Woolworths Helps St Finbar's Primary School Glenbrook Take The Lead On Sustainability Local schools including St Finbar's Primary School Glenbrook are growing the next generation of environmental champions after being named a recipient in the latest round awarded up to $1,000 each from the 2022 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants. Funds received from the grants will allow primary schools and early learning centres to develop projects focusing on sustainable food production, improving waste management practices, or enhancing native habitats. Woolworths and Landcare Australia are highlighting the importance of taking action now to create a better, more sustainable future, by driving education and awareness among our next generation of eco warriors. Woolworths Store Manager, David Crellin said: “We are committed to helping our communities grow their sustainable practices for a better, greener tomorrow. Enabling our schools to create practical hands-on teaching activities and programs through our grants is just one way we are helping to drive long lasting sustainable education. This year’s grant recipients include: • St Finbar's Primary School Glenbrook • Warrimoo Public School View a complete interactive map of successful schools by visiting www. juniorlandcare.org.au/woolworthsgrants/ map. “The Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants help local schools develop initiatives such as REDcycling, growing fruit and veg, Bush Tucker gardens, and composting. “Additionally, with 1.3 billion tonnes of all food produced each year being lost or wasted, it is more important than ever that schools have access to fund the materials, installation and construction required to develop these types of programs.” This is the fourth round of funding to date given out as part of the Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants program, with over $1 million being awarded to more than 1,054 primary schools and early learning centres across Australia. Landcare Australia CEO, Dr Shane Norrish said: “The core goal of programs like the Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants is to educate students on how to care for their environment. The grant will play a vital role in helping students grow their skills and become the next generation of environmental champions.” r Article: Woolworths

Representative School Sport Fees Covered For NSW Students
Student access to representative school sport will be increased through a $1.2 million investment to fund local and state sports association affiliation fees in 2022 for every student in NSW public schools. Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade, Minister for Tourism and Sport and Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the move would both reduce the financial burden on families and the administrative burden on schools. A 2021 Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne study showed half of Australian children had participated in less organised sport and other physical activities since COVID-19, with one in three doing a lot less or no sport. Cost was one of the main reasons cited by parents for failing to re-engage with sport, Mr Ayres said. “By directly funding the sports associations we are making access to sport more equitable and inclusive, taking away cost as an obstacle for families,” Mr Ayres said. Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said there was a significant administrative burden associated with collecting and handling these affiliation fees, as schools collected the funds from parents/carers and then reallocated the funds to the associations. “Under the new arrangement, students at smaller schools and schools for specific purposes that traditionally did not take part in representative sport due to the administrative burden will now able to experience the chance to play for their schools and regions,” Ms Mitchell said. “These changes align with our commitment under the Quality Time Action Plan to cut red tape in schools by 20% in low-value administrative tasks by the end of 2022.” The Representative School Sport Pathway provides students access to representative pathways in a range of sports. Schools affiliate with their local and state sports associations and are charged fees to cover costs for the delivery of the pathway. Ms Mitchell said the link between student wellbeing, academic success and physical activity was well known, and the department would continue to promote high-quality sport and physical activity opportunities for students. “We want to return to pre-COVID levels of participation and uptake of sport and physical activity at school, at home and in the wider community, and this funding injection is one way we can help make that a reality.”

