FAITH - EMU PLAINS ANGLICAN Article Written + Submitted by: Roger Cunningham | Senior Minister | P: 4735 1001 E: roger@epac.org.au W: www.epac.org.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm | Plus activities for adults and young people throughout the week
Growing Faith Since as long as I can remember, my boys have been checking how high they are against each other. “Who is the tallest?”, they ask, and the prize above all prizes is, “Who is taller than Dad?” Growing up is part of life. What about growing faith then? What’s struck me time and again is the way the Bible writers take an experience we all know – of being born and growing up to adulthood – and show us the opportunity to do the same with Jesus. So Paul the apostle wrote to a church on the Mediterranean, “We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing.” (2 Thessalonians 1:3). Their faith (or trust – they mean the same thing) was in Jesus Christ as their Lord and saviour, but can you see what we’re also told? Spiritual growth comes from God. It’s his work which is why Paul thanks God their faith is growing. Also, growing faith in Jesus produces growing love. It’s not just a personal experience, it affects what we do and say. Where’s all this headed? My boys are nearly all adults now. They’ve grown mature. And the goal of growing faith is that we would be spiritually mature, like Jesus, the one in whom we can trust, by God’s work in us (Colossians 1:28). Do you have a growing faith? Maybe you haven’t started trusting Jesus. Maybe you’ve trusted him a long time. Whichever it is, we all have the opportunity to have a growing faith in him. Want to know more, we’re online and back face-to-face as a church. Check out our website.

Emu Plains Commuter Car Park
Lions Club Help with Salvo’s Food Drop
Planning is underway to provide additional commuter parking at Emu Plains Station, a joint initiative of the Federal and NSW Governments. The project is part of the NSW Government’s Commuter Car Park Program, providing you with more convenient access to public transport at key interchanges and helping to ease congestion on our roads. Subject to community consultation and planning approval, construction of approximately 750 additional commuter parking spaces is expected to begin in early-2021 and be completed in early-2022. Key benefits • A new commuter car park with up to 750 additional spaces located on vacant land to the west of Emu Plains Station, off Old Bathurst Road • Additional accessible parking spaces and motorcycle parking bays • A new footbridge over Old Bathurst Road to provide safe and direct pedestrian access between the new car park and the station • A new T intersection on Old Bathurst Road to allow vehicle entry and exit into the car park • Landscaping including a vegetated drainage channel through the car park • Provision for future electric vehicle charging spaces • CCTV, lighting and wayfinding signage for improved safety and security Transport for NSW is currently seeking your feedback on the concept design for the new commuter car park. You can provide your comments by emailing projects@ transport.nsw.gov.au, calling 1800 684 490 or completing the online feedback form at https://www.transport.nsw.gov.au/projects/current-projects/emu-plains-commutercar-park. r Artist's impression of the proposed commuter car park, subject to detailed design | Image/ Article: Transport for NSW (NSW Government)
It started with a call from Lieutenant Andrea Martin, Greater West Team Leader of the Salvation Army, Glenmore Park to Jim Devine of the Lions Club of Emu Plains; saying ‘the larder’s looking empty, can you help?’ Jim put in a call to Brent Mattingly, Coles Manager at Glenmore Park, to seek approval to run a food drop and fix dates for collecting the food. Brent, as always was more than happy to help. Then it was a matter of organising Emu Plains Lions volunteers and lastly, relying on the generosity of the Coles shopping people of Glenmore Park to donate. Shoppers were asked to provide one ‘extra’ non-perishable item over their normal shop and to donate it to the Salvation Army trolley at the checkout. This collection showed the generosity of Glenmore Park Coles shoppers even during COVID-19, with 8 shopping trolleys full to the brim of food collected over 3 days. This was enough to last 2 months for the Salvos and their needy clients. The Lions volunteers were even treated to free coffees, courtesy of Carolanne from The Shed Café at Glenmore Park. The Lions Club of Emu Plains, on behalf of the Salvation Army, wishes to thank everyone involved and the kindness and generosity of the local community. r (L-R) Coles Manager, Brent Mattingly with Lions Jim, and Cheryl Devine Image: Lions Club of Emu Plains

