The Silver Fox
She’s been dubbed “The Silver Fox”, although “Flying Fox” is equally appropriate. The way she ‘flew’ down the canoe slalom course on her final run to clock a blistering time and earn a silver medal for her efforts was nothing short of incredible. The Olympics are over, but things are now just hotting up for our local Olympic hero as Jessica returns home to new-found fame and glory. The mega-talented teenager from Leonay hasn’t been able to wipe the smile off her face after winning Olympic silver in the K1 canoe slalom. Now she won’t be able to walk down the street without people wanting her autograph. What she’s really looking forward to now is just being a normal teenager for a while. “I can’t wait to stay in one place for a while,’’ said Jessica. “I can’t wait to see all my friends.”
Spring is in the Air!
If my chilblains are any sort of measure, it’s been a c-c-c-cold winter! After being caught in the snow up the hill in the last couple of weeks of August, it’s good to see the sunshine and smell the sweet and almost too subtle scent of the freezias now breaking into bloom. Speaking of blooming, the gardens up in the Mountains are now a riot of fabulous colour. Read all about the upcoming Leura Garden Festival in our Celebrate Spring feature inside.

behalf of all our readers to our Olympic hero, Jessica Fox! I was devastated when my TV carked it the night of the canoe slalom finals. I had to rush down to Harvey Norman the very next day. The salesman was halfway through his pitch when I saw the replay on about a hundred TVs of varying degrees of hugeness. I interrupted him midsentence to concentrate on watching Jessica in action. I had to explain, when he started showing signs of impatience, that Jess is OUR very own star - she lives just up the road! He obviously wasn’t a local! I hope you all saw the congratulatory signs on the roundabout off the highway before the winds blew them away! One good thing about the Olympics being over is that I can finally catch up on some sleep! And now, it’s time to think about cleaning the pool – spring has sprung! Just in case you’re not yet prepared for the warmer weather, here’s something to keep you cool. It was cool indeed, when this pic was snapped in Blackheath during the last fortnight of winter! Enjoy this Spring edition of your community news.

MOVE OVER NASA! McCarthy Students have SPACE TO GROW!
McCarthy Catholic College teacher Ross Cutts star gazing on the computer with “Space to Grow” students
Ross Cutts is IT Manager and Physics teacher at McCarthy Catholic College, Emu Plains and an enthusiastic cyclist, but he used military strength transport to relocate a decommissioned radio telescope from Narrabri to Springwood. Telescopes are hot topics at McCarthy and used by Year 11 Physics during Astronomy Studies but also by Space to Grow Gifted and Talented students in Years 7-10. Through partnership with Macquarie and Charles Sturt Universities, students also have access to the Faulkes telescopes at Coonabarabran and on the Hawaiian island of Maui.
KJ Rocks the Holidays
School students looking for something new to do these holidays will be excited to learn about the brand new KJ’s Performing Arts Day Camp, run by staff from local music school, Kalinda Jade Studios. Students aged five to 18 can participate in the camp which will run on each Wednesday of the next school holidays. Each day runs from 9.30am-3.30pm with music, dance and drama activities designed to keep kids of all ages, abilities and experience entertained. The camp is based at the South Penrith Neighbourhood Centre. Primary school aged students (aged five to 12) will participate in workshops on drumming, singing, dancing and music including games and performing. Older students (aged 13 and up) will participate in the school holiday KJ Rock program in which they’ll form bands and learn how to play music as a group. According to owner and teacher, Kalinda McDonald, it doesn’t matter how much experience students have with the performing arts. “We welcome students with absolutely no experience in music, dancing or drama as well as those with years of tuition under their belts,” Kalinda said. “It’s all about having fun and getting into the spirit of performing. “It’s a totally non-competitive environment so students can let loose, express themselves, meet new friends and learn new skills.” Parents will find the camp to be an affordable and enjoyable alternative to vacation care, with discounts available for families registering more than one child. Places are limited so early registration is encouraged. Contact Kalinda Jade Studios on 040 134 336, email kalindajade@yahoo. com or find Kalinda Jade Studios on Facebook.
Incredible as it may seem, these Year 7-10 McCarthy College students are studying up to university level Physics! Terms such as galaxy, Milky Way, globular clusters and solar system are bandied around with ease by young gifted and talented students. Professor Fred Watson, Australia’s top astronomer needs to watch out, several junior astronomers want his job! NASA has a rival in these enthusiastic young Australians. ‘NASA should get out of our space’, quipped one young student. Space to Grow is an exciting $2.4M science education initiative designed to engage students in science through the study of physics, mathematics, computer studies and astronomy. McCarthy College students have adopted this technologyfocused novel learning and teaching program with great excitement. When asked why they enjoy Space to Grow students respond with fun, entertaining, independent study, being focused on learning, challenging, exciting and, uncovering the mysterious features of the universe. You never know, one day the professional Faulkes astronomers on Maui might be told that a Year 7 McCarthy Catholic College student, via internet, is controlling their $30M telescope!!

