Community Champions

The secret is out – the students of Glenmore Park Public School are now officially ‘Community Champions’ and they have the certificate to prove it.

In a remarkable example of community support the members of the school’s SRC committee held a Disco in June and donated the takings – $455 in total – to local charity WestCare Community Services. Michelle Epati, manager of WestCare’s Emergency Relief Service, recently visited the school to present the members of the SRC with a certificate to acknowledge their generous donation and community mindedness.

She explained how the money will be used to purchase goods for their Care Pack service and brought along one of the packs to show the students.

“We provide these Care Packs to members of the Nepean Hospital social welfare team who work closely with needy mums involved in prenatal or post natal emergencies and also for newborn babies who go directly into foster care”, said Mrs Epati. “It is definitely one of the most precious things WestCare is involved with and to have this support from the students of GPPS makes it extra special in our view!

I’d also like to acknowledge the staff including Natalie Watson and Julie Dickinson who helped coordinate this.”

Fruit Corner, located at the Glenmore Park Town Centre, next to the TAB, opened on the 23rd of August. Owners Sid Sandhu and Ranbir Dhillon are excited to bring fresh fruit and vegetables to the community. “We are proud to bring fresh produce to the area. It’s sourced daily and we’re in contact with local farmers.

We think it’s important to support the local community” said Owner Sid. Fruit Corner offers a great variety of produce. They stock select groceries and those hard to find unique items for specialised cooking, including gourmet items. They can also source and supply special items on request.

Sid and Ranbir are joined by Rachel, Anna and Teisha, who are all local residents. The Owners were committed to employ staff from the local area.

Jesus Brings Compassion One of the great joys of being a part of Glenmore Park Anglican Church is that we are able to make a real difference in people’s lives, not just in Glenmore Park and the surrounding suburbs but also throughout the world!

Through the Christian organisation “Compassion,” the people in our Church have been able to sponsor almost 100 children in the mountainous village of Kabanjahe on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia. This is a simple, practical way to make a difference with the huge problem of child poverty. However, this sponsorship is more than giving money. It involves connecting with the people of the whole village through letter writing, prayer, encouragement and practical gifts. It is a positive way to make a difference among the whole community of around 8,000 people who live in this village by working to positively impact problems of health, education and nutrition.

In October, we get to take an even bigger step as a team of 8 people from our Church will be going to Kabanjahe to visit the children and families that we have been sponsoring. The team will be led by our Children’s Minister, Edward Frost and his wife Rebecca. They will be spending 2 weeks meeting some of the children we sponsor, as well as deepening the connection with

the people of the village by giving practical help and sharing something of the difference that Jesus makes to our lives.

God is full of compassion and care, and at Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we want to take seriously what God says to us in the Bible, “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” (1 John 3:17-18) God has been so good to us so we want to share some of this with others, especially those in great need. We know God is bringing a great hope and future; what a privilege it is for us to be able to be a part of His work!

New Batting Cages for Surveyors Creek Softball Complex

State MP for Mulgoa Tanya Davies with Loretta Watts and her daughter Stephanie

State MP for Mulgoa Tanya Davies, last month visited the Penrith City Softball Association’s fields at Surveyors Creek in Glenmore Park to inspect their newly built batting cages, ready for use in the upcoming softball season commencing in September. Tanya Davies was hosted by the Association’s President Loretta Watts and her daughter Stephanie, an accomplished pitcher. Tanya was impressed with the quality and size of the purpose built new facility.

“I am delighted to see the tangible results of the NSW Government’s financial support via the Community Building

Partnership grant program in joint venture with Penrith City Council. These grants provide our local communities with muchneeded facilities such as these batting cages at the Surveyors Creek Softball Complex in Glenmore Park” said Tanya Davies.

Due to the high costs involved in constructing these purpose built batting cages, Penrith City Softball Association would not be able to fund the new facility without the financial assistance of State and Local Governments.

“We are so happy with the support we got from the NSW Government and Penrith City Council to have these batting cages built. It means so much to our players, especially our juniors, to be able to get batting practice done in the safety and convenience of these confined and fenced off batting cages” said Loretta Watts.

“Penrith Council is pleased to provide joint funding with the NSW State Government and Penrith City Softball Association for these batting cages, which will see numerous benefits for the more than 1000 association members that call Surveyors Creek home.” said Penrith Council Mayor Ross Fowler, OAM. The cost for the batting cages totalled $63,300; with NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Grant program contributing $29,800, Penrith City Council contributing $29,681.82 and the Penrith City Softball Association contributing $3,818.18.

