Tanya Davies MP, State Member for Mulgoa, was thrilled by the success of the 2016 Mulgoa Senior School Leadership Forum last month. Twenty-two students from local high schools attended the Mulgoa Leadership Forum at NSW Parliament House last month, and had the opportunity to hear from and discuss leadership with The Hon John Ajaka MLC, Minister for Ageing, Disability and Multiculturalism as well as Mr Daryl Maguire MP, Member for Wagga Wagga, Parliamentary Secretary for Veterans and the Centenary of ANZAC. The forum is an annual event initiated and hosted by Tanya Davies to inspire senior school students to think more broadly about leadership in our community. “I am delighted to have the opportunity to meet and mentor student leaders from across Mulgoa, as well as to recognise their hard work and involvement in their respective school communities,” Tanya Davies said. The student leaders, from Caroline Chisholm College, Penrith Anglican College, Emmaus Catholic College, Nepean Christian School, Glenmore Park High School, Erskine Park High School continued pg. 10

FROM EDITOR FROM THE THE EDITOR Brrrr, you can certainly feel the chill in the air as Winter slides around the corner. I must admit, Winter is my favourite season. I love the crisp morning air, and the wonderful array of soups and stews that grace my dinner table throughout the season. We have almost crept to the middle of the year! And... it’s TAX time! Coupled with this will be the end of Term 2 for those at school, and soon to be a New Financial Year for our friends in business. The tail end of June is certainly a busy one! As another month passes, I wish I could hit the ‘pause’ button for just a moment. This month, we have some great stories of those who want to stand up, step up and make a difference. Not to mention inspiring business people, and interesting businesses just like Poochie Bake on page 8. The Annual Penrith Dolls, Bears, Craft + Collectables show is back, read all about it on page 7. I know I have said it before, but it rings so very true! There are magical moments in every day, we just have to take the time to see them. Enjoy your Community News.

Determined to Make a Difference When his father died of oesophageal cancer last year, Glenmore local Jason Webb thought “Why, in this day and age and with all the technology we have, can’t we find an answer? It occurred to me then well, why can’t I do something? In October 2016, Jason will embark on the GI Cancer Institute’s Gutsy Challenge bike ride in Cambodia after raising funds to fight gastrointestinal cancer. Cycling over 360km in the Cambodian humidity will be no small feat, but Jason is determined to make a difference, “When I received an invitation to join, from Associate Professor Chris Karapetis, a leading oncologist, it ticked all the boxes. GI cancer is a very personal issue for Jason. His father and grandfather both experienced reflux and Barret’s Oesophagus, as does Jason himself and family members. Reflux and Barret’s Oesophagus increase the risk of developing oesophageal cancer. “My grandfather and my father both suffered the same fate, but maybe I can save my own life – or the lives of my children. Jason is the author of Life Through a Straw, a story of his experience of being misdiagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. In 2010, he began to lose feeling in his left foot and ended up in a wheelchair, however, Jason had been misdiagnosed and his condition was eventually found to be a rare autoimmune disease. Jason has since fought his way back to health. “After my own health journey and losing my Dad, I want to embrace life and take joy in every moment. I have been given a second chance at life and don’t intend on wasting it. If you would like to support Jason visit: https://gccambodia. everydayhero.com/au/jason If you would like to join the challenge: www.gutsychallenge. com/challenge-type/biking.

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr & Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 and 7pm. Plus activities for adults and young people right throughout the week.
Youth of Glenmore Park
High School and being a teenager can be exciting and terrifying! It is an age where big things are worked out – who we are, who are our real friends, what is life about, what does my future look like? It can be lonely and stressful, but also full of fun and friendships. Such a mixture! The Bible has many helpful things to say to teenagers, as well as to their parents who are trying hard to care for them. For example, from the book of 1 Timothy, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.” What wonderful, affirming words of wisdom for our Youth to be encouraged and live by! While there is much hopelessness surrounding our Youth today, Jesus offers hope and assurance. Jesus transforms lives with deep peace, joy and hope, that withstands the pressures, temptations, isolation and anxieties faced by our Youth. How important to come to Jesus, learn from him and put him at the centre of your life. What a difference this makes! At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, caring for High Schoolers

and helping them get to know Jesus and navigate this crucial part of life, is a big priority! We teach Scripture and run a Christian group at Glenmore Park High, plus we run our Friday Night Velocity Youth each week from 7pm - 9pm for Year 7 to 12, plus meet with them in smaller Year Groups through the week. We also have 7pm Night Church on Sundays – especially aimed at Youth. Plus, a big highlight is our annual Youth Summit Camp – coming up soon Wednesday 13th to Sunday 17th July at Port Hacking. The students have a brilliant time! Each year they return full of enthusiasm to live lives reflecting the Bible verse above, lives with Jesus at the centre, full of hope and growing in godliness of “speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.” Are you in High School? Do you know a High School Student? Take the plunge! Join us on Friday and Sunday and at Summit in July – you’ll be surprised to discover how knowing Jesus does a make a difference! If you’d like to know more, call Miles Stepniewski 0415 890 391, or check out the “Velocity Youth” Facebook page. We have a great team of leaders and we know that your High School aged students will love it. Rev John Lavender

