Helping The Garden Grow

very seriously,” said Tony Best, “and so I believe the garden project is sustainable”. Mr Best is very enthusiastic about community involvement. “Emu Plains Public School is a hub in the local community,” he said. Mulched garden beds and protection from possums will help to ensure a good crop of assorted organic vegies is grown. Salad vegetables will be used in the school canteen. Successful crops of other vegies may be sold to help maintain the garden. “The Rotary club of Lower Blue Mountains is looking forward to meeting the Emu Plains Public School’s environment committee and P&C to discuss the best way forward with this venture,” said Frank Behl (above right), President of the Rotary club. Christine Behl, and Del and Bob Jeal, who were at the meeting, said that they expected the garden to be prepared over winter to be ready for spring planting.

Growing vegies is the best way for children to learn about growing food. With this in mind the Rotary club of Lower Blue Mountains approached Tony Best (pictured left), Principal of Emu Plains Public School to discuss the best way of installing a vegetable garden at the school. The Rotary club will help fund and set up the fully fenced vegie patch, with the aim of encouraging the children at the school to learn more about growing food. This venture will involve Lower Blue Rotarians, Emu Plains Public School staff, students and hopefully the P&C (Parents and Citizens). The Rotary club will provide funding, information and manpower to help create and maintain the garden. The garden will be situated close to water access and storage for the gardening equipment. A water tank may be installed later as part of the project. “Emu Plains Public School has an environment committee consisting of staff and children who take their roles

River Restoration Residents can continue to enjoy the majestic Nepean River’s scenic beauty with Penrith City Council committing funds recently to continue rehabilitating the river bank along River Road at Emu Plains. Penrith City Mayor Jim Aitken OAM said Council committed a further $35,000 this year toward remov-

century residents and visitors to enjoy the pleasure of similar views. “Removing weeds and replacing them with natives keeps the banks from eroding. Great headway has already been made since work started in 2007, but the work needs to be done slowly to ensure the river bank is stable. The work is labour intensive because it is a difficult job to remove weeds such as Privet, Box elder, Camphor laurel and Lantana. This year Penrith City Council is continuing the job and will continue the job until it is finished.”

Rental Assistance for Domestic Violence Victims A new $16 million rental subsidy initiative will help domestic violence victims into private accommodation. The Safe Start Private Rental Subsidy Scheme, which will be offered in Western Sydney, will house around 1,650 women with children in private rental accommodation over the next four years. “After hearing from domestic violence support workers about the need for more women’s services, I am very glad to be able to fund this new initiative in the upcoming Budget,” said Premier Rees. “The NSW Government is committed to strengthening the support and services it offers to domestic violence victims.” Minister for Women Verity Firth said Safe Start is about ensuring women with children who are escaping domestic violence get the support they need to secure and sustain a safe home. “Domestic violence victims can often spend lengthy periods in temporary or crisis accommodation and in the worst cases are forced into homelessness,” Ms Firth said. “Safe Start will help ensure that women and children are not forced are return to violent homes because they have no-where else to go.” Subsidised rents will be available to approved applicants for up to 12 months and they will only have to pay the same amount as other social housing tenants, ensuring their rent is reasonable. Follow-up support, including a six-month review, will be provided to ensure tenants can make the transition from the subsidy at the end of the 12month period. The scheme, to be administered by Housing NSW.