Wow, what a fantastic response we had to our Open Day on Saturday 18th August. Thank you so much for everyone who attended on the day and braved the windy weather. Dr Katrina Warren, Kelly Gill and the 4 Wonderdogs were fabulous. How nice was it to see the Wonderdogs keen to show off their tricks for us! Did you see Flynn weave through the peoples legs? Did you see Willow take a bow? How about Jordie pushing the young pup Trick around in the toy car? Did you see Jinx add up 2 numbers and bark the answer? Dr Katrina Warren is warm hearted and a genuinely nice person. She gave so much advice on training dogs and talked about her life experiences. We had a special VIP meeting with our top 40 clients in our waiting room with Dr Katrina Warren and the Wonderdogs, where they had a private trick show. The hospital tours were very popular. Jordi showed many people through the hospital and explained all of the different pieces of equipment that we have. We know what we do in our hospital and a hospital tour is a great way for you to see what goes on behind our doors. Dr Katrina Warren judged the competitions and the winners received a large bag full of goodies kindly donated by Pets Charming, Fluffy and Knuckles, Merial, Hills, Bayer, Pfizer, Dermcare, and Value Plus. The winners of the dog competitions and the lucky door prize are listed below: • Lucky door prize won by Bella • Most like their owner – 1st place : ‘Jed’– Husky, tuxedo • Best trick – 1st place: ‘Kobi’ german shorthaired pointer, bow and sit • Best dressed – First place : ‘Bailey’, golden retriever, sheriff
Independents Offer Liberal Solution North Ward Liberal Councillor, Ross Fowler, today confirmed independent liberal aligned teams would contest all three wards at the 8 September Penrith City Council elections offering local residents real solutions for local issues “We have seen and heard first hand the Labor win at all costs mentality when it comes to elections,” Ross Fowler said. “Promise one thing and then deliver a Carbon Tax is the best example I can suggest to voters when they are considering how to cast their vote,” Ross added. Tricia Hitchen echoed those comments in declaring more local jobs should be a priority for the newly elected Councillors. “A large number of local mums and dads are forced through necessity rather than choice to work outside of the local government area. “As a regional city it is very important the Council identify create more local jobs and make it more attractive for big and small business to want to call Penrith home. “Having people working closer to home creates a better community, increases valuable time with family and friends, and has a positive impact on the local economy,” Tricia said. Former local newspaper editor Bernard Bratusa said he had heard it all before when it came to elections. “Council is the foundation stone of every local community and now more than ever we need a local government that will take a strong stance against the Federal Government’s Carbon Tax. “Given the cost of living pressures affecting all of us I’m disappointed with the seeming lack of concern from our Labor lead Council about the impact the Carbon Tax will have on the people of Penrith. “We must have a Council that will push back on the Federal Government’s smoke and mirrors policies, work with the State Coalition Government and the Federal Opposition to overturn the Carbon Tax,” Bernard added. Ross Fowler said, “By electing a Liberal thinking team to Council on September 8 we will fight for issues important to the local community and stop the Labor influences destroying good local government.” Ross Fowler (North Ward) 0419 738 484 Tricia Hitchen (East Ward) 0429 053 200 Bernard Bratusa (South Ward) 0424 510 506 4