Yellow Ladybugs Raising Awareness for Young Girls with Autism Local Glenmore Park resident Catherine Wallace is the proud mother of two Autistic girls, Hannah (13) and Ashleigh (10). Catherine has dedicated herself to being “an Autism Acceptance advocate, for not only [her] daughters, but [for] so fewer families [who have been through the struggle] to even reach a diagnosis. Catherine explains that there is a great misconception in society that “Autism predominantly affects ‘boys’. She suggests that this is typically because autistic girls present very differently to boys and this causes a series of problems leading to a misdiagnosis or missing a diagnosis all together. Unfortunately, it appears that girls and their families are only reaching a formal diagnosis as late as 9 years old, where traits have been seen as early as 2 years old. This was the case for Catherine and both her girls. Catherine explains that during the journey to her oldest daughter’s diagnosis, she met a doctor who simply stated that he did not diagnose girls until they were at least 8 or 9 years of age. Both Hannah and Ashleigh attend mainstream schools and receive the necessary learning support that they need. Unfortunately, exclusion and bullying is far too much of a reality for the girls as they are singled out for being ‘different’. It is because of this, that Catherine decided to do some research
and came across Yellow Ladybugs which was operating out of Melbourne. After communication with founder- Katie Koullas, Catherine started work on expanding the project into NSW. Yellow Ladybugs (YLB) is “a parent run friendship group for young girls with Autism.â€? YLB has stated that “[their] vision is to foster a strong bond, which will ultimately create a network of friends outside of school. To give the best opportunity for our friendship groups to thrive.â€? Catherine works to expand YLB into NSW, not only for the benefit of her daughters, but to show them that no matter what obstacle you face, you can always find a way to achieve your goals. Yellow Ladybugs is working in NSW to raise awareness which will be followed by events like those held in Melbourne. Catherine hopes to encourage girls and their parents/ carers to join the Yellow Ladybug NSW group to increase interest and to gain support. YLB has a Go Fund Me campaign which can be found at: www.gofundme.com/yellowladybugsNSW. For those who are interested in Yellow Ladybugs and would like to find out more and get in contact with Catherine, they can do so via the website: www.yellowladybugs.com.au. ď śď€ Catherine with her two daughters Hannah + Ashleigh. Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School
Soul Matters: Our Focus Makes the Difference Sometimes we don’t get what we want out of life because we focus on the wrong things. A common thought is that everyone’s focus is right – right for them. This is true to a point of course because as individuals we have different interests, gifts and dreams. So in one way your focus will differ to mine or that of your neighbour. But the teaching of Jesus in the Bible is that the sum of our lives – our happiness, peace and sense of fulfilment – is about what is going on inside us (the parts other people don’t see). If you like, it’s about the focus of our heart. This is why people who have just lost everything in a mud slide in India can be hopeful, while others who are safe and prosperous can struggle to see the future positively. It also explains why people in jail can find freedom behind bars, but others not in jail become prisoners to addictive substances, sex, money or work. If, for example, on the inside we have a sense of being loved and valued we will enjoy peace and happiness even if things don’t go so well outwardly. But if fear defines us inwardly, and we are afraid of not being loved or not having enough, focussing on being more successful or wealthier is unlikely to bring lasting joy and peace. How much is enough? And soon our life has been spent while being secretly unhappy because of a wrong focus. Jesus said, “follow me” – in other words, make me your undivided focus and orient your life around me, and I will give you rest for your soul. Again he was saying, “Make me your focus and I will show you how to live freely and lightly by filling your heart with love and driving all fear and the heaviness of a fear-driven life away.” To have your say go to my Soul Matters blog at www. paulmarshall.org. Live freely and lightly, Paul

