Lions Tradition Continues
Article Written + Submitted by: Roger Cunningham | Senior Minister | P: 4735 1001 E: roger@epac.org.au W: www.epac.org.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm | Plus activities for adults and young people throughout the week
The Best Gift at Christmas What’s the best gift you’ve ever received at Christmas? I can think of lots of good ones, like a train set when I was a kid, or tickets to a show, and my wife Louise always comes up with great gifts (and I’m not just saying that because she’ll see this!). And aren’t the best gifts always the unexpected and undeserved? If you’ve ever heard someone talk about the ‘grace of God’ you might be surprised to hear it means the ‘gift of God’. Grace means gift. And at Christmas as we give gifts, no matter how good they are, we’re reminded again of the best gift. Paul in the Bible puts it like this, ‘You know the gift of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.’ (2 Corinthians 8:9). And so, at Christmas we remember Jesus’ coming, so he could give us this gift. While he was God himself, in all his awesome power and holiness, he came into the world, came as a man, into the mire of people living as if God weren’t God. He set aside the riches of his glory and took on the poverty of our ungodliness. He came to live, and die, so we could live and become children of God. That is an extraordinary gift, isn’t it? It was unexpected by most and deserved by none. If we had deserved it, well it wouldn’t be a gift! This is the gift we remember at Christmas, God meeting our greatest need. All that is left to do is decide whether we’ll accept it, whether we’ll trust the one who gives it. I hope you will. Merry Christmas!
The Lions Club of Emu Plains are once again having a ‘real’ Christmas tree sale, on Saturday 5th December, at Lions Park, Great Western Highway in Emu Plains. The trees are sourced from Oberon and Lions will be selling them at an unchanged price of $40 per tree, which according to Lions Coordinator, John Choma is “great value”. The estimated drop-off time for the trees is between 6:30am and 7:00am and there will be approx. 80 trees available. This year the Club will have a COVID-19 plan, so you will need to queue and wait for your turn in selecting your tree. The Lions Club therefore recommends that you get in early to ensure you get the best tree for your requirements. From the proceeds of the Christmas tree sale, the Lions Club will make a donation to Ronald McDonald House at Nepean Hospital. There may also be a limited supply of Christmas cakes and puddings, if they are not sold out prior. r Friend of Lions, Carol Kitley displays a tree | Image: Lions Club of Emu Plains
Lions Christmas Cakes Are Here! The Lions Club of Emu Plains are selling Lions Christmas cakes and puddings again this festive season and have been swamped by orders, including support from corporates like Bespoke Realty Group and The Royce. The sales of cakes and puddings enables the Lions Club to provide donations to local charities. Lions will be at Lennox Village on Saturday 5th December and at the ‘real’ Christmas tree sale on the same day at Lions Park, Great Western Highway in Emu Plains. The 1kg cakes and 0.9kg puddings are priced at $13 each, with the 1.5kg cake exceptional value at $17. There are also 8gm ‘mini-cakes’ available for $2. The 1kg cakes are also available at Clean Cut Family Meat Butchers and the mini-cakes from the Nourishmint Café at Lennox Village. Lions also take orders and then you can pick-up on the above dates at the stated location. If you wish to make sure your selection is available, please pre-order by contacting Cheryl Devine on 0417 234295 or Jim Devine on 0427 110 061 or via email at jimdevine@bigpond.com.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has announced that the NSW Government will provide $1.8 million in grants to assist Penrith City Council deliver vital infrastructure improvements to boost safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians taking trips between Emu Plains and the Blue Mountains. Stuart Ayres said the grant would help Penrith City Council deliver a new 1.2 kilometre off-road shared path along the northern side of the Great Western Highway at Emu Plains from the corner of Brougham Street to the Knapsack Viaduct at Mitchells Pass. “This project will provide safer and more convenient connections for pedestrian and cyclists to key hubs like Penrith City Centre, The River Walk, Emu Plains and onto the Blue Mountains at Glenbrook” Stuart Ayres said. “We know there is a strong demand for active transport options in this area, and these improvements will no doubt encourage more people, be it families, recreational users or daily commuters to leave the car at home in favour of walking or cycling”. Minister for Transport and Roads, Andrew Constance said this project is part of an investment of around $710 million in walking and cycling infrastructure over the next four years that will bring the NSW Government’s total investment to almost $1.1 billion – the largest in the State’s history. “The NSW Government continues to encourage people to walk and cycle as part of their everyday commute, promoting an active and healthy lifestyle while also helping to relieve congestion on the roads and public transport” he said. Further information about this project will be available from Penrith City Council as work progresses. r

Expressions Of Interest Sought For New Public Artwork In Regatta Park
Pty. Ltd.
