What do I Pray? ‘What do you pray?’. You might be surprised by the question, but experience suggests most of us do at least some of the time. When Jesus’ followers had him to themselves, they seized the opportunity and asked him to teach them to pray. You’ve probably heard his answer. We call it the Lord’s prayer. But have you ever thought about why Jesus taught these words? Here they are, from Matthew chapter 6 verse 9 ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from the evil one’. And you’ve probably heard this on the end too ‘For yours is the kingdom and the power and glory are yours forever. Amen’ These fifty-three words (in English) have in many ways shaped the world. But that’s not to say they are a mantra you just say over and over again to get closer to God. Or that they are the username and password to get what you want from God. But they do reveal who we pray to, and where we stand before him, and what we need from him. Here’s a suggestion - pray the whole prayer and think about one phrase especially. Ask yourself, ‘What does it say about God? About me? And about what’s important?’ Then next time you pray it, do the same with the next phrase. And if you’d like to know more about prayer, visit our website epac.org.au, go to Church with a Difference, click on ‘Previous Recordings’ and check out our series that focused on ‘Talking to God’.

Local cricketers in the Penrith district will be able to hone their craft for this summer of cricket with the opening of two new cricket nets thanks to a collaboration between the NSW Government, Cricket NSW, Nepean District Cricket Association and Penrith City Council. The new facilities at Dukes Oval, Emu Plains and Shepherd Street Reserve, Colyton replaced old, dated infrastructure which had reached the end of its usable life and was considered no longer fit for purpose. In their place are new 3-lane cricket nets which have added capacity at the grounds for increased usage. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the upgrade of the cricket nets will provide modern, safe, and compliant cricket infrastructure for a range of users throughout Penrith. “These new cricket nets provide additional sport and recreation infrastructure to deliver healthy and social outcomes for the community” Cr Fowler said. “The immediate improvement of the cricket training facilities will not only assist participation growth but will allow the delivery of Cricket Australia junior cricket programs and establish elite cricket pathways in the Penrith region. “Penrith has developed some great cricketers and by continuing to invest in these facilities we are able to ensure long term development and delivery of junior, senior and community cricket programs. “It is also important to acknowledge the work of the NSW Government, Cricket NSW, Nepean District Cricket Association and Penrith Junior Cricket Association in working together to deliver these fantastic facilities for our community. These partnerships are integral in providing our communities with the infrastructure for healthy and active lifestyles” Cr Fowler said. “We’ve given more than $4 million to clubs and councils to support 133 projects across NSW during the first two rounds and we’re proud to see the positive impacts of the Legacy Fund”. Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said cricketers across western Sydney would benefit from the NSW Government’s investment in local cricket infrastructure. “We’re not just investing in nets and wickets, but the next baggy green, baggy blue, Thunder or Sixers player to come from western Sydney” Mr Ayres said. “But most of all we’re investing in the benefits our kids get from participating in sport and a healthy, active lifestyle”. Cricket in Penrith is continuing to grow with the Penrith Junior Cricket Association comprising of 1,000 members (900 males; 100 females) and the Nepean District Cricket Association having similar numbers which is being led by programs such as ‘Girls Cricket’ and ‘Blast’ programs. r (L-R) Pat Yates (President NDCA), Lachlan Steuart (Cricket NSW Cricket Manager Penrith/Blue Mountains), Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM, Adam Coleman (Secretary NDCA) and Lauren Coates (Cricket NSW Community Facilities Coordinator) at the new 3-lane cricket nets at Dukes Oval, Emu Plains | Image: Penrith City Council

Local businesswoman and our resident education expert, Sara Drebber, is a finalist in the 2020 Altitude Awards for her second consecutive year. This time she is a finalist for the Revolutionary and Best Professional Service Business Categories. These categories are for outstanding service-based professional businesses and groundbreakers in their industry throughout their career, respectively. Sara is a passionate educator, consultant, writer, and mother of three, whose award-winning local business, edUcatered, has flourished under her guidance since its inception 3 years ago. With almost 20 years’ experience working in education, Sara brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role as an educational consultant and tutor. It has always been her aim to create a nurturing and supportive environment in which children can develop and learn, so the finalist awards are just a bonus to the joy of supporting learning of those using her service. “It is an honour to be included in both a business excellence and leadership category this year. I am grateful to have this opportunity to be recognised for my hard-work and that of my team, especially given the challenges we have faced this year with the pandemic” Sara explained. The Altitude Awards are jointly presented by Women with Altitude and The Men’s Altitude Network. They are held annually to provide an opportunity to acknowledge those who have made outstanding contributions as business owners, volunteers, employees, creative thinkers, and leaders. Women with Altitude founder, Andrea Turner-Boys said, “We look forward to this time each year when we celebrate and champion the achievements of individuals and teams from our regions. Each finalist has been chosen for their outstanding contributions in their field and will be presented with their finalist certificates at regional networking events across NSW and the ACT, throughout the month of September”. An independent judging panel adjudicates the awards, and winners of each category will be announced at a gala awards ball on Saturday 7th November at the LCC Event Centre in Prestons NSW. r