Listening Can Be Difficult For Kids
It seems like the kids don’t listen or do as they are asked. Sometimes we as adults need to be clearer in our communication. Calm is also handy, as the calmer we are, the calmer our kids are. Parenting Strategies That Tend Not To Work... • When we focus on telling our kids ‘don’t’, ‘stop’, ‘no’, ‘quit’, and ‘not’, sometimes they disregard the ‘don’t’ etc. Or, sometimes, the ‘don’t’ can be like a dare. • Telling the child what not to do, for example, ‘don’t jump on the lounge’, ‘don’t hit your brother’. • Yelling across the room. • Yelling, hitting, name calling, put-downs. • Asking a question if you want the child to do something, for example, ‘would you...?’, ‘can you…?’, ‘do you…?’, ‘will you…?’ Your Challenge Use clear calm instructions to give kids instructions and encourage them to listen: • Say child’s name, get close, get eye contact, touch child gently; • Tell the child what to do OR • Tell the child what s/he is doing wrong and what to do instead. REMEMBER to say ‘thanks for listening’ or ‘thanks for doing as I asked’. If the child does not do as asked after two requests, issue a Consequence. It is often a good idea to give the child a calming down skill in your Clear, Calm Instruction. Example “you are shouting at me, (pause) take a deep breath and think about how you can speak to me in a calm way and with respect”. Wait calmly and quietly for the child’s response. When the child has spoken with you calmly, say “thank you for being calm and respectful”. Parents often say that this strategy is very simple but the hardest thing for them is to be calm. Your high emotional reaction is related to your values. Values are essential to guide your life, but are you going to coach/guide your child in values or force them down their throat? You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. To calm yourself take some deep breaths, and think of a happy memory (for example, a time when the child was cute or loving, etc). The aim in any parenting strategy is to teach your child how to be better, and parents have to role model that. r

First Peek at Designs for New Halls Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith recently announced that plans are forging ahead to deliver new multipurpose halls at Jamison High School and Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School (Nepean CAPA) with the first designs now released by the NSW Government. Stuart Ayres said he was excited to share the first images of the halls with the community. “I’m proud that the NSW Government is delivering these halls at Jamison High School and Nepean CAPA. These infrastructure upgrades will benefit the schools and the local community for years to come” Mr Ayres said. The halls will be custom designed to suit each school’s needs, and depending on the school, they will include features such as indoor sports courts, space to accommodate seating, sports and large equipment storage rooms, toilets, and back-of-house facilities. The halls at Jamison High School and Nepean CAPA are part of a $50 million program to deliver new and upgraded halls at 10 schools across the state. Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said she was proud that the halls program will benefit more than 6,000 NSW public school students. “I’m delighted to see the new designs for the hall projects as this is a really important program for our schools” Ms Mitchell said. “School halls are the natural gathering point for students and staff, and they can also be a vital part of a thriving local community”. “As part of the planning process for some of the halls, the Department of Education will look at opportunities for community use as well as the possibility of sharing some of the facilities with neighbouring schools in the area”. Current planning for halls includes developing a master plan and concept design, which will be shared with the local communities as the project progresses. The Department of Education is working to complete the detailed hall designs and initiate a tender process before the end of this year, with construction scheduled to start across all projects in early 2021. The NSW Government is investing $6.7 billion over four years to deliver more than 190 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW. r

