New Community Facilities To Be Delivered As Part Of Wollondilly’s Draft Capital Works Program

Council’s draft Delivery Program, Operational Plan and Capital Works Program (2026-2027) considered at last month’s Council meeting, with towns right across the Shire soon to benefit from new facilities. While roads are the immediate top priority for Wollondilly, the community has also expressed a desire for Council to invest in major infrastructure, including new community and sporting facilities. Council is investing a total of $45.8M in capital works across the Shire for the next financial year, with a range of exciting projects to support the health and wellbeing of the communities right across the Shire. Some of the highlights, in addition to road improvements, will include: • The Old Menangle School site playground and landscaping, construction and building design • Dudley Chesham all abilities playground and multipurpose building design at The Oaks • Completion of the Picton to Tahmoor Shared Cycleway • Commencement of the Wollondilly Performing Arts Centre • An upgrade of the Birahlee Park Playground at Yanderra • Botanic Gardens upgrades, including accessible amenities, stage, pathways and an inclusive play space • Netball courts and floodlighting at Appin Sportsground • Numerous footpath projects including Avon Dam Road and Silverdale Road, as well as kerb & gutter Mayor Matt Gould said, “While improving our roads is clearly the top priority for our community, followed by sustainable management of growth and development, our community also wants to see investment in major infrastructure including new community and sporting facilities.” “We have taken on board feedback received from our residents during the recent public exhibition period to ensure that their priorities for the future have been adequately captured, and we look

forward to see work happening on the ground in the near future.” “We live in an amazing Shire and our vision is to keep what makes it so special whilst making it an even better place for everyone,” he said. Affordable Preschool Locked In For Wollondilly’s Youngest Learners The NSW Government is making preschool more affordable for more families, with preschool fee relief locked in for the next four years through a more than $1.4 billion investment in a new Affordable Preschool Program. The Affordable Preschool Program will ease the cost-of-living pressure for families and ensure more children receive a highquality education in the crucial year before school. Member for Wollondilly, Nathaniel Smith, said this investment would support families in the electorate to have access to quality preschool programs, no matter their circumstances or where they live. “The NSW Liberals and Nationals Government is delivering for our young families in providing continued – and expanded – affordable preschool for the next four years,” Mr Smith said. “I know that families in Wollondilly will benefit significantly from this four-year investment. “Not only is this benefiting the youngest of learners, but it also enables families to get back into the workforce.” Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said that one of the most significant impacts we can have on educational outcomes at school is to improve early childhood education. “A significant body of research shows that children who participate in quality preschool programs have improved lifelong educational, social and economic outcomes,” Ms Mitchell said. “That’s why I’m delighted to be continuing our support for community and mobile preschools. Families using these services are not eligible for the Child Care Subsidy, so NSW’s commitment to long-term funding relief is significant and genuinely needed. “We are also extending support to NSW families whose children attend preschool in a long daycare setting because at the

It is now easier for victims of identity theft to take back control of compromised documents thanks to a new service launched by the NSW Government. ID Support NSW is a nation-leading service that acts as a one-stop-shop for victims of the crime to seek help and securely recover Government documents and private information, such as their driver’s licence and birth certificate. Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies MP said the service is about making the process for people to recover more efficient. “ID Support NSW takes the pressure away by bringing all the key call points into one location—NSW Police, Transport for NSW, Service NSW, The Office of the Children’s Guardian and Births Deaths and Marriages,” Mrs Davies said. “Through the service, people can also access counselling services and even advice on how to protect themselves in the future.” Member for Mulgoa said this new service will give people more of a fighting chance to recover their documents. “It can be incredibly distressing having your identity stolen, especially for older Australians who represent 37 per cent of all reported cases,” Mrs Davies said. “Victims of the crime can lose an average of $4,000 and spend a total 34 hours talking to individual people to try to solve the problem. ID Support NSW operates between 9am and 6pm from Monday to Friday via the toll-free number 1800 001 040. Noble Deeds Local husband and wife Kevin and Kellie Noble of Team Noble Travels are preparing for the Spring 2022 S***box Rally in October, which will see them drive from Mackay to Darwin, whilst raising money for charity. The Rally from Mackay in Queensland to Darwin in the Northern Territory via The Savannah Way takes place from October 15th to October 21st, 2022 and will cover a distance of 3,342 kilometres. The event is officially endorsed and supported by Cancer Council. Their car is a 1999 Holden VT Commodore. The rules of the rally include that the car must be roadworthy and not be worth more than $1,000. “Our last rally was the Autumn 2021 S***box Rally from Alice Springs to the Gold Coast in May last year. We raised over $11,000 for our team. The whole rally itself, consisting of all the teams combined, raised over $2.3 million” said Kellie Noble of Team Noble Travels. Kevin and Kellie have set themselves a personal team fundraising goal of $10,000 for the next rally and hope to raise more if possible. “We are really excited to see places that most people don’t usually get to see. Many remote towns and sites. I’m looking forward to visiting Mataranka Hot Springs, as that has been on my bucket list for a long time” she smiled. They also enjoy the camaraderie that comes with being a part of the rally community. “Being a part of the rally family is amazing. You spend time in a group of six other teams the whole way there. It becomes like one big family, and we all pull together to try and get each car and team to the finish line. Teamwork, friendships, and adventure all for a great cause” Kellie explained. The community can support Team Noble Travels through their rally donation page. Sponsorship for their car is also available and starts at $500. This includes signage and exposure on their Commodore and Facebook page and various media throughout the rally. “It’s perfect for a business that wants to get their name out there, whilst donating for a good cause” she stated. For donation and sponsorship details, search Team Noble Travels on Facebook. For sponsorship enquiries, you can also message them directly on 0459 394523.