Lions are Still Donating

We've got you covered!

In these troubled times, it is hard to reconcile words like ‘great’, ‘happy’, pleased’ or ‘put a smile on a face’, but we think Emu Plains Lions Club manages it, even if on a small scale. Emu Plains Lions, in conjunction with Penrith, Cambridge Park and Winmalee Lions Clubs operated the Chocolate Wheel at Westfield Plaza Penrith, every Saturday morning during 2019 and before Covid-19. Then once a year, there is a ‘divvy-up’ between those Lions Clubs deciding who, amongst their respective local charities, they will support, from the proceeds. This year, Emu Plains Lions were able to share $500 with each of Kurrambee School (Werrington), Nepean Prostate Cancer Support Group, Nepean Cancer Care Centre, Barnardo’s (Cranebrook), Australian Lions Foundation, Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (Glenmore Park) and Christ Mission Possible (Kingswood). Plus, $1,000 also with each of Parkinson’s NSW Research and Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy (UWS Kingswood). And thanks to Trang, the owner/operator of Nourishmint Café in Lennox Village, and a fundraising dinner, they were able to also share $1,000 with The Haven-Women’s Shelter. Unfortunately, the Chocolate Wheel has not operated since March and thus their major revenue source is shut off to them at present time. They are interested in new and ‘old’ ventures that will generate funds and in the greatest mechanism by which they can generate those funds, MEMBERS! You too can help the community by joining the Lions Club of Emu Plains by contacting John Choma, Membership Manager on jwchoma@bigpond.com or 4735 5120. r Trang, owner/operator of Nourishment Cafe, with staff | Image: Lisa Berwick Locally based disability support services business specialising in social and community participation activities. Field of Dreams There is no doubt that the current pandemic has had a big impact on grassroots sport in the community. With seasons reduced and various restrictions in place, clubs are now adjusting to the changes and the new normal. Emu Plains Hockey Club is one such club that has come together, thanks to the dedication of its players, families, and friends. This year, the Nepean Hockey Association season has been reduced to a 9-week round competition, with 2 weeks of finals at the end. The season is shorter and has started later, resulting in it now running a little longer into the warmer months. Despite these challenges, Emu Plains Hockey Club have 152 members across 6 junior teams and 8 senior teams. They are also the largest junior club in the association, for the third year in a row. This season has also seen the local club fielding two A Grade and First Grade teams for the first time. “As the Club President, I have been proud of the way in which the club have come together and focused on playing for enjoyment this season. Additional restrictions imposed have made it difficult to have any social aspect and, in particular, the club volunteers have had a tough time organising everything with the added requirements. Everyone has banded together and worked hard to ensure that we have had a season. This has seen some great improvements right across the board” explained Chris Eagleton, President of Emu Plains Hockey Club to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. To follow the progress of the club, visit their website www. emuplainshockey.com.au for find them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/emuplainshockey.com.au/.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/

All Feelings are OK

Some parents tell their children that strong emotions such as anger, frustration, and excitement are unacceptable. Strong emotions are OK. They are normal and all of us will feel them at some time in the day or week. Strong emotions are quite motivating and energising. Think about how much can get done when people get angry (for example, Vincent Lingiari, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela). So, all feelings are OK, but it is what we do with our emotions that matters. It is not OK to hurt someone else’s feelings or physically hurt others when we are angry. It is also not OK to blame someone else for how we feel, for example “you make me feel angry”. You are having the emotion and taking responsible for how you feel gives you the power to change it. Blame is a dead-end street – it stops you from feeling that you can take the initiative to make changes. The components of emotional regulation include (for children aged over 4 years): • Acknowledging where you are at – Feel it to heal it. • Labelling your feelings – Name it to tame it. • Doing something to calm down – Deep breathing, counting backwards, telling yourself to ‘calm down’, thinking happy thoughts. • When you are calm, understanding what was going on for you. When the child is calm and ready to talk, calmly discuss the behaviours you observed and what was said. Ask the child what might have sparked the outburst. What was s/he feeling? Google ‘feelings chart’ and ‘anger iceberg’ for some cool visuals. And finally, what could the child do better next time when s/ he is having big feelings? All disruptions are opportunities for repair and learning. Parenting is an opportunity to coach a child in ways that make them better humans. As parents, we also have to role model the skills we want our children to learn, so emotional regulation starts with us. r

