Diamond Anniversary

Celebrations

On the 26th May 2013, Karl and Lisa Preuss of Emu Plains celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary with family and friends at the Bohemian Euro Restaurant in Narellan and enjoyed a magnificent feast of delicious Germanstyle food. It was a marvellous celebration complete with beautiful decorations of flowers and balloons, reminiscent music playing in the background, and a wonderful photo slide-show honouring their lives together (leaving not a dry eye in the room.) Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres MP met with Elisabeth and Karl to congratulate them. “I extend my warmest congratulations and best wishes to Mr & Mrs Preuss. This is a very special occasion that will mean so much to them, their family and friends. I hope their day is filled with wonderful memories of their lives together. I wish them both good health and happiness for the future,” said Mr Ayres. Continued on Pg 7...

Walking with Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth It is difficult to describe the feeling of walking in the footsteps of Gregory Blaxland, Lt. William Lawson and William Charles Wentworth, who succeeded 200 years ago in crossing the Blue Mountains, undoubtedly the most productive of all Australian exploration. I wasn’t exactly walking with Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth, but with their descendants as part of a replica party dressed in period costumes. There was Gregory Blaxland Roberts of Scotland Island whose great-great grandfather was the leading explorer in 1813; Robert Bettington of Bullaburra whose greatgreat-great-great grandfather was William Lawson; and Charles Willis whose great-great-great grandfather was W C Wentworth. The original party also had three trusty convicts, a rifleman, four pack horses and five big dogs. In our re-enacting party, one of the convicts was Malcolm Brown, former Sydney Morning Herald journalist, who in January walked from Martin Place to Dubbo to raise funds for a charity. The re-enactment party had travelled from the site of Gregory Blaxland’s 1813 property near St Marys on Saturday 11th May

and reached Mt Blaxland beyond Little Hartley on Friday 31st May 2013. On the second last day, I was privileged to join the party. As we walked through trees and grassland with views of Mt Blaxland in the distance, beside us were faint traces of the road built in 1815 by William Cox. The experience was surreal and awesome. It was a very special thing for each of us to be able to take part in this great historic event. Congratulations to Springwood resident and Springwood Rotary Club member, John O’Sullivan, who conceived, planned and guided the event from his original dream to its completion. Power, Pride and the Federal Election A common misconception of the Old Testament is that it is irrelevant to 2013. But if you take a read through the book of Daniel, you quickly find that it’s all about power and pride – and that pretty much sums up western democratic politics in 2013 as much as it describes Babylon in the 6th century BC. Here is a message for Julia Gillard, Kevin Rudd, Tony Abbott, and the hundreds of others seeking election because they hunger for power, influence and control. Not just for them of course, Daniel 4 speaks to all of us who periodically think we are our own centres of reality! The key verse for an election year in Daniel 4 is 17b: “…the Most High is sovereign over the kingdoms of men and gives them to anyone he wishes and sets over them the lowliest of men”. It’s actually repeated twice more in v25 and v32 – so we know it’s important! I’m not making any personal judgement on any of our Federal politicians – I don’t them well enough to make a call on the level of any pride or arrogance. But the fact is, our system of government encourages those attitudes in our leaders. Of course, Australians are very good at cutting down public figures who overtly demonstrate their pride or arrogance, but it seems to me that in doing so, we run the risk of thinking that WE are immune to the same sin. No question that ideally our leaders would acknowledge their rightful place under God, and humbly submit to his rule, demonstrating that in the way they lead and establish policies. However, that is also true for us in our lives: It is very easy for Christians to slowly loose the sense of God’s sovereignty in their lives, replacing it with desires and actions that clearly point to us wanting to be in control of our lives. So by all means, let’s demand high standards of our politicians at the election this year. But let’s also avoid hypocrisy and make sure that in our own lives we, in word and deed, “acknowledge that Heaven rules” (Daniel 4:26) Rev. Neil

