2021 Leura Cancelled

Gardens

Festival

It is after much careful consideration and in light of the current serious COVID-19 situation in NSW and other states, that the Leura Gardens Festival committee has made the difficult decision to cancel the Festival scheduled for October 2021. Their main considerations included not wanting to put the many garden visitors, volunteers, and garden owners at risk. The committee would particularly like to acknowledge the garden owners who, once again, have committed considerable time, effort, and money in preparing their gardens in anticipation of the Festival going ahead. Hence, it was also considered that a decision not to proceed needed to be made sooner rather than later. They plan to make their 2022 Festival a wonderful celebration for all garden lovers. They look forward to welcoming everyone back to the upper Blue Mountains, to enjoy their beautiful cool-climate gardens and a return to a safe and healthy world. The 2022 Festival will be held over two long weekends in early Spring. Information is available on the Festival website at www. leuragardensfestival.com.au or by calling 0431 095279. Follow Leura Gardens Festival on Facebook and Instagram too for more news and updates.

The Bird Whisperer Time in lockdown has given many of us opportunities to restart those hobbies that we’ve never really had time for. For Blaxland local Merryl Watkins, it was a chance to pick up her camera and realise her passion for photography. “Like a lot of people, I took photos on holidays. It wasn’t until our children were in primary school that I took photography up as a hobby. It was just something I did every now and then, until a few years ago I did a course through the Nepean Community College and then joined a camera club” explained Merryl. “When Covid hit last year, I decided to put a post a day on the Blue Mountains Community Facebook page as a way of reminding people, and myself, to look around and see the beauty of our area. I did that for nearly a year and having that target made me use my camera every day. That’s when I realised it wasn’t just a hobby, but a passion” she continued. Merryl loves to photograph birds, especially natives and is amazed at the variety we have in Australia. “My absolute favourite subject is our neighbour’s scribbly gum and the birds who visit a nesting hollow in it, especially the Galahs who use the hollow and the Rainbow Lorikeets who try to take it. They are fascinating to watch, and their story has turned into quite a saga with lots of drama. I started sharing it on the community Facebook page and it became a soap opera. It is a bit of fun in what is a very hard time for many people” said Merryl. Where is Merryl’s most liked place to take photos? In her own backyard, of course! Her family has a large loquat tree and many birds come to feed off the flowers and fruit. “We have birdbaths and lots of native plants. Even though some of the plants are still getting established, the number of birds coming is just wonderful. There are several different Honeyeaters, Fairy-Wrens, Wattlebirds, Thornbills, Eastern Yellow Robins, King Parrots, Rosellas, Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos and more. I can be inside and hear birds or look out the window and see them and grab my camera” she smiled. To discover her amazing work, search Merryl Watkins Photography on Facebook and Instagram. Bringing Albert to Life

Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School Year 9 student Lucas is an up-and-coming artist to watch, after having one of his artworks recently entered into the 2021 Staedtler Secondary School Artist of the Year Competition. The talented Creative Arts student’s portrait of Albert Einstein was entered into the Junior Section (Year 7 to 9) of the competition. It was open for all Year 7 to Year 12 students. “I am often creating artworks for various competitions, but I wanted to find an image that had an interesting face with complexities. I am always looking for images that are challenging to develop my techniques and skills further. When you look at the face of Albert, it is quite interesting and difficult to render realistically” explained Lucas to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. Lucas’ amazing drawing took 5 days to complete, where he would work 6 hours a day on it. He estimates the whole project taking about 30 hours. “I decided to do this image as I wanted to draw someone that was famous, but not necessarily someone contemporary as not everyone would recognise them. Someone that was celebrated for his contributions to society and a face that everyone knows. I also found his face challenging, due to the large number of wrinkles. I was really inspired to render it as realistic as possible and in fact I want to develop my artmaking into a hyper realistic style. I was inspired by the artist Jono Dry” he said. Lucas began drawing at the age of just 6, starting with rendered graphite before progressing to coloured pencils after having private art lessons. “My favourite thing to draw is definitely portraits and drawing them realistically. I have also been exploring painting techniques with oil painting being my favoured medium in paint. But drawing is where my passion lies” Lucas replied. He hopes to one day become a professional artist and a household name in the arts industry. “I have entered the Young Archibald Prize when in primary school, but this is definitely something that I am considering for next year and beyond. One day I hope that I can create an Archibald Prize winning artwork that will be hung in the NSW Art Gallery and celebrated by NSW patrons and art lovers”. r Lucas’ portrait of Albert Einstein | Image Supplied by Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School

