Prestigious Moment for McCarthy Last month, McCarthy Catholic College Captains Jordan Chambers and Kimberley Chambers with Assistant Principal Glenn Trefoni enjoyed meeting Prime Minister Tony Abbott at Kirribilli House. Jordan and Kimberley felt privileged to meet their Prime Minister and were surprised and impressed in the personal interest he took in their plans for 2015 and beyond. His words of greeting made a deep impression. “This is not my house, this is the House of the people”. “Tony Abbott made a great speech and was so confident’, stated Jordan and Kimberley. The McCarthy Captains also enjoyed meeting Fiona Scott MP, Member for Lindsay, who was there to welcome and support the visitors. The McCarthy Captains were accompanied by Captains from a range of schools. This was the first occasion a Prime Minister had met with school leaders in this relaxed way. Jordan plans to Students Jordan Chambers and Kimberley Chambers with Assistant Principal Glenn Trefoni study at UNSW and Kimberley at UWS. meeting Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Fiona Scott MP.

FROM THE EDITOR As we enter October, and the end of yet another school term it’s clear the year is flying by! Dare I remind you that Christmas is less than 100 days away? If you’re anything like me, you would agree that it only felt like yesterday when we were enjoying time with friends and family during the Festive season of 2013 and welcoming in 2014. As I write, I am hearing reports of our very own Jessica Fox’s most recent and phenomenal achievement, on being the first female paddler to win the K1/C1 double at a world championship. What a truly magnificent moment for Jessica, her family and her huge following here at home. Congratulations! Plenty of local achievements to read about in this edition, along with lots of things to do and see as we approach McHappy Day, Halloween, Melbourne Cup Day and of course Christmas. There is no doubt that Panthers pride is loud and proud as the local (and extended) community congratulate the Penrith Panthers as they make the top 4 for 2014! 11 years have passed since their last win, have they got what it takes to do it again ? Enjoy your Community News, and always appreciate what you have, before it turns into what you had.

When a Wedding Becomes a Marriage Spring is here and I wonder if you like me have been to a wedding or two. They’re great occasions, not just for the bride and groom getting married, but for family and friends as well. And as great as the day is itself, this is just day one. The starters gun launching them off the blocks. A new family has been formed, with all the possibilities that offers, and challenges as well. That’s why they’re occasions steeped in joy and hope. But not everyone gets married, not everyone stays married. In our community there will always be people who are single, widowed, separated, and divorced. And in my experience, the more profoundly something good in God’s world affects us, the more profoundly it affects us when it goes wrong or ends. So what makes a good marriage? What fulfils the joy and hopes of the wedding day? Commitment. The promises of the wedding service I’m familiar with are not ‘I do love this person’, but ‘I will love this person’. Love isn’t first a feeling word – it’s an action word. Jesus knew it. He was a fan of marriage, even though he was single. In fact, the Bible says He gave us marriage when He made the world as a living, walk in illustration of His love for us. He was so committed to us, He acted to the point of laying down His life so we could have life. Marriages affect us all. Not just our own marriage. They’re a basic building block of our community. So let’s serve one another to work out our commitment in marriage: talking when we need to talk things through; resolving things when we have differences; forgiving when we each get things wrong (and my wife gets plenty of practice at that!); Getting help from friends or relationship counsellors before difficulties become overwhelming. And through it all, may we also experience the joy of marriage.

7 Don’ts When Someone has Died 1. Don’t say things they say in the movies - Like; “Everything happens for a reason”; what possible reason could there be for a child dying? “He’s gone to a better place”, Better than in the arms of a loved one? “It was God’s will”, what god would take a person from their loved ones? 2. Don’t try to fix it, you can’t. Your friend needs to go through their own grief to be able to work out how they will live their lives now. 3. Don’t say, “If you need anything just call”. They don’t know what they need, they’re numb and in a state of shock. Look for what needs doing and help with that. It may be help with the ironing, dinner, and other everyday things. 4. Don’t say, “You’ll get over it with time” or “Time heals everything”. They’re in a fragile state and don’t need to be forced to feel or do anything they don’t want to. Each person’s experience of grief is unique. 5. Don’t say, “I know how you feel”. You have experienced your grief, it isn’t the same feeling as your friend’s grief. 6. Don’t think you can hurt them any more than they are already, by saying their loved ones name. Speaking their name helps things feel real. 7. Don’t avoid your friend. They need you, even if you don’t say anything, just listen. Remember everyone’s grief is unique. Your relationships may change through grief but in the end your ongoing support and friendship will be appreciated.