It’s Official – New Research Shows July is Better than January for Achieving Goals According to the latest research commissioned by Dry July Foundation, almost half of all Australians who took a break from alcohol in the past two years found that July is the best month of the year, blitzing January, the far more traditional New Year’s resolution month. Dry July Foundation spokesperson, Ashleigh Oliver said, “We always knew July was a great month to go alcohol-free, now there’s proof there is no better month to set a goal, go dry for a purpose and raise funds for people affected by cancer. July stands out as the clear circuit-breaker month with 46% of Aussies who took a break from alcohol in the past two years, taking it in July. Only 35% chose January”. The research revealed that Aussies found it easier in July than January to be the driver or ‘responsible one’; were more likely to continue drinking less alcohol after their break than before it and more Australians experienced health and wellness benefits like better sleep, improved fitness, better mental wellbeing, and increased energy. Now in its 15th year, Dry July Foundation encourages all Australians to sign up for the 31-day challenge and help raise funds for people affected by cancer. Funds raised through Dry July are distributed to local and national cancer support organisations across Australia who provide practical, tangible services for people affected by cancer. Whether it's a lift to a lifesaving appointment, guidance from a specialist nurse, connection to an informative voice, access to therapy programs or a bed close to treatment, everything Dry July Foundation funds helps to make a difficult time, a little easier for people affected by cancer. This year, Dry Julyers can choose to raise funds for Dry July Foundation, Bowel Cancer Australia, Cancer Council, Leukaemia Foundation, McGrath Foundation, Ovarian Cancer Australia, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, or any one of the 37 cancer support organisations they have partnered with. To sign up for Dry July or make a donation, visit the Dry July website at www.dryjuly.com. r Help raise funds for people affected by cancer | Image/Article: Forward/Dry July Foundation

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Sadly, during June, Luddenham said goodbye to two icons. Andy Leonello was tragically killed whilst driving his bus in Llandilo. Andy lived in Luddenham for 46 years and was well respected in the town. Also, Benny Willmington passed away aged 89. Benny spent most of his life running the Luddenham Post Office. He was also actively involved in the Progress Association, Uniting Church, Bush Fire Brigade and the P & C. Rest in peace Andy and Benny and thanks for your contribution to Luddenham. The Luddenham Showground has just taken delivery of new tractor, mower, forklift, and front-end loader. Thanks to Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa, for helping secure the NSW Government Community Building Partnership Grant. This will be a great asset for the Showground. The Show Society also received a Federal Grant for $15,000 to make up for not having a Show last year. Thanks Angus Taylor MP for your assistance to secure this grant. The first Dogs in the Park was held in the Showground and was a huge success. Another Dogs in the Park is planned for 14th August. The Country Markets are continuing the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month. The Luddenham Progress Association is continuing with the #saveluddenham campaign. The community is keen to gain a better understanding of the basis for the Western Sydney Airport Co objections to scenario 4. Unfortunately, the absence of open and constructive communication with Western Sydney Airport Co is making it hard. Support for Luddenham Village from the NSW Government would be of great value to resolve this matter. The community is seeking NSW Government acknowledgement of the validity of the Department’s visioning process and approval of scenario 4. The Progress Association is now writing to the NSW Minister for Planning and Homes (Anthony Roberts MP) to immediately approve scenario 4: Creating a Sustainable Luddenham Village. As detailed in the Luddenham Village Interim Strategy, released March 2022, allowing new homes in the north of Luddenham out of all the noise contours. v

