Pete’s Great Shave Peter Davies from Wallacia organised a fantastic event to raise funds for the Cancer Council. He tells us “The day started great with the Band ‘The Sick Zebra’s’ donating their time and effort for the day with some really great music. Strawb (AKA Andy Hart) the lead singer (who has cancer and why this all came about) did very well but was exhausted at days end. Strawb, was the first up to shave his beard which he has had since 1978 (chemo fixed the hair already) Our mate “O” Dave Boland was the next up after we put pressure on him to get his 27cm pony taken off. Whilst in the chair I yelled “$200 for his scalp” and it was gone!! He said something but we were all laughing too much. But he was really cool with it, I’m assured I will pay for it in someway. Robbo tried to get “Riff Raff” (Luke O’Connor) to lose his pony (32cms) but said you can’t raise the money! Robbo said how much? $400 was the number and the rest is history. Then it was my turn. Yep, it took a while with two hairdresser doing the deed. My daughter Crystal cried and wanted it put back on (smart girl) but she is getting use to it. We raised $2,580 on the

day. And the grand total raised was $6,380.00 for the Cancer Council For my wife Trish a very different present for her birthday (on the same day) who had not seen my head naked!! With a very big turn out, the day was great and fun was had by all. A special thanks goes to my wife Trish, Belinda (1 (Trish’s Boss) Belinda (2 co worker) Kim, Rachael and Lauren from Hair-

RFS Program to Assist Vulnerable Residents

With a combined effort from Wollondilly Shire Council and manager Glenn McArthur, Warragamba swimming pool now has a new $8000 shade sail, 12 metres by 10metres, ideal now for families and schools. The pool is heated, has plenty of shaded parking and picnic areas with a BBQ for hire. The toddler pool is fully fenced and shaded. There are private and group swim-

The AIDER program is a NSW Rural Fire Service initiative that assists residents who may be more vulnerable than others during the bush fire season. The program assists residents who live on bush fire prone land, who are elderly, have a disability or who are infirmed, by carrying out fire hazard reduction work. Wollondilly has many bush fire prone regions and it is important for residents who require this kind of assistance to be aware of this Program and contact the RFS.

The RFS has a team of skilled mitigation crews that carry out work such as clearing out gutters, thinning vegetation, removing tree debris and trimming and removing branches at no cost for eligible residents. Mayor for Wollondilly, Cr Col Mitchell agrees that this service is very beneficial to Wollondilly. He said “We have a lot of areas in Wollondilly that are prone to bush fires and having assistance for our most vulnerable residents is great. I congratulate the NSW Rural Fire Service on this initiative and I encourage residents to utilise this free service if they are entitled too. ” For details about eligibility about the AIDER program go to www.rfs. nsw.gov.au or call 1800 679 737

Why does God allow Disaster? The horror of the recent earthquake in Haiti has recently been filling our living rooms. The one year anniversary of the Victorian bushfires has just passed. Our community psyche has been shaped by the Boxing Day Tsunami and September 11. So we must ask the question, ‘Why does God allow such suffering?’ For some this question is ridiculous. Surely this event tells us that there is no God. Or, if there is a god, that God is well meaning but impotent, or worse, powerful but evil. Is God the real terrorist? Some well meaning Christians, trying to exonerate God, might say that disaster comes from the devil, not God. Or it is mother nature, not God. But none of these responses represent the bible’s approach to disaster. God says, ‘I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the Lord, do all these things’ (Isaiah 45:7 NIV). When told about deaths from a brutal attack, Jesus answered: “Do you think that those Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died

when the tower in Siloam fell on them - do you think they were more guilt than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” (Luke 13:1-5 NIV) Jesus’ response to these disasters prompts three comments. First, Jesus makes it clear that those who suffered are no worse than we who continue to live. We must not think ourselves morally superior because we have survived. We might thank God that he spared us. But there is nothing about us that deserves sparing. Second, Jesus simply assumes that all people deserve to die. Those who die are no worse than those who live. Elsewhere in the bible we read ‘the wages of sin is death’ (Romans 6:23). All people die because all people sin (Romans 3:10-12; 5:12). Therefore, the death that one way or another comes to each of us is deserved. God is therefore not unjust in sending the disaster. He simply moves forward the judgment that each of us deserves. We think we deserve the peace and prosperity we enjoy in Australia, rather than seeing this as God’s kindness and patience to us as undeserving, sinful people. Third, Jesus treats disasters as God’s urgent demand for us to repent

