Here we are at the pointy end of the year. For most, it’s a busy time of juggling numerous end of year events and commitments, all the while attempting to remain cool, calm and collected as the Festive Season approaches. Yes! The shopping centres become abuzz with people everywhere, frantically in search of the right gift for those near and dear. Workplaces strive to conclude the year that was, and families come together to celebrate special time with their loved ones. Christmas is a magical time of year, that brings with it love and laughter, memories of good times had and good times to come. It’s also a time to reflect on the year that was, and fond memories of those that have left us too soon. Cait highlight’s some important points about Social Isolation on page 12, while Narelle speaks of strategies for calming children and their emotions. For those that celebrate the festivities of Melbourne Cup Day and the race that stops a nation, I hope you backed a winner! Be sure to check out all of our preChristmas tips and hints, to help you sail smoothly through the lead up to the Festive Season. Does our Work Have Meaning? Is work a joy for you or a chore? Do you enjoy doing it, or is it what you earn from it that lights your fire? Work is part of all our lives, whether we’re paid for it, or we do it voluntarily. Actually, the Bible reveals that God gave us work as part of who He made us. It’s a good thing, as anyone whose been out of work would probably agree. It not only allows us to earn our income to pay for what we need (and what we want!) it allows us to reflect the character of God... You see the Bible tells us God is a worker. Not only did He make the world, but he keeps it running in every way. And as He’s a worker, so we’re given the privilege to be like Him. In fact, as He works He could afford to be self centred (He is God after all!) but instead He chooses to be other person centred. He serves us through His work. So too our work is both good for us, and allows us to serve others. The plumber. The carer. The teacher. The manager. The parent. And so when we work, we reflect the character of God Of course, frustration in work is a problem. And that problem points to the greater problem of where we stand with God. But Jesus work of coming, dying, and rising, means that even that problem can be overcome! God’s work give us hope. So work on - your work has meaning. Rev Roger Cunningham

McHappy Day 2014 Breaks Fundraising Record Australians have dug deep this McHappy Day, donating a record-breaking $3.2 million over the weekend to help Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) support seriously ill children and their families. To put this into perspective, this year’s fundraising total equates to over 24,600 nights’ accommodation in a Ronald McDonald House for families with seriously ill children. While final figures are still being tallied, in NSW and the ACT, in excess of over $1 million has been raised. A number of celebrities and well-known personalities, including Australian actor Ryan Kwanten, got behind the event by visiting McDonald’s restaurants across the country to help raise funds for the charity on the day. Community groups also played a big role with Scouts groups, police and numerous local businesses giving up time to help collect donations or provide gifts to be raffled on the day. “It’s a fantastic result for Ronald McDonald House Charities – Australians have truly shown us their support and contributed valuable funds which will allow us to expand our programs so we can help even more families in need, said Malcolm Coutts OAM, CEO, Ronald McDonald House Charities. “I want to acknowledge the efforts of everyone who has been involved with McHappy Day and thank the volunteers who have been behind McHappy Day every year, helping raise funds for families with seriously ill children, while making it a fun and enjoyable day, said Mr Coutts. To date, McHappy Day has raised over $31 million for RMHC. All funds raised go directly to RMHC to support programs such as the Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms and the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. The 14 Houses across Australia have provided more than 89,000 families with a homeaway-from-home while their child underwent treatment for serious illness at a nearby hospital. While McHappy Day is now over, RMHC needs ongoing support so that it can continue helping families with seriously ill children. To find out more or to donate visit www.rmhc.org.au

Penrith Welcomes New Flexi ...continued from Pg.1 Ambulance “For patients with extra needs there is clearly a need to deliver these specialised services and ensure the right resources are available to support them. “I’m incredibly pleased to see our local ambulance service has been enhanced. Our local paramedics provide both lifechanging and life-saving care and this enhancement will allow them to get on with their jobs safely. Health Minister Jillian Skinner launched the new vehicles this week. “These vehicles are an important investment as they deliver benefits for both patients and paramedics, Mrs Skinner said. “I have the utmost respect and admiration for the state’s paramedics and believe they should have the best resources available to carry out their lifesaving work.

1.

Use only quality local fruit and pre-soak for at least a week in Brandy or Rum. This will help to deliver rich flavour and remove sharpness of some of the citrus fruits used.

2.

The calico cloth used to dress the pudding needs to be large enough to be able to tie tightly together; you can always trim it after the pudding has been tied and about to go into the pot. Don’t be shy with the tie!

3.

To prevent this beautiful mixture from sticking to the calico, soak the cloth overnight and ensure the cloth is wet with a generous coating of flour before filling it.