‘Be Safe, Not Sorry’ This Winter The mother of a Sydney boy, who was badly burnt as a toddler, has joined Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) to warn others about fire danger this winter. Cayden Blake was 12 months old in June 2019 when he walked into an open fireplace, captivated by the flames. The youngster suffered serious burns to his hands, arms, and face. “Cayden, as a toddler, was curious about the “pretty” flames and it only took a second for him to walk into the fireplace,” said Tiffany Rapley-Adams, Cayden’s mother. “Please child-proof your fireplaces and if you haven’t already done so, educate your kids about the dangers of fire.” The theme for this year’s Winter Fire Safety campaign is “Be safe, not sorry.” “Please ensure you have a home fire escape plan, so your children know what to do if a fire breaks out,” said FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter. “It’s also important to fireproof your home as much as possible by having working smoke alarms.” NSW Rural Fire Service Assistant Commissioner Ben Millington said there are steps residents can take to prevent a fire from breaking out in their home. “It can be as simple as keeping flammable objects a ‘metre from the heater,’ not leaving cooking unattended and not using outdoor heating or cooking equipment inside,” Assistant Commissioner Millington said. FRNSW advises the public to: • Check and maintain smoke alarms; • Keep any drying clothes or anything flammable at least a metre from the heater; • Clean and maintain any fireplaces; • Do not use outdoor heating or cooking equipment inside your home; • Check electric blankets are safe for use and never go to bed or leave home with your electric blanket on; • Do not overheat wheat bags in the microwave; • Do not overload power boards; • Clean the lint filter from your clothes dryer after each use; • Never leave cooking unattended; • Always use candles under adult supervision and do not leave them unattended; • Ensure you have a ‘home fire escape plan” and practice it regularly with your family; and • If a fire does occur, get out, stay out and call Triple Zero (000). This winter, keep you and your loved ones safe by using the Get Ready for Winter checklist. FRNSW has attended 1,226 home fires since the beginning of 2022. There were 3,502 home fires in 2021. Last winter, there were 953 residential fires, including: • 359 kitchen fires (accounting for 38% of winter fires) • 98 bedroom fires (accounting for 10% of all winter fires) • 81 chimney/fireplace emergencies (accounting for 8% of all winter fires); and • 69 loungeroom fires (accounting for 7% of all winter fires) r Cayden Blake| Image/Article: Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW)

Suffering from DVTs and Pulmonary Embolisms? Could your Iron levels be a Cause Annually, 17,000 Australians suffer venous blood clots (VTE). This article was inspired by a patient suffering iron deficiency, who’d recently been released from hospital after treatment for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and subsequent pulmonary embolism (blood-clots) in both lungs. DVT blood clots can break off and eventually lodge in the lungs causing pulmonary thromboembolism (PE) as happened in this patient. Iron-deficiency (ID) is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide. ID is also a known risk factor for blood clotting disorders such as VTE, but this is ‘under-recognised’ and so testing for iron deficiency/anaemia isn’t routinely done in hospitalized VTE patients. The exact mechanism/s via which ID causes blood clots is still being elucidated. ID can increase platelet counts which may increase likelihood of clotting and animal studies show that platelet count in ID can be normalised by iron supplements. However, clots also occur in ID patients when platelet-counts are normal, so the reason for increased clotting in ID may be unrelated to platelet count. Apart from ID, previous studies have linked raised levels of blood-coagulation ‘factor-VIII’, to increased risk of recurring VTE and PE. Researchers suspected a link between iron and factor-VIII

10 July 2022 www.mulgoagazette.com.au

blood-levels, so they studied patients with an inherited disorder of blood-vessel-formation called haemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). Patients suffer turbulent blood flow within fragile bloodvessel walls, rendering blood-vessels prone to haemorrhage. HHT patients are also at increased risk of: 1. Blood loss and thus iron deficiency, 2. VTE The authors found that lower blood iron levels in HHT patients increased the risk of blood-clots. When iron levels were low (6 μmol/litre) patients were 2.5 times more likely to suffer clots compared to patients with ‘mid-normal-range’ iron levels (17 μmol/litre). Although factor-VIII increases with age, acute inflammation and vWF concentration (its carrier protein), after accounting for these and platelet count, iron deficiency remained an independent risk factor for increased factor-VIII blood levels and blood-clotting risk. Study authors concluded (citing evidence) that blood-vessel lining cells (endothelial cells) can sense low blood-iron. These cells respond by increasing factor-VIII production to reduce bleeding risk, thus avoiding further iron loss. The extra factor-VIII however increases clotting risk. The important finding was that blood clots disappeared with iron supplementation.