“The batting cages will help ensure that training programs that have already led to elite level participation with two Australian representatives and 14 other state players from the association, will be enhanced. It will also minimise diamond and field usage time by the association allowing a better game day surface and increase open space on the fields for general casual community use” said Mayor Ross Fowler OAM.

Building a Peaceful World As I write this column in mid-August with the death toll in Gaza rising daily and conflict raging in Ukraine and elsewhere, the world has just commemorated the occasion one hundred years ago when Britain declared war on Germany: thus began the largest conflict the world had yet known. Sadly, the scale of this conflict was to be surpassed by another world war which would begin a quarter of a century later. The commemoration is a fitting opportunity to reflect on the role each of us can play in building a world in which peace is the dominant force.

It is all too easy to be dismissive of our ability to contribute to world peace by asking: what can I do to make the world a more peaceful place if I’m a person of no great power or influence? I’m not like those politicians and diplomats who wield so much power and who hold sway over decisions to start or end a war. How can I possibly make a difference? The point is this: peace begins with each of us and the little decisions we make on a daily basis to build a more just and loving world.

The Church, in one of its documents from the Second Vatican Council in 1965 (Gaudium et Spes – “Joy and Hope�), stated famously: “Peace is not merely the absence of war.� This makes a great deal of sense. If peace was merely the absence of war then it would be equally valid to say that love is merely the absence of hatred. We know that this is not so. Imagine saying “I don’t hate you� to someone you love in place of “I love you.� The relationship would not be a long-lasting one! A truly flourishing, loving relationship requires an effort to show love, to make love manifest through

actions. Not showing hatred is not proof of love, it is proof of indifference.

The Second Vatican Council made the point that the cause of peace is furthered when justice is sought after and, even more so, when love is predominant for “peace is the fruit of love.� Ultimately, peace is best brought about when we show love in the same manner as Jesus showed it, actively loving all whom we encounter and resisting the impulse for revenge whenever it arises. As Gaudium et Spes stated: “That earthly peace which arises from love of neighbour symbolises and results from the peace of Christ which radiates from God the Father.�

How often we feel a desire for retribution, even in small circumstances such as road rage or workplace or domestic disagreements! How often too we detect a restlessness within ourselves that conveys to us the reality that we are not at peace, even within our own skin! If we are to make a more peaceful world we need to be at peace within ourselves, asking God to implant in us through his Spirit a desire to actively show love to others at all times and to avoid the temptation to seek vengeance when we are wronged and so perpetuate the destructive cycle of violence we witness so often in the world, on both a small and large scale.

The dream of a peaceful world might seem a long way from coming to fruition but if we are cynical about the possibility of such a world existing it is worthwhile asking the question: “Am I doing my part to build a peaceful world through my words and actions each day?�

Nepean Valley RSL Day Club Celebrates 1st Birthday The Nepean Valley RSL Day Club celebrated their 1st Birthday last month with a celebratory lunch and cake cutting at the Macquarie room, Penrith RSL. Day Clubs are a weekly social program for older people from both ex-service and the wider community. Day Clubs offer social support and friendship to older people who are still living in the community but who are unable to attend more active programs. Many Day Club members believe they are healthier, happier and more active due to their involvement in their Club. Day Clubs are entirely run by volunteers with the support of the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), NSW Office and the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL), (NSW Branch). Leura Gardens Festival Celebrations Garden lovers of all ages are invited to visit Leura this October to help the popular Leura Gardens Festival celebrate 50 years of showcasing spring in the Upper Blue Mountains.

This year’s festival will take place from Saturday, October 4 to Sunday October 12, and feature 11 wonderful gardens, some of which took part in the original festival and some of which are new to the festival, as well as the return of several old favourites.

There will also be an associated programme of events including a Music Festival, Art Show and horticultural talks by respected presenters, including well-known horticulturists, writer and speaker, Jennifer Stackhouse.

The Music Festival is on every afternoon from 1:00pm and will cover everything from jazz to barbershop to opera. The many popular performers taking part include the Orpheus Quartette, Silver Fox and the Penrith City Harmony Chorus.

Visitors can also take advantage of the excellent prices at the festival plant sales centre, which will offer a wide range of plants including the special 50-year celebration souvenir, a gorgeous yellow daisy named “Leura Gold”.