4.

To avoid mould from growing, once the pudding is prepared, hang in a low-humidity, cool-dry area. The flavours will mature and form a rich, flavoursome pudding for the whole family to enjoy.

5.

A pudding is more than a decadent dessert- it’s a sweet time when the family comes together, tells stories.. and enjoys a sugar high. The pud is to be made with love, care and time.

World COPD Day One in seven Australians 40 years or older has COPD and half of those who have progressed to a stage where they are experiencing symptoms will not know that they have it.1,2 November 19 is World COPD Day and Lung Foundation Australia is raising awareness of the prevalence and impact of COPD. COPD is a leading cause of death in Australia. COPD is a lung disease that includes chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic asthma that isn’t fully reversible. It is important to recognise the risk factors and symptoms of COPD so that you can get an early diagnosis. The main risk factors in Australia are: • Current or past history of smoking • Occupational exposure to dust, gas or fumes There are also some genetic causes of COPD. Typical symptoms include breathlessness, a cough that won’t go away and phlegm production. Finding COPD early gives the best chance to slow down lung deterioration and start managing your symptoms. Lung Foundation Australia encourages people 35 years or older who have a history of smoking or had occupational exposure to dust, gas and/or fumes to have a lung health check. COPD is largely preventable and treatable. While there is no

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com Last month, I offered some strategies for calming young children when their emotions are getting overwhelming for them. This month, it’s all about the older children, those over 6 years of age. Some parents get scared of their children’s strong emotions. They try to dampen them down, or they dismiss them, encourage or bribe the child into feeling something else, jolly them up, redirect them, or even rescue them. Have a think about which emotions your parents didn’t cope with well when you were a kid growing up – anger, sadness, curiosity, fear, joy, shame (humiliation). When reflecting on this with parents, they have said to me “my parents didn’t cope with any of the so-called ‘negative feelings’, if I got sad, scared, or angry they would tell me to go to my room and come out when I was happy”. Now these parents find that they have difficulties in helping their own children process the same feelings because they have never been shown how. They also have difficulties accepting that these feelings are OK within themselves, and this leads to shame and self-loathing, which then leads to all sorts of dysfunctional ways of coping such as emotional eating, retail therapy, drinking, smoking, depression, or anxiety. All feelings are OK (yes, even anger). Feelings are a normal part of being human. It’s what we do with our feelings that counts! In my work with children, I always encourage them to locate the particular feeling in their body. This is based on neuroscience (which I don’t have enough space here to go into in detail). If a child can become adept at picking up cues from their body that they are getting overwhelmed they can calm themselves quicker. It’s like an early warning system. Support the child to locate where he feels the anger in his body. The answers I have heard from kids range from the feet (to run), the fists (to get ready to fight), the heart, the tummy, and the head. It’s the same process for adults and many of the parents I have worked with say they feel it in their chest. Here are the steps to calming down for older children… 1. Ask yourself “How does my body feel?” 2. Try to calm down by: - taking three deep breaths (inhale through the nose, breathe deep down into the belly, and exhale through the nose); - counting backwards slowly; - think calming thoughts; - talk yourself through it (examples – I can do it, I can get through this, calming down will make me feel and think better). Some of the children I have worked with say they got so angry at times that they had to use all of the above strategies. Some said they had to count down from 100. Some said they went to their ‘happy place’ to think calming thoughts. Some said that three deep breaths was just not enough. I encourage the child to think about the incident later and ask herself – why was I angry, what did I do, what did and didn’t work, what could I have done differently. I also encourage the child to praise herself for the things she did well. When kids have big emotions, parents try to reason with them or lecture them. They ask them why they are like that, what happened, they tell them to calm down without guiding them through the calming down process. Neuroscience is showing us that when humans are in a heightened state emotionally, the logical and rational part of the brain shuts down. There is no point trying to reason with a child in the height of an emotion, it’s like trying to read Shakespeare to a dog – it doesn’t make any sense! They need to calm down first.