Ladies & Mens Hairdressing It was the end of an era for the Rotary Club of Wallacia – Mulgoa Valley last month, with the club closing after serving the local community for 20 years. The club was formed in 2002 by the Rotary Club of Lower Blue Mountains. They started with 22 members, which decreased in later years. “Rotary is mainly known for its BBQ’s, but its more about some wonderful people who are passionate at helping others. The shared friendships, working together for a common cause, our many interesting guest speakers and of course helping our community” explained Jan Bradley, founding member of the Rotary Club of Wallacia – Mulgoa Valley. The work that the club has done for the community over the past two decades has been immense, with many organisations and individuals on the receiving end of their generosity. In 2006, they enhanced the cenotaph at Warragamba, with the addition of two flanged brick walls, a stencilled concrete walkway in the centre of which is the flagpole and associated plaques commemorating the different wars. The club conducted fundraising BBQs at the Luddenham Uniting Church Markets at and Harvey Norman in Penrith for many years. They manned the admission gates at the Luddenham Show for over 5 years. They came together to raise thousands of dollars in donations to the drought-affected farmers in the west during one of the State’s worst natural disasters. Local schools, charities and other causes have received donations thanks to their hard work and dedication. As a Rotary Club, they participated in the Rotary Youth Exchange project, by hosting two debutante balls for their youth members and contributed to several Rotary projects and causes. Some of the community organisations they have helped include Destiny Rescue, Mama Lana’s Community Foundation, The Ross Hutchison Foundation and Police Legacy. “We are sad that this has come to an end, but we will be continuing with Rotary as members of one of their local clubs in Penrith, St Marys, Penrith Valley, South Penrith, Nepean Club and Lower Blue Mountains,” said Jan. On behalf of the local community, thank you Rotary Club of Wallacia – Mulgoa Valley for all that you have done. r Feature Article [Cover] Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa with Rotary Club of Wallacia – Mulgoa Valley members and guests at the very last meeting | Image: Tanya Davies MP [Above] Rotary Club of Wallacia – Mulgoa Valley | Image: Jan Bradley

ALWAYS REMEMBER. BIN YOUR BUTTS Cigarette butts don’t just go away. They can end up in local waterways, creeks and rivers such as the Nepean River. These release toxic chemicals affecting the environment and wildlife. Always remember – bin your butts.

How To Give Instructions Your Child Will Follow

Every day, well intentioned parents communicate important messages to their children. The problem is that not all messages are received in ways we anticipate. Communication is a complex process and a skill we often need to work at no matter how old we are. These tips will help you get your message across and enjoy a more stress-free family life. • Gather your child’s full attention: Make sure you are no further than an arm’s distance and address your child by name first. Make sure that they are not doing anything else like playing with a toy or watching TV. • Give instructions about what you want your child to do, rather than what not to do: Think about moving from ‘STOP’ to ‘START’ instructions. For example, instead of saying, “don’t play with the ball inside”, try “please take the ball into the backyard and play outside”. • Be specific about what you expect: Spell out exactly what needs to happen next and avoid judgmental and vague language. For example, instead of saying, “don’t be so lazy”, try “please put your dishes in the sink after you’ve finished eating”. • Always consider age and stage of development: For an instruction to be followed, it must be appropriate to that child’s age and stage. Consider the type and number of words you use. • Break larger tasks into smaller steps: This is especially true of younger children. “Get ready for bed” refers to following a sequence of several steps: pack away your toys, change into your pyjamas, brush your teeth and so on. Think about prompting children by giving one to two steps at a time. • If your child follows an instruction, praise them: When you show children appreciation for what they do right, this reinforces good habits. When instructions are unclear, children (and parents) can easily become overwhelmed and frustrated. When parents use calm, clear and developmentally appropriate instructions, this supports children’s growth and development.