MONEY MATTER$ With Alex McKenzie – Future Financial Services Ph: 0414 330 651 E: info@futurefinancialservices.com.au

Understanding Superannuation, It IS real money! Superannuation is a very misunderstood and often neglected part of our wealth, people don’t pay much attention to their Superannuation until they approach retirement and don’t view it as part of their overall wealth. A recent study indicated that 2/3’s of Australian’s could not accurately state how much money they had in super, about half did not know the name of all the funds in which they had super invested and more than half also had money invested in more than 1 fund without a strategic reason, and only about 10% could give an accurate description of what underlying assets in which they were invested I believe there are 2 main reasons for this neglect, firstly as we cannot access these funds, it becomes a low priority and secondly many don’t understand super and place the whole concept in the too hard basket. The first misconception with Super is that it is a type of investment, I often hear people make comments like “I don’t trust super and don’t want to lose my money” or ”you can make more money with property than Super”. Superannuation is not an investment it is a Tax Structure, in fact within Superannuation you can invest in direct property, shares, managed funds, term deposits and even artworks. The government would like people to save for their retirement and as such have created a tax structure which has mandated savings (9% of our salary) that is treated differently to all other investments. The money invested in these funds is taxed concessionally upon investing the funds, we only pay 15% on those monies invested, instead of our marginal tax rate which can be as high as 46.5%, and the return on investment is also only taxed at 15% for income and 10% for capital gains. Again lower than most of our marginal tax rates. People that are worried about losing their money in super are most likely invested too aggressively, this is all the more reason to address your super and have a financial advisor sit down and establish an investment strategy suitable to you, there are options well suited to the ultra-conservative right through to the aggressive risk taking investors, it is important that you are invested appropriately. Eventually your Superannuation becomes your income replacement. When you no longer work for income, you’ll need to replace this income using your assets. It is important to realise this and start to work towards building enough assets to generate income in retirement. We recommend that you start setting some goals and work towards achieving them, constantly ensuring you are on track. Superannuation is real money, and it is your money that will be extremely important for you later in life, it is definitely in your best interests to start treating your superannuation like all other assets, which means locating all your funds and keep track of them, investing in line with your goals, making sure you are paying reasonable fees and having a clear goal of the end result. If you need assistance in getting your superannuation under control please feel free to contact us at http://futurefinancialservices.com.au

Facebook Page Stirs Up Old Memories Graham Chapman, who grew up in Llandilo, had no idea the impact his Facebook page was going to have on the greater Penrith Region community when he launched the page. It became the fastest growing Facebook page in Penrith. The page was launched on May 21 and had 10,000 followers in the first week. The page is not only there to attract attention from locals but allows you to take a walk down memory lane. People are reliving places such as the old mud baths, swimming in the weir, the pulley system at Warragamba Dam and the floods from the past. Old friendships are being rekindled and many are finding those they had lost contact with through the site. Mr Chapman has also started Memories of Blue Mountains. “Like” the page at facebook.com/memoriesofpenrith

We love Our River Outdoor cinema, a dedicated river keeper, cafes, restaurants and more spots to launch kayaks and small boats were just some of the ideas flowing during community consultation on the future of public open space land on the banks of the Nepean River. Council is currently talking with residents and river users as part of the ‘Our River’ Project, which will develop a detailed Masterplan to help make the right decisions for the future. “The Nepean River is Penrith’s best asset. We’re really keen to talk to people and find out what they love and what they’d like to see improved,” Penrith Mayor Mark Davies said. “Guided by a long term masterplan, we can ensure the area is a great experience now and into the future for people who visit the river daily, weekly or just every now and then.” “We’re really excited by the enthusiasm and passion people have for the river area. Some of the suggestions came through at two workshops that were held, others through an online survey and meetings and overall, people are very positive that a comprehensive plan is being developed,” Cr Davies said. Feedback has been grouped into five themes: Access, Managing the River, Cultural and Social, Healthy River and Recreation and Leisure. “Access to the river bank area by pedestrians as well as the water are two important elements. Appointing a river keeper so that a single entity has management of the river was another suggestion. In terms of river health, balancing the weeds in the water and on shore and the bank stability were key issues for concern,” Cr Davies said. “Activating and celebrating Our River and the social and cultural elements created a lot of discussion and ideas to ensure we make the most of the beautiful natural resource that’s already there. Putting up artworks and looking at holding outdoor theatre or cinema were enthusiastically embraced. “Ensuring there continues to be opportunities for picnics and fitness is also important to the community members we’ve heard from. I also get a lot of feedback from people asking for restaurants and cafes down there. Maintaining the amenity of neighbouring residents while promoting access to the river area is also very important,” Cr Davies said. For more information go to penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/OurRiver