Swimming Lessons Can Save Lives No matter whether it’s fresh, salt or chlorinated water, each aquatic option presents a potential risk to a family’s wellbeing, if basic swimming skills and water safety practices aren’t taken seriously. “Learning, and knowing how to swim, is the most wonderful gift any parent can offer their child. Not only can these skills help save lives, it can holistically assist children with their overall development, said Keryn Daley, from Dive In Swim Academy, in Penrith. However, accidental childhood drowning claims the greatest number of young lives than any other tragedy. Between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014, 20 children between the ages of zero and four years, drowned in Australia; 70 per cent of these drowning deaths occurred in pools. Leading learn-to-swim authority, Swim Australia, suggest children as young as four months can start swimming lessons; enough time to allow a medical history to develop, the infant’s immune system to strengthen, and bonding to occur with the primary caretaker. “After four months, lessons in a gentle and developmentally appropriate program can, and should be started right away, said Swim Australia CEO, Ross Gage. By three years of age, children who have kept up their swimming lessons from a young age, should be able to perform certain life saving skills, such as:

• Returning to the wall if they should fall in, • Climbing out from a pool ledge, • Swimming up to five metres, • Kicking with a kick board,

• Using basic arm stroke movements; and • Possessing a general understanding of water safety rules, like – ‘never to go swimming without an adult’.

To ensure your child gains the best swim school experience possible, parents should consider the visual stimulus in and around the swim centre, staff approachability and connection with the children, and the applied swim program.

Pain - You Don’t Have To Suffer Pain is not pleasant. It can have many causes. It can interfere with a person’s quality of life and general functioning. It is natures’ way of letting you know something is wrong. SCENAR Therapy is an alternative therapy which is being used by many well-known individual sporting personalities, as well as sporting teams. It is an advanced form of electro-neurostimulation effective in treating acute and chronic pain. The SCENAR device is a small, hand-held transdermal electro-neurostimulation device that delivers non-invasive, therapeutic electro-stimulation via the skin and involves a highly variable signal with little discomfort. What makes SCENAR therapy different? The SCENAR device, when in contact with the skin, shows the therapist exactly where the body has the greatest capacity to receive the stimulation. The digital readout of the device tells the therapist the optimal area to focus therapy to give the greatest pain relief. If you have: • Pain where nothing else has worked. • Nerve numbness, pain, or burning that is not relieved by injections or medications. • Long term problems from injuries. • Recent injuries or trauma to the body of any kind, SCENAR Therapy can help. So if you are experiencing pain, particularly if it is affecting your quality of life, you owe it to yourself and your family to get some help. You don’t just have to grin and bear it. SCENAR therapy is emerging as one of the most powerful healing tools in the field of complementary medicine. St Columbas Fire

More than 25 firefighters fought a blaze at St Columbas Catholic College in Springwood that broke out last month. Crews found several classrooms well alight towards the back of the school, which is surrounded by thick bush-land. Police believe the fire was deliberately lit. “It was totally engulfed in fire,” said Superintendent Tom Cooper from Fire and Rescue NSW. Flames were leaping into the air, they had a building that was about 80 metres by 40 metres and three quarters of it was in flames.” Source: http://cathnews.com/archives/cath-news-archive/19312suspiciousfire-at-blue-mountains-school

Discus Upgrades for Emu Plains Little Athletics Club Complete Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith, met with Mr Ken Forti, President of Emu Plains Little Athletics Club (EPLAC) to view their discus upgrades following the announcement earlier this year on their successful application for funding through the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program. “Emu Plains Little Athletics Club received a grant of $5,000 under the 2013 Community Building Partnership Program,” said Stuart Ayres. Mr Forti said the EPLAC was delighted to receive the funds and the upgraded discus nets have already been put to good use. This year membership at EPLAC has reached 430 making it one of the largest athletics clubs in the area. The club encourages all their athletes to do their very best, to have fun and get fit in a safe and friendly environment, and to “strive with honor”. Stuart Ayres said it was my privilege to have recommended this project for funding and it’s great to see the benefits it provides for our community. “Our club is very appreciative of this grant which was organised by Stuart and we thank him for his continued support of our club,” added Mr Forti.

Michelle Beech ND, Naturopath

Do You Feel the Love? I was just thinking this morning how lucky I am to have such wonderful people around me. I have friends and family who are there when I need them. There are also strangers that give me their smile when I’m feeling down and really need it. I have amazing experiences in the world that 10 years ago I would never have thought possible. I pondered about how our community has changed. Some people are very lonely and we live in a city where thousands of people are living close by. I met up with a friend for coffee (she’s a pharmacist) and Mary (not her real name) was telling me about how she is sometimes the only social contact that some people have. They often can’t get an appointment to see their doctor for three weeks, so she is known in the town as one of the old fashioned pharmacists who will talk about their medication and be a shoulder to cry on when needed. This got me wondering about those many lives she’s touched who would otherwise be lonely and feel that they don’t count. Social isolation and feeling lonely can have a significant impact on your mental health. This can lead to having a negative effect of low self-esteem, sleep problems and feeling more stressed. Sometimes feeling lonely and disconnected from society can be overwhelming and lead to suicidal thoughts. We are social beings and need others around us to feel like we matter. Going out, laughing and having fun is essential to good mental health. Cait Wotherspoon is a registered nurse, qualified teacher and a practicing counsellor and psychotherapist. Cait’s passion is to help people who have suffered loss. Using her training Cait seeks to empower her clients to breakthrough and rediscover the joys a full and rewarding life offers. Cait offers grief, loss and bereavement counselling for adults, adolescents, children and families in the Penrith CBD. Pop over to Cait’s website www.indigotherapies.com.au

