Thirty two students from years 8, 9 and 10 at Glenmore Park High worked for 10 weeks on the 12 minute musical theatre production where zombies desdended on the suburbs. Flannofest allows high school drama students to experience a taste of the theatre industry by working with professional actors, directors and technicians to create unique pieces of theatre.

One of the competition judges was the AFI-winning comedian/actor/writer Craig Anderson from the Double the Fist TV show. Drama teacher Paul Appleby and music teacher Greg Hebblewhite were delighted with the win. David Bradbury, MP, presented the awards and congratulated the students on their hard work and creative success.

Padre Pio Parish A man is walking down a sandy beach and comes across an old bottle.

He picks it up, pulls out the cork and out pops a genie! The genie says, “Thank you for freeing me from the bottle. In return I will grant you three wishes.”

The man says “Great! I always dreamed of this and I know exactly what I want. First, I want one billion dollars in a Swiss bank account.”

Poof! There is a flash of light and a piece of paper with account numbers appears in his hand! He continues, “Next, I want a brand new red Ferrari right here.” Poof! There is a flash of light and a bright red, brand-new Ferrari appears right next to him! He continues, “Finally, I want to be irresistible to women.” Poof! There is a flash of light and he turns into a box of chocolates.

With an election looming, politicians are like genies making promises of what they can give you if you vote for them. Some are standing outside shopping centres offering balloons to babies and shaking hands with strangers in an attempt to convince us that they are nice people. But it is not enough to be a “nice person”.

What is important is a person’s integrity and character. It is amazing if you think about it, how often these political promises are broken once the term of office is secured and also more amazing how what was promised is not always what is received.

One of the most important factors in this election should not be “What will I get from whichever party?” but “What will this particular person or party contribute to the well-being of all Australian citizens?”

One of the most disturbing elements for me in pondering which party will do the best for its citizens is the fact that some representatives admit to not believing in God! This is insulting not just to God but to the majority of Australian citizens who, at the last census claimed to believe in God - a Divine Being, One who is interested in what happens to us.

As Christians we believe that this Divine Being loves us so much that He sent His Son to show us how much we are loved and made the ultimate sacrifice of His life for us. Whether we believe it or not, we are subject to His reign and at the end of our life we will be asked to give an account of what we have done with what is entrusted to us.

A politician is a person who aspires

to satisfy the majority of the people that they will do a good job of administering the government of an area for the good not just of this generation, but those to follow. It is incomprehensible to entrust government to a person or party that does not believe that they have a responsibility beyond the term of their office. We as a population also have a responsibility to ensure that our elected representatives understand their role is subservient to God. Decision makers need to understand that they are ultimately responsible to the Creator for the management of the resources and gifts that He has entrusted to us (humanity) and for all generations to come. Before you cast your vote on August 21, please pray that the person who is elected will serve God first, country second and his/her own interests last.

Glenmore Park Primary School Students Cheyenne, Kristal, Jesse and Lachlan graduated from the “Panthers on the Prowl” program and really enjoyed the program in Term 2. This is an iniative of the Penrith Panthers to support primary & secondary age students. The program promotes resilience, confidence, positive relationships and problem solving with young people.

Students Candice Wall & Daniel Ilinsky are starting young and looking to the future as Junior Councillors.

Penrith Council runs the Junior Mayor program annually. Students in Year 6 make a submission to council as to why they would like to be selected as Junior councillors. It’s a great opportunity for students to gain first hand experience about how our local council plays an important part in delivering services and infrastructure for the city of Penrith.

Daniel and Candice will visit the council chambers and spend time talking to the Mayor of Penrith and participate in a council meeting.

150th Anniversary Luddenham Public School Luddenham Public School is turning 150 this year so we are having a big celebration at the school on the 15th of August.

There will be a big street parade, followed by lots of activities at the school. These include pony rides, wood chopping, old fashioned games, a white elephant store, a BBQ, Devonshire Teas, sheep shearing, vintage car and tractor display and market stalls. There will be a room full of history, a modern classroom full of technology and a Bear Display.

Spring in the Garden Spring is a good month for planting a vegetable garden but you will need the following - sunshine for most of the day, well prepared and well drained soil and water. The vegetable rows should run north to south and taller veggies should be planted where they will not cast too much shadow on the other veggies. You need a good friable soil.

Sandy soil can be improved by constantly adding as much compost and bagged animal manure as possible, and by digging in finished crops unless the ground is needed for another crop.

Clay soil can be improved with gypsum working in 2 -3 cups per sq metre along with compost and bagged animal manure. This can be repeated every 6 months or so.

After planting out your vegetables, water them in well.

Seasol and harvest are beneficial for keeping your veggies healthy and strong and should be watered on regularly. Always mulch with sugarcane mulch or lucerne, and this will help keep out the weeds as well as hold in the moisture.

Beware frosts can still occur in early September so you may need to delay sowing and planting tender vegetables unless you can protect them frost. At risk are young beans, capsicums, egg plants, tomatoes and all members of the pumpkin family. A frost when peas are flowering will affect the amount of peas produced.