The 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse, recycle! Reduce Reduce the amount you consume and the amount of waste you produce. Here are some handy tips: • Take your own bags or cardboard boxes shopping- even use calico bags and say NO to throw-away plastic bags. It is also handy to keep a few shopping bags or boxes in the car in case you do some unexpected shopping • Buy in bulk. It reduces the amount of packaging you take home and saves you money. • Buy only what you need. Impulse buying may result in buying things you can’t really use, ask yourself “Do I really need this?” • Nowadays there are a multitude of single-use products on the market. Avoid buying disposable products like nappies, razors or tissues- the durable alternatives (cloth nappies, electric razors and handkerchiefs) last longer and are cheaper in the long run • Making homemade is usually cheaper and more satisfying than buying pre-made, pre-packaged items • Buy fresh fruit (and compost the scraps) instead of buying pre-packaged fruit in containers • Buy rechargeable batteries • Take your own mug where drinks may be served in disposable cups (work, conferences, functions) • Send messages via email rather then fax and save paper Reuse Many products have more than one life. Try these easy examples: • Repair items rather than throwing them away • Reuse old materials for handicrafts • Refill a drink bottle • Use a lunchbox

• Reuse plastic bags as bin liners • Make handy garden scoops out of old milk bottles • Use both sides of paper and then recycle • Reuse old cards or old wrapping paper and ribbon for presents • Reuse glass jars for lollies or a vase • Borrow or swap items rather than buying new ones • Give old clothes, toys and furniture to a charity • Hold a garage sale to get rid of unwanted items or use websites such as freecycle or ebay and make some extra money while you’re at it. • Use the back of an envelope for shopping lists Recycle Recycling turns old products into new products- recycling is something we can all do to help conserve our precious material resources. Remember: • Use your kerbside recycling collection to recycle : • newspaper, notepaper, envelopes and magazines • egg cartons • cardboard boxes (flattened) • aluminium cans and steel cans • aerosol (spray) cans • milk & juice cartons • plastic bottles, jars, tubs and containers (milk, soft drink, cordial, detergent & shampoo bottles, and icecream, margarine/ butter, yoghurt and dairy food containers) • glass bottles & jars (green, brown and clear glass) • Feed your fruit and vegetable scraps to a worm farm or compost • Use drop off centres to recycle car batteries, gas bottles, paint tins, building materials, whitegoods and tyres • Excess household recyclables can be dropped off at transfer stations free of charge • Recycle print cartridges at Australia Post or Harvey Norman Stores

Arms of Australia Inn Open Day Sunday, July 19 Should Wilkins sentence include a flogging, he will be taken to the Corps hospital next to the court, to be patched up. Amongst their duties on the day, the Marines will challenge, along with other teams from the district, the winners of last year’s Leg Pull competition. “A great effort is being made to acquaint children with local history with the help of the Marines’ re-enactments, You could describe it as a day of learning and fun,” said Craig Werner, President of the Nepean District Historical Society. There will be a host of activities for children of all ages. Trampoline Bungee Jumping, Thomas the Tank Engine, face painting the ever popular old fashioned school room, games, merry-go-round, animals to cuddle and a jumping castle. There will be plenty of food, music, stalls, and displays of all kinds and plenty of entertainment. The day, which commemorates the day William Cox started the road across the Blue Mountains in 1814, starts at 9.30 am.

Poisoning Spike New figures from the NSW Poisons Information Centre show it received more than 8,000 calls regarding suspected paracetamol overdose last year, half of them in children. Unfortunately, Nepean Hospital holds the dubious distinction of topping the list of calls to the Poisons Centre by hospital staff. The centre received more than 119,000 calls from throughout Australia last year, almost 80,000 from NSW, 50% relating to accidental poisoning in

children – of these 15% were hospitalised. Of most concern is the amount of people, particularly children, who have ingested large doses of over-the-counter medicines. “Most accidental poisonings occur in children younger than five, with children aged between one and three most at risk, in western Sydney,” he said. Some helpful tips: • Store medicines and chemicals out of sight and reach of children, at least 1.5 metres off the ground and in a locked, child-resistant container; • Use medicines and chemicals safely by following given instructions and return them to safe storage immediately after use; • Buy products in child-resistant containers and use child-resistant locks on cupboards or cabinets • Ensure all products are stored in their original containers and are clearly labelled; • Be alert to household poisons outside the home which are stored in the garage or garden shed; and • Take extra care when the household routine changes – when on holiday, moving house, when hosting visitors or during times of family stress. The Poisons Information Centre can be contacted on 13 11 26. For more information go to www.poisonsinfo.nsw.gov.au.