Emu Plains JRLFC’s Matilda Vella has had a once in a lifetime experience, interviewing St George Illawarra Dragon’s NRLW star Jessica Sergis, as part of the Cadbury Get In The Game Women In Sport promotion. The national advertising campaign is featured online, supporting the next generation of women in sport. The first instalment of a four-part series features Matilda and Jessica and was also aired at the NRLW Grand Final at ANZ Stadium in Homebush recently. “It was a great opportunity to meet and train with one of the top NRLW players in the country, especially getting to know Jessica and finding out what it takes to be an athlete at her level” said Matilda to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. Matilda auditioned for the part, before being chosen shortly before filming. The busy schedule involved eight hours of shooting, where she met Jessica at Kogarah Juniors fields to have a training run together, before moving onto Jubilee Stadium. It was there that Matilda interviewed Jessica, allowing her the opportunity to find out why she inspires so many women in sport. “It’s important for girls to have role models in sport to look up to, especially with women being unrepresented in professional league for so long. As mentioned by Cadbury, we want to inspire the next generation of women in sport and show all girls that no matter who you are, you can push past barriers and get in the game” said Joanne Vella, Matilda’s mother and Emu Plains JRLFC Registrar. Matilda’s club, Emu Plains JRLFC are committed to the growth and development of girl’s rugby league. They hope to continue their success of 2020 into next season and beyond. “We are excited by the new exposure that the Penrith Junior Rugby League have planned for the 2021 competition. Girls from as young as 4 can play rugby league and Emu Plains JRLFC is keen to fill teams in all age groups next season, from the Under 6’s to the Open Women’s” ended Joanne. r Matilda with NRLW star Jessica Sergis | Image: Joanne Vella
Penrith City Council is calling for artists to submit their Expressions of Interest to design and create an iconic public art piece for the new Regatta Park recreational precinct. This is an exciting opportunity for an artist to be part of a city-shaping project for Penrith and to create a public artwork that engages, inspires, and welcomes visitors to the Nepean River for generations to come. The commissioned artwork will be a key feature of the new Regatta Park precinct that celebrates the rich history and significance of the location and reinforce the intergenerational connection between the river and the local community. Talented artists are invited to detail their experience in delivering public artworks and their ability to develop durable and robust artworks in Stage One of the Expression of Interest period, which is open for four weeks until 16 December 2020. Three shortlisted artists will be selected from Stage One and each will be awarded $1,500 to develop and present their concept design proposal and outline how the Artist will engage with the community. The successful artist will be announced in February 2021 and receive $125,000 for all associated costs to complete the artwork including the fabrication, delivery, and installation. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM said this is a major opportunity for an artist to create a timeless piece of art for one of the most beautiful locations in Penrith. “The Nepean River is our region’s most loved natural asset and an iconic public art piece within the new Regatta Park precinct will create even more opportunities for locals and visitors to experience and enjoy this very special part of Penrith,” Cr McKeown said. Minister for Western Sydney, Stuart Ayres said the completed Regatta Park would be an asset for Penrith. “The Regatta Park upgrade is a fantastic outcome of the City Deal and I look forward to this piece of public art adding to what will be one of Penrith’s must visit destinations,” Mr Ayres said. A Public Art Review Panel will be established to oversee the artist selection process. The Regatta Park upgrade is being jointly funded by Australian and NSW Governments through the Western Parkland City Liveability Program, and Penrith City Council. A detailed brief about the project is available to view or download from Council’s website penrith.city/regattapark and from the yoursaypenrith.com.au/regatta-park. Christmas calls Connection
for
Joy
and
Have you finished your Christmas shopping? Haven’t started? Got a few bits and pieces? A Dad said to me recently that he was getting so stressed about Christmas. He’s a single Dad raising three boys and he can’t afford much. I asked him what his stress was achieving and he said that he wasn’t getting much joy from life. I asked what his kids really needed, and he replied “a Dad that’s not stressed and that is there for them”. Kids need a parent that is present to their needs every day, not a parent that has a sack load of presents on Christmas Day. Sometimes parents think that buying expensive “educational” toys make their children do better academically. Children don’t need stuff, they need you. Research has shown that children learn more in social interaction with caring, interested, and more knowledgeable others. The more that parents talk with (not talk at) their children the better they do socially, emotionally, and academically. So your child will learn more from sitting down with you with a world atlas poster that cost you $1, and