PARENTS CORNER
All Things Delicious for our Fur Babies
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 0409 986121 or 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
This month we continue the series on Parent Traps that we started in April. Do you give your child ‘accidental rewards’ for his/her undesirable behaviour? Accidental rewards include: • Social attention • Material rewards • Activity rewards Social Attention Smiling or laughing at your child’s undesirable behaviour will ensure that she will do the behaviour again. Spending a lot of time trying to reason with, or arguing with your child over his behaviour may also guarantee that you will see it again. Material Reward This is the reward that children get when they whinge and cry at the supermarket for a toy or chocolate, and they get it to keep them quiet. Activity Rewards An activity reward is where the parent redirects or distracts a child from her undesirable behaviour with an activity or a food treat, of directly addressing the behaviour. Do you use a lot of redirection or distraction to address your child’s behaviour? They are OK sometimes, but I worry when I see parents using redirection or distraction a lot because it indicates that the parent feels uncomfortable about setting boundaries and limits. Children need boundaries and limits to stay physically and emotionally safe, and when the parent has difficulties in this regard it can elicit extreme behaviour from the child. Remedy? Ignore minor mistaken behaviour. Stay calm, and give your child clear, calm instructions. It’s OK to set a boundary or limit for your child. It’s OK to say ‘no’. If you are in public, disregard comments and looks from other people – chances are they don’t have a degree in child psychology. Struggling? The Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) parenting course is available free in the community (www.resourcingparents.nsw. gov.au/). Triple P Online is available for the cost of $80. Supporting the Kids of Lindsay Federal Minister for Education and Training, Simon Birmingham visited Lindsay last month to see first-hand how Turnbull Government programmes are benefiting families. The Minister and local member, Fiona Scott MP visited Spunky Monkeys Early Learning Centre, a key child care provider in the electorate, before visiting a robotics project, being undertaken at Caroline Chisolm College, Glenmore Park. Spunky Monkeys Lemongrove is one of seven local child care centres owned and run by Kareena and Michael Gale. Minister Birmingham and Fiona Scott MP toured their facility where they met with staff and parents. The visit highlighted how the Turnbull Government is ensuring high-quality education starts from a young age, and that children have access to a quality learning experience. The Government is implementing reforms to support parents who want or need to work, or who want to work more. Minister Birmingham said many of the families and children from Spunky Monkeys stand to benefit from the Turnbull Government’s $3 billion child care reform package with more accessible, affordable and fairer child care. “We’ll push for the new parliament to pass the savings needed to pay for our child care reforms and ensure there is adequate time for the changes to be implemented across the country,” Minister Birmingham said. “We will provide greater support for people on lower incomes by lifting the rebate from 50 per cent up to 85 per cent and we will address the previous Labor Government’s freeze on the child care rebate cap. That means removing the cap altogether for families earning less than around $180,000 and lifting it from $7,500 per year to $10,000 for families earning above that.” Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott MP said, “Kareena and the Spunky Monkeys team are one of a number of high quality child care facilities across the Lindsay electorate. They play a vital role in providing quality care for our youngsters while families are out working. In this electorate we have over 39% of couples with dependent children and around 13% of single parent households. That is why the Turnbull Government treats this issue seriously”. After Spunky Monkeys, Minister Birmingham and Fiona Scott MP visited Caroline Chisolm College. College Principal, Gregory Elliott featured a dozen young women students who demonstrated their computer programming ability with a robotics display. The students are currently working with Western Sydney University to develop and programme robots which can remotely retrieve packages in a real cityscape. They plan to enter their robots into a competition demonstrating these abilities. “The Government is committed to restoring the focus on education in STEM subjects in both primary and secondary schools. Through our leadership, students will better engage with STEM subjects, to ensure our workforce has the STEM skills needed for a global economy,” Minister Birmingham said. Fiona Scott MP added, “This is an example of local students learning about the technologies of tomorrow. The programme is a credit to Greg and his team and is one of many examples in high schools across the Lindsay electorate. ”When people ask what is actually happening when we talk about an ‘innovation corridor’, here is an example taking place right now in our high schools,” Fiona Scott said. 1/2 Lemon, Grated Zest 250g Ricotta 1 Free-Range Egg, Beaten 2 Tsp Grated Parmesan 150g Cannelloni, About 14 Tubes 2 x 125g Mozzarella Balls, Sliced

Preheat the oven to 180C/gas 4. Put the spinach and a drizzle of olive oil in a large pan over a low heat. Add the nutmeg, season with salt and pepper, cover and leave to sweat. Help the kids to stir it occasionally until the spinach has cooked down. Place in a bowl and set to one side to cool a little. In the same pan, heat a drizzle of olive oil and gently sweat the onion until soft. Add the garlic, tomatoes, bay leaf, a few basil leaves and lemon zest and let it gently simmer for 20 minutes until the sauce has thickened. Season with salt and pepper. Have the kids squeeze the moisture out of the spinach into the bowl. Place the spinach on a board so you can chop it up. Return the spinach to the liquid in the bowl and get the kids to stir in the ricotta, beaten egg and parmesan. Season to taste. Sit the piping bag in a jug, fold its edges over the rim, then spoon in the spinach mixture. Have the kids help pipe the mixture into the cannelloni tubes and lay them in a 20cm x 25cm oven dish. Spread the tomato sauce over the cannelloni. Scatter over most of the basil, lay the mozzarella slices on top, drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil and season. Place in the oven and cook for 35–40 minutes or till the top is golden and the pasta tender (if the top browns too fast, cover the dish with foil). Remove from the oven and let stand for a few minutes before serving with the remaining basil.