Council Closes Emu Plains Branch Library Penrith Council will close Emu Plains branch library. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said long term analysis showed that while other library services and branches across the City continue to show growing patronage, the Emu Plains branch was under used. “About 95 per cent of Emu Plains residents that use the Emu Plains library service, borrow and return books at Penrith, Councillor Fowler said. “The service offered by Emu Plains simply has become a duplication of services provided at Penrith. “We are a growing city and there has been a corresponding growth in demand for all of Council’s services, including library services. The Council needs to use its finite resources where they are most needed. “We have consulted closely with the users of the Emu Plains branch to find out if other services including the Penrith branch, downloadable material and our home delivery service better meet their needs and the vast majority of users have said yes. Analysis of borrowings, returns and library usage of Emu Plains residents showed: * More than 90 per cent joined, visit, borrow and return at Penrith branch. * Each loan at Emu Plains costs Council $29.50, compared to $8.51 at Penrith A survey of all the Emu Plains users who have borrowed at least 12 items in the past year showed: * 72% visit less than once a month * 95% used other branches and would continue to use them upon closure of Emu Plains Council will ensure Emu Plains residents continue to have alternative access to the City’s library services. The collections and resources including staff will be distributed to other library branches to boost their collections and choice.

What happens when you hear this devastating news? Your whole world is shaken to the core. There is fear and trepidation. What you want then is re-assurance, hope of recovery, quality of life, emotional and physical support, a future. Of course you will work with your doctor, your specialist, your oncologist and you will do all they advise you to do, whether that be radiation-therapy or chemotherapy. Let me share with you a brief story of my mother who was diagnosed with aggressive life-threatening cancer over a year ago. I have walked through this deep valley with my mother. As a health-professional I was fearful too, and felt ill-equipped to help her. I wanted to become more empowered, to learn everything I could. I went overseas to Japan to learn natural oncology support. I found out about powerful super-nutrients and protocols that do not contra-indicate professional medical intervention. These nutrients are designed to support a person whilst having their conventional therapies. They are evidencebased, highly researched and used in over 40 countries overseas to bring quality of life and to improve the effectiveness of chemotherapeutics and cancer treatments. I can advise and educate a person living with cancer on the optimum nutritional requirements and other lifestyle interventions for their particular cancer. My mother is alive and well and powering on with new life and confidence. I can’t guarantee outcomes but I will absolutely do all that I can to help you. Every patient is unique. I also work with Blue Mountains Cancer Help www. cancerhelp.net.au as one of their accredited therapists. They are a wonderful organisation offering support and information for Blue Mountains residents affected by cancer. Helping people with cancer is my passion. I would consider it a privilege to partner with you and your doctors to bring you the best possible outcome. I welcome your enquiry. Call me on 0414 944 112 or 4739 9947 or email me m.au. naturopath@michellebeech.com.au.

Bucket Brigade on McHappy Day

Are you a Local Hero?

McHappy Day® is coming up fast and Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC®) is calling on Emu and Leonay community groups to get behind the big day by forming a ‘Bucket Brigade’ on Saturday 18th October, to help raise more than $3 million for the charity. The event will take place at McDonald’s Emu Plains and local groups including local businesses, dance groups, the fire brigade and ambulance services, are encouraged to get involved by volunteering their time to help collect donations in fundraising buckets at their local restaurant on the day. This year’s fundraising target equates to over 23,000 nights’ accommodation in a Ronald McDonald House for families with seriously ill children. Funds raised on the day will go towards a range of RMHC programs including Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Rooms, the Ronald McDonald Learning Program and Ronald McDonald Family Retreats Program. “One in eight people either have been or know someone who has been affected by childhood illness so I am sure there are people in the local community who can relate to the heartache and stress of having a child with a serious illness,” said Kerry Gordon, licensee, McDonald’s Emu Plains. “The Bucket Brigades are a simple and easy way for people in the community to get involved and help families with seriously ill children. We are very passionate about reaching our target of $3 million this year.” There are currently 14 Ronald McDonald Houses in Australia but sadly hundreds of families are turned away each month as there is a shortage of rooms to accommodate them all. All funds raised on McHappy Day goes directly to RMHC, and are used to help these Houses expand in order to help more families remain close during challenging times. A number of Australian celebrities will be doing their bit for McHappy Day to help raise awareness and funds across Australia. Why not join them? To form a ‘Bucket Brigade’ or get involved at your local McDonald’s please contact the McHappy Day Project Office on mchappyday@ppr.com.au.