Tender Release for Upgrade at Lapstone Public School Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has announced that the upgrade at Lapstone Public School is a step closer, with a call made for the construction tenders. “The construction will deliver an upgraded library/ classroom and administration building to benefit the students, teachers and families of Lapstone Public School”. “I’m pleased that the project has reached this important milestone” Stuart Ayres said. “We want our children to have the best possible facilities and this upgrade will deliver modern resources for the students, now and into the future”. It is anticipated a construction contractor will be engaged in late October. Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said she was pleased the project is progressing. “The Department of Education is working hard to deliver the school facilities that students and local communities deserve” Ms Mitchell said. “This includes building new schools, but also upgrading existing facilities to enhance the educational environment for students across the state”. The NSW Government is investing $6.7 billion over four years to deliver more than 190 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW. v Images: Artist’s impressions of the Lapstone Public School upgrade | Images Supplied

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

What are Good Food Sources of Zinc for my Joint Cartilage? Zinc has outstanding global public health importance. Last month, we showed zinc’s virtues for knee and other cartilage. We saw that zinc activates > 300 bodily enzymes, that it’s used in > 3000 different humanproteins representing 10% of all body proteins. So, it’s IMPORTANT!! Australia’s government recommends a daily zinc intake from food (RDA) of 14mg (men), 8mg (women), 11 and 12mg during pregnancy and lactation. Other countries recommend even higher intake levels. Many Australian men (37%) and women (9%) have inadequate zinc intakes. For males 71 years and older, 66% get inadequate zinc, as do 82% of pregnant women worldwide. Zinc is particularly important for pregnant women, who are vulnerable due to additional zinc demands associated with pregnancy and fetal development. Vegetarians generally get less zinc and are vulnerable to deficiency. Modern diet/lifestyles make getting enough zinc difficult (more next month). So that you get an idea of foods to eat regularly to improve zinc nutriture, I’ve listed zinc content (per

10 October 2020 www.emuleonaygazette.com.au

100g) for common foods below. Obviously, plant foods are poorer sources. In order of zinc content, fruits < vegetables < legumes < nuts ≈ ground spices ≈ fish/animal products < liver < oysters. All foods are uncooked. • Fruits: oranges 0.06mg >pawpaw 0.3mg • Vegetables: tomatoes 0.12mg > garlic 1.0mg • Legumes: kidney-bean 1.0mg >soya-flour 4.1mg • Grains: wheat 0.84mg (white) 1.3mg (w/meal); rice 1.2mg (white) 1.7mg, (brown) > 5.96mg wild-rice • Ground spices (dried): paprika 4.33mg > cocoa 7.5mg (coffee contains just 0.01mg) • Nuts/Seeds (dried): hazelnuts 2.2mg; > pumpkin-seeds 7.46mg; • Fish: salmon 0.42mg > sardines 3.1mg; • Animal products: parmesan cheese 6.5mg; beef 3.91-8.2mg; lamb 8.72-10.0mg; veal liver; 12.0mg; • Oysters: 11 -91mg; A more detailed list is available in the web version of this article at www.districtgazette.com.au. It’s easy to see why the elderly who tend to eat less, and those vegans/vegetarians, or pregnant/nursing mothers who don’t plan meal composition well, risk zinc deficiency. The same holds true for non-vegetarians who eat poorly. You can supplement, but this has its own issues. Eating good food is the best way of getting your zinc. If you have any health issues and would like to know how diet may help, please give the clinic a call. r