Mulgoa Senior School Leadership Students Visit NSW Parliament House and Thomas Hassall Anglican College, were acknowledged directly by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. Students watched Tanya Davies deliver a Private Members Statement to the Parliament on Education Scholarships, followed by a personal tour of Parliament House. The students then watched question time in the Legislative Assembly Chamber and got to see the Premier and Ministers in action. Marguerite Mahr of the Leaders Elect of Nepean Christian School said “It is refreshing to hear the personal side of politics; you don’t get to see that from the media. It is also great to see how seriously politicians take the concerns of their communities, as well as the effort taken to address those issues and serve in their role.” Glenmore Park High School’s Senior Leadership Representatives Natasha Zahra and Emilia Rance also weighed in on their experience of the Leadership Forum. “It was a very interesting and enjoyable day. I feel like I have a wider knowledge of Parliament,” said Miss Zahra. “I found it insightful into the roles of politicians, it was good to learn what they actually do and watch them debate,” said Miss Rance.

Shoulder Pain – Could it be Arthritis? Many people visit the clinic with shoulder issues. Shoulder injuries and pain commonly result from many types of acute & chronic trauma, as well as many other medical conditions. Acute muscles & tendons injuries, slap tears, dislocations, as well as chronic injuries from repetitive strain & bursitis, are all common. It is important that the reason for shoulder pain is appropriately diagnosed. Then physical therapies can often help. Sometimes an operation may be required to re-attach tendons correct joint & capsule issues etc. On occasions what seems like a simple shoulder problem that should respond well to physical therapy does not. In these instances ongoing shoulder pain may not be driven only by the original injury. Here autoimmune processes should be considered as a possible cause. A real life example often best helps to illustrate this. Recently a client presented with two sore shoulders. There is ultrasound evidence of slight ‘wear & tear’ in the swollen tendons of her shoulder muscles, plus extensive bursitis. Pain is mainly in the front of both shoulders, the left is worse. She has very limited range of motion especially of the left arm due to the pain. The pain came on after a workers-comp return-to-work test for shoulder strength. The client is treated with muscle elongation therapy, techniques for several weeks. She has some improvement in pain & range of motion, but this is limited and does not improve further. She is advised that an autoimmune disorder may be at play here, and that diet may be important to her recovery. She initially does not want to make any changes and several weeks of extra therapy sees no further improvement. Eventually the client agrees to make the advised key dietary changes. Within one week of implementing dietary changes she has close to full range of motion and is very relieved. So how does this work? Simply put‌ making key dietary changes helped to calm immune activation in the gut and produced almost immediate results in her shoulders. If you have unresolved shoulder (or neck) pain, why not come talk to us at BHW - see our ad for contact details. Possible causes of pain in the shoulder: • Rotator cuff injuries • Rotator cuff tendonitis • Frozen shoulder • Thoracic outlet syndrome • Osteoarthritis

Bursitis Tendon sheath inflammation Tendonitis Fibromyalgia Subarachnoid haemorrhage Ankylosing spondylitis Heart Attack Slipped disk Dislocations Ectopic pregnancy Rheumatoid & Juvenile arthritis Gout SLE

COUNSELLING CORNER Article Written + Submitted by: Linda Cassell from Psychology Works 4 All P: 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 E: lindacassell@bigpond.com
The Number 1 Relationship Killer When there’s a problem in a relationship, couples try to talk about it. If they can talk about it in a way that resolves the problem, all is well. If they can’t talk about it in a way that resolves the problem, all is not well. When they can’t talk about the problem successfully, it is usually because of one thing. They are trying to win. Wanting to win causes them to argue about the problem rather than discussing it in a calm and objective manner. They have a need to be right. The need to win is the one thing that is most likely to destroy a relationship. “It’s you,” one partner will say to the other. “You are the cause of the problem. You just can’t see it.” “No, it’s you,” the other partner will respond. “You’re wrong and you don’t want to admit it. All my friends agree with me.” In order to reach a resolution of any problem, couples have to give up the need to be right. In order to give up that need, they must understand the psychological underpinnings of that need. They must understand that the need to be right comes from an unhealthy place that causes them to be rigid in their thinking and blocked in their emotions. To one degree or another, they hold on to this need as if their very lives depended on it. If you can overcome the need to win, you will get to a completely different place than you have ever been. You’ll know when you get there, because you’ll have a completely different attitude about your relationship and a completely different goal. Your goal now is not to win. Your goal is to find the solution, no matter what it is. You are like a scientist whose only concern is to find the right answer, no matter what it is and no matter who is right and who is wrong. Even if your original theory proves to be wrong, you are ready to accept the solution, because the solution will resolve the conflict and bring closeness. That is your ultimate aim now, to build closeness, trust, love and mutual respect.