Council To Waive Sportsground Hire Fees For Winter Season Penrith City Council understands the challenges sporting clubs across the City are facing this winter season and will show its support by waiving sportsground hire fees for use of natural grass fields. The ongoing rainfall has disrupted the start of the 2022 winter season, with some clubs having their games postponed due to the poor weather conditions while others are yet to take the field as a result of ground closures. This move is set to benefit more than 60 local sporting clubs and associations from 13 different sporting codes who have registered for the winter 2022 season. Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said she hopes Council’s decision to waive sportsground hire fees for the current sporting season will offer some financial reprieve during a frustrating time for the community. “We know that after two years of disruptions from the pandemic, our City’s club representatives and players were eager to get outdoors again but unfortunately it has been a rough start to the season due to issues beyond our control,” Cr Hitchen said. “While we are getting to as many grass fields as we can as fast as we can, the poor weather conditions have saturated many grounds making it impossible for our equipment to be safely placed on fields," she said. "Whilst every effort is being made to restore the condition of our sportsgrounds to allow them to be playable and safe, the surface at some grounds is still too wet. “We thank our community for being patient and we hope that by waiving these fees it’s one less stress for our clubs and associations to think about as they continue to reschedule fixtures and plan for their next playable games.” The latest decision to waive sportsground hire fees follows Council’s well-received move to allow free use of the City’s sportsgrounds in the 2020 and 2021 winter seasons, as well as the 20202021 summer season, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Weather permitting, Council continues to progress multiple projects at sportsgrounds, open spaces, playspaces and recreation areas as part of its vision for improved opportunities across the LGA, which were identified in our Sport and Recreation Strategy. Bringing Back Aerobics Leg warmers, leotards, sweatbands and 80’s music. Aerobics is making a comeback and local Rebecca Hooley is on a quest to make this happen! Rebecca, who has worked in the fitness industry for over a decade, would love to see the once-loved exercise routine enjoyed by all. “I’m currently on a mission to bring aerobics back to the fitness scene. I grew up doing my mum’s workout videos and Aerobics Oz Style before school” she smiled. “After working in a number of gyms, I started to see fitness change to hardcore structured training and the crazy, free, fun aerobic workouts that everybody can do was missing” continued Rebecca. Aerobic classes combine dance and toning for a full body workout. Throw in some silliness and retro music and you have the recipe for fun. “It’s carefree, and hysterical! Most of the time, you are laughing and having fun that you forget you are even working out and who doesn’t want that? It’s a chance to just go back to a simpler time and a simpler workout. Aerobics is not structured, laboured, or boring. It’s old school training with all the same benefits of todays ‘new’ workout trends” Rebecca explained. Aerobics promotes weight loss, strength building, increases stamina and fitness, reduces health risks, strengthens the heart and can be a great boost for your mood. “Each class can be modified to low impact or ramped up to really get the heart racing. We sweat a lot, which explains the sweatbands” she ended. For more on Rebecca and her aerobics classes, search Rewind Fitness on Facebook. Amelia Keeps Them Smiling 2021 was a big year for Amelia McInerney, with the children’s book author releasing three picture books. She has followed this up with one of the books, Who Fed Zed? recently shortlisted for Book of the Year with Speech Pathology Australia. The former Blaxland resident released Who Fed Zed? (published by Allen and Unwin), My Bird, Bertie and Mary Had a Little Lamb- What REALLY Happened (both published by Scholastic Australia) last year. Who Fed Zed? was shortlisted for Book of the Year with Speech Pathology Australia, in the '3 to 5 years' category. This annual award is given to the 'best book for language and literacy development' and books are also judged on their appeal to children. “My first book, The Book Chook, was shortlisted for this award in 2019 and I'm thrilled Who Fed Zed? has now made the list. I'm also excited that the book has been released in the UK” explained Amelia to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. Who Fed Zed? is a zany story about a goldfish called Zed, a flearidden dog called Jed, and a fish-feeding mishap that the kids, Ned, Ted, and Fred uncover. “There's a couple of twists to keep readers on the edge of their seats and Dr. Seuss fans will enjoy that every line of the entire story rhymes with 'Zed', which makes it as fun to read as it was to write! Terrific retro illustrations by Adam Nickel add to the humour” she smiled. Amelia often draws upon inspiration from her own children when writing her books. “Although this book is wacky and fun, it can also be used as a springboard to discuss food allergies and the importance of checking food labels with children. Allergies are so common these days; it was actually my own child's food allergies that inspired me to write this story” she ended. Amelia’s next book is slated for May 2023. v Children's author, Amelia McInerney with her shortlisted funny, rhyming picture book, Who Fed Zed? | Image: Amelia McInerney