Keeping Children Safe Online: What Are They Seeing?

ho

o

l

How do we prepare children to cross the road? We speak to them about the risks, we practise looking right and left, and we show them how to identify zebra crossings. In the beginning, we hold their hands and walk with them. Now consider, have you given as much thought to preparing your child to cross what is dubbed “the information superhighway” – the internet? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of Covid-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. Over the next three articles, we explore three questions every parent must ask when their child uses the internet: 1. What are they seeing? 2. What are they doing? 3. Who are they talking to? According to eSafety research, most young people have viewed inappropriate content before the age of 17. Nearly half of children aged 9 to 16 regularly view sexual images. These images are most often viewed on either content-sharing apps such as Snapchat or Discord, or on live-streaming platforms such as TikTok or Periscope. How do you know what your child is seeing? Your first thought might be to maximise parental controls (and this is important), but the first step to online safety does not require technology. It is the simple, powerful but often under-estimated tool of parenting: Talking to your child. According to research from our national Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, only half of Australian parents regularly talk to their children about online safety. It is vital to create the space for your children to speak to you honestly about any concerns they have about their internet use. Here are some ways you can do this: • Be curious and supportive, learn about their favourite games or apps; • Talk to them about the risks of going online; • Problem-solve together what they might do if they see something scary or yucky online; • Avoid using the removal of devices as a behavioural consequence. Upgrade Commences at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has announced that early construction works have commenced on the upgrade at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School following the recent development application approval. The upgrade will transform the existing school by delivering a new multi-purpose hall that can be used for indoor sports, assemblies or performances and includes sports and equipment storage rooms and toilets. Stuart Ayres said the whole school community would benefit from the upgrade. “The upgrade at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School will ensure that local students will benefit from the latest in school design as well as new education technologies,” Stuart Ayres said. “I am thrilled to see the NSW Government delivering for Western Sydney”. Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said the NSW Government was building on the State’s world class education system and was pleased to see the upgrade progressing. “This major upgrade at Nepean Creative and Performing Arts High School will provide students with the high-quality education facilities our children need to succeed,” Ms Mitchell said. The NSW Government is investing $7.9 billion over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver 215 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW. r Artist’s impression of the upgrade | Image Supplied

All Eyes on the Weather Penrith Storm Chasing is a not-for-profit group that works alongside emergency services and relevant authorities to provide weather updates to the local community. Formed by John Scerri in 2011, and joined by Nathan Brookfield, Grant Purday and Jimmy Deguara the popular group has over 50,000 followers on Facebook. “The group helps disseminate forecasts and warnings relating to severe storms and other significant weather such as the recent flooding and bushfires, hailstorms, strong winds and even heat waves. We take feedback including photographs and videos from the public and assist in alleviating any concerns and provide information and contact to the relevant authorities such as the RFS, SES and the Bureau of Meteorology” said Grant Purday of Penrith Storm Chasing. “When a warning is issued by one of the authorities, which includes the Bureau of Meteorology, NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW State Emergency Service, NSW Emergency Management Act and/or any other Government authority under the Act, Penrith Storm Chasing gets notified. If these warnings are relevant to our community, we post them to our page” Grant continued. Penrith Storm Chasing have aided the NSW Rural Fire Service, organising a GoFundMe campaign to ‘Help Castlereagh Rural Fire Brigade’, in response to the 2019/2020 bushfires. The funds raised by the group and local community bought critical items to help with the training of its members and assisting with public awareness. They also helped Penrith State Emergency Service to get members of the public to help build sandbags with the recent floods. “I love working with the team, as they all come from a variety of fields with experience and background skillsets. We all have a common passion involving weather and in particular assisting others in the Penrith and surrounding regions, from both an educational perspective and helping do what we can to keep people safe” explained Grant. IN THE NEWS