-- to turn back to God from our sin, our rebellion against God and our desire to run life our own way without God. God kindly warns those of us who survive that his judgment on sin will come also on us, just as it has come on those who died (and who are no worse than us). The sensible response for us is then to turn ot God, to ask for the forgiveness that he is more than ready to give us, and to change our thinking about God and his son Jesus Christ. The bible assures us that we will receive God’s forgiveness when we return to him, for Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’ (1 Timothy 1:15).

Local Developments Glenmore Heritage Golf club with Innovation Planning Australia Pty Ltd have submitted plans to Penrith Council to build 27 houses in a 69 hectare eco-village style residential development. There will be a new ring road just inside the existing entry on Mulgoa Road and the golf course will be redesigned to accommodate the development. The application states that the development will provide funds for the restoration of the existing heritage building and ensure the ongoing of the golf course. Innovation Planning Australia Pty Ltd have also put in an application to build 27 homes around 2 cul-de-sacs on Allan Road in Mulgoa. Penrith Golf Club has

put forward a concept proposal for the development of four multi story apartment buildings on land next to the existing clubhouse for 120 - 150 self contained dwellings for senior housing. The manager Brendon Kop says, “the golf club needs to create a sustainable financial future for the club” The proposed redevelopment will involve some adjustment to the existing golf course layout and provide a new and improved club with better facilities. Penrith Council has agreed in principal that the land can be developed but has stated that it should not be visible from the Northern Road with viewlines to the Blue Mountains escarpment preserved and designed in a way that maintains the rural character of The Northern Road.

Draft Wollondilly Youth Area Action Plan The Draft Wollondilly Youth Area Action Plan is on exhibition from 18 January to 18 April 2010. Wollondilly Shire Council is seeking feedback and comments during this period. Young people and community members are encouraged to visit Council’s website and review the document. The Draft Wollondilly Youth Area Action Plan draws on the skills and knowledge of the Wollondilly community. The plan aims to identify ways in which the community and Council can

work together on making things better for young people in Wollondilly. We know that growing up in Wollondilly is significantly different to growing up in more urbanised communities, challenges facing young people from Wollondilly are fundamentally different to those facing young people from other local government areas. The Draft Wollondilly Youth Area Action Plan sets the key areas in which Council, in partnership with the community, wants to improve and make things better for young people in Wollondilly. The Plan incorporates strategies to build on what already exists to make Wollondilly an even better place for young people to live. Warragamba Girl Guides Girl Guides is a great organisation for girls who love making friends, having fun and developing new skills. The Warragamba Girl Guides have vacancies for girls aged 7 to 15. They meet in the Guide hall on Monday or Wednesday evenings and enjoy activities and games which are fun but also teach leadership, teamwork, decision making, a respect for the environment, communication skills and a sense of community. Outdoor activities are an important part of the Australian Guide programme and the girls have had the opportunity to go camping, sailing, horse riding, rock climbing, flying, swimming, surfing, ice skating as well as campfire cooking and gadget making. The new Southern Cross Ranger unit for girls aged 15 - 18 years old has 4 girls working on their Queen’s Guide award and meets fortnightly. 2010 is the ‘Year of The Guide’ celebrating 100 years of Guiding with some great events planned so this is a great time to get involved and help local girls grow into responsible young women.

World Thinking Day on February 22 is an annual event which celebrates the joint birthdays of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell. “World Thinking Day is an important day for Guides as we reflect on what we can do make a difference to the lives of others. As part of this event, Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 145 countries are encouraged to think and learn more about extreme poverty and hunger and Guiding in other countries,” said Lynne Price, Chief Commissioner, Girl Guides Australia. Warragamba Girl Guides will commemorate Thinking Day with a fun and educational day in the Region Hall in Emu Plains. Warragamba Guides need an additional leader for the girls. No experience is necessary as free training is provided. Please phone Margaret for further details: 4773 8974.

