Our Pets are Wishing for a Merry Christmas! It’s estimated that 13% of Australians will buy their pets a present at Christmas, so with this in mind, Petbarn Penrith Mulgoa is calling on local residents to also help animals in need by getting behind the Petbarn Foundation’s annual Giving Tree Appeal, which raises much-needed funds for animal shelters across the country. To get involved in the appeal local residents can simply purchase a $3, $5 or $10 Christmas decoration, which comes in two parts - one to hang on the Petbarn Penrith Mulgoa Giving Tree and one to take home for their very own family Christmas tree. All funds raised through the appeal will be donated by the Petbarn Foundation to local animal shelters including the RSPCA, Bendigo Animal Rescue, The Lort Smith Animal Hospital, Peninsula Cat Rescue, The Cat Corner, Cat Haven and The Australian Animal Protection Society. Last year over $209,000 was raised through The Giving Tree Appeal, and this year, the Petbarn Foundation is aiming to exceed this amount. “We know that many pet parents from all over Penrith City will be coming in store to buy presents for their furry or finned friends as part of family Christmas celebrations. While they’re here we’re encouraging them to get behind this fantastic cause,” said Debbie Harrison, Store Manager, Petbarn Penrith Mulgoa. “Buying a Christmas decoration for our Petbarn Penrith Mulgoa Giving Tree is an easy way to help support pets in need. Sadly, we see an increase in pets being housed at shelters after the festive season, so we are hoping to raise as much funds as we can to help support our local shelters looking after these animals,” said Debbie. The Petbarn Foundation Giving Tree fundraising promotion will run until 24 December, with the funds presented to the nominated charities in the New Year. From the Editor As we come to the end of 2013, it is timely to reflect upon all that has happened over the past 12 months. Hasn’t the year just raced by? The first part, a flurry of the usual activity, the constant chasing of tails and getting nowhere, the latter part marred by devastating fires, followed by torrential rains. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the people affected by the bushfires and storms. May the Christmas season bring some hope and joy to your lives. As always, we have some excellent reading to get you right into the Christmas Spirit, not to mention some truly delightful Christmas recipes on page 12. If you’re rushing around for those last minute gifts, don’t despair, the award winning Lollylicious will be at Glenmore Park Town Centre from 9th December until Christmas Eve with their spectacular chocolate display including, Teacher gifts, Christmas trees, bouquets and all sorts of sweet delights. See their ad on page 12. For now, as the most special time of the year for children approaches, I will end by wishing every reader, their families and friends, a happy, peaceful and restful Christmas season and may you all enjoy good health, peace of mind and happiness in 2014. We’ll be back in February to keep you up to date on all the goings-on around your neighbourhood! Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud!

CHRIST CHURCH @ THE COLLEGE

Rev Mark Bonnici • Christ Church @ The College • www.christchurchatthecollege.com.au

The Lost and Found Of Christmas My eldest daughter has always been adventurous but I remember this day when she was three like it was yesterday. I remember being in the back yard and I could hear her and an older cousin playing inside the house. Within a matter of seconds I heard the pattering of feet and soon after I heard the front screen door screech open and slam shut. I called out and heard nothing. I immediately ran through the house, out through to the front yard until I reached the footpath. I looked to my right and watched the pathway make it’s way to the end of the street and saw no one. I did the same to my left and the eerie silence left me overwhelmed with panic. House by house I began knocking on each door asking whether anyone had seen my little girl. You cannot imagine my relief when some twenty houses later I found them playing at another friend’s house. Jesus tells similar stories in the Bible about being lost and found and the more I think about the Christmas message the more I realise it is just about that. Many people don’t realise that they are lost and estranged from God. From the moment we begin to take control of our lives we set ourselves on a course away from God because intrinsically in our DNA we want autonomy to be able to make our own choices in life. The problem is that many of us don’t see that we are made to be in a relationship with God and when we cut that tie, we are lost. It’s a little like my brother when he got lost at Luna Park age 5, and just didn’t know he was lost as he blissfully waited for someone to pick him up. On the other hand my mother definitely knew he was lost. I knew when my daughter was lost, most parents realise the situation far before the child ever

