Buring House The Leonay heritage home of Leo Buring the wine maker is finally being restored having been derelict for 25 years. Leo and his wife, Nay called their home Leonay which became the name of the present suburb. Local builder Ben Hitchon has spent two years restoring the home on Leonay Parade to its former glory and is ready to move in with his family in the next few weeks. Over the years the house had been vandalised with every pane of glass smashed, ceilings

Volunteers’ Hard Work Vandalised
Tammy’s Boxing Tammy needs to find sponsors to help her raise $4,200 to get her to Barbados in September to fight in the world titles. 24 year old Tammy only started boxing two years ago. Her grandfather was a professional boxer and some of her male cousins box. Tammy says “I love the sport and although I won the welterweight title last year I am now fighting middleweight (under 75kg) to be able to train for the 2012 London Olympics where there are only three weight classes.” Tammy trains twice a day in preparation for a fight otherwise once a day. The photos show her in action and outside the Richmond Boxing Club. The funding for female boxing is very political as when the original budget was set female boxing was not an Olympic sport. Any sponsorship for Tammy would be a great help and you can contact her by email tammy.taylor@live.com.au.
Last month a small group of Bushcare volunteers planted 1500 sedges in Clissold Reserve, Emu Heights. Disappointingly most of them have been pulled out and thrown around. This is so disheartening for the volunteers and a waste of time and resources. If anybody has any information about this vandalism please contact Janet Rannard at Penrith Council on 4732 8088. Residents are able to report incidents at any time to Council rangers on 4732 7543 who will investigate.

History of the Arms of Australia Inn Museum The Arms of Australia Inn, or ‘Mortimer’s House’ as it was also known, was one of 23 road side inns in the Nepean District and the last stop before starting up the mountain road and the trail west. It is believed that the building was built in two sections, the first around 1826 and was purchased on 1st May 1833 by Joseph Barrow Montefiore. He later split the land in two in 1840 and sold half to John Mortimer, who commenced trading as an inn on the main road to Bathurst, Orange and the gold diggings.
The Cobb and Co coaches that plied the road day and night also used to stop at the inn as did many bullock

team drivers taking stock and provisions over the mountains. As the inn only had two main rooms, most overnight travellers had to sleep in the barn, on the veranda or under their wagons. A year later the laws were changed and Inns had to have separate rooms for ‘Ladies and Children’. Mortimer added four additional rooms for bedrooms. As bushrangers were a great problem in the area, the Arms and a second inn at the top of the hill at Glenbrook had a system to warn travellers if bushrangers were about. This was accomplished by hanging a lantern on the northern end of the building which was visible to Glenbrook Inn. If the lantern was burning, the road was clear, but if it was not, the stagecoach drivers and other travellers would spend the night at the Arms and continue on in daylight. The Inn continued to prosper till the 1860s, when the rail line came through. People began to use the train instead of going by road and trade died off. The inn was sold in 1865 and became a private house for the next

In 1971 the building, now owned by Penrith City Council, was derelict after years of neglect and was to be demolished, when the Historical Society, with the help of Mr Ivan Casson, stepped in and saved it. The society took control of the building and began the slow work of restoration until it was officially opened on 27th March 1976 as a museum of local history for the Nepean district.

Environmental flows for Nepean River The State Government has announced the start of new environmental flows for the Hawkesbury-Nepean River following the completion of a $39 million upgrade to dams and weirs across the system. NSW Minister for Water, Phil Costa said the new environmental flows were a major investment in one of Sydney’s most important river systems and a key part of the NSW Government’s Metropolitan Water Plan to secure water for people and the environment. Overall the new environmental flow rules will see a tenfold increase in the amount of water released to restore the health of the waterway. “The Hawkesbury-Nepean is the lifeblood of greater Sydney – it’s a place where families come to enjoy time together and it’s also a vital natural asset. Families returning to the river over the coming years will notice better water quality, more native fish and birds and fewer weeds. “These environmental flows will help protect the endangered giant dragonfly and macquarie perch as well as 10 other native fish species including the vulnerable Australian grayling,
the Australian bass, Australian smelt, a range of gudgeon, mullet and glaxias species and freshwater herring that depend on the river system. It will also help protect local animals including the azure kingfisher, black bittern, pectoral sandpiper, white-bellied sea eagle and large footed myotis, a fishing bat.” Previously, 24 million litres a day was released from the dams regardless of inflows and rainfall. Now more water is released downstream when it rains, and less during dry times, therefore mimicking the natural flows of the river. The major improvements to the weirs along the river help the new flows make it downstream and have modified or replaced fishways to allow fish to move more freely up and down the river and breed. “These new environmental flows better mimic the natural flows of the river – the amount of water that is released is calculated each day based how much water flows into the dams from the catchments.

Buring House The suburb of Leonay takes its name from the riverside property of the well-known Australian wine grower Hermann Paul Leopold Buring – better known as Leo Buring - and his wife Ida – nicknamed Nay. Teaspoon medicine warning PARENTS are being warned not to give their children medicine using an ordinary teaspoon because of the risk of overdose. A study found teaspoons vary from a capacity of 2.5ml to 7.3ml, meaning youngsters could be receiving an inaccurate dose. Instead, parents should use the special spoon provided with a medicine or buy a syringe or spoon with measurements on it. They should also consult the medicine’s packaging to make sure their child is given the right dose for their age. Experts from Greece and the US looked at 71 teaspoons and 49 tablespoons collected from 25 households. They said a parent using one of the biggest teaspoons would be giving their child 192 per cent more medicine than a parent using the smallest teaspoon. Some of the tablespoons were also twice the size of others.
The experts, writing in the International Journal of Clinical Practice, said that not only is there a risk of overdose, but some youngsters could be given too little medicine. They said: “Teaspoons and tablespoons are unreliable dosing devices, and thus their use should no longer be recommended.” Professor Matthew Falagas, director of the Alfa Institute of Biomedical Sciences in Athens, was one of the authors on the study. He said: “The variations between the domestic spoon sizes was considerable and in some case bore no relation to the proper calibrated spoons included in many commercially available children’s medicines. “We not only found wide variations between households, we also found considerable differences within households. “Dosing and administering medication to children is different from adults. “Paediatric dosages need to be adjusted to age and body weight and, as a result, children are considered to be more vulnerable to dosage errors than adults.