How To Give Instructions Your Child Will Follow
Every day, well intentioned parents communicate important messages to their children. The problem is that not all messages are received in ways we anticipate. Communication is a complex process and a skill we often need to work at no matter how old we are. These tips will help you get your message across and enjoy a more stress-free family life. • Gather your child’s full attention: Make sure you are no further than an arm’s distance and address your child by name first. Make sure that they are not doing anything else like playing with a toy or watching TV. • Give instructions about what you want your child to do, rather than what not to do: Think about moving from ‘STOP’ to ‘START’ instructions. For example, instead of saying, “don’t play with the ball inside”, try “please take the ball into the backyard and play outside”. • Be specific about what you expect: Spell out exactly what needs to happen next and avoid judgmental and vague language. For example, instead of saying, “don’t be so lazy”, try “please put your dishes in the sink after you’ve finished eating”. • Always consider age and stage of development: For an instruction to be followed, it must be appropriate to that child’s age and stage. Consider the type and number of words you use. • Break larger tasks into smaller steps: This is especially true of younger children. “Get ready for bed” refers to following a sequence of several steps: pack away your toys, change into your pyjamas, brush your teeth and so on. Think about prompting children by giving one to two steps at a time. • If your child follows an instruction, praise them: When you show children appreciation for what they do right, this reinforces good habits. When instructions are unclear, children (and parents) can easily become overwhelmed and frustrated. When parents use calm, clear and developmentally appropriate instructions, this supports children’s growth and development.

New Multi-Sport Program for Local Kids
A new multi-sports program designed for kids has recently been opened in the local community. Cheeky Monkeyz is a program that is designed for kids to have a go at all the included sports in a 4-week rotation. They currently offer Soccer and also have Rugby, Basketball, Athletics, AFL, Tennis, Softball/Cricket, and Hockey. They do a new sport every 4 weeks, and the best bit is that parents just pay per sport not a full term. The costs are $17.50 (including gst) a lesson for 30 minutes for 2- to 4-year-olds and $19.25 (including gst) a lesson for 45 minutes for 4-year-olds and up. They have just opened in Emu Plains and have Tuesday to Saturday mornings and Tuesday to Thursday afternoons available. Cheeky Monkeyz teach kids from as young as 2 years old, up to around 9 years old. Cheeky Monkeyz was founded by Shaun Farley in 2011, beginning in Brisbane. Moving to Sydney in 2017, it was started soon after in Richmond. “It’s very important for kids to be outside, active and to also socialise with each other. Some of the younger 2-year-olds really haven’t got to experience that with COVID. They learn some key skills in their development like social skills, hand eye co-ordination, self-confidence, listening skills, being active and most of all having fun whilst making friends” said Shaun Farley of Cheeky Monkeyz. “We love our job, because you can see how much the kids and our coaches have lots of fun, engage with each other, and build that bond which is so important these days. It’s really pleasing for us to see kids, who normally wouldn’t do it, come out of their shell, and enjoy the class. Parents love being able to watch their child laugh, have fun and enjoy playing sport” he continued. “We don’t teach them to be champions. We teach them that sport is fun, and with a little bit of practice and guidance, anything is possible” Shaun ended. For more information about Cheeky Monkeyz, find them on Facebook, email shaun@cheekymonkeyz.com.au or call Shaun direct on 0421 251002.