Luddenham Public School 150 Years Luddenham Public School will be celebrating its 150th Anniversary in 2010 on the weekend of August 14th and 15th with a dinner and bush dance at Vicary’s Winery on the Saturday night and a fete on the Sunday.

Clean Up Norton’s Basin Norton’s Basin, off Silverdale road, is a beautiful deep waterhole along the Nepean River surrounded by a rocky escarpment. The Basin still has native fish and is popular for swimming, fishing and climbing. Sadly the Basin is filled with rubbish left by people who fail to respect it’s natural beauty and leave it all behind. It is not a national park so rubbish collection does not happen often. Silverdale residents Sandra & Peter Onus hiked to Nortons Basin recently. “It was so beautiful. We swam and spoke to a local fisherman enjoying the sunset but the Basin was filled with litter. Bottles, plastic and cans line the native waterhole and run alongside the walking tracks. We were upset at the pollution so we have registered it as a Clean Up Australia site. Please come and help clean it up. Have a swim afterwards and a sausage sandwich will be provided.”

Sunday 7th March. 8am -3pm

Technology for Seniors Local seniors can learn how to make the most of new communications technology when Warragamba Baptist Church and the Warragamba/Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre join forces to conduct a series of free educational workshops at Warragamba Baptist Church from 4th February for 8 weeks from 2pm-4pm. Another course is planned for April. The workshops have been made possible by a grant given by Telstra Connected SeniorsÒ Program. Allan Bolas from Warragamba Baptist Church said the workshops will open new doors of communication for Seniors. The workshops help to overcome preconceived fears seniors may have with using technology. As a result, we hope their self-esteem and confidence will rise, allowing them to catch up and communicate with family and friends in the younger generations. The Telstra Connected SeniorsÒ workshops involve seniors learning specifically tailored technology skills at their own pace in a relaxed, comfortable and friendly environment. The workshops teach a wide range of benefits such as communicating via SMS or the internet with distant family and friends, researching information and hobbies, having emergency numbers preset into their mobile phones and paying bills online. For further details about the Warragamba Seniors Connect Ò Workshops contact Allan Bolas on 47333637 or 0419643310 or fambol@tpg.com.au For further details about the program visit www.telstraseniors.com.au

Bottled Water

Alliance are: • Australia’s annual use of bottled water generates more than 60,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions – the same amount that 13,000 cars generate over the course of a year. • 50 million litres of oil is used in the manufacture and distribution of bottled water in Australia annually. • Australia only recycles 36 % of recyclable plastic water bottles per year. • Australians spend more than half a billion dollars on bottled water per annum. Communities in villages such as Bundanoon in the Southern Highlands have successfully banned the sale of bottled water earlier this year but similar bans at a Shire level are just impractical and to some, unnecessary. Wollondilly Shire Council is concerned about the impacts of bottled water, in particular the effects it has

If you are over 40 you probably remember when the only bottled water available was imported, in glass, expensive and had a French sounding name, but if you are younger than that, then cheap plastic bottled water has been available for most of your life, but at a larger cost than just dollars. The use of bottled water has recently drawn national attention for many reasons, mainly due to its perceived impacts on the environment. These impacts range from the production side of water bottling which draws water from natural sources and produces carbon through its bottling and distribution, through to the waste produced by empty bottles which mostly end up in landfill. Some sobering statistics regarding bottled water from the Bottled Water

on being a Sustainable Wollondilly, so Council wishes to encourage residents to think twice before buying bottled water. Ask yourself, can I afford it, what will I do with the empty, how far has it come, is it better tasting than tap water and is that label really such a status symbol? Sydney’s tap water is known for its high quality and affordability, it produces minimal carbon emissions to deliver and does not produce package waste so consider this alternative next time you need a drink. Of course there are reasons for having water in bottles. These include use at sporting and other leisure activities, for hydration during hot weather and for convenience but all of these reasons can be fulfilled by refilling bottles and chilling them rather than buying new ones. So the message from Council is clear “Think before choosing your drink”.