If you admire someone for making a difference to the Penrith community, then give them the recognition they deserve and nominate them for a 2015 Australia Day Award. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said Penrith City Council’s annual Australia Day Awards are the perfect occasion to honour the everyday heroes whose outstanding contributions might otherwise go unrecognised. “These awards allow Council to showcase Penrith residents as model Australians and highlight their stories and efforts to help others,” he said. To receive this prestigious honour, winners demonstrate excellence in their field and are considered inspirational role models for the community. The Australia Day Awards will highlight excellence across categories including: Citizen of the Year, Young citizen of the Year (16-25 years), Sportsperson of the Year and Local Appreciation Awards (for community service). All nominees are considered for the Penrith Citizen of the Year Award and Penrith’s Local Hero Award.

Visit penrithcity.nsw.gov. au/ausday and send us your nomination before 14 November 2014.

Do you Have a Child who has Difficulty Calming Him or Herself? One of my boys would get very angry at times and needed some support to calm himself. I was concerned that if he didn’t learn the skills to calm himself, he would think that anger was an appropriate means of expressing himself. I didn’t want him taking his anger into adolescence and beyond. The following strategies are from the Second Step programme which I have taught in primary school. In the programme, children are told that they should do some deep breathing in situations where they find they are having strong feelings, such as being overexcited, angry, or upset. We tell kids that it’s ok to have strong feelings, but doing the first thing that comes into your head (like hitting or screaming at the other person) will not solve the problem. When we have strong feelings it can be hard to think about what to do. Calming down helps us to think again. It’s easier to calm down if we try as soon as we start to have a strong feeling. You can use ways to calm down in the classroom, at home, and in the playground. It also helps to get children to identify where they feel their anger (for example, tummy, head, hands). Support the child to locate where he or she feels the feeling (anger, sadness, distress, overexcited, etc) in his or her body. The answers I have heard from kids range from the feet (to run), the fists (to get ready to fight), the heart, the tummy, and the head. This one is for young children, up to 6 years of age. Put your hand on your tummy to check out how you are feeling, and l. Say “calm down” to yourself, using a slow voice 2. Take three deep belly breaths 3. Count to 4 slowly Your tummy is right where your belly button is. Putting your hand there helps you check in with how you’re feeling. It also makes sure you do the right kind of breathing to help calm down. The wrong way to do belly breathing is to puff up your chest, tense your muscles, take a noisy gasp of air, and hold your breath. The right way to do belly breathing, is to take a breath that makes your tummy move out when you breathe in, and in when you breathe out. Breathe in slowly through your nose and out through your mouth. It should be so quiet that you can’t hear it. It’s a good technique for parents to use as well! Many parents reported that their young children in the programme would coach them to do these things when they were showing signs of getting angry. Next month I’ll give you the techniques for children older than 6 years of age.

The very first experience that kids have with the wonderful world of radio is based on whatever their parents listen to. We all have childhood memories of Saturday afternoon football, talk back, radio cereals and golden oldies. Today however kids are exposed to so much more including bad language, offensive songs and content, too much advertising and talk. The Target Radio Network is about to change how kids interact with radio forever. ForKidz.com.au is here. From the Wiggles to Hi5, Play School to old fashion favourites like Bananas in Pyjamas and the best of Disney, For Kidz Radio will play the music kids love. What’s more it’s direct to you by way of the world wide web, along with a smart phone and tablet app. Which is ready to be downloaded through the app store or google play. Making it available anywhere, anytime and for parents, giving you control of what your children listen to and when they tune in. Available at www.targetradionetwork.com.au, Google Pl;ay or The App Store.