Celebrate Spring
Celebrate Spring
SPRING CLEAN Your Body!
Spring is here and with it lots of outdoor activities, including cricket, swimming, bushwalking, barbeques and the beginning of the party season! If we party too hard, and drink too much alcohol and then pop Panadols to alleviate the symptoms of our hangover, this really stresses our liver. As the Chinese say, the liver is the General of the body – it directs so many of our processes, and sad to say, Western society, diet, alcohol, lifestyle and stress, really wreak havoc on our poor old livers. If our liver is sluggish, compromised, congested, then our bodies will have difficulty with the 3D’s: • Digestion • Defaecation • Detoxification In Traditional Chinese Medicine the liver is considered the seat of emotional stress and anger – an unhappy liver makes our muscles very tight, our eyes red, dry and gritty with with dull sclera (whites of our eyes), it also causes us to have weak nails and interupts our ability to have compassion and feel emotions. So, what can be done to improve the health of our liver? 1. Cut down on alcohol Alcohol is a toxic substance that the liver is forced to metabolise. It may cause inflammation, cellular malformation, and scarring, which inhibit liver function and cause potential liver disease. 2. Have liver herbs and nutrients Many herbs protect liver function by stimulating bile flow and help the organ to regenerate itself. Popular herbs for liver support include Milk Thistle, Dandelion root, Licorice and Gentian. 3. Have a Caffeine Break The liver processes caffeine like it does any other toxin. Caffeine forces the liver to release glycogen stores into the blood, and slows the organs ability to detox harmful toxins. 4. Think Green Natural green foods support the liver by: • Reducing acidity and assisting toxin elimination • Strengthening the immune system. • Reducing excess fat and fluid stores. Green foods include sea vegetables, barley grass, green vegetables, green salads, chlorophyll, and spirulina. 5. Get Some Z’s When you close your eyes to go to sleep at night, your brain releases a chemical called Melatonin that helps to regulate your

sleep cycle. Melatonin shares the body’s toxic load with the liver by helping to neutralise free radicals and regenerating the body overall. 6. Avoid Medications When Possible Like other toxins, residues of drugs and medications can build up in the liver and cause toxicity. When possible, and with your doctor’s consent, give your liver a break and avoid pain killers, anti-inflammatories, HRT, antibiotics and the pill. 7. Go Organic Try to buy organic fruit, vegetables and meat when possible. Non-organic products often contain toxic poisons, pesticides, hormones and antibiotics which may all build up and inhibit liver function. 9. Water !Water! Water! Drink at least two litres of filtered water per day to assist the liver (and kidneys) with toxin elimination. Small and frequent sips are best, however, don’t drink a lot of water (especially cold water) with meals as it may dilute the gastric juices in the stomach, inhibiting digestion and increasing the liver’s workload. Michelle can offer lifestyle advice, along with herbs and nutrients which nourish, detox and restore our livers to maximise her patients’ health, wellbeing and vitality. She has a well-appointed new clinic in Glenbrook. Michelle would love the opportunity to help you to be your best, naturally! THIS SPORTING LIFE A Hero’s Welcome Australia’s Olympic athletes have been received as heroes as they took to the streets of central Sydney for their first official welcome home parade. More than 100 Olympians walked from Circular Quay to Town Hall on the afternoon of August 20. Thousands of fans lined George Street to meet the athletes, have their photo taken with them and get a chance to touch their medals. Amoungst the hoards were some very lucky St Finbar’s students, who made the most of a Staff Development Day to head into the city so they could be part of the welcoming committee. Jessica’s cheersquad... Back row: Caitlin Treble, Jessica Fox, Bronte McLean, Cameron Treble & Laura Crambrook. Front Row: Alex Crambrook, Nathan Treble, Bethan Ankers, Madisyn Treble, Ffion Ankers & Declan Ankers.
Calling Future Olympians!!! Australia’s best track and field athletes began their careers at Little Athletics. But Little A’s, as it is affectionately called by those who enjoy it, is not all about winning. It’s about having fun, making friends and getting families involved in healthy activities. The emphasis is placed on participation and personal improvement. It is little surprise then, that the motto of Little Athletics is: “Family, Fun and Fitness”. Each year across NSW, approximately 40,000 boys and girls enjoy the activities that Little Athletics has to offer. Emu Plains Little Athletics club runs competition on Friday evenings at Leonay Oval. Registrations for the forthcoming season will be held at Leonay Sports Club, Leonay Parade on: Wed 5th September - 6pm to 9pm Wed 12th September - 6pm to 9pm. Emu Plains membership numbers average about 350, although in the year of the Sydney Olympics, registration hit a record high of over 700. What will the impact of the London Olympics be?
Glenbrook Little A’s runs it’s competition on Saturday mornings at Glenbrook Oval, on the highway. Registrations at Glenbrook start with Tiny Tots (4yr olds) and goes through to the under seventeen age group. This season GLAC registration days will be held at Glenbrook Oval from 9am to 1pm on Saturday 1st & 15th September. You can also register online at www.glenbrooklac.org/