With the ever increasing costs associated living why not consider starting your own veggie patch. Herbs and fruit trees are also beneficial, and with regular care and maintenance you will have home grown produce to share with your family and friends.

Glenmore Park’s Troy to do ‘The Full Monty’ A group of Penrith residents, including Troy Lennon from Glenmore Park, are getting ready to bare it all; on stage and in front of a live audience. Luke Spiteri, Jeff Cefai, Mike Raymond and Troy Lennon are playing lead characters in Penrith Musical Comedy Company’s upcoming production of The Full Monty.

This production, to be staged at Penrith’s Q Theatre, is an Americanised, musical version of the hit 1997 movie. It follows a group of men who, in an attempt to make some money after the closure of the steel mill, decide to stage a strip show that will be better than the professional Chippendales because they will strip ‘all the way’. And yes, Luke, Jeff, Mike and Troy, along with other members in the cast, will be going “the full monty” in the final scene of the show.

“I feel pretty good about it,” Luke said, “It’s all for a laugh, so I’m not taking myself too seriously.” Troy is feeling similarly relaxed about the ‘big moment.’ “I’m fine,” he said, “I’m more worried about what the audience will think rather than what I think”.

The four actors have been rehearsing for their roles as amateur strippers for two months and have been impressed by the professionalism and talent of the cast. “There is a great depth of singing talent in the cast,” said Troy.

Stephen was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy in 1995. This disease slowly deteriorates the muscles in the body eventually forcing the suffering into a wheelchair. Stephen uses an electric scooter and a manual wheelchair to maintain independence, however, his condition has deteriorated further in the past year and he is no longer able to use his manual wheelchair without assistance.

Stephen is only 39 years of age with 2 young children, aged 3 and 9, he values his independence immensely.

Wrap with Love Over forty students and teachers at Caroline Chisholm College were involved in a project aimed at providing blankets to people all over the world suffering from extreme cold and exposed to the elements through natural disasters such as earthquakes, mudslides and hurricanes. The team of knitters gathered twice a week to learn the basic skills of knitting for squares sewn together to form blankets. Nine blankets will be forwarded to the local Rotary Club who will organise for them to go to the Cold Humanity warehouse where they will be distributed to those most in need.

Pony’s DNA Test Results Are In!!!

Last month I sent a cheek swab of my puppy ‘Pony’ to BITSA (Breed Identification Through Scientific Analysis) as I was curious as to what breed of dog he is. BITSA uses enhanced DNA analysis to identify your dog’s breed.

Well the wait is finally over and Pony is now confirmed as a Great Dane cross Bull Mastiff!!! Yay!! I was so excited, I was hoping for a pony and I sure got one!

The Great Danes and Bull mastiffs both grow to about 45-60kg and are 70-85cm high at the shoulder. So Pony is going to be a big boy.

The DNA results for Pony also included a list of potential health issues for his breed, i.e. breed predisposition. Great Danes and Bullmastiffs are more likely than other breeds to get certain heart diseases, eye diseases, hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, elbow

dysplasia, and bloat. Bloat or gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is a life threatening condition when the stomach fills with air (dilatation) and then twists upon itself (volvulus). The deep chest of the Great Danes and Bullmastiffs make them more prone to this disease.

Bloat is a devastating disease as once the stomach twists upon itself the blood vessels become constricted and the stomach loses its blood supply. An emergency surgery is required to decompress the stomach and resupply the stomach with blood. Unfortunately sometimes the lack of blood to the stomach means that part of the stomach has to be removed surgically.

Sometimes the intestines or spleen also become twisted and they may have to also be surgically removed.

Even with the emergency surgery, dogs with bloat can still die.

Fortunately, as I now know what breed Pony is and that he is predisposed to get bloat, then I will now perform a preventative surgery called a gastropexy when I desex him. A gastropexy is a surgical procedure that attaches the stomach to the inside of the abdominal wall, which prevents the stomach twisting upon itself.

Breed Predispositions

So enough about Pony, what about my dog I hear you say! A variety of breeds have predisposed health conditions, for example: German shepherds – hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, and haemangiosarcoma.

Labradors - hip and elbow dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy.

Dachshund – slipped discs.

Border collie – collie specific eye disease (collie eye anomaly).

West Highland White Terriers – hyperadrenocorticism, hypoadrenocorticism, copper storage disease and skin allergies.

Poodle – diabetes and clotting disorders.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel – heart disease and hypothyrpoidism.

Burmese cat – diabetes.

Siamese cat – clotting disorders.

Council makes family tree research easier Penrith City Library is helping family tree research with the installation of a new Kodak Reader Printer, which allows scans of olden day newspapers to be instantly saved as digital files.

The Kodak DSV 3000 Reader Printer is worth more than $24,400 and was bought through the Library Development Grant Program run by the NSW Government and the Library Council of NSW. Library members can use the device at Penrith’s main branch at the Civic Centre for free and training is provided. The device features an A3 screen – a big improvement on the A4 size screen of the predecessor reader.

Penrith City Mayor Kevin Crameri said: “It’s a great tool to help research

your family tree, which usually involves checking death notices and obituaries such as in the Sydney Morning Herald. We’ve been trialling the training for the device over the past month and several people have taken up the offer to be trained.