6 December 2013 www.glenmoregazette.com.au

does, that they are lost! Similarly, God is our Heavenly And the reason he sent his son Jesus into the world was because although we weren’t aware of it, God knew we were lost. When the angel spoke to Mary and Joseph it was not to tell them that ‘Hey God’s giving you a gift because he’s a great guy.’ On the contrary, this is what the angel says: ‘For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord’. What the world really needed was a saviour, someone to save us. You see God is our father and he knows we are lost and in this story of lost and found he is the one who takes the initiative, just as my mother and I did when our children were lost. This is because he desperately loves us and has been searching for us through his son. He wants a relationship with us as his sons and daughters but sadly, some of us are so unaware of what the true situation is. The day I lost Elyssa was a frightening day for me yet when I found her, she was merrily playing and completely unaware of what Had just transpired. Christmas reminds us every year that God loves us and that we are lost. If you are unaware of how lost you are then God’s intervention plan in sending Jesus to us demonstrates just how lost we are, because Jesus would sacrifice his very life in the end, to ensure that we could be reconnected to God. Please join us this Christmas and hear the full message of how you can know the joy of having a renewed relationship with your father in heaven. Bless you, Rev Mark Bonnici

COUNSELLING CORNER

PADRE PIO PARISH

Fr Robert Riedling • 34-38 William Howell Dr , Glenmore Park Phone: 4737 9735 • www.padrepioglenmorepark.org.au

An End and a New Beginning Just as I was getting accustomed to writing “2013” on various documents I was startled recently into the reality of recognising I’d soon have to get used to writing “2014” as 2013 is almost at an end! Though time passes at a constant pace, it appears to move more quickly if we are preoccupied with various matters. As we draw towards the end of 2013 it is worthwhile reflecting on what has occupied our time during the past year. For most of us, of course, the vast majority of our time is taken up with quite mundane tasks and pastimes: working, sleeping, eating, drinking, bathing, travelling, dealing with email correspondence, relaxing in front of the television or computer. Very little of our time is taken up with great “highs”. In all of this busyness it is not surprising that many people, even people of faith, find few opportunities to reflect on where God is present in the midst of the “daily grind”. Yet there is never a moment of our life, no matter how ordinary we believe our lives to be, that God is not present and taking a loving interest in who we are. I say “who we are” rather than “what we do” because, in the end, who we are as Christians determines our actions. So as we approach the end of the year let us resolve to make a new beginning. May we take time in 2014 to reflect on the presence of Emanuel, “God-with-us”, who, out of love for us, deigned to take on human form to live amongst us and show us the true face of God: loving, merciful, compassionate and just. God takes the utmost interest in each of us, loving each of us as if we were the only one to love. It all began with what appeared to be something mundane and ordinary: the birth of a baby boy to a humble couple in a stable in the very ordinary town of Bethlehem. A truly happy, holy and joyful Christmas and New Year to you all from me and all the parishioners of Padre Pio Catholic Parish. An invitation is open to all to attend the Padre Pio Christmas Carols Family Night on Saturday 07 December from 7:00pm – 9:00pm at the parish hall at Bethany Catholic School adjacent to the Padre Pio Catholic Church, 34 – 38 William Howell Drive, Glenmore Park. Food and drinks for sale. Carols and Christmas songs and a visit from someone special for the children! Christmas Carols and Mass times are as follows: Tuesday 24 December: Carols from 6:30pm. Mass @ 7:00pm. Tuesday 24 December: Carols from 9:00pm. Mass @ 9:30pm. Tuesday 24 December: Carols from 11:30pm. Mass @ 12:00 Midnight. Wednesday 25 December: Carols from 9:00am. Mass @ 9:30am. For regular Mass times and other information go to: www.padrepioglenmorepark.org.au 34 – 38 William Howell Drive, Glenmore Park. Ph. 4737 9735 Looking forward to welcoming you and your family this Christmas and New Year! Blessings and prayers, Fr Robert Riedling