Free Learner Driver Workshops are Back Teaching a young person to drive is a huge responsibility, and Penrith City Council in partnership with Transport for NSW (TfNSW) are running a series of free online workshops to support people who are supervising young adults as they learn to drive. The online workshops, hosted on Zoom, are designed to help supervisors prepare for the role by covering topics such as laws that apply to L and P licence holders, completing the Learner Driver logbook, and the benefits of well supervised on-road driving experience. The course has been developed by TfNSW who recognise the important role that parents, and supervisors play in supporting inexperienced learner drivers while they complete the required hours of on-road supervised driving experience before sitting for the test to progress to the provisional (P1) licence. The first online workshop is being held on Wednesday 15 September, with registrations now open. To prepare for this important role, join a free workshop that will reduce the stress for the supervisor and the learner, and make every lesson more effective. Attendees will gain information, practical advice, and a structured approach to building the competency of their learner, along with confidence in teaching safe driving habits. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM said teaching someone to drive is an important and serious responsibility, and both teacher and learner need to be supported through

this process. “Those attending the online workshop will find it is much easier to navigate the requirements of the logbook and provide effective lessons after they've picked up the skills in the workshop,” said Cr McKeown. Register for the workshops below by visiting penrith.city/ events • Workshop #1 Wednesday 15 September 2021 from 6pm-7.15pm

FAITH - EMU PLAINS ANGLICAN Article Written + Submitted by: Roger Cunningham | Senior Minister | P: 4735 1001 | E: roger@epac.org.au W: www.epac.org.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8:00am, 9:30am and 6:30pm | Plus activities for adults and young people throughout the week

The Father of Fatherhood This month it’s Father’s Day. I love being a father. I love caring for my kids and leading them in a way that will help them grow up. Now my kids are adults what I do for them looks quite a bit different, but I’ll never stop caring for them, or being their father. It’s a privilege to be a father, and it’s also a privilege to have one who does it well. I know too not everyone has had a good experience of fathers. That’s a tragedy. It’s a tragedy because of what we’re meant to be as fathers and expect of fathers. The size of the pain only goes to show how important good fathering is. When we see bad fathering, or just OK fathering, we long for excellent fathering. Where can we find that? Well, Jesus when he walked the earth kept saying something extraordinary. He kept calling God his Father. Not only that, but he also said we could call God our Father too, if our trust is in Jesus. Do you know the Lord’s prayer, and do you remember how it begins - “Our Father in heaven”. That’s quite something. It’s something because it shows us God isn’t remote or distant, or simply a cosmic force, he’s personal, and he’s interested, and he cares for the people he has made, and that he remakes through Jesus. What’s more, he doesn’t get things wrong the way earthly fathers do, he uses his strength to provide our needs, and to lead us to grow up in trusting Jesus, and through Jesus, him. In fact, God is the father of fatherhood itself, and he can be our father too. Will you trust him for that? HEALTH MATTERS

Chronic Migraine – Could it Really Have a Simple Solution? This article was inspired by a patient who has suffered ongoing debilitating migraines for some years. The patient attended the clinic while in the middle of a 4-day migraine attack, which had been preceded by visual aura. Her severe headache was accompanied by photophobia (sensitivity to light) and bouts of nausea and vomiting. The patient had spent a considerable amount of time suffering on her bathroom floor, sick and in semi-darkness. Medications had been ineffective, and she was desperate for relief. The Greek word for migraine is ‘hemikrania’ and comes from the Greek roots hemi (half ) and kranion (skull or head) literally ‘half the head’. Our modern term migraine defines a recurrent throbbing headache that typically affects one side (or area) of the head, often with intense pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines are of two types, those: 1. with aura - called classic migraine 2. without aura called common migraine Auras are visual-field or other disturbances that usually strike before the migraine itself: • Flashes of light • Shimmering spots or stars • Blind spots (scotomas), with simple geometric designs • Zigzag lines floating across the visual field • Other changes in vision, or

• Vision loss But can include other temporary symptoms: • Numbness, typically felt as tingling in a hand or one side of the face that may spread slowly along a limb • Speech or language difficulty • Muscle weakness 4.9 million Australians suffer migraines, 71% are women, 86% of working age. 7.6% of migraine sufferers experience chronic migraine (≥15 migraine days-per-month). The estimated $35.7 billion personal and financial costs Australia-wide are staggering: o $14.3 billion in health system costs o $16.3 billion of productivity costs o $5.1 billion other costs Unfortunately, these costs are likely needlessly incurred as the majority of migraines are generally easily treated, usually without pain killers. The above patient was given a full body remedial treatment with appropriate additional Muscle Elongation Therapy applied to specific head, neck, and shoulder muscles. Immediately following treatment, all migraine symptoms had abated and the patient sat smiling and yawning ready for home and sleep. If you’ve been suffering migraine or other headaches, feel free to call the clinic. Next month well take a further look at what science says about migraine cause.