Whether you are a first-time visitor to the festival or one of the many people from all over Australia who come back year after year, there will be much for you to experience and enjoy, and, as well, you are supporting a very worthy cause.

The Leura Gardens Festival was born in 1965, with the aim of raising money to purchase equipment for the Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial Hospital. The festival has now raised the grand sum of over $2 million for the local hospital and donations are also made to other local healthrelated charities including Blue Mountains Health Trust, Can Assist and Blue Mountains Cancer Help.

Soul Matters Glenmore Park is far from the wreckage of MH17 (the Malaysian Airlines flight shot down over the Ukraine) – unless you knew someone on that flight, making it tragically close. The more TV footage we watch the more we need to make sense of it because we could have been on that flight – or our mum, uncle or son. But it doesn’t make sense! How can it fit as part of our normal frame of life here in Glenmore Park? It doesn’t!

It’s out there, away somewhere, a different frame, a different life, not ours! The same can be said for the war in Gaza, terrorism, HIVAIDS, natural disasters like tsunamis, a stillborn child, or the loss of physical or mental health.

While we can’t make sense of MH17, it’s harder and harder to bury our heads in the sand about things that happen in the world or cause our lives to spin out of control. Over two thousand years ago Jesus predicted the “out there” things we see in the world today, and provided an “out there” frame on life to help people find peace and hope for the future.

On a recent family trip to the snow we experienced a white-out while driving up the side of a mountain. The only thing stopping us from freaking out and crashing over the side was a row of red poles along the road at the cliff edge. Jesus predicted a series of events, like markers to watch for, or red poles. Amongst other things he predicted the destruction and occupation of Jerusalem (which took place historically), and the increase of earthly distress.

This included terrifying natural disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis, epidemics, and events caused by hatred and evil in the human heart like wars and MH17 (which is clearly increasing today).

Jesus taught that those who believe in Him should not be afraid, but simply recognise the red poles as a confirmation that He knew what he was talking about, and move forward into the future with hope and peace. This confidence came from the final red pole: before “the end” of life as we know it on earth, Jesus will return with God’s power, glory, and love to rescue humanity from the carnage that has resulted from evil in the hearts of people.

This might seem a bit “out there”, but so is what is happening in our world! Only with an “out there” frame can we even start to make sense of MH17 and other things that spin us out of control. They just don’t fit into our normal Glenmore Park existence.

Is this all doom and gloom? No more so than is real in the world around us. What it does do is provide perspective, “frame”, light, hope, and an interpretive lens for starting to understand. It invites us to see that God has not left the world to its inevitable self-destruction, but out of sheer love has a plan in place to save us through Jesus. It is an invitation to abandon our lives to Him in faith and trust. It points to God’s activity every day to heal, love, guide, restore and bring peace to the lives of people who welcome him to do so. And it is an invitation to thank God if you enjoy health, peace, and life in Glenmore Park.

Mulgoa Senior School Leadership Forum Visit NSW Parliament House Tanya Davies MP, State Member for Mulgoa, was thrilled by the success of the Mulgoa Senior School Leadership Forum last month.

19 students from local high schools attended the Leadership Forum at NSW Parliament House in August, and had the opportunity to discuss leadership with The Hon Shelley Hancock MP, Speaker of the Legislative Assembly and The Hon Anthony Roberts MP, Minister for Resources and Energy.

The forum is an annual event initiated by Tanya Davies to inspire senior school students to think more broadly about leadership in our community. “It is also an opportunity for me to recognize the hard work that school captains and leaders give to their school communities�

Tanya Davies said.

The students from Penrith Anglican College, Caroline Chisholm College, St Clair High School, Colyton High School Trade School, Nepean Christian School and Glenmore Park High School were acknowledged by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The students then watched question time in the Legislative Assembly Chamber and got to see the Premier and government Ministers in action.

Tanya Davies was impressed by the students' ideas and questions that were shared. "The students were great representatives of the talent in Mulgoa and they asked some interesting questions of the Members of Parliament" Tanya Davies said. “It was a fantastic day, I gained a lot of information and knowledge from the various speakers. It’s opened my eyes to the roles of our politicians in parliament.� said Miss Brittany Reeves of Penrith Anglican College. “From what I’ve seen today, I now want to run for School

Captain� said one of the Glenmore Park High School students.

Tanya Davies then gave the students a personal tour of Parliament House, treating them to a rare and very special event; the witnessing of a joint sitting of Parliament to swear in its newest Member into the NSW Legislative Council.