with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All Phone 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 email lindacassell@bigpond.com The myth of the perfect family is a burden many of us take to the grave, and at no time is it put under more stress than at Christmas. Conflicts and ambiguous feelings we’ve put on hold all year, bubble to the surface. Then there’s the eternal tug over who we’ll spend Christmas with. Your parents or your in-laws? Your divorced father or your mother? What if your kids decide to go to your ex-husband and his new wife, proving once and for all that they’ve abandoned you? Or, and this is true for a growing number of people, what if you have no one you really want to spend Christmas with? And finally, there’s the pressure to try to solve it all with Mastercard or Visa, to prove your love with dollars because you just don’t know how else to navigate the emotional rapids of relationships. Here are four emotional survival tips: 1. Ask yourself who you really want to spend Christmas with. Imagine that the Guilt-Free Fairy could wave her wand and no one would feel hurt or angry at your decision. Where would you feel truly accepted and at ease? Where would you laugh and be playful? 2. In terms of Christmas shopping, ask yourself whether you are buying each gift because the process gives you pleasure or out of obligation, and be realistic about your financial situation. 3. Use your time off to enjoy getting back to nature via a visit to the bush or beach 4. Spirituality is a natural antidepressantso attend a church service and see the church at its most joyful! Now is the Time to Fix

Interest rates are at their lowest level in over 50 years and whilst there are no signs that Variable rates will rise anytime soon, sub 5% Fixed rates are about to disappear and it may be another 50 years before they return. Whilst Variable rates are based on the Reserve Bank’s cash rate, Fixed rates are tied to Bank Bill Swap Rates and the banks base their pricing on what the “yield curves” indicate the future price will be and they’re going up. That means that these record low Fixed rates could be gone by Christmas! These amazing rates are combined with huge competition between the banks to win your business with some offering rebates of up to $1,250 to win your business so there has never been a better time to switch your Home Loan. Let us compare your current loan with some of the best offerings in the market to find you a great deal that will last for years to come.

Regentville Public School recently hosted the first technology showcase of the Glenmore Park Learning Alliance. The local schools involved in the showcase included Glenmore Park Public School, Surveyors Creek Public School, Regentville Public School and Warragamba Public School. The expo brought together members from all four school communities to see how teachers cater for the needs of children in the 21st Century. It focused on reading and how iPads and other technology can be implemented into school to support both teaching and learning. The Learning Alliance was developed in conjunction with Macquarie University and was formed to foster collegiality through the sharing of skills and knowledge amongst staff, students, families and the local communities. Soul Matters

Christmas celebrates the birthday of Jesus Christ. For many people it is not meaningful beyond holidays, family shindigs and presents. Gift-giving can express love, but I personally don’t like Christmas because of the commercialism of it all. As with many blokes, shopping doesn’t do much for me, but that’s not my main issue. It’s more about our over-focus on things and what this does for our families and our souls. Note for example, the stress, financial pressure, and the poor quality of our family time surrounding the frenetic Christmas shopping spree. We scream at the kids more and have less quality time with them, and for what? So that we can show them we love them by giving them more things? We need things, and can enjoy things, but things can’t love us, or save us, or develop our character. For this we need to look more in the direction of shared experiences (facing challenges, achieving something or simply having fun together), relationships, and what happens inside of us. Jesus taught that we live life from the inside-out. In other words, it is feeling loved and finding peace inwardly that makes us truly happy, not our external possessions or achievements. If this is true, over-focussing on buying things at Christmas deserves at the very least to be questioned. We should consider activities that better express love to each other for example, and enriches the inside of us. Christmas means more when we look at the response of people to his birth. The Bible portrays his birth as special

