Residents Cemetery Concerns •The cemetery is on a hillside
and will stand out, impinging on the area’s rural character. • Luddenham Model Park may be forced to close. • The development will set a precedent for more cemeteries in the area • Olive farmers will be unable to use their machines • Contamination from the crematorium could affect local farms • Reasonable use and enjoyment of the land will be affected • increased vandalism * eyesore potential. • Properties will be devalued Luddenham Model Park president Gordon Abnett said more than 100 members who flew model planes over the back of the property and surrounding neighbours’ properties would be forced to go elsewhere. “If it goes ahead and we lose that ground, we’ll lose those members, and the club will have to fold,” he said. Local resident Sascha Vukmirica says “ We have over 1000 signatures on our petition, and we have collected around 500 letters of objection to the site. There has been a misrepresentation on the Development Application and basically we do not feel that the proposed site is appropriate for a cemetery. The deadline for submissions has been extended until the third week of February.

Men’s Shed finds a home Thanks to Council the Shed organised the dismantle and removal of the existing Thirlmere RFS Shed that had to go to make way for the car parking adjoining the enlarged Thirlmere Rail Museum. A new Fire Station is being built in Thirlmere and the old one will be erected on the site of the former Warragamba Workers Club, across the road from the existing Club. Plans and a DA have been submitted to Council. The site has been cleaned up by shed members who are ready to go once formal approval is given. The funding provided through the State Government will allow for the extension of the existing concrete slab, erection of the shed, landscaping and services connection. All going to plan it will be ready for business by late March if not earlier. The shed can then be fitted out with workbenches and the tools supplied through the IMB grant obtained by WOLCOMS in 2009. The Shed will continue to work closely with the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre and the Workers Club to ensure the dream of a shed in Warragamba becomes a reality. Contact Terry 4653 1943.
Road Conditions in the Hot Weather As many residents will have noticed, the recent extremes of hot weather have impacted on the condition of a number of roads, with the bitumen melting (known as ‘bleeding’). Wollondilly Shire Council is continuing to address these issues, including: Placing sand over the worst sections this week as they become active with the heat; Placing warning signs at sections where required, to assist with road safety; Replacing the seal from several sections of Farnsworth Avenue
on or before 14 February. The issue on Farnsworth Avenue relates to an underlying problem with the strength of the pavement, not a sealing contractor issue; Focusing our surveillance on known problem spots; Reviewing its contract processes to increase the defects liability period for sealing contractors, and clarifying the role and responsibility of the contractor to ensure responsibility for the design, laying and maintenance of the sealing work is clear. It is noted that these problems can impact across the whole road network, including other Councils and the Roads and Traffic Authority.

Why Does God Allow Disaster? Flash floods through Toowoomba, Brisbane inundated, a Category 5 Cyclone in Northern Queensland, and most recently devastating bush fires in Western Australia, have all but made us forget about the floods in Victoria, the hail in Sydney that destroyed many farmer’s crops, and the heat wave conditions in NSW (after a wonderful mild start to summer). There have been terrible stories of infants swept from their mothers arms, or a family clinging to roof tops, but the helicopter pilot now living with the tragedy of not being able to save all of them. And of course, these are merely the latest disasters, the ones most recently on our television. If we were to list all the natural disasters – earthquakes, floods, tsunamis, drought, epidemic, infection, locust plague – we will be here for a long time. And we haven’t yet started with the ones humans a directly responsible for – wars, terrorism, haulocaust and oppression. A Christian response to these sort of human tragedies involves providing generously to our neighbours in need. Our common humanity with those who suffer demands nothing less. However, we also must ask the question, ‘Why does God allow suffering?’ For some this question is ridiculous. Surely these disasters tell us that there is no God. Or if there is a god, that god is well meaning but impotent, or worse, powerful but evil. Some well meaning Christians, trying to defend God, might say that disaster comes from the devil, not God, or nature, but not God. But none of these responses represent the bible’s approach, nor can they defend an ‘all powerful’ God. God says, ‘I bring prosperity and create disaster: I the LORD, do all these things’ (Isaiah 45:7 NIV) When told about deaths from a brutal attack, Jesus answered: ‘Do you think that those Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you

Or those eighteen who died Christ. when the tower in Siloam fell on them – do you Jesus in particular gives us many promthink they were more guilty than all the others ises that God will receive those who truly turn living in Jerusalem? The apostle Paul says suffered are no worse than we who continue ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinto live. Clean-Up Norton’s Basin It’s the second year for Clean-Up Australia at the beautiful Norton’s Basin. The Basin is a great place for bushwalking, swimming, rock climbing and fishing. It is not a national park so rubbish is an ongoing problem. The team would really benefit from more volunteers especially as this year will extend down the entry road. Just log on the Clean Up Australia website and join the team for Norton’s Basin. It’s a steep access to the Basin so wear good shoes, long pants and hats. Gloves, insect repellent, rubbish bags, smiles and a free BBQ (up the top!!) will be provided. Hopefully it will not be too hot but you can cool down with a swim. We will be there on Sunday 6th March from 8am and feel free to assist where you can throughout the day which will end around 3pm. Visit www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au to register.

