We’re Just So Bookable

Council has rolled out a new sportsground and facility booking software, called Bookable. The new online system allows residents to compare, select, book and pay for venues instantly, without ever having to leave home. There are a number of video tutorials to teach residents how to use the new system, as well as a PDF manual. The videos walk through the key tasks, including how to register; how to search and select a venue; how to book your chosen venue; how to make changes to an existing booking; and how to keep your account up-to-date. Mayor of Camden, Cr Therese Fedeli, said booking a sportsground or facility has never been easier. “Camden is one of the fastest growing local government areas in the country, welcoming more than 100 new residents every week,” Cr Fedeli said. “With this kind of growth, we need to make sure we’re always streamlining and improving our processes. We want our growing population to have enjoyable and seamless experiences close to home, so we’ll keep working hard to make that happen. This exciting new system is part of that. “As with any new system, it may take some getting used to and you may need some help navigating it. Don’t forget you can reach our staff by phone or email or, even more conveniently, through Council’s new live chat function on our website. There will be someone there during business hours to help you out. “For groups and organisations that regularly hire sportsgrounds and halls, Council will be hosting a number of information sessions in the coming weeks to help them get across the system.” For more information, visit https:// www.camden.nsw.gov.au/parks-andrecreation/online-bookings To speak to someone about Bookable, call Council’s Sports and Recreation Team on 4654 7777 or email recreationofficers@ camden.nsw.gov.au rArticle: Camden Council | Image: www. pixabay.com.

Local to Compete at World Butchers' Challenge Oran Park butcher Brett Laws of Pryde Meats in Narellan has been chosen to represent Australia at the 2022 World Butchers’ Challenge in the US. Brett will be part of a 14 strong Australian team who will compete against some of the world’s best butchers on 2-3 September 2022 at Sacramento in California. Described as the Olympics of butchery, Brett and his teammates will showcase their skills against 16 teams from around the world in a 15,000 seat stadium. “It’s an honour to be chosen as a member of the Australian Butcher Team. I can’t wait to join the team and for us to showcase our trade against internationals on the world stage” said Brett to the Oran Park Gazette. Brett has been a butcher for over 15 years and has joined his father and brother who are also fellow butchers. His work as a butcher has seen him compete previously in various meat competitions here in Australia. “I have competed in Meatstock events, placing 3rd in Sydney and Melbourne. I also placed 3rd in an online competition with my lamb display” he smiled. Organiser of the Australian Butcher Team, Shannon Walker is excited about the team and the level of skill that they will be bringing to the competition. “This team represents an incredible cross section of the Australian butcher industry, from those who have competed before and are old hands, to those who are true specialists in value-add” he said. Funds are being raised to help send the Australian team to the US. Donations can be made via GoFundMe at https:// www.gofundme.com/f/the-australian-butcher-team. Christmess Wraps Filming on Heath Davis’ latest feature film CHRISTMESS has wrapped, in Greater Western Sydney. Written and directed by Davis (Book Week, Broke, Locusts), the film stars Steve Le Marquand (Last Train to Freo), Darren Gilshenan (No Activity) and musician and vocalist Hannah Joy of alternative indie rock band Middle Kids, in her feature film debut. Fresh out of rehab, a desperate once famous actor - Chris Flint (Steve Le Marquand) - takes a job as a Santa Claus in a suburban strip mall where he unexpectedly encounters his long-estranged daughter (Nicole Pastor) and infant grandson. With the love and support of his sponsor, Nick (Darren Gilshenan), and a young, sharp tongued, gay musician in recovery named Joy (Hannah Joy), Chris sets about staying sober in order to win his daughter’s forgiveness for Christmas. CHRISTMESS is the fourth feature that brings together long-time friends Steve Le Marquand and Heath Davis, with Le Marquand starring in Davis’ previous three films Book Week, Broke and Locusts. Hannah Joy’s highly anticipated role as ‘Joy’ will see her contribute original music to the film, as well as Christmas covers. Davis said “I love Christmas movies, but I’ve never really seen a Christmas movie that depicts the reality of what the holiday season is for many of us - crippling stress, anxiety, malaise, and economic struggle, all too often underpinned by alcohol abuse. At its core, CHRISTMESS is a celebration of the human spirit, the kindness of strangers and the healing power of forgiveness. It feels amazing to finally be in production with an incredible team and I can’t wait to share the film with audiences”. Producer, Daniel Fenech added “Our unconventional Christmas movie has heart, and with Heath and I both having spent a large portion of our upbringing in Greater Western Sydney, it felt right to be shooting the film here. We have a strong local contingent of cast and crew from the Macarthur region, and there’s a lot of love and community support behind the project”. CHRISTMESS is written and directed by Heath Davis, and produced by Daniel Fenech, Cindy Pritchard, and Matthew McCracken. The shoot took place over three weeks in the Macarthur, with the cast and crew adhering to COVID-safe filming practices. CHRISTMESS has been financed through crowd funding and the generous support of partners. r Darren Gilshenan, Heath Davis, Hannah Joy, and Steve Le Marquand | Image: Sie Kitts | Article: Crash House Productions/Brick Studios