"I believe in our young people and their aspirations for themselves and their wider school and local communities" said Tanya Davies.

"It is important that our young leaders have an insight into how their government functions. This experience may have opened their eyes to wider possibilities for their own futures.

I hope that the Forum challenged our young leaders to be confident, courageous, passionate and disciplined leaders to continue to make a difference in their communities" said Tanya Davies.

Parents who come to my groups hear me say quite often…

“What is the most POSITIVE thing I can do, to GUIDE and EDUCATE my child, to teach him/her new SKILLS and BEHAVIOURS, and maintain the RELATIONSHIP?” It’s a prompt that I wrote for parents to guide them in growing up their children.

Recently, in one of the groups, a parent asked…

“What can I do about a child interrupting whilst I’m speaking to someone? He does it all of the time.”

Why do children interrupt?

Because what they have to say is the most important thing to them at this point in time. Children are egocentric, they do believe that whole world revolves around them. They are not deliberately being selfish, it’s part of their brain development, and if you think about it it’s a survival tactic. They get excited about what they want to say. They want to say it quickly because if they don’t say it right now they might forget and everyone will miss out on hearing their wisdom. It’s not because they are rude or stupid.

Why do we have to constantly remind our kids about some of our rules and values? Because they are kids. Because when they get excited, they forget about the rules and social niceties.

Because their logical and rational brain is not fully developed.

Dr Becky Bailey, a clinical psychologist in the USA says that we have to remind our kids of the rules up to 2,000 times, for each rule. That’s a lot of reminding, but that’s part of the job of being a parent.

So, let’s break down our problem with the child interrupting using the above prompt…

Most positive thing?

Being kind, caring, and supportive.

Guide and educate?

Give the child a hand signal to stop.

Relationship?

Look the child in the eye to let him know you’ve heard him. Draw him in close for a side hug, or softly touch his shoulder.

New skills and behaviours?

At the first available moment, acknowledge his excitement and gently remind the child that he interrupted and remind him of what to do instead.

Say, “Hey I know you are keen to tell me something, but you interrupted the conversation between Dad and I, next time please say ‘excuse me’ “.

Now, in this instance the young fella has ADHD, which means he has trouble with hyperactivity, impulse control, memory, organisation, and focus. And a lot of kids with ADHD also have anxiety. So we added the additional strategy of teaching him to write down on his white board what he needs to tell Mum so he doesn’t get anxious about forgetting it.

Of course, if it’s an emergency, like the stove has caught fire or the baby has climbed onto the change table and is about to nose dive off it, then we don’t mind our kids interrupting us. Do we?

That’s a whole lot better than calling our kids ‘rude’ (a putdown), screaming at them for interrupting, and telling them to go away. What do they learn when this approach is used? How does it make them feel? How likely are they to want to come and tell you something if this is the reaction they always get?

Mcdonald’s Community Facility Grants Program Now Open For Glenmore’s Cricketers Members of the Glenmore cricket community are being invited to apply for funding for major projects through the McDonald’s Community Facility Grants Program.

The primary purpose of the 2014/15 fund is to improve playing and practice facilities, which includes the development and expansion of practice facilities, the establishment and repair of synthetic and turf wickets, as well as improvements to amenities.

Applications must be submitted by 5pm, Tuesday 30 September 2014 and all projects must be completed by 31 December 2015. Funding is available up to a maximum of 25% of the total cost of the project.

Game Development General Manager - NSW/ACT, Cameron French, said the Grants Program would help to provide valuable infrastructure for cricket communities around the State. “The McDonald’s Community Facility Grants Program is designed to support councils, clubs, schools and associations in providing facilities that will help develop and foster cricket in their local communities,� he said. “In 2013/14 we were able to support 27 projects from all over the State, ranging from Albury, Armidale, Wagga Wagga in regional NSW to Lane Cove, Bangor, Ryde, Waverley and Drummoyne in metropolitan Sydney,� he added.

McDonald’s Glenmore Park licensee, Ian Garton, said their support of the Community Facility Grants Program was just one way in which the partnership with Cricket NSW encourages and inspires local cricket players and communities.

Local Nightlife Under Spotlight Nature enthusiasts of all ages are invited to take part in a great nocturnal school holiday activity.

Penrith City Council, along with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), will be holding Night Nature Walks at Agnes Banks Nature Reserve and Mulgoa Nature Reserve in the September/October school holidays.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the night walks, led by ranger guides, would foster an appreciation of what local nature reserves have to offer.