Bang the Table – Special Rate Variation Wollondilly Shire Council is asking for the community’s views on a proposed Special Rate Variation. One of the ways in which the community can have a say is through Council’s online Forum. This anonymous, safe and monitored on-line forum allows the community to view and consider four rate options and provide Council with their views via comments and a Rates Survey. The forum is located at www.wollondillyhaveyoursay.com.au/fundingyourfuture, or it can be accessed via Council’s main web page (www.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au). “We are very interested in community feedback about our proposal for a Special Rate Variation and we will be opening as many avenues as possible for residents to provide that feedback to us. We will also be undertaking other forms of community engagement including a mail out and community workshops. This is your opportunity to have a say,” says Mayor, Cr Michael Banasik. This is a very important issue for residents and Council appreciates that
many people lead very busy lives and find it difficult to attend meetings and community consultations or simply do not have the time or inclination for letter writing. The on-line forum allows for community input, in your own time. Why does Council need to consider the Proposed Special Rate Variation? Over the next 10 years, a further $6 million per year is required to maintain assets in a safe and satisfactory condition. A rate Increase of 8% per year (including the annual rate capping amount) for seven years is proposed to meet this maintenance need. If the proposed rate increase is not approved, asset maintenance and services will need to be reduced. A series of frequently asked questions and a powerpoint presentation have been developed to provide additional information on the Special Rate Variation Proposal. These documents can be viewed on the websites provided. For further information about the proposed Special Rate Variation go to www.wollondillyhaveyoursay.com.au/ fundingyourfuture; or www.wollond-
illy.nsw.gov.au or call Council on 4677 1100. Submissions can be made and should quote Council’s reference “TRIM 5473-3” and must be received no later than 4pm on Monday 21 February 2011, by posting directly to: The General Manager Wollondilly Shire Council PO Box 21 PICTON NSW 2571 Or by email as follows: council@ wollondilly.nsw.gov.au or call Council on 4677 1100. Information regarding the Special Rate Variation can be viewed until 21 February 2011 at Council’s Administration Centre, 62-64 Menangle Street, Picton between the hours of 8am and 4pm, Monday to Friday; and Council’s website: www.wollondilly.nsw.gov. au

Switch off your lights for Earth Hour at 8.30pm, Saturday 26 March 2011 and celebrate your commitment to the planet with the people of the world and sustain your actions beyond the hour Earth Hour 2010 was the largest voluntary action for the environment. NSW Fire Brigade name change The NSW Fire Brigades (NSWFB) has changed its name to Fire and Rescue NSW. Todays NSWFB is a contemporary, service-based organisation which has grown significantly since first being established just on a hundred years ago. The new name more accurately reflects the wider scope of services offered to the community and proudly symbolises and supports the organisation’s vision for the future. While the NSWFB’s name and look may change in 2011, there will be no change to the way emergency services are delivered in NSW. Fire and Rescue NSW will continue to be part of the state’s network of vital emergency services which work together 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to keep the community safe. Please be aware that in an emergency, the public should continue to access Fire and Rescue NSW by calling the Triple Zero (000) emergency number.
Snake alert
Remember that the Fire and Rescue NSW crew at Warragamba are fully trained to catch snakes that are a threat to your family. Snakes are active in this summer weather and keeping the area round your house clear will minimise the danger. The brigade will also rescue any other wildlife or pets.
Picton Theatre Group There’s a different old film, on the last Sunday in each month, offered by Picton Theatre Group Inc. with the kind support of the Club, and initial funding from Wollondilly Shire Council. February’s film is a 1939 British Spy comedy, “Q Planes”. Others this year are from Alistair Mclean, and films with Errol Flynn, Jayne Mansfield, and Abbott & Costello. Tickets are just $2, at the door, from Picton Theatre members.

for one afternoon every week since the start of term 3 - a whole half a year of school visits to the Kindergarten classroom. They got to know all the teachers and most of the students during these visits and so we had no tears - except from the parents!! This extended transition program has meant that the children are ready to settle straight into their learning. Our captains are of course, model citizens!! The captains are Clayton Johns and Ashley Dunn. Both have been here since Kindergarten. We moved into our new library over the holidays and it looks lovely. The children will start borrowing from the new library next week and will be able to use the new video-conferencing facilities. It is lovely and cool in the library, as we have had airconditioning installed. There are lots of things coming up over the next few weeks. Our parent information evening will be held on Tuesday 8th February from 5pm. Our swimming carnival will be held on Monday 21st February with Orchard Hills, Wallacia and Luddenham Public Schools and we will hold a fundraiser to support the public schools in Queensland affected by the recent floods.