‘Be Safe, Not Sorry’ This Winter

Macarthur Food + Wine Festival

The mother of a Sydney boy, who was badly burnt as a toddler, has joined Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) to warn others about fire danger this winter. Cayden Blake was 12 months old in June 2019 when he walked into an open fireplace, captivated by the flames. The youngster suffered serious burns to his hands, arms, and face. “Cayden, as a toddler, was curious about the “pretty” flames and it only took a second for him to walk into the fireplace,” said Tiffany Rapley-Adams, Cayden’s mother. “Please child-proof your fireplaces and if you haven’t already done so, educate your kids about the dangers of fire.” The theme for this year’s Winter Fire Safety campaign is “Be safe, not sorry.” “Please ensure you have a home fire escape plan, so your children know what to do if a fire breaks out,” said FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter. “It’s also important to fireproof your home as much as possible by having working smoke alarms.” NSW Rural Fire Service Assistant Commissioner Ben Millington said there are steps residents can take to prevent a fire from breaking out in their home. “It can be as simple as keeping flammable objects a ‘metre from the heater,’ not leaving cooking unattended and not using outdoor heating or cooking equipment inside,” Assistant Commissioner Millington said. FRNSW advises the public to: • Check and maintain smoke alarms; • Keep any drying clothes or anything flammable at least a metre from the heater; • Clean and maintain any fireplaces; • Do not use outdoor heating or cooking equipment inside your home; • Check electric blankets are safe for use and never go to bed or leave home with your electric blanket on; • Do not overheat wheat bags in the microwave; • Do not overload power boards; • Clean the lint filter from your clothes dryer after each use; • Never leave cooking unattended; • Always use candles under adult supervision and do not leave them unattended; • Ensure you have a ‘home fire escape plan” and practice it regularly with your family; and • If a fire does occur, get out, stay out and call Triple Zero (000). This winter, keep you and your loved ones safe by using the Get Ready for Winter checklist. FRNSW has attended 1,226 home fires since the beginning of 2022. There were 3,502 home fires in 2021. Last winter, there were 953 residential fires, including: • 359 kitchen fires (accounting for 38% of winter fires) • 98 bedroom fires (accounting for 10% of all winter fires) • 81 chimney/fireplace emergencies (accounting for 8% of all winter fires); and • 69 loungeroom fires (accounting for 7% of all winter fires)

Bringing Macarthur locals the best in food and drink, the Macarthur Food + Wine Festival arrives at the Macarthur Centre for Sustainable Living on Saturday July 23rd to Sunday July 24th and is brought to you by Eat. They’ve even got activities for the kids, so you can bring the whole family! Whether you’re in the mood to try some international cuisine, hound down a hearty burger, or bring out your sweet tooth with some delicious desserts, they’ve got tastes for every palette - and it doesn’t stop there! Along with their range of food, they’ll also have beers, bubbles, ciders, wines, and more. With brewers and wine cellar doors coming to showcase their latest and greatest, you’ll be at the gates of Flavour Town all weekend. Adult tickets cost $10, while kids enter free! Why prebook? PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Monica Purcell | Family Facilitator Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services W: www.nepeancommunity.org.au E: info@nepeancommunity.org.au

How To Give Instructions Your Child Will Follow

Every day, well intentioned parents communicate important messages to their children. The problem is that not all messages are received in ways we anticipate. Communication is a complex process and a skill we often need to work at no matter how old we are. These tips will help you get your message across and enjoy a more stress-free family life. • Gather your child’s full attention: Make sure you are no further than an arm’s distance and address your child by name first. Make sure that they are not doing anything else like playing with a toy or watching TV. • Give instructions about what you want your child to do, rather than what not to do: Think about moving from ‘STOP’ to ‘START’ instructions. For example, instead of saying, “don’t play with the ball inside”, try “please take the ball into the backyard and play outside”. • Be specific about what you expect: Spell out exactly what needs to happen next and avoid judgmental and vague language. For example, instead of saying, “don’t be so lazy”, try “please put your dishes in the sink after you’ve finished eating”. • Always consider age and stage of development: For an instruction to be followed, it must be appropriate to that child’s age and stage. Consider the type and number of words you use. • Break larger tasks into smaller steps: This is especially true of younger children. “Get ready for bed” refers to following a sequence of several steps: pack away your toys, change into your pyjamas, brush your teeth and so on. Think about prompting children by giving one to two steps at a time. • If your child follows an instruction, praise them: When you show children appreciation for what they do right, this reinforces good habits. When instructions are unclear, children (and parents) can easily become overwhelmed and frustrated. When parents use calm, clear and developmentally appropriate instructions, this supports children’s growth and development.