Budget Benefits The community of Emu Plains & Leonay will benefit from investments in major public health facilities, roads and transport, including: • Commonwealth and State funds to develop Nepean Hospital. This will involve construction of a new building to accommodate six new operating theatres, overnight, day only and extended day only beds; an up-

Sad Search At the time of going to print, it appears the search for an elderly man missing from Mt Riverview has ended sadly. About 9:15am on Wednesday June 17, officers from the Blue Mountains Police Rescue Squad, assisted by volunteers from the Rural Fire Service, commenced a search of an area of bushland at Mount Riverview. A short time later, the body of a man was found in a creek near Nicholas Parade. The body has not been formally identified however police believe it to be that of an 88-year-old man suffering dementia who last seen in the vicinity of his home about 6pm on Sunday June 14. The man had attended the Nepean Hospital about 4pm on Sunday with his wife who had fallen ill. About 5pm, he was seen by staff to enter a taxi from the casualty area of the hospital where his wife was admitted. The driver of the taxi confirmed to police that he took the elderly man to Mt Riverview about 6pm and dropped him off about a block from his house. He had not been seen or heard from since. Police held grave concerns for his welfare due to his age, and his medical condition, and freezing weather conditions. An extensive search operation had been conducted in the area and involved police from the Blue Mountains and Penrith Local Area Commands, PolAir, and Rural Fire Service volunteers.

Composting Made Easy By turning your food and garden waste into compost you can make a difference to our environment. Composting reduces the amount of waste you dispose into land fill as well as creating a natural fertiliser which is great

for improving soil quality. And best of all it’s easy to do! 1. Choose the Site The ideal location for compost has good drainage and is well shaded. 2. What to compost? Compost is a mix of different materials: - Nitrogen rich kitchen organics such as fruit and vegetable peelings, green garden organics such as fresh grass clippings, green leaves and weeds and manure. - Nitrogen poor brown garden organics such as dry leaves, woody twigs, paper and straw. 3. Layering To build the compost, start with a thick layer (15cm) of twigs or coarse mulch at the base for drainage. Then follow the easy A, B, C formula to build a heap layer upon layer. A. Thin layer of kitchen organics and green garden organics. B. Cover with a layer of brown garden organics ensuring no food waste is left exposed. C. Moisten well. Then repeat steps A, B & C 4. Maintaining your compost It is important to add air to the compost so it doesn’t smell. This can be done by regularly turning it with a garden fork or by placing garden stakes or pipes through the heap to allow air in. Common Compost Problems Composting is like baking a cake – sometimes the recipe doesn’t work or the cake won’t rise! However, composting is a natural process so it doesn’t take much to work out the problem and to fix it. Some common problems and solutions are listed below. • Smelly Compost Your compost will start to smell if it gets too wet or if there is not enough air in the heap. Fix It! Add dry leaves or garden mulch and turn the compost to get more air

through the heap. Garden lime, dolomite or woodfire ash will also help to eliminate the smell. Ensure there are sticks to create a ‘floor’ to ensure good drainage • Slow maturing compost Your compost doesn’t break down quick enough to keep up with your needs. Fix It! Adding nitrogen-rich material, such as kitchen organics and green garden organics can speed up the composting process. Turn the heap often and make sure your compost is moist. • Unwelcome Visitors Ants, cockroaches, mice or rats can sometimes find there way into your compost and make it their home. Fix It! Always ensure the food heap is covered with a layer of green organics – then cover the heap with hessian. Turning the heap regularly discourages the ants and cockroaches and placing fine wire under the compost bin will help keep out mice and rats. HINT: Avoid placing meat or dairy products in your compost. HINT: Adding some soil into your compost heap will introduce the microorganisms that break down food waste and help minimize odours.