exploring and chatting about what you both see and know, than she will from the electronic world globe toy that cost you 120 bucks. Those plastic toys will cause more mess and stress, and will sooner or later end up in landfill, but the gift of your time and energy with your children will last a lifetime. I’ve seen this little poem doing the rounds. It is such a simple, lovely thing… • “Something they want • Something they need • Something to wear, and • Something to read.” The “something they need” could be a bit tricky. They might think they need the latest electronic thing-a-ma-jig. Or you may think you need to give it to them to prove your love for them. Ask yourself if the “gift” is going to create connection or disconnection? So many parents I speak to regret purchasing the electronic thing that has caused their child to become more isolated and withdrawn and then had the battle over having to place limits on it. Wishing you much joy and connection this holiday season. r

POLICE NEWS
Second Man Charged with Murder Following Investigation into Fatal Stabbing at Emu Plains Homicide Squad detectives have charged a second man with murder as inquiries continue into the fatal stabbing of another man in Sydney’s west earlier this year. About 8am on Thursday 24 September 2020, emergency services were called to a reserve on Russell Street at Emu Plains, after the body of a man had been located. He has since been formally identified as a 22-year-old Minchinbury man. A vehicle found crashed nearby was seized for forensic examination. Detectives from Nepean Police Area Command and the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad established Strike Force Mathinna to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. So far during the investigation, three men – aged 21, 22 and 26 – were arrested. They were all charged over their alleged roles in the incident and remain before the courts. As inquiries continue, a 25-year-old man attended Mt Druitt Police Station about 7pm Thursday 12 November 2020. He was arrested and charged with murder. The man was refused bail to appear at Mt Druitt Local Court Friday 13 November 2020. Investigations under Strike Force Mathinna are continuing.
Students to Get Extra Support Due to Remote Learning Disruptions This year has certainly been an interesting year for education across the globe. Here in Australia, the impact of COVID-19 has varied from state to state, with the full extent of impact not yet being realised. Last month, the NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, announced a plan to implement additional support within schools by offering the COVID Intensive Learning Support Program for students who have fallen behind due to remote learning. The NSW Department of Education will assist schools to identify students requiring this support and employ a selection of teachers to execute the program, which is set to be culminating in the form of intensive small group instruction within the school setting. The teachers will be selected from submitted expressions of interest and encompass a range of educational backgrounds and current work statuses; including casual teachers who were impacted by a lack of work during remote learning. Minister for Education, Sarah Mitchell explained, “We know that learning for many students stagnated during the pandemic and tuition in small groups will help re-engage students in their schooling”. Whilst it is encouraging that the far-reaching impact of remote learning practices on vulnerable children is recognised, it will be interesting to see how equitable this program is in its availability to those who need it the most and how that will inevitably be determined. Either way, any support and additional funding for the education system in order to support the learning of our future generations is a welcome announcement. The scheme is set to be available to all school sectors and commence in Term 1, 2021. v The NSW government plans to ensure all students are back on track after the learning disruptions this year | Image: www.pexels.com. Santa to Lend a Hand to Firies After a tough year for us all, planning is well and truly underway for the Annual Santa Run, through the streets of Emu Plains, Emu Heights and Leonay. Regentville Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) hope to be joined by the man in the big red suit, where they will be spreading some Christmas cheer to residents this month. Last year saw changes to dates and times of the Santa Run with the level of fire activity around the state. 2020 has seen many community events cancelled due to the pandemic. With COVID-19 still looming, it may change, however it is hoped that Santa’s visit on the fire truck will be safe for all. Each year, Santa calls upon the members from Regentville RFB to escort him around the local communities so he can check up on who’s been naughty and who’s been nice. He likes to walk around side by side with members playing his ‘little helpers’ with the fire truck in tow playing Christmas carols, flashing its lights and handing out lollies and other little goods, even for the family pet! “What we enjoy most about taking part in the Santa Run is being able to see the joy of both the young and the old when they realise the jolly man in a red suit is walking down their street. It is great to be able to talk to residents out of a time that would typically need the fire brigade in their attendance. Being able to have ‘normal’ conversations as well as providing tips on how they can better prepare their homes for the coming fire season and ensuring they have a Bush Fire Survival Plan is important” said Jordan Jobson of Regentville RFB. For more information on where and when the Santa Run will take place, be sure to head over to their Facebook page, NSW RFS – Regentville Brigade. Their brigade trains on Tuesday nights from 7pm and Saturdays from Midday and you can contact them on (02) 4733 1190. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with the NSW Rural Fire Service, you can also visit during these times at 20 Jeanette St, Regentville. r Feature Article: [Cover] Harrison heads on down to Regentville RFB to make sure Santa has him on the nice list [Above] Local MP Melissa McIntosh gets a family photo with Santa last year at Regentville RFB | Images Supplied by Regentville RFB

Soaking & Sprouting – Increases Zinc Availability For Strong Knee Cartilage Soaking and sprouting are two very simple methods that can help you to remove a considerable portion of the antinutrients in foods. Both can significantly improve a food’s nutrient value for humans. These two simple steps are left out of food production processes and at-home cooking procedures. So, food-zinc remains unavailable for strong knee cartilage. Soaking grains, beans, nuts & seeds (seeds from now-on) ‘before cooking is recommended by scientists. Soaking simply means covering the seeds with cold water in a bowl, soaking 1218 hours. The process is simple, the benefits significant. Soaking pigeon-peas, for 6-18 hours reduces lectins by 38-50%, tannins by 13-25% and protease inhibitors by 28-30%. Discarding soaking water before cooking furth reduces antinutrients, with loss of some polyphenol antioxidants. If seeds are then cooked antinutrient contents reduce further. Studies show ‘soaking for 12h’ then ‘boiling for 80min’ is most effective for antinutrient removal and toxicants. Sprouting takes only slightly more time. Start off by soaking seeds as above, them discard soak-water, and rinse seeds thoroughly with clean water. Spin-off residual water and allow seeds to sit (dry, out of direct sunlight) in a bowl for a further 12 hours. Depending on the type of seed this ‘sitting-rinsing’ process is repeated 2-4 times, & sprouts develop. Sprouting reduces phytate by 37-81%; trypsin inhibitor significantly; lectins by 96%; increases vitamin C, B2, B3, and available protein; and dramatically increases protein digestibility. Sprouting also degrades galacto-oligosaccharides in seeds.
Galacto-oligosaccharides cannot be digested by humans and so pass undigested into the large intestine where they are broken down by our gut bacteria. Thus galacto-oligosaccharides in small amounts are prebiotics with health benefits, but above 20g/day they are the ingredient in legumes that can cause intestinal gas, bloating, stomach-cramps, and diarrhoea. Fermentation is an even better method for removing antinutrient factors from seeds. Antinutrient content of fermented seed flour is very low compared with germinated and roasted seed flour. Soaking/Sprouting and fermentation can be combined, together with cooking for an additive reduction in antinutrient content and an increase in nutrient availability of foods processed this way. We’ll look at fermentation next edition.

PAWS A WHILE
Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 49 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027
Santa Photos With Your Pets Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2020 to take photos with your pets. Santa will be here from Tuesday 1st December until Thursday 24th December 2020, Mon-Fri (9am-5pm) and on Saturdays (9am2pm). Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Santa will be wearing a mask underneath his beard. We usually have a staff member taking the photograph of your pet with Santa, however to minimize the number of people in the room, we will require you to take your own photograph using your phone/camera, or with our camera where we can print off the photo for you. Only 1 client per pet will be allowed in the room at one time. Santa will be photographed with pets only. For a $10 cash donation, your Santa photo is presented in a Christmas card, with all proceeds donated to the Guide Dogs NSW. We have Christmas themed props for your pet’s photos (e.g. hats and scarves), feel free to bring in your own outfits. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information check out our Facebook, website www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027.

We made it! We're on the cusp of Christmas. This year it's about 'virtual carols' and 'set times' with Santa, capped dining limits for Christmas lunch and 'Zoom' replacing interstate travel. While it is clearly apparent that Christmas will be 'different' this year, it's still very much worthy of celebrating. We're celebrating the joy of spending time, be it physical or virtual, with friends, family and loved ones. Making magic of moments that become forever embedded in our memories. This year be thankful and grateful for what we have, rather than what we don't or should. Find the magic. The team here at the District Gazette are grateful for the support of both our readers and local business advertisers - without you the challenges of 2020 would have been amplified. From our family to yours, we wish you a safe and happy Christmas with better blessings in 2021. I'll end it this year with this.....'In a world where you can be anything, be kind' Enjoy Your Community News.