Scholarship Awarded to Alum of Oran Park Anglican College Senior School Oran Park Anglican College Senior School alum Leah Veld has been awarded one of the highly esteemed ICMS Professional Scholarship 2022. The International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS) located on the Northern Beaches, has increased the number of scholarships available, and funds distributed each year. Last year the College awarded almost $2 million and over 150 scholarships. There are over 30 different scholarship types within the program, creating as many opportunities for as many types of students, this way embracing diversity and inclusivity. In 2022, over 60 school leavers were awarded a scholarship to ICMS. ICMS Scholarships Chair Ann Whitelock, said “Three key values underpin the program: giving back, diversity, and inclusiveness. The ICMS Scholarship Program stands apart from other universities and public institutions where often a discount is disguised as a scholarship just to promote student numbers. At ICMS, students earnestly receive scholarships through hard work”. The Scholarship Ceremony is a highlight on the college calendar where recipients are presented with their formal scholarship award, with the ceremony held both face-to-face and via livestream, enabling students and families to watch from around the globe. Several students are provided with the opportunity of public speaking to share their scholarship stories. The program protects its values with equitable and standardised processes underpinned by fairness and objectivity. Applicants submit a written essay, academic transcripts, references, and an array of relevant documents which highlight leadership roles, community contributions, and high school achievements. Successful students then progress to the panel interview rounds, attended by separate qualifying panels. “At this point, it becomes a highly competitive field of candidates,” added Whitelock. Besides COVID-19 challenges including prolonged lockdowns, border closers, restrictions, isolation, and natural disasters, these scholarship recipients are to be commended for showing incredible tenacity, endurance, and resilience in the face of adversity. Scholarship recipients are offered opportunities to develop leadership and presentation skills with members of the College. Smaller classes and the collegial community at ICMS allow for connecting with others and a sense of belonging while cultivating individuality. This is one of the unique advantages which will provide students with a network of friendships and professionals in the important years to come. The ICMS Professional Scholarship is a specialised opportunity for Australian school leavers. This scholarship is open for applications for students entering tertiary studies in 2023. New Research Shows July is Better than January for Achieving Goals According to the latest research commissioned by Dry July Foundation, almost half of all Australians who took a break from alcohol in the past two years found that July is the best month of the year, blitzing January, the far more traditional New Year’s resolution month. Dry July Foundation spokesperson, Ashleigh Oliver said, “We always knew July was a great month to go alcohol-free, now there’s proof there is no better month to set a goal, go dry for a purpose and raise funds for people affected by cancer. July stands out as the clear circuit-breaker month with 46% of Aussies who took a break from alcohol in the past two years, taking it in July. Only 35% chose January”. The research revealed that Aussies found it easier in July than January to be the driver or ‘responsible one’; were more likely to continue drinking less alcohol after their break than before it and more Australians experienced health and wellness benefits like better sleep, improved fitness, better mental wellbeing, and increased energy. Now in its 15th year, Dry July Foundation encourages all Australians to sign up for the 31-day challenge and help raise funds for people affected by cancer. Funds raised through Dry July are distributed to local and national cancer support organisations across Australia who provide practical, tangible services for people affected by cancer. Whether it's a lift to a lifesaving appointment, guidance from a specialist nurse, connection to an informative voice, access to therapy programs or a bed close to treatment, everything Dry July Foundation funds helps to make a difficult time, a little easier for people affected by cancer. This year, Dry Julyers can choose to raise funds for Dry July Foundation, Bowel Cancer Australia, Cancer Council, Leukaemia Foundation, McGrath Foundation, Ovarian Cancer Australia, Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, or any one of the 37 cancer support organisations they have partnered with. Worth Picking Up?

“She’s picked up a nasty cough.” “He’s picked up a great opportunity there.” We ‘pick up’ all sorts of things that aren’t physical - like flus, new jobs, or even lucky breaks. When Jesus was talking to His apprentices about what it would look like to follow Him, He gave a pretty scary picture. Luke records it this way, “Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”” Now we know that Jesus was about to pick up a real cross and walk the path to His own death. But was every follower really to do the same thing? No. Jesus was telling them to ‘pick up a cross’ in the sense that they were to make a choice to give up control of their lives - to die to it - so that Jesus might be fully in charge. Jesus unpacked it like this, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.” You and I will have picked up many things in our lives. Some of them are light, fun, and enjoyable. Some, on the other hand, are heavy and wearying - like sickness, loneliness, hurts, and destructive habits. Jesus would like us to consider what’s in our hands today. What are we holding on to? In the place of these many things Jesus says there should be just one - a cross. To pick up the cross and following Jesus is to release control of our lives and embrace Him as our King. Just as the cross He was going to would pay the price for our sin, so picking up a cross will enable that forgiveness to find its home in our hearts. That sounds worth picking up to me.