Zachary’s Mental Health Awareness Challenge

Price: $7,000 ono

Located at Emu Plains St Paul’s Anglican Church General Cemetery Short Street Emu Plains Many of us see the Great River Walk around the Nepean River as a relaxing way of taking in some of the area’s picturesque landscapes. For local man Zachary Ryan, he saw this as a challenge, flipping a 130kg tyre around the 6.4km loop whilst setting himself the goal of raising $10,000 for charity. Zachary’s Let’s Make a Flippin’ Change Challenge took place on Sunday the 30th of August, starting at 3:00am in the morning and finishing at 7:35am, in a gruelling time of 4 hours and 35 minutes. The inspirational feat helped to raise funds for the mental health charity LIVIN. “My motivation for the event was to raise awareness of mental health. This was due to it being such a pressing issue and I believe we have all been affected by it, whether it be personally or of a loved one or a friend. I wanted to be able to make a difference and to try and get the community talking about mental health as much as possible. The organisation LIVIN helped me by providing a platform of which I could make some noise” explained Zachary to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. With the help of his GoFundMe page, he has raised just over $12,000, which includes $11,550 in donations from the public and a $500 cheque from St Mary’s Rugby League Club. Training for the challenge was quite intense, consisting of a gym-based strength program mixed with cardio as well as flipping the heavy tyre regularly along a 20m stretch in front of his house. “Including the Nepean River flip, I had flipped the tyre roughly 35,000 times for 70kms. This was for a total of 43 hours, 18 minutes, and 55 seconds” he added. Completing the challenge was a surreal moment for Zachary, having loved ones, friends, and the local community at the finish line to support him. “It was a mixture of relief and pride. Receiving messages from people in the community letting me know how this has impacted them was one of the highlights of the whole experience. I started this challenge hoping I could impact or just have a positive influence on one person, through the support of many. There was none bigger than the lads from the Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk. I can quite honestly say, I am sure I have made a positive impact. However, I’m definitely not satisfied, and I want to do more to negate such a growing issue” he ended. Donations can still be made at Zachary’s GoFundMe page at https://gf.me/u/ymdz7f.

Get Started

RSPCA Cupcake Day

1.Prepare Grab your apron and preheat those ovens – Cupcake Day is returning this October, with the official day Monday 26th October. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus crisis, we will not be hosting a Cupcake Day this year. So sad! We will have to eat all of the cupcakes ourselves!! We have a fundraiser page on the RSPCA website for online donations. We will match all donations that we receive!! So bake away and donate to the RSPCA.

https://www.rspcacupcakeday.com. au/fundraise/fundraisers/profile/view/ orchardhillsvet Share some of your photos on our Facebook page of your baking successes, masterpieces and failures!!! This year, thousands more furry faces, waggy tails and feathered wings need your baking skills more than ever. With safety precautions still in mind, we’d love you to return for a socially safe, physically distanced or virtually vibrant Cupcake Day to remember. Whether you’re whipping up doughnuts, lamingtons, brownies or traditional cupcakes, the funds you raise at your Cupcake Day event help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals in need all over the country. Invite your workmates, schoolmates and regular mates along for a sweet-tastic time. With a pinch of community and a cup of good conversation, your Cupcake Day event has the potential to bake real change! If you can’t host your Cupcake Day in person there’s no ‘knead’ to worry – get your workplace crew together online to share a cupcake (or two), to help raise much-needed funds to fight animal cruelty.

Monday 26th October

You can use Skype, Zoom, Facetime or Messenger to host your Cupcake Day online. Share your fundraising page to everyone joining and ask guests to donate what they would have contributed to your physical Cupcake Day event.

2. Plan

Decide what your online event looks like. Will it be a virtual bake-off, a knock, drop and dash in exchange for a donation – take baking orders from your friends, family or work colleagues and deliver them straight to their doorstep! You could even host an online baking quiz, Masterchef trivia anyone?

3. Party

Party up with your friends and family over a virtual cuppa, enjoy your favourite sweet and savoury treats and share your favourite recipes with your guests. Play some virtual games and fundraise from home. Don’t forget to hang up your bunting and most importantly tell everyone about all the animals they’re helping! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work. I’m not going to lie, I’m very excited about the sunshine and the beautiful Spring days we’ve been enjoying of late. Despite our cautious ‘covid’ ways - it’s refreshing to see people out and about enjoying the sunshine, supporting local businesses while adhering to safe guidelines and recommendations. Like many, I’ve spent a few days in the garden - while not a ‘green’ thumb there’s something to be said about a neat and inviting garden, especially at this time of the year. I could sit in the garden, eyes closed listening to nature and it’s surrounds for hours. It’s a great way to ‘reset’ and ‘refocus’. And so is reading this latest edition of ‘Your Community News’. We have plenty of light reading this month, why not find yourself a nice spot in the garden with a cuppa and your favourite local paper! ‘Yesterday is heavy, learn to put it down’. Enjoy Your Community News.