Helping to Stay Organised
‘Be Safe, Not Sorry’ This Winter
Keeping your home organised can be downright hard and overwhelming. Where do you start and where do you finish? We recently discussed this with local Maria Patisso, Founder of Organise My Life. Maria started her business, Organise My Life in 2020. Before this, she had a lifestyle page called My SoCalled Lifestyle. It was all about saving money and living with what you have rather than spending money. “We are Sydney's leading pantry makeover specialists and experts in organising and decluttering peoples' homes. We also work for participants of the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIS), helping children and adults of all ages and disabilities declutter and organise their home according to their needs” said Maria to the Emu and Leonay Gazette. Maria believes that it’s important to keep a house organised. “It’s a scientific fact that seeing clutter around you affects your mental state. Being organised and in control of your life and home always makes you feel good, and there is no better feeling than coming home to an organised home” she explained. Some of the work that Maria and her team does includes helping families be more organised by creating systems, making over pantries, and helping people who hoard. She has these handy tips to help keep your house organised: Your Pantry: • Remove out of date foods • Categorise your foods into containers • Make a list of your foods • Create menus using foods you already have • Make a shopping list using only foods you "need" • Hit the shops and save money! Your Home: • Declutter 1 space every week/month • Remove items you are not using and donate/dispose • At the end of the night "reset", and put "things" back in their homes (cupboards/drawers etc) • Declutter your wardrobe! Use the 1 in/1 out method when shopping • Create a go-zone for your kid’s school items For more information about Organise My Life, you can find them on Facebook at Organise My Life Sydney and Instagram at @organisemylife_sydney. You can also contact them via email at hello@organisemylife.com.au or visit their website www.organisemylife.com.au.
The mother of a Sydney boy, who was badly burnt as a toddler, has joined Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) to warn others about fire danger this winter. Cayden Blake was 12 months old in June 2019 when he walked into an open fireplace, captivated by the flames. The youngster suffered serious burns to his hands, arms, and face. “Cayden, as a toddler, was curious about the “pretty” flames and it only took a second for him to walk into the fireplace,” said Tiffany Rapley-Adams, Cayden’s mother. “Please child-proof your fireplaces and if you haven’t already done so, educate your kids about the dangers of fire.” The theme for this year’s Winter Fire Safety campaign is “Be safe, not sorry.” “Please ensure you have a home fire escape plan, so your children know what to do if a fire breaks out,” said FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter. “It’s also important to fireproof your home as much as possible by having working smoke alarms.” NSW Rural Fire Service Assistant Commissioner Ben Millington said there are steps residents can take to prevent a fire from breaking out in their home. “It can be as simple as keeping flammable objects a ‘metre from the heater,’ not leaving cooking unattended and not using outdoor heating or cooking equipment inside,” Assistant Commissioner Millington said. FRNSW advises the public to: • Check and maintain smoke alarms; • Keep any drying clothes or anything flammable at least a metre from the heater; • Clean and maintain any fireplaces; • Do not use outdoor heating or cooking equipment inside your home; • Check electric blankets are safe for use and never go to bed or leave home with your electric blanket on; • Do not overheat wheat bags in the microwave; • Do not overload power boards; • Clean the lint filter from your clothes dryer after each use; • Never leave cooking unattended; • Always use candles under adult supervision and do not leave them unattended; • Ensure you have a ‘home fire escape plan” and practice it regularly with your family; and • If a fire does occur, get out, stay out and call Triple Zero (000). This winter, keep you and your loved ones safe by using the Get Ready for Winter checklist. FRNSW has attended 1,226 home fires since the beginning of 2022. There were 3,502 home fires in 2021. Last winter, there were 953 residential fires, including: • 359 kitchen fires (accounting for 38% of winter fires) • 98 bedroom fires (accounting for 10% of all winter fires) • 81 chimney/fireplace emergencies (accounting for 8% of all winter fires); and • 69 loungeroom fires (accounting for 7% of all winter fires)

Who hasn’t imagined having their money stress taken away? We know money gives us power. So, whether it’s winning the lottery, or finding something valuable, or receiving an inheritance - when we’re stressed about money - any one of these promises to take that stress away and secure our future. Jesus understood that experience. In fact, he took that and painted this picture, “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” (Matthew 13:44). Take a moment with me then - what’s he getting at? Isn’t he saying the man did the obvious thing – turning everything he had to get something greater? And did you notice the joy the man has in doing that? It’s a great picture Jesus paints. But it’s a picture that points to a bigger treasure. Jesus is saying that whatever we have, whatever we value, there is something of far greater value – being a part of the kingdom of God! Jesus came as king to rule over it, died and rose again so we might be in it, and offers us the joy of finding it. That doesn’t mean we have to sell everything we have – but it does mean he’s the one we trust for our security now in this life, and in the life to come. We can strike it rich and share joy like the man who found that treasure, without even adding a dollar to our bank balance.

Suffering from DVTs and Pulmonary Embolisms? Could your Iron levels be a Cause Annually, 17,000 Australians suffer venous blood clots (VTE). This article was inspired by a patient suffering iron deficiency, who’d recently been released from hospital after treatment for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and subsequent pulmonary embolism (blood-clots) in both lungs. DVT blood clots can break off and eventually lodge in the lungs causing pulmonary thromboembolism (PE) as happened in this patient. Iron-deficiency (ID) is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide. ID is also a known risk factor for blood clotting disorders such as VTE, but this is ‘under-recognised’ and so testing for iron deficiency/anaemia isn’t routinely done in hospitalized VTE patients. The exact mechanism/s via which ID causes blood clots is still being elucidated. ID can increase platelet counts which may increase likelihood of clotting and animal studies show that platelet count in ID can be normalised by iron supplements. However, clots also occur in ID patients when platelet-counts are normal, so the reason for increased clotting in ID may be unrelated to platelet count. Apart from ID, previous studies have linked raised levels of blood-coagulation ‘factor-VIII’, to increased risk of recurring VTE and PE. Researchers suspected a link between iron and factor-VIII