FAITH – ST MARY MACKILLOP CATHOLIC PARISH ORAN PARK

Article Written + Submitted by: Fr David Catterall MTh - Parish Priest @ St Mary MacKillop Catholic Parish Oran Park P: 02 4648 2226 W: www.marymackillopparish.org.au A: 94 Oran Park Drive, Oran Park NSW 2570 Facebook: www.facebook.com/oranparkparish Twitter: www.twitter.com/oranparkparish LISTEN WITH THE EAR OF YOUR HEART - I think it would be fair to say we live in a noisy world – as each day we are bombarded by noise. In his message for this year’s World Day of Social Communications, Pope Francis urged us to be more attune to the practice of listening in a society that sadly seems to no longer know how to. In an online article on the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne website, it was highlighted that “The theme of listening, silence and contemplation is a central one in the writings of the Church’s saints and spiritual masters” such as Henri Nouwen the much-loved Dutch Catholic spiritual writer. In his book Bread for the Journey (1996), Nouwen speaks of ‘listening’ as a kind of spiritual hospitality: “To listen is very hard, because it asks of us so much interior stability that we no longer need to prove ourselves by speeches, arguments, statements, or declarations. True listeners no longer have an inner need to make their presence known. They are free to receive, to welcome, to accept. Listening is much more than allowing another to talk while waiting for a chance to respond. Listening is paying full attention to others and welcoming them into our very beings. The beauty of listening is that, those who are listened to start feeling accepted, start taking their words more seriously and discovering their own true selves” In his letter St James says: “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak” (1:19). May we resist the temptation to add more noise into our noisy world, to ‘talk past one another’ or focus on the ‘soundbites’ but “Freely giving some of our own time to listen to people”. May our prayer be the prayer of King Solomon that we will have a “discerning and listening heart” (cf. 1 Kings 3:9)

Oran Park Probus Club

Probus is about fun, fellowship, and friendship amongst like-minded people. For Oran Park Probus Club members, a lot of activities have occurred in the last few weeks to promote that ideal. Members have participated in craft, a pub lunch, and a fine dining experience. Food is always a winner! Barefoot bowls, coffee and chat, walking, a movie, and trivia were followed by a drive to Berrima and a much-needed hot drink on arrival. It was a very cold day, but the sun shone throughout. A very interesting tour of the Berrima Court House was followed by a pub lunch in cosy, warm surroundings. On the drive home, we stopped at Mittagong to buy pies, cakes, and slices. What a treat they were! Probus membership is available to retired and semi-retired people within the community. Retirement can sometimes be a little difficult to adapt to after a busy working life. Work colleagues tend to drift away, and we have more time to ourselves. Probus can help fill that gap. You can look forward to making new friends and enjoy an active social life. Oran Park Probus Club holds its monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of the month (except January and November) at 10.00am. We have a Guest Speaker for the first part of every meeting. This is a highlight of the meeting as topics are many and varied. Our last speaker was from Big Yellow Umbrella, a local not-for-profit organisation. Many of us had no idea of their programs, the workshops, and the resulting positive outcomes, so the talk was both enlightening and heartwarming. If you would like to hear more about Probus or would like to attend a meeting of Oran Park Probus Club, please contact the Secretary on 0410 758755 or email: secretary.oranparkprobusclub@gmail.com. r

FROM THEWORD EDITOR THE LAST July marks 10 years since I acquired the District Gazette. What began as 3 publications is now 5; our reach has grown from 13 suburbs to 20; and the number of letterboxes we deliver to has increased from 15,000 to 27,100 and 57,000 readership has now hit 83,000. Supporting local businesses has been integral over the years, as has employing locals. We have shone a light on great causes, given traction to worthy fundraisers and met the locals and shared their stories. We’ve achieved some significant milestones in this time including the transformation from Black+White to Colour. Without our valuable advertisers, readers, contributors, suppliers, contractors, and staff - none of these amazing achievements would have been possible! We’re so proud to continue delivering Your Community News directly to letterboxes...... for almost 25 years and ongoing. Enjoy this month’s edition! I will end with this, I am a big believer that ‘Opportunities don’t just happen, you create them!’