– he was conceived supernaturally and his arrival fulfilled prophecies over 700 years old. Astrologers at the time tracked Jupiter to foretell the birth and death of kings, scanning Aries (the star sign of King Herod). Because the movement of stars is predictable, scientists can look at skies 2000 years ago. Astrological charts for the actual birth date of Jesus shows that Jupiter was in Aries, along with Saturn, the sun, and the moon. As a stunning climax the moon eclipsed and revealed Jupiter as a morning star. The three wise men (astrologers) followed the star to find Jesus because they knew it pointed to the birth of a superKing, a Messiah. That’s why they bowed down to him. Angels appeared to shepherds singing the sorts of things we hear in Christmas carols as we shop: Glory to God in the highest, peace on earth, and joy to the world! Why? According to the Bible Jesus came from God to save the world. He died to pay the penalty for our sins so that through him we could re-establish our relationship with God and our spirit could live forever (after physical death). He brought God’s light into the dark corners of humanity – love, peace, hope, and joy to the human soul. Through him the power of God was released to heal the sick and to restore broken lives. I pray for all our sakes that Christmas is about more than shopping and that you and your family find reason for joy, peace and hope this time around.

Use an electric beater to beat butter, sugar and eggs in a bowl for 3 minutes or until pale and creamy. Stir in the fruit mixture. Sift over the combined flour, ginger, mixed spice and bicarbonate of soda. Stir in pecans. Divide among eight 185ml (3/4 cup) mini loaf pans, or eight 5cm (base measurement), 8cm (top measurement), 5cm-deep square cardboard cake cases. Smooth surfaces. 3. Santa Photos with Your Pets

Fantastic Open Day with Dr Harry! Thank you to everyone who attended the Open Day on Sunday 17th November. The weather was terrible and it rained all day, however we still had many people visit and stand in the queue to meet Dr Harry Cooper. From the comments we are hearing, Dr Harry was worth the wait and the rain!! Our guests had an opportunity to line up to meet Dr Harry Cooper where he gave advice on dogs, cats and other animals whilst having his photo taken and signing autographs. The hospital tours were very popular, and not just because it gave the guests a chance to get dry and stay out of the rain. Eden and Kristie showed many people through the hospital and explained all of the different pieces of equipment that we have. A hospital tour is a great way for you to see what goes on behind our doors. Dr Harry Cooper judged the dog competitions and the winners received a large bag full of goodies kindly donated by Walking With A PawPose, Woof N Whiskers Pet Minding, Fluffy and Knuckles, Dog Tech, Pets Charming, Boehringer, Hills, Bayer, Zoetis, Dermcare and The Rosehip Specialists. Check out our Facebook page for the list of winners. We also hosted an online cat competition, as we all know that cats are more comfortable in their own home. Check out our Facebook page for the list of winners. A special thank you to Denise and Lorraine for handmaking and donating 2 quilts, which were raffled on the day. The raffle proceeds were donated to The Guide Dogs NSW. The sausage sizzle was a great success, as they filled our bellies on a rainy day! All proceeds were donated to The Guide Dogs NSW. We also had the world’s biggest model dog, Gulliver, attend our Open Day. Gulliver is a Guide Dog replica, who weighs 690kg, is 4.3 metres tall on his trailer, which is 2.3m wide, and 5m long. Travis, thanks for bringing Gulliver!! A special thank you to all of our staff and volunteers who helped out on the day. We could not have done it without you all! Thank you for working in the carpark, the jumping castles, and the BBQ. Thank you’s go out to: Pete, Chrissy, Bill, Hayley, Brian, Mark, Melissa, Nick, Andrew, Chris, Darren, Alex, Bob and Camille’s family. Thank goodness for family and friends!! Thank you to all of the tent holders who braved the wet weather and put on a smiling face: The Penrith Anglican College , Woof N Whiskers Pet Minding, David Darcy, Dog Tech, Fluffy and Knuckles, Pets Charming, Walking With a Pawpose, and Orchard Hills Rural Fire Brigade. If you have any suggestions for future events or what we can do to make an Open Day more enjoyable, please let us know. Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

