s restaurants will also engage with their respective local cricket clubs to host sign-up days and other events and encourage active participation in the sport. They will also recognise a McDonald’s junior cricketer of the week from both metropolitan and regional NSW throughout the cricket season. Cricket NSW General Manager of Commercial Operations and Communications, Brett Richardson, welcomed the partnership with McDonald’s continuing for another year. “We are delighted to have McDonald’s on board for another season. Both Cricket NSW and McDonald’s are passionate about getting kids active, and we will be using the significant reach that McDonald’s has both in-store and through social media to promote our recruitment messages and get kids playing cricket this summer. The partnership continues to reinforce the commitment from McDonald’s encouraging junior development in local sporting and community groups. “After an incredibly successful inaugural year, we are pleased to once again partner with Cricket NSW. At Macca’s we value the development of important life skills such as teamwork and sportsmanship, and we encourage locals from Emu and Leonay to sign up and get involved with their local cricket club. “We hope our support of Cricket NSW will help to increase the number of Aussies batting, bowling and fielding for our national sport, concluded Kerry Gordon, McDonald’s Blaxland, McDonald's Emu Plains and McDonald's Lithgow licensee.

COUNSELLING CORNER Article by: Cait Wotherspoon from Indigo Counselling & Psychotherapy W: indigotherapies.com.au P: 0434 865 429 E: cait@indigotherapies.com.au
Kids Can Drown Right in Front of You Spring is just around the corner and we all spend more time outdoors and in the pool. I want to share a personal, painful story with you. I’ve always thought that when kids are drowning, they make a lot of noise. Truth is, they don’t – it’s a silent killer. A mum and I were standing in the bathroom supervising 3 children in the bath (5 & 3 years old and a 9 months old). The mum and I were talking when the oldest one said calmly, “Mum look at John. He was quietly floating under the water, we had no idea he was drowning right in front of us. We pulled him out and he coughed and spluttered but he was okay. A new report out recently states that supervision needs to be more direct, maintaining contact with the child in the water at all times. The good news is that 90% of children who needed resuscitation were given CPR and this contributed to a decrease in drowning deaths. Statistics from Westmead Children’s Hospital found that a lapse in parental supervision contributed to more than half of all near-drowning events. The brain starts to die in 2 – 3 minutes after being starved of oxygen. Spring check list: 1. Learn CPR 2. Keep pool gates closed 3. Supervise our children Have a great, fun and safe Spring.

PAWS A WHILE With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027
Theresa had a Baby Girl!!!! Congratulations to Theresa and her partner on the safe delivery of baby Zahra Grace. Theresa is currently on maternity leave. RSPCA Cupcake Day Was a Huge Success A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA. We hosted a Cupcake Week at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital starting on Monday 17th August 2015. Thank you to everyone who came in and donated and ate a cupcake or two. Also a huge thank you for the online donations. We raised over $500.00 for the RSPCA with your help. Renai, Sheridan, Rachel, Stacey, Eden, Lizzie, Jessica, Ben and Vicki cooked up a storm and provided the most delicious peppermint slice, other delicious slices, and of course cupcakes. The Pupcakes were made from the Hills WD science diet baked into cupcakes and iced with peanut butter. Pony and Bella loved eating the Pupcakes! Thanks again for supporting a great cause! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community, through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations,
fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants, to support its vital daily work. We wish every day was cupcake day! Dog Lovers Show Was Fantastic The Sydney Dog Lovers Show on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th August 2015 at The Hordern Pavilion was fantastic! Camille Brandt attended the Dog Lovers Show as a special guest of Rose-Hip Vita and took Pony and Bella. Camille answered numerous questions from the public at the Rose-Hip Vital stall. I was so proud of Pony and Bella, they loved all of the attention. Pony was such a crowd pleaser. Bella was clever (as usual), she just laid down and let the people come to her for a pat. Pony walked up to everyone for a pat and by lunchtime he needed a well earned nap. The Sydney Dog Lovers Show had over 150+ exhibitors showcasing dog products and services in Australia. So many freebies! There were so many celebrities, including Dr Katrina & The Wonderdogs, Dr Lisa Chimes (Bondi Vet), James & Anthony (Village Vets Australia on the The LifeStyle Channel) and Laura Vissaritis (Dognitive Therapy) as MC. What a great weekend! Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www. orchardhillsvet.com.au.

MONEY MATTERS PARENTS CORNER
Article by: David & Leonie Jackson from Great Aussie Dream P: 4733 8592 E: admin@gad.com.au
It’s Spring Selling Season. Are You Ready? Spring is here and frankly I’m glad to have warmer weather ahead. Historically, the Real Estate market also heats up in Spring due to the fact that sellers often delay listing their homes during Winter in favour of warmer months when more people are out and about. For this reason Spring is known as the “Selling Season. With more stock available this presents a great opportunity for buyers to find their dream home or that investment property gem. But you had better be prepared because in this competitive market, most homes are snapped up on the day they hit the market. As the old adage goes, “He (or she) who hesitates is lost. So how can you be prepared to act when your perfect property hits the market? Here are my top 3 tips to help you beat the competition. 1. Knowledge is Power. Research your target suburb so that you understand the value of property. Look at recent sales and compare prices achieved on similar homes to the type you are looking for. Keep in mind that according to RP Data home values have grown by 15% in the year to July 2015. To put that into perspective, a home valued at $500,000 is currently increasing in value by $6,250 per month, so a sale 3 months ago will be worth nearly $20,000 more today. 2. Legal Representation. Meet with and appoint your Solicitor or Conveyancer ahead of time. Purchasing a home will probably be the biggest purchase of your life and you need someone protecting your interests throughout the transaction. Plus, if you make a successful offer the Agent will want to know who is representing you. 3. Finance Ready. Nothing says “Serious Buyer to an Agent more than someone with his or her finance sorted and adds serious weight to your offer. At Great Aussie Dream, we’re all about helping our Clients ready themselves to purchase, with free RP Data property reports, great advice, some of the best rates in the market and of course our Award Winning service.