Fourth Man Charged with Murder following Investigations into Fatal Stabbing at Emu Plains

Leonay’s Jessica Fox, a silver medallist in London, and a bronze medallist from Rio, had to put the ‘disappointment' of a third place in the K1 in Tokyo behind her, and she delivered when it mattered most – and in doing so entered the record books as the very first winner of the Women's C1 at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She entered the C1 final as the fastest qualifier after a blistering run of 1:10:59 in the semi-final in oppressive conditions and had to sit and watch as competitors posted a time to beat. Showing the composure, she's become known for over many years, Fox was in control of her run, to post a time of 1:05:04, a clear 3 seconds from her nearest rival, Mallory Franklin of Great Britain. German Andrea Herzog claimed the bronze medal. The 27-year-old, for so long the face of the sport in Australia and across the globe, was cheered on by her coach and mother Myriam and sister Noemie in Tokyo, while dad Richard was in the commentary box bringing every twist and turn to Australian viewers. With Richard and Myriam both Olympians in their own successful careers, Jessica now has the one medal to complete the special set. Australian gold. "It's the most special moment, truly amazing," Fox exclaimed following the event. "It's been a really tough couple of days emotionally and mentally, but it's all worthwhile”. Fox joined her fellow competitors in campaigning for the C1 to be included in the Olympic program, and the hard work behind the scenes has resulted in the ultimate reward. So aware of her public support, Fox made a special shout out for the thousands of messages of support she had received in the countdown to Tokyo. "Hopefully we've inspired a lot of people, particularly young boys and girls along the way. "The Olympics is already such a special event for me, but I really wanted this moment, and I'll never stop looking at this medal”. r Feature Article: [Cover + Above] An emotional Olympics for Jessica. Homicide Squad detectives have charged a fourth man with murder following investigations into the fatal stabbing of another man in Sydney’s west last year. About 8am on Thursday 24 September 2020, emergency services were called to a reserve on Russell Street at Emu Plains, after the body of a man was located. He has since been formally identified as a 22-year-old Minchinbury man. A vehicle found crashed nearby was seized for forensic examination. Detectives from Nepean Police Area Command and the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad established Strike Force Mathinna to investigate the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. So far during the investigation, seven men – aged 20, 21, 22, 23, 25, 26 and 27 – have been charged over their alleged roles in the incident and remain before the courts. Following further extensive inquiries, Homicide Squad detectives attended a correctional facility at Nowra and arrested a 22-year-old man just before 9am (Wednesday 11 August 2021). He was subsequently charged with murder and remanded in custody. The man appeared at both Nowra Local Court and Mt Druitt Local Court last month

Happy Fathers Day A Poem from Your Dog Before I was a Dog Dad: I had never been peed on, pooped on, drooled on, chewed on or nipped by puppy teeth. Before I was a Dog Dad: I had complete control of my thoughts, my body and mind. I slept all night without sharing the pillows or covers. Before I was a Dog Dad: I never looked into big soulful eyes and cried. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn’t stop a hurt. I never knew something so furry and four legged could affect my heart so deeply. Before I was a Dog Dad: I had never held a sleeping puppy just because I couldn’t put it down. I had never gotten out of bed in the middle of the night to make sure all was well. I didn’t know how good it feels to feed a hungry puppy. I didn’t know that something so small could make me feel so important. Before I was a Dog Dad: I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderment or the satisfaction of being a dog Dad. Images: www.pixabay.com w

Spring is finally here! It’s hard to believe that the month of September is already upon us. Where has this year gone? We are in the midst of the lockdown across Greater Sydney; however, things are looking positive. The Premier has announced that restrictions should be eased by the end of the month, as the COVID-19 vaccination rates increase. Never has it been more important than now to support local business. Whether it’s a home delivered meal from a café or restaurant or a trade/service that you need for home, businesses in our community need our help. Get behind them and show your support where you can. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have come and gone, and the Paralympic Games have begun. Millions across the country have been cheering on our Aussie athletes as they take on the world’s best. This month’s stories are filled with inspiration and hope – ‘hope’ that we can all finish the year positively, safely and healthily together. Stay kind, it makes you beautiful. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