Dale Hackett, representative from Winning Moves and Penrith local said: “Finally, we have the privilege to bring this globally loved game to the city that I grew up in. We want to ensure that Penrith MONOPOLY is an accurate portrayal of what locals love about the city, so we would love for everyone to get on board and send us their recommendations of what they would like to see included. Anything and everything is up for consideration – from the Nepean River and Penrith Lakes, to Penrith Panthers and Westfields – so get involved! “This edition will be everything you love about the traditional board, adapted in a way that Penrith residents will enjoy for generations to come. There will also be opportunities in the coming months for schools and individuals alike to get involved in the creation of this game, so stay tuned for more exciting details” Dale adds. MONOPOLY first hit the shelves in 1935 – since then it has been played by more than 1 billion people. Today, it is played in 114 countries and enjoyed in over 47 different languages. The new MONOPOLY: Penrith Edition will be available from March from select local businesses across the region. r Feature Article: [Cover] Dale Hackett from Winning Moves at Yandhai Nepean Crossing Bridge | Image: District Gazette [Above] What locations will feature on PENRITH MONOPOLY? | Image/Article: Winning Moves. HEALTH MATTERS
Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269
Why Vegans and Vegetarians are more at Risk Of Deficiencies ? The adequacy of all dietary patterns, omnivorous, vegetarian or vegan, depends on nutrient content of foods in the diet and the human gastrointestinal tract’s ability to extract those nutrients (including zinc). Several elements, termed ‘anti-nutrients’, found specifically within plant foods e.g.: 1. seeds (nuts/grains/pulses) 2. tubers, 3. but not generally in animal foods, significantly reduce nutrient digest/absorbability; can damage the gastrointestinal tract. This can increase vegans/vegetarian’s risk of zinc & other nutrient deficiencies, and ill-health. Such substances include: • Phytates in seeds, grains and legumes significantly reduce mineral absorption including iron, zinc, magnesium, calcium. • Tannins are a class of polyphenol-antioxidants in tea, coffee, and cocoa precipitate proteins, inhibit digestive enzymes, affect absorption of vitamins, minerals - especially iron. • Lectins: found in all food plants, especially seeds, legumes and grains, survive digestion and damage gut lining cells, interfere with nutrient digestion and absorption, change normal bacterial flora, affect gut immune state and systemically, disrupt lipid, carbohydrate and protein metabolism, promote enlargement and/or
Zinc and other
atrophy of key internal organs and tissues and alter the hormonal and immunological status. Many lectins are both antinutritive and/or toxic substances and are harmful in high amounts. • Protease inhibitors (PI’s): are small proteins, found mainly in plant storage tissues i.e. seeds (nuts/grains/pulses) & tubers (potatoes, sweet potatoes etc) that inhibit protein digestive enzymes (stomach & small intestine) and can represent up to 10% of total protein of some plant foods. • Calcium Oxalate is the primary form of calcium in many vegetables, eg spinach. Just 10% of calcium in spinach is absorbed, 40% from milk. Oxalate doesn’t hinder zinc absorption. A poorly constructed vegetarian/vegan diet with high levels of all of these antinutritive compounds, can easily lead to various nutrient deficiencies & ill health – including poor cartilage. Omnivores aren’t immune, getting 50-70% of calories from plant foods with the same antinutritive compounds hindering absorption of nutrients from their animal foods. Typical omnivores may eat (high tannin) coffee, (high-phytate/ lectin/PI) toast or cereal for breakfast; meat & salad surrounded by (high-phytate/lectin/PI) sandwich bread for lunch; pizza (low nutrient high high-phytate/lectin/PI white flour dough) for dinner. Easy-to-see how their health might suffer. Next month ways to remove anti-nutritives from vegan foods.

We are at the pointy end of the year. Historically, November is the nose dive into all the upcoming Christmas festivities. This year has definitely been a challenging one, and it is without doubt that the Christmas Season will carry with it significant impacts marking the year that was. It's important we try to come together and consolidate the bumpy journey's we have all experienced in one way or another and celebrate that we made it through, that we're here to tell the stories. There are plenty of great new things happening in and across our community, despite the impacts of COVID through the rubble, beautiful things are beginning to blossom. We have plenty of great reading this month, why not find yourself a nice spot in the garden with a cuppa and your favourite local paper? 'The happiest people in life are the givers, not the getters' Enjoy Your Community News.