PARENTS’ CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

In the October issue of the Gazette, I gave you some strategies for resolving sibling conflict and rivalry. It was such a big topic that I had to split it into two parts. Here is Part 2 … • Role model for your kids what relationship repair looks like. If you have roused on the kids and you feel like you went too far, lost your cool, got it wrong, or responded from your own stuff rather than being logical and reasonable, you can apologise to your kids for your behaviour. You can talk about what you said or did that was mistaken and what you think you could have done better. This is good modelling. Just never make your kids responsible for YOUR feelings and behaviour (own them), never make your kids responsible for making you feel better, and never ever beg for their forgiveness. • Do the “kid swap” on a regular basis. When your kids have their friends over they are usually at their best behaviour. When you send your kids off to someone else’s house to play, they are usually on their best behaviour. I really like the kid swap, and will have up to 6 boys in my tiny little house on a regular basis. It is wonderful to see how well the children can get along. • As Dr Laura Markham says “love each one the best”. This is different to treating them all the same. As your children get older it becomes too hard to treat them all the same. One will have a birthday party invite and the others will not. That’s life – there is very little equity or sameness. However, be careful that you speak positively about each of your children and give each of them your love, care and attention. A work colleague of mine years ago told me that growing up she thought she was Mum’s “special one”. She was one of eight children. One day at lunch, sitting around the table with her adult siblings, they each said they thought they were the special one, the one that Mum loved the best. I can almost guarantee that Mum did not spend hours with each of her eight children each day. She demonstrated her love and care to each child in the quality of the small interactions throughout the day, each and every day. • Have house rules - not because the kids are going to follow them 100% of the time, but because rules communicate your expectations for their behaviour. State them in a positive way, so that the kids know what to do rather than what not to do. So, instead of saying “no hitting: say “we keep our hands and feet to ourselves”. Have a family meeting once per week, and allow the children to have their own say about what is working for them and what is not. • When children are fighting over the computer, TV, X-box, etc, the logical consequence is to switch it off for five minutes. When they come back to the activity at the end of the five minutes, remind them that if they fight over it again, it will go away for 10 minutes. Increase the time by five minutes each time. Make sure you apply the logical consequence immediately and consistently. Follow through with what you say you will do. Switching it off for short periods gives your kids the chance to get it right. When you’ve got to the stage where you have switched the machine off for a half hour, let the kids know that it has gone away for the day and they can try again tomorrow. • Kids fighting in the car? Pull over and have a five minute Quiet Time. It’s too dangerous to drive whilst the kids are carrying on in the back. • You can use reflective listening to sort out a stoush between siblings by reflecting what they are saying and how they are feeling. Don’t storm in and ask the two most stupid questions that parents ask – “Who started it?” and “What happened?” You’ll never get a straight answer, you will be forced to take sides, and you may get it wrong, setting the scene for further resentment and conflict . Dr Laura Markham demonstrates a great way to resolve children’s disagreements at http://www.ahaparenting.com/parenting-tools/ family-life/siblings_fight That’s it for this month. Wishing you peaceful sibling interactions this holiday season.

Farewell Kevin Lee The people of Glenmore Park and the greater Australian community were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Kevin Lee, the former Priest of Padre Pio Parish in Glenmore Park and previous Glenmore Gazette columnist. Mr Lee was the first confirmed Australian death in Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and is survived by his wife Josefina and daughter Michelle. Since leaving the Parish, Mr Lee had been on an extended stay in the Philippines and welcomed the birth of his daughter Michelle Lucila just six weeks before his death. Kevin Lee began his career as a Police Chaplain with the New South Wales Police Force. In 2004, the Most Rev Kevin Manning DD, the second Bishop of Parramatta, appointed Rev Kevin Lee as the Administrator of the Glenmore Park area. In 2005, Bishop Manning appointed Rev Lee as Parish Priest for the then soon to be built Padre Pio Parish. Father Lee oversaw the opening of the Parish in 2009, before leaving in 2012. In recent times, Mr Lee explored a career in politics and sought Liberal pre-selection for the seat of McMahon and was defeated by Ray King. A memorial mass was held on Monday 18th November for Mr Lee at St Thomas Aquinas Parish in Springwood.

to 4 states with a very high standard amongst the students practicing the art. The Nepean Wolves team exhibited great enthusiasm and spirit at the Nationals. Every year, for the past 5 years, the Wolves