Meet the Gerber Family Anthony Gerber, with his wife Katie, has recently joined the Ministry Team at our Church as the Minister responsible for overseeing our Young Adults as well as the Sunday@5 Congregation.

Anthony and Katie met in a school musical in the mid 1990s. Since then, they have got married, lived in 6 homes, had about 10 jobs between them, 8 cars and now have 4 kids and 2 pets! “Life has been busy”, says Anthony, “and it’s had its fair share of ups and downs. But we are feeling in one of the better seasons at the moment.” Anthony grew up in Doon-

side where he lived till he was married. After school he studied Industrial Chemistry, but decided to hand in the lab coat for a business shirt, and so worked for AGL & Smiths Chips in various head office roles. Katie’s family home is in St Clair where her parents still live. She studied Early Childhood Education at UWS Kingswood and worked in a school until she had her first child. “Leaving teaching came with mixed emotions.” Katie reflects, “it was so exciting to be having a baby, but I had 30 kids I loved a lot and it was sad leaving them”. In 2003, Anthony and Katie changed life direction by going to Bible College with the view of doing ministry in Western Sydney. After college, they worked at Kellyville Anglican Church for four years, and this January made the move to Glenmore Park.

Anthony will have a key role amongst the 120 young adults at the church. He is excited about mixing with the young adults because of the life and energy they have. He is also looking forward to feeding into the big decisions they will face, such as, “what should I do with my life?”, “who should I marry?” and “does Jesus matter?” Katie adds, “It is such a privilege to be able to do a job like this. We really see it as one of the best jobs you could ever have

because we are building relationships that will last forever”.

Anthony and Katie would love to meet you and have you & your family join us during the week or on Sundays, where you, like many others in Glenmore Park, have the opportunity to find real life by reconnecting with God and reconnecting with others.

Well now they can. Elisabeth Lynton former Australian National Ballroom Dancing Champion and Taiwan BMW World Cup winner lives in Glenmore Park and is now teaching locally in Regentville hall.

Have your say on Funding Our Future Penrith City residents are being asked to consider the community benefits of a proposed rate increase.

“There are many very positive benefits of the proposal, Penrith City Council General Manager Alan Stoneham said. “Council attracting jobs and investment to the City has always been a high priority for the community and the proposal to renew the Penrith and St Marys City Centres will go a long way to realising these goals. This goes hand-in-hand with introducing a stronger focus on litter reduction in our City and ensuring that our parks and buildings are representative of our quality of life here in Penrith City.”

For almost 90% of residential ratepayers the proposed total increase, phased in over 4 years, would be no more than $254.00. “If the community supports the proposal and Council decides to apply for a Special Rate Variation, a total of $15.2m would be raised over four years. This would enable us to deliver on a number of projects and priorities, many of which the community has been requesting for some time,” Mr Stoneham said.

Family Focus for swimmers The Daleys are a family of swimmers with both Mum and Dad experienced swimming instructors and their four children all brought up in the water.

Brett and Keryn Daley have been able to achieve their dream by taking over the InSwim Aquatic Centre in Blakie Road, Penrith, now called DIVE IN Swimming Academy.

The pool is heated and open all year round and there has already been some great improvements to the centre. Brett is experienced in water quality from his time as pool supervisor at Penrith Swimming centre and Keryn is very keen that all swimmers enjoy the pool environment.

There are vacancies in the Mums and Bubs and pre school swimming classes and Keryn says “This is a fun way to spend time with your young children from 6 months old as well as teaching them a very important life

skill. Brett is a qualified lifeguard and says ‘Learning to swim is so important but parental supervision is still the best prevention of drowning accidents. Pool safely is a vital issue with so many backyard pools now, especially during the months they are not being used when parents might forget how important water safety is.”

Learn to Swim classes are also available for school age children as well as adults. The pool is available for lap swimming as well as private tuition for adults and children who need that little bit extra guidance.

There are three squad age groups and Brett and Keryn are keen to get more children learning the correct techniques and body positions as well as swimming fast!

Brett is a qualified swimming coach and says “We focus on building a strong foundation of swimming technique and then if our students decide to swim competitively, we help them achieve their goals. International Women’s Day event Tuesday 8th of March International Women’s Day Walking Trivia Brunch and the kick off of our walking group for this year will start at 10:30 and go to 12:30 and involve a walk starting from Floribunda Community Centre, along the way, different trivia questions will be laid for you to answer. The walking track will lead back to the centre, where you will be able to have a bit to eat and drink.

(Hopefully it won’t be too hot) Once we are all fed and watered, we will give you the answers and the highest scorers will receive a little gift.

Everyone will receive a show bag of information and resources and there will be a few extra prizes as well.

Then we will have a discussion around what women can only give women and think about what our concerns are as women in Glenmore Park and have a bit of brunch.