blood-levels, so they studied patients with an inherited disorder of blood-vessel-formation called haemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). Patients suffer turbulent blood flow within fragile bloodvessel walls, rendering blood-vessels prone to haemorrhage. HHT patients are also at increased risk of: 1. Blood loss and thus iron deficiency, 2. VTE The authors found that lower blood iron levels in HHT patients increased the risk of blood-clots. When iron levels were low (6 μmol/litre) patients were 2.5 times more likely to suffer clots compared to patients with ‘mid-normal-range’ iron levels (17 μmol/litre). Although factor-VIII increases with age, acute inflammation and vWF concentration (its carrier protein), after accounting for these and platelet count, iron deficiency remained an independent risk factor for increased factor-VIII blood levels and blood-clotting risk. Study authors concluded (citing evidence) that blood-vessel lining cells (endothelial cells) can sense low blood-iron. These cells respond by increasing factorVIII production to reduce bleeding risk, thus avoiding further iron loss. The extra factor-VIII however increases clotting risk. The important finding was that blood clots disappeared with iron supplementation.

It’s Official – New Research Shows July is Better than January for Achieving Goals According to the latest research commissioned by Dry July Foundation, almost half of all Australians who took a break from alcohol in the past two years found that July is the best month of the year, blitzing January, the far more traditional New Year’s resolution month. Dry July Foundation spokesperson, Ashleigh Oliver said, “We always knew July was a great month to go alcohol-free, now there’s proof there is no better month to set a goal, go dry for a purpose and raise funds for people affected by cancer. July stands out as the clear circuit-breaker month with 46% of Aussies who took a break from alcohol in the past two years, taking it in July. Only 35% chose January”. The research revealed that Aussies found it easier in July than January to be the driver or ‘responsible one’; were more likely to continue drinking less alcohol after their break than before it and more Australians experienced health and wellness benefits like better sleep, improved fitness, better mental wellbeing, and increased energy. Now in its 15th year, Dry July Foundation encourages all Australians to sign up for the 31-day challenge and help raise funds for people affected by cancer. Funds raised through Dry July are distributed to local and national cancer support organisations across Australia who provide practical, tangible services for people affected by cancer. Whether it's a lift to a lifesaving appointment, guidance from a specialist nurse, connection to an informative voice, access to therapy programs or a bed close to treatment, everything Dry July Foundation funds helps to make a difficult time, a little easier for people affected by cancer. This year, Dry Julyers can choose to raise funds for Dry July Foundation, Bowel Cancer Australia, Cancer Council, Leukaemia Foundation, McGrath Foundation, Ovarian Cancer Australia, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, or any one of the 37 cancer support organisations they have partnered with. To sign up for Dry July or make a donation, visit the Dry July website at www.dryjuly.com. r Help raise funds for people affected by cancer | Image/Article: Forward/Dry July Foundation

THE LAST WORD FROM THE EDITOR July marks 10 years since I acquired the District Gazette. What began as 3 publications is now 5; our reach has grown from 13 suburbs to 20; and the number of letterboxes we deliver to has increased from 15,000 to 27,100 and 57,000 readership has now hit 83,000. Supporting local businesses has been integral over the years, as has employing locals. We have shone a light on great causes, given traction to worthy fundraisers and met the locals and shared their stories. We’ve achieved some significant milestones in this time including the transformation from Black+White to Colour. Without our valuable advertisers, readers, contributors, suppliers, contractors, and staff - none of these amazing achievements would have been possible! We’re so proud to continue delivering Your Community News directly to letterboxes...... for almost 25 years and ongoing. Enjoy this month’s edition! I will end with this, I am a big believer that ‘Opportunities don’t just happen, you create them!’