”On the Pupil Free Day we went to Sydney to see the Welcome Home Parade for the Olympians. We met Jessica Fox and Cameron held her medal. We met Mark Beretta from Channel 7’s Sunrise. 2day FM interviewed us for the Radio and we were on Channel 9. We got blue curly wigs to wear and an Australian Flag and Boxing Kangaroo Flag. We also got some blow up sticks that make lots of noise when you bang them together. We got autographs from Libby Trickett & Brittany Elmslie (Swim), Jessica Fox (Kayak), Liz Cambage (Basketball), Glenn Tuner, Mark Knowles & Casey Eastham (Hockey), Malcolm Page & Mathew Belcher (Sailor), Joshua Jefferis (Gymnastics), Bronwen Knox, Nicola Zagame & Victoria Brown (Water Polo) and Brittany Broben (Diving). Victoria Brown gave Ffion her water bottle and Madi got a signed one from Brittany Broben. We had an awesome, awesome day and we saw lots of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.” – By Beth Ankers, Year 1.

Curiouser & Curiouser
Organic Assemblages by Blackwell, Williamson and Vella On Show now until September 16 James Blackwell, Peter Williamson and Steven Vella use imagination and creativity to transform collected natural materials into wondrously compelling works. A respect for the natural world is combined with an inquisitive eye and results in the creation of highly detailed organic assemblages of remarkable beauty. The three artists transform gathered natural materials into an extraordinary mix of organic and exotic objects that showcase the dynamic relationship between the physical world and its interpretation and use. Each artist is inspired by nature and uses this motivation to investigate the physical and conceptual identity of gardens through ideas of landscape, form and function.
Welcome Dr Lee-Anne Hall Penrith Performing & Visual Arts is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Lee-Anne Hall as the new Director for the Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest. Commencing 10 September, 2012 Dr. Hall comes to the position of Director, following a career in Arts management, curatorial practice and the tertiary education sector. Dr. Lee-Anne Hall looks forward to working in Penrith with PP&VA, the Gallery staff, our audiences and communities, and believes art is an essential part of society in that it gives voice, creates dialogue and exposes the public to fresh ideas; and that the Gallery Director acts as mediator between artist and audience and facilitates this vital discussion.
In League Exhibition On Show now until September 16 A series of Rugby League themed exhibitions – archival team shots, contemporary photographic portraiture and a collection of important cups, trophies and shields, all manifesting aspects of the psychology, emotion and politics of ‘winning’, ‘losing’ and ‘representing’ your team, your nation, your family, your culture.