Four Simple Steps To Staying Safer This Season Tips To Help Your Family Family Become Become S wim S eason R eady Your Swim Season Ready ‘Is your family swim season ready? ’If the answer is less than ‘yes’, the consequences could be dire. “Aussies simply love the water. Yet sadly, accidental childhood drowning claims the greatest number of young lives than any other trauma, said Keryn Daley, from Dive In Swim Academy, in Penrith. In 2012/2013, 40 children between the ages of zero and 14, drowned in Australian waterways. But not all accidents prove fatal; one quarter of children admitted to hospital following a non-fatal drowning, will be left with a brain injury resulting in lifelong disabilities. However, industry experts, Swim Australia - the leaders in learn-to-swim and water safety - insist, drowning can potentially be prevented, by actively applying four simple steps: the EnergyAustralia SwimSAFER ‘Layers of Protection’. “Applied together, each layer helps supports the other. If one layer fails, the remaining active layers will ultimately kick in, potentially helping to save that child’s life, said Swim Australia CEO, Ross Gage.

1. Be Aware: Don’t let the kids out of your sight. 2. Be Secure: Keep fences and gates locked up tight. 3. Be Confident: Learn to Swim, and how to get to safety. 4. Be Prepared: Always have a plan in case of emergency. “Help prevent drowning any time, any where, any season by enrolling your kids in year round swimming lessons, never let them out of your sight when in or around water, and always practice the house rules: ‘I never go swimming without an adult, concluded, Ms Daley.

HEALTH MATTERS Article by: Rhonda Rolfe Harmonising Health Ph: 0430 047 421 E: rhonda@harmonisinghealth.com.au W: www.harmonisinghealth.com.au

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis Ever thought about having a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis done? Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis is a non-invasive health screening tool for measuring your body’s mineral status. The data can highlight potential health problems and help you to treat them through a nutritional program designed to meet your individual needs. A hair mineral analysis is a safe, non-invasive pathology test which can give you valuable health information often not revealed in a blood or urine test. It is an excellent way of identifying potential nutrient mineral deficiencies and excesses as well as being an indicator of toxic mineral exposure. Mineral imbalances can have several causes - improper eating habits, stress, medications, pollution, genetic and individual factors and even nutritional supplements. Mineral imbalances can also be the underlying cause of many illnesses, as can toxic metal exposure. They can cause arthritis, elevated blood pressure, foggy thinking, behavioural problems, hormonal imbalances, skin problems and hair loss, just to mention a few. It is suitable for people of all ages, and may just be the missing link you have been searching for. When combined with a blood or urine test, it can give a very comprehensive evaluation of your overall health. Talk to your natural therapist at your next visit to determine whether a HTMA might be beneficial for you.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith welcomes the news that primary school children throughout the Penrith Electorate are having fun learning about the importance of healthy eating and staying hydrated as part of the ‘Crunch&Sip’ program. Stuart Ayres joined primary school children in Parliament to take part in a special demonstration of the ‘Crunch&Sip’ program, which aims to build healthy eating habits into the daily routine of primary school students. Stuart Ayres said the program not only helped to boost the fruit, vegetable and water intake of school students, but also serves to improve concentration and classroom performance of those students taking part. “The ‘Crunch&Sip’ program helps to promote the importance of healthy food options among primary school students, with teachers reporting that it is a great practical way to incorporate this message into the school day,” Stuart Ayres said. “There has been a significant increase in the proportion of children 2-15 years who consumed the recommended daily vegetable intake from 13.0% in 2001 to 43.4% in 2012. But more needs to be done. “Research shows that teaching kids positive eating behaviours during childhood can set them up with healthy eating habits for life, which leads to better health outcomes in the long run.” The Healthy Children Initiative, which includes Crunch & Sip, is a key initiative of the NSW Government’s Healthy Eating Active Living Strategy (2013-2018) which provides a comprehensive approach to reducing overweight and obesity in NSW”. The ‘Crunch&Sip’ program is currently part of the daily classroom routine in 1814 primary schools across NSW, including schools from across the Penrith Electorate: • Lapstone Public, St Finbars Primary, Our Lady of the Way Primary, Kingswood Public, Jamisontown Public, Leonay Public, Samuel Terry Public, York Public, Kingswood South Public, Penrith Public, Emu Heights Public, Henry Fulton Public, Emu Plains Public “It’s great to see so many local schools getting on board with the ‘Crunch&Sip’ program and providing young kids with a practical way to learn about the importance of eating healthy food and drinking plenty of water,” Stuart Ayres said. For more information on the Healthy Eating Active Living programs visit: http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/obesity/Pages/ healthy-eating-active-living.aspx.