Happy 60th Anniversary ... continued from Pg 1.

Goal Posts For Lapstone Oval Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres met with Blue Mountains City Council Mayor, Daniel Myles, to congratulate them on their successful grant of $16,962 for work at Lapstone Oval. “The project for Lapstone Oval includes sporting grounds, goal posts and fencing after BMCC put in a successful application to the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program”, said Mr Ayres. “The project will benefit users of Blue Mountains sporting grounds by providing alternative training areas to reduce wear and poor field conditions in high wear areas and sporting groups will benefit by the installation of goal posts and a fence at Lapstone Oval, the fence will hopefully prevent balls from entering surrounding bushland”, Mr Ayres said. Lapstone Oval is a sports stadium that supports sport all year round, with rugby union fields, netball and tennis courts and a cricket pitch.

The happy couple also received certificates from the Mayor of Penrith City, Mark Davies, the Premier of NSW, Barry O’Farrell and the Governor General of Australia, Ms Quentin Bryce. At the celebration they received 3 more Congratulations certificates from David Bradbury, The Prime Minister, and a Congratulatory message from Her Majesty the Queen! The Preuss’ migrated to Australia in 1954. Originally residing in Orange, the couple then moved to Emu Plains in 1956. They built the Ponderosa Fruit Market on the Bringelly Rd (now called the Northern Road), and managed it for 15 years, before moving on to the Strawberry Farm in Cambridge Park. Then in 1990 they bought a Caravan Hiring Company. They have worked hard over the years, but found time for sports. Karl still playsCompetition Table Tennis and Lisa has played Competition Bowls for many years. Elisabeth and Karl have 3 children, 9 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Their family are very proud them. 60 years is a long time to be together. “ “I am proud to have recommended this project for funding to the state government and appreciate the opportunity to make a contribution to decisions about state government investments in our area”, said Mr Ayres. “I would like to thank Stuart Ayres for his continued support of the lower mountains community. I have no doubt these important upgrades to Lapstone oval will benefit the many sporting and community organisations who use this facility.” Said Mr Myles. “I will continue to work with BMCC other local organisations to find ways to assist them in their capacity to support our community, “said Mr Ayres. “The Community Building Partnerships provide an excellent way for organisations to work with their local MPs to identify priorities for our community”, said Mr Ayres.

Puppy PreSchool

Puppies have a period of socialisation up to the age of 4 months old, during which time we encourage you to expose your puppy to as many new experiences as possible. But you must also protect them from exposure to disease. Puppy pre school is an excellent and safe way to provide this social contact for your puppy. The aims of puppy pre school are: • To socialise puppies with other dogs and people. • To start basic obedience training. • To identify any potential behavioural problems early, so that measures can be introduced to modify that behaviour. • To educate owners on all aspects of puppy development, training and pet care. • To help make veterinary visits more enjoyable for dogs, owners and veterinary staff. • To get puppies off to a good start so they become well controlled, well behaved and socially acceptable adults. • To teach good manners to your puppy, so that you and your pet live happily ever after. We also offer a free puppy consultation with the veterinarian. Puppy pre school is run weekly at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, starting the first week of every month. Classes run once a week for 4 weeks, last approximately 1 hour each class and start at 7pm. Please call to book your puppy into the next Puppy Preschool Class. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment.