Church Offers Free Food for those in Need

Wallacia Christian Community Church are offering free fruit and vegetables for people in need. The service is available weekly, on Fridays from 11:00am to 12:00pm at the church. There will be a combination of fruit, vegetables, and bread on offer. Baskets and bags are needed to pick up the food items. It is provided by Hands and Feet, a local organisation that supports community and disability services. “This is an opportunity for us to get to know the community, share time with them and importantly to give back” said Pastor Colin Johnson of Wallacia Christian Community Church. Locals are welcome to share a coffee or tea or have a chat whilst they are at the Church. Pastor Colin is also a qualified counsellor and is happy to provide assistance at no cost. In recent times, he has taught scripture at schools in Mulgoa, Wallacia, and

Warragamba. The Church are also looking to serve the community practically in the future through youth services during holiday season, parenting groups, craft centre and establishing family counselling services. “I have a passion for serving the community and look forward to meeting you all” stated Pastor Colin. For more information about Wallacia Christian Community Church and their services, find them on Facebook.

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN

Article Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga Grace West Silverdale | P: 47331635 W: www.gracewest.church | A: 2265 Silverdale Rd, Silverdale NSW 2752 Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am “They don’t deserve to be forgiven!” Have you ever felt yourself saying those words? Every day we are wronged by others in one way or another. Sometimes it is big things in life and other times little things. Do people deserve to be forgiven? I think the answer is ‘no’. People don’t deserve to be forgiven. Forgiveness is not something a person deserves, but a gift you can choose to give. The whole point of forgiveness is that you are choosing to not treat the person the way they deserve. If someone stole my car, then what they deserve is the consequence for theft. Forgiveness is not holding that wrong against the other person. Forgiveness is giving them what they don’t deserve! Nothing in the other person makes them worthy of forgiveness. It means forgiveness is always a gift we can extend to people who don’t deserve it. It is also a gift that others can extend to us. When we have done the wrong thing, others can choose to forgive us. King David, the king of Ancient Israel, said this about God, “He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve.” Psalm 103:10 Each one of us does not deserve to be forgiven by God, but the good news is that he offers each one of us forgiveness for our wrongdoing. WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Article Submitted by: Lyndon Rumsey | M: 0417 174 455 | W: warragambabaptist.org.au | Sunday Service: 9:30 am

Pastor’s Corner

This will be the last opportunity I have to share my thoughts with you, as my time at Warragamba Baptist will conclude at the end of July. Thank you to those of you who have taken the time to read my articles, thank you too, to Belinda and the editorial staff that produce the Mulgoa Gazette, your patience and understanding has blessed me. Relationships are not always easy, recently my wife and I shared lunch with my youngest daughter’s family and my son in law’s business partner, his wife and newly born baby, plus his mother. The wife shared with us, how over time she had “fallen out” with her parents over various matters, and generally there was no ongoing relationship. And now with the birth of their grandchild, her parents were seeking to restore the relationship. Forgiveness is such a difficult place to find in both our hearts and minds. For a long time in my life, I thought that I needed to forgive those who had hurt me, only if they were genuinely sorry what they had done. Truthfully, not everyone will be sorry, even fewer will admit that their actions were wrong, which leads to unresolved conflict and broken relationships. By forgiving others we find freedom, whilst we may not forget what happened, the power of past hurts is lost, it no longer affects the way I live, I am set free. Now we all know that this is not just a one-sided issue and we too, need to go and seek forgiveness from others, for what we have said or done. God’s word says “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their sins, your God your Father will not forgive you.” (Matthew 6: 14 -15). It takes you to start this journey, but the blessing you will receive is greater than the effort involved. May I encourage you to be bold and to reach out into all those broken relationships you have, to seek forgiveness for those that you have hurt, and to forgive those who have hurt you. I ask forgiveness from you if my words have hurt you in any way. Farewell to each of you, know that Jesus loves you so much more than I could ever express.

July marks 10 years since I acquired the District Gazette. What began as 3 publications is now 5; our reach has grown from 13 suburbs to 20; and the number of letterboxes we deliver to has increased from 15,000 to 27,100 and 57,000 readership has now hit 83,000. Supporting local businesses has been integral over the years, as has employing locals. We have shone a light on great causes, given traction to worthy fundraisers and met the locals and shared their stories. We’ve achieved some significant milestones in this time including the transformation from Black+White to Colour. Without our valuable advertisers, readers, contributors, suppliers, contractors, and staff - none of these amazing achievements would have been possible! We’re so proud to continue delivering Your Community News directly to letterboxes...... for almost 25 years and ongoing. Enjoy this month’s edition! I will end with this, I am a big believer that ‘Opportunities don’t just happen, you create them!’