“The local NPWS ranger and a council biodiversity officer will show participants how to spot nocturnal animals living in the local area,” Cr Fowler said. “They will go in search of housing for these creatures and learn how they survive in the bush.”

The Night Nature Walks are recommended for children six to 12 years of age, with their families. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

The walks will be approximately 1.5km return, on easygraded tracks. Spotlights and a light supper of hot chocolate, marshmallows and biscuits will be provided, but participants are required to bring their own torch.

The Night Nature Walks will be held at Agnes Banks Nature Reserve on Wednesday 24 September and Mulgoa Nature Reserve on Wednesday 1 October, between 7pm and 9pm. The Tragedy of Suicide Contrary to what many believe, your life can appear perfect and you can still be depressed. Last month we mourned the death of Robin Williams, a man who struggled with the massive burden of depression so deeply that he simply could not find a way out, and took his own life.

While the world loved and saw a man full of talent and life, an actor whose work brought joy and tears and inspiration and understanding, he had a pain that was unbearable and unexplainable. You can be wealthy and still struggle with what Winston Churchill famously termed his “black dog”. You can have fame and fortune and love and admiration, and take your life.

Robin Williams did.

To the healthy, suicide makes no sense. To those on the outside of the intense pain and emptiness, the idea of ending one’s own life is horrific. This is as it should be.

But to those who have experienced that darkness and the feeling of unending despair, suicide can appear like the only way out of the pain.

Depression is a terrible illness that shows up in many ways.

Some struggle with it their entire life, and for others depression manifests itself after a massive life change or trauma. Depression can be brought on by pregnancy or medical conditions.

We who sit and wonder at the reason behind a death by suicide will never be satisfied, because we will never fully understand. The Truth about Debt Agreements You’ve seen and heard the ads. “Smash your Debts Today!”, “Reduce Debt in Minutes”, “Eliminate your Debt” and dozens of other variations of the same theme touted by companies offering free debt help. It all sounds great when you feel like you’re drowning financially, but the cost of this help is often way more than anyone bargained for.

The way that these “Debt Help” companies operate in most cases is to contact your current creditors, advise them that you are in financial difficulty and then propose a “Debt Agreement” between them and you under which they accept payment of an amount substantially lower than the outstanding balance to clear the debt. Once this agreement is in place with each creditor, the amounts are consolidated into a personal loan and the creditors are paid out.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? No more harassing phone calls, debts are reduced and repayments are lower, what could possibly be wrong with that?

What most people don’t realise is that a Debt Agreement is an act of bankruptcy. In proposing a Debt Agreement you are declaring yourself personally insolvent and your personal details will be recorded in the National Personal Insolvency Index (NPII).

Once listed on the NPII your details and the details of your Debt Agreement appear on your credit file and are available as part of the public record. Getting any form of credit is then near impossible and these records are also available to prospective Employers.

So whilst Debt Agreements have their place, they should be used only as a last resort and only once you fully understand the implications which last for many years into the future.

RSPCA Cupcake Day Was a Huge Success

A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA. We hosted a Cupcake Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on Monday 18th August 2014.

Thank you to everyone who came in and donated and ate a cupcake or two. Also a huge thank you for the online donations. We raised $700.00 for the RSPCA with your help.

Sheridan, Rachel, Stacey, Carly, Eden, Lizzie and Renai cooked up a storm and provided the most delicious peppermint slice, Mars Bar and Malteser slice, and cupcakes.

The Pupcakes were made from the Hills WD science diet baked into cupcakes and iced with peanut butter. Pony, Bella and Callie loved eating the Pupcakes! Thanks again for supporting a great cause!

Animals should not eat cupcakes unless they are specially made with safe, animal friendly ingredients. Chocolate is especially toxic to many animals!

Remember, Pupcakes are special treats and shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be fed to your dog regularly!

This recipe makes around 12-14 Pupcakes.

Ingredients 2 ž cups water Ÿ cup unsweetened apple sauce Ÿ cup oats 4 cups wholemeal flour 1 cup fresh diced apple 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 cage free egg, beaten slightly 4 tablespoons honey Method Preheat oven to 175 degrees Celsius. Spray muffin tins with cooking oil.

Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly. Combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients slowly and mix well.

Pour into muffin tins and bake for 25-30 minutes.

Once the Pupcakes have cooled, you can ice the Pupcakes with smooth peanut butter.