Lewers Learning Centre The Gallery has a dynamic changing exhibition program and this year we have a designated gallery space targeting the interests and needs of young audiences - The Lewers Learning Centre. Lewers Learning Centre is a new initiative of the Gallery, producing themed exhibitions across the year with a focus on family based educational outcomes for children between 3 – 12 years of age. Story in Lewers Learning Centre
25 May – 15 September
From the earliest days of cave painting, visual images have been an important, magical element in the tradition of storytelling. The Story exhibition will explore how a maverick group of contemporary artists use art materials and surprising objects in whimsical and ingenious ways to create theatrical scenes, quirky characters and artwork loaded with narrative potential. Each of the doorways into the four rooms of Lewers Learning Centre will be the threshold into an adventure of a different kind and each room will have a hands-on interactive element that invites visitors to continue the story. Story features the work of Shaun Tan, Kate Mitchell, Alasdair Macintyre, Kendal Murray, Naomi Ullman, Hendrik Gericke, Catherine O’Donnell and Myluyn Nguyen.

 • The Writer’s Room – is the engine room of storytelling and offers visitors a call to adventure, through reading works of fiction, writing at the special writer’s desk or lounging on the day bed to dream up a question to pose to the Water Buffalo, the work of celebrated artist and author Shaun Tan. • The Hero’s Adventure Room – contains Alasdair Macintyre’s work, which adopts Star Wars characters and famous scenarios from art history to create fascinating scenes of action and rest, where the Star Wars Empire brand is both guiding light and warning beacon. The Hero’s Adventure Room mural created by artist and illustrator Hendrik Gericke compliments the epic theme of good versus evil in a parallel world. This room has a Lego

interactive and storyteller’s journals for audience participation • The Small Worlds Room – contains the work of Kendal Murray – tiny scenes made inside purses, compacts and teapots; Naomi Ullmann – McMansions made from credit cards and housed in snow domes; and Mylyn Nguyen – tiny narrative scenes, inspired by an imaginary childhood friend and made using watercolour, paper and found objects. The Small World’s Room has a mural created by artist Catherine O’Donnell and visitors are invited to add tiny characters to the journey along the staircase that leads to the door way to yet another world. • The Quest Room – video and performance artist Kate Mitchell makes sets inspired by cartoon scenarios from the 1980s and then enters into the quest by committing to an endurance performance in the newly created setting. This room has a cardboard diorama activity. See www.lewerslearningcentre.com.au for more details.

PARENTS’ CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

There are two base emotions – fear and love. How do fear and love play out in your parenting? Fear-based parenting views the child as bad, annoying, or timeconsuming. Love-based parenting views your child as worthy of your love, time, and attention. Fear-based parenting views the child as “manipulative and attention seeking”. Love-based parenting recognises that all behaviour arises from a need (physical, emotional, intellectual), and sometimes behaviour is a way of attempting to make a connection with the parent. Fear-based parenting emphasises the need for discipline and punishment. Love-based parenting emphasises the need for guidance, education, and relationship. Fear-based parenting seeks revenge or payback for a child’s behaviour. Love-based parenting seeks belonging and connection for the child. Fear-based parenting notices “bad” behaviour. Love-based parenting notices mistaken behaviour (Dan Gartrell). When we move from fear-based parenting to love-based parenting we move from ME (parent’s agenda) to WE (parent and child together). It is no longer us versus them. In fear-based parenting the parent reacts. In love-based parenting the parent responds. In times of high emotion, the parent remembers to Stop-Breathe-Think-then Do. In fear-based parenting the child’s feelings are dismissed. In lovebased parenting the child’s feelings are acknowledged. In fear-based parenting, the parent persuades, nags, begs, yells, and hits. In love-based parenting, the parent employs the “no talking, no emotion” strategy in dealing with mistaken behaviour (Dr Thomas Phelan). Fear-based parenting focuses on the person doing the wrong thing. Love-based parenting focuses on the behaviour. Through fear-based parenting, the child experiences shame, which can last a lifetime. Through love-based parenting, the child experiences guilt, which is short-term (Dr Daniel A Hughes). In fearbased parenting, the parent feels shame, blame, and guilt. In lovebased parenting, the parent tries to be real (Scott Noelle http://www. enjoyparenting.com/daily-groove/be-real). In fear-based parenting, the parent burdens the child with his or her own feelings, demands an insincere apology, and does not apologise for his or her own inappropriate behaviour. In love-based parenting, the parent talks about OK/not OK for self and child, seeks relationship repair, admits wrongdoing, and role models saying sorry. Fear-based parenting values the child for what he or she does. Love-based parenting values the child for who she or he is. In fear-based parenting, the parent is operating at a head level. In love-based parenting, the parent is operating from a heart level. “How do your words fall on your child’s heart?” (Lisa Nichols).