MONEY MATTERS With Alex McKenzie - Future Financial Services Ph: 0414 330 651 E: info@futurefinancialservices.com.au

Changes to Centrelink Income Test for Age Pension As of January 1st 2015 the way allocated pensions (also known as account based pensions) are treated by Centrelink is set to change, and unfortunately not favourably for pensioners. Currently money invested in an allocated pension is treated concessionally. In simple terms, the funds invested at the beginning of the investment are divided by the clients life expectancy, this amount, known as the deductible amount, is not counted to the income test. So if a 65 yo male invested $200,000 into an allocated pension, his life expectancy would be 18.54 and his deductible amount would be $10,787. In this scenario the first $10,787 of income drawn from the allocated pension is not counted for Centrelink income test purposes ie. If $15,000 is drawn from the allocated pension only $4,213 is considered income by Centrelink. As of January 1st 2015 funds invested in accounts based pension will be treated like all other investment assets and will be subject to Deeming rates. Currently investment assets are deemed at 2% for the first $46,600 and 3.5% for any additional investment assets. In the above example the assessable income for Centrelink would be $6301. The current deeming rates are at a historical low, and in the past have been considerably higher, if deeming rates increase, which is likely, the new treatment will further disadvantage most pensioners. Those with higher balances are the most disadvantaged, especially if they are drawing minimal pensions, but all people

who are hoping to receive Centrelink pensions should review their retirement plan. There are grandfathering provisions that see all allocated pensions commenced before the end of this calendar year treated under the current more favourable income test, therefore it is advisable for anyone looking to retire in the near future to seek advice in relation to allocated pensions as soon as possible. Please contact Future Financial Services if you have any queries in relation to the new legislation or any other financial planning matter.

PAWS A WHILE With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027

Growth of the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital Since purchasing the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 4.5 years ago, Camille and the team have worked steadily to grow the business. Starting off with 1 veterinarian and 4 nurses, Camille now employs 3 veterinarians (with a current advertisement for a 4th veterinarian), 6 fully qualified veterinary nurses, a Practice Manager, 2 trainee veterinary nurses and a kennel hand. Massive growth in 4.5 years from 5 staff to 13 staff! One of the unexpected bonuses of owning a business was creating 8 new local jobs! Each new team member provides a new skill set and knowledge base which we use to provide better care for your pets. New Practice Manager – Renai Renai has grown up in the Penrith area and has seen many changes over the years. After managing a local business for 12 years, Renai was delighted to combine her three greatest passions together: managing a business, customer service and her love for animals. Renai joined the team in August 2014 where she was warmly welcomed by all. Renai has 3 furbabies including: Tasha (Labrador x Staffy), Ally (Golden Labrador) and Cooper (a naughty young learning Labrador). Renai adores her pets and spends every spare minute with them, when she is not busy being a wife and mum to 4 adult children. Renai enjoys nothing more than spending time with her family, cooking, renovating and roadtrips. “I feel very fortunate to be a part of the team here at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. New Trainee Veterinary Nurse – Lizzie Lizzie completed work experience at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in June 2012. Lizzie then joined our team as a Kennel Hand

in June 2013. Lizzie is in the process of completing her Certificate II in Animal Science at TAFE, as well as her Higher School Certificate. She enjoys everything about being a Kennel Hand, learning lots and getting a head start on some nurse duties, as she wishes to go on to study Veterinary Nursing at TAFE. Lizzie has had many animals during her life time, at the moment she has two cats (Moo Cow and Missy), and a Labrador cross (Sonny). “After a week of work experience, I never thought only a year later would I be working here at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, but I wouldn’t work anywhere else! Everyone here is always willing to help out and share their knowledge where ever possible. Lizzie was promoted to Trainee Veterinary Nurse in September 2014. New Trainee Veterinary Nurse – Jemma As a lifelong animal lover, Veterinary Nursing was an obvious career choice for Jemma, who joined the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in September 2014. Having completed the Certificate II in Animal Studies in 2013, Jemma is currently completing her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing at Richmond TAFE. Growing up on acreage, Jemma was surrounded by many dogs and horses, and was involved in the local Pony Club. Jemma continues to enjoy spending time with her 5 beautiful dogs, along with horseriding, cooking and spending time with family and friends. Jemma is grateful for the opportunity to work with the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and looks forward to increasing her skills in all areas of veterinary nursing. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.