How do we define wellness? It is much more than the absence of disease. Wellness is having energy to burn, a strong immune system, resilience, emotional and mental stability, clarity of mind, great looking skin, healthy BMI/body weight and resistance to chronic disease states such as diabetes, auto-immunity, arthritis, dementia, cancer etc. Wellness means we don’t have to rely on a cocktail of pharmaceutical medications to be able to function, to be without pain and inflammation. Wellness ensures we are inspired to move our bodies, to dance, to exercise and to participate in all life has to offer. How do we attain this state of equilibrium? Learning how to safeguard our precious health. Making right choices at the supermarket, mindful eating, practicing moderation when consuming foods and drinks that are not healthy. Learning to appreciate fresh whole natural real foods. Not desensitising our tastebuds with artificial flavours, salt, MSG and sugar. We can become well with the right advice and input. Sometimes certain conditions are greatly benefited by targeted therapeutic nutritional supplements and incremental dietary and lifestyle changes which make a world of difference. I would love to help you discover a healthier you. Wellness is possible and totally achievable. I welcome your enquiries. You can contact me on 0414 944 112 or email naturopath@michellebeech.com.au

Superannuation and Insurance Who would have thought that changing one three letter word for another could make a difference to insurance cover within superannuation? But, changing the definition of the types of insurance allowed to be held through superannuation has had just such an outcome. That’s because, from 1 July 2014, the only new type of insurance policies that can be held through a super fund are those that match up with a superannuation condition of release. As a result, in order for total and permanent disability (TPD) insurance cover to be allowed inside super, there is no longer a choice of ‘own’ or ‘any’ occupation – essentially only ‘any’ occupation type policies will be permitted. Similarly, new policies of trauma cover (also known as critical illness insurance) will no longer be allowed inside super. Both changes are based on the same premise – making sure you can access insurance payouts following an insured event. So nowadays, while existing policies will be grandfathered, the only new policy that a self-managed super fund can take out is one where the terms of that cover essentially match a condition of release. This will in effect limit the available types of cover within super to life, TPD (any occupation) and income protection. What is Covered? TPD insurance provides cover if you suffer a long-term disability that stops you from working. It may be as a result of events such as an accident, cancer, heart attack, mental illness or stroke. ‘Any’ occupation cover means there will be no payout by the insurer unless you have totally lost the ability to work in any capacity. By comparison, ‘own’ occupation cover means the insurer pays out if you are unable to perform your existing occupation. For instance, if you were a surgeon and lost your hand in an accident, then clearly you could not continue working in this capacity. As a result this would trigger an insurance payout under the ‘own’ definition.

But maybe you could practise as a general practitioner. As a result, under an ‘any’ occupation policy you would not receive a payout. Conditions of Release Even if an insurer agrees to pay your claim, you may not receive the money if the policy was bought through your super fund. That’s because your super fund will not necessarily be able to pass on the proceeds until you meet a condition of release. So, for example, to receive a superannuation payout on the grounds of disablement you must meet the permanent incapacity condition of release for ‘any’ occupation. If you already have an ‘own occupation’ type policy in super, you may not be able to access the money from your super fund under the permanent incapacity condition of release and as such you’d need to meet another condition of release like retiring or reaching the age of 65 to receive the proceeds of a payout. Because of this potential danger, the rules have been changed for new policies taken out from 1 July 2014. Inside or Outside Super? For many, these recent changes may be grounds for holding some TPD cover inside super with additional cover outside super to benefit from the ‘own’ occupation option. There are a number of advantages in holding insurance inside super. You can have your fund pay the premiums from your pretax super contributions rather than your post-tax income, or you could choose to have the premiums deducted from your super balance to help your cash flow. But there are also downsides, as the table below shows. For instance, if a payout is made in your super fund and you are under 60, you may have to pay tax on your TPD benefit. However, if your benefit qualifies as a superannuation disability benefit under the Tax Act, then you’ll receive an increased tax-free component based on service foregone until retirement. So the younger you are, the higher your tax-free component.