NSW Government Acts To Protect Children In Child Care Facilities Member for Mulgoa Mrs Tanya Davies MP has welcomed the announcement by Health Minister Jillian Skinner that unvaccinated children will face exclusion from child care facilities under new laws to be introduced by the NSW Government. “As a parent of a young child myself, I am acutely aware and passionate about the need to protect our children in places where they assemble, whether they be in public or privately run facilities.” Mrs Davies said. Child care providers such as Kellyanne Gianatti, who operates Adventure Preschool in Regentville, have long been concerned that they are powerless to prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as whooping cough, measles, and chicken pox within their child care facilities until a child displays symptoms. Often this is too late, as the critical period for spreading these types of diseases would have already passed. “These new laws will not just protect the children in our preschool but will also protect our staff, who are in regular contact with the children.” Kelly said. With the introduction of these new Government laws child care providers can legally deny enrolment to children whose parents or guardians cannot show proof of vaccination against preventable infectious diseases or provide an approved exemption. Mrs Davies said these amendments will force parents and guardians of unvaccinated children to take action – either to vaccinate their child or to show why they should be exempt.

“There is nothing to fear from vaccination but there is much to fear if your child contracts a preventable infectious disease. I encourage all parents and guardians to make vaccination a priority for their families.” Mrs Davies said. The bill would amend the Public Health Act 2010 to: a) Require parents or guardians to provide evidence their child is fully vaccinated for age, or is on a recognised catchup schedule, or has an exemption approved by a GP. Those seeking exemptions will be required to fill in forms used by the Commonwealth, which must be completed by a GP (or other approved provider) after counselling. Valid exemptions may include a medical contraindication to vaccination or religious grounds. Children who do not have proof of vaccination or an approved exemption will be denied enrolment. b) Require directors of childcare facilities to obtain vaccination evidence or exemption prior to enrolment. NSW Health will work with Department of Education and Communities to ensure child care facilities are aware of the new requirements. Failure to comply will be an offence subject to a fine. “This significantly tightens the rules around child immunisation – it means those parents who have been reluctant to vaccinate will need to consult a GP about their decision and be aware of the health risks,” Mrs Skinner said. The NSW Government tabled the legislation in NSW Parliament on 29 May 13. The legislation will take effect from January 1, 2014. For more information, go to: http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/ immunisation/Pages/vaccination_enrolment.aspx

The winter months can mean a spike in electricity bills as heaters come out of hibernation and lights are switched on earlier. But there are a few things householders can do to reduce the winter increase without sacrificing comfort. “Now is the ideal time to start thinking how you can reduce your winter energy bills,” Penrith Mayor Mark Davies said. “Tips include replacing light fittings with energy efficient light bulbs, using door snakes and draught-proof strips on doors and plugging appliances into a stand-by saver powerboard.” “Eligible households in our City can also take part in the Home Power Savings Program and learn how to reduce energy use and save money.” For more information go to ... www.savepower.nsw.gov.au/freehelp or call 1300 662 416.