The Heart Foundation Walking group will run every week now. This year, I hope to have times where the walks can be taken out of Glenmore Park and into the Mountains or even

further afield.

So, brush up on your Trivia of Australian women, bring your sneakers and a hat. It will be a fun day, a great opportunity to learn about and meet other local women.

Glenmore Park High School news Congratulations to Ebony Toth, Dux in 2010. Ebony has chosen to enrol in a Bachelor of Arts course at University of Western Sydney and plans to become a History teacher.

Congratulations to all our 2010 HSC students. We are pleased with their efforts and wish them success in their future careers.

The school now has two Deputy Principals. Ms Gorick is responsible for Years 8, 10 and 12, and Mr Harvie who is responsible for Years 7, 9 and 11. Mr Harvie returns to Glenmore Park High School after working at Chifley College Senior Campus for three years.

Our year has been off to a busy start with many new enrolments, a Year 7 camp, school photographs and a swimming carnival. The students have brought a very positive attitude and enthusiasm to their studies in these early weeks. The challenge is to maintain this strong start throughout the remainder of the year.

The new five period day will allow more regular contact with staff and increase the flexibility in our curriculum.

New families can find out what is happening at school through our website or better still come to P&C nights to meet staff and other parents in a friendly and informal gathering.

Glenmore Park Action Group Glenmore Park residents met at Floribunda Community Centre for the first GPAG meeting of 2011 on the 8th February. It was encouraging to see an increase in the attendance.

Ken Innes, Chair of GPAG, welcomed Commander Ben Feszczuk who gave an update on crime statistics in Glenmore Park. Brendan Sheedy, Glenmore Park Town Centre Manager, gave an update on the new development application for the centre lodged before Christmas. It is now time to provide feedback on what is being proposed. The discussion about the road going through the town centre showed that no one wants it there, except it seems PCC staff. GPAG has lobbied Council since 2005 to have the road closed.

Mary Cook, Secretary of GPAG raised the traffic problems on Mulgoa Road. With over 10 sets of lights between Glenmore Parkway and Penrith CBD and add the roadworks and road rage comes to mind. Mary had taken photos that she presented to the meeting when an accident had occurred at the new multi million dol-

lar lights at Jamison Rd intersection after nearly an hour that day to get from Glenmore Parkway exit to Penrith CBD. Mary said “One of the bigger concerns coming back into Glenmore Park is that people are turning right across Mulgoa Rd to enter the new 7-Eleven. There needs to be a barrier preventing this and people should use common sense and use the roundabout to do a u-turn and enter 7-Eleven safely” .

Cr Prue Guillame gave her local council report as she has done each meeting since being elected to Penrith City Council. She is the patron of the Glenmore Park Brumbies and an update on the upgrades to the local playing facilities for both rugby league and soccer was welcome. Cr Guillame spoke of her involvement with GPAG and how proud she has been to have the opportunity to work with local residents. She has stepped down from her role as Vice President of GPAG as she is the Labor candidate for Mulgoa in the coming state election and GPAG is non political.

Cr Guillame said “I am not going to make huge promises to the meeting, I will speak up for the community,

I have shown this through Council and I will continue if elected for the State Member for Mulgoa”.

Lastly the local Glenmore Park Community worker from Nepean Community and Neighborhood Services informed the meeting of the upcoming events and activities.

Karate Champion Coskun Erdogan, aged 11, won the International Sport Karate Association Australasian title in December last year not long after after winning the Australian and NSW open!.

He came first in sumo and koshiki, second in full contact and third in point sparring at the Australasian tournament.

Coskun is a provisional black belt and started training in taekwondo and karate when he was five. He already trains at least twice a week and is working towards competing in taekwondo in the Olympics.

The Mulgoa Electorate Diane Beamer has been the local MP for 12 years for the ALP and is retiring. The seat was held with a margin of 11.1% at the last election.

Flood relief Tshirt ‘Riders through the storm’ Local illustrator Blair Sayer came up with the idea of a T shirt design to help relief effort after the tragic flooding in Australia.

Brazil, and Sri Lanka were also included with an animal from each country represented in the design. The online community-driven design company, Threadless felt the need to do something to help fellow community members and their loved ones that were greatly affected by the devastating floods.

Blair worked with 3 other designers from America, Brazil and Brisbane to collaborate on a flood relief shirt design. The resulting design, Riders Through The Storm, is now available for purchase through Threadless.com, and $9 from the sale of each shirt will go toward flood relief.

Threadless has partnered with The Queensland Charity and Welfare Association (TAQCWA), whose

mission is to actively serve people by acquiring charitable capital, making philanthropic grants and providing services that contribute to the health, welfare and educational needs of the under privileged, and is actively seeking other charities in the affected areas to ensure their donation goes to the areas that need it most.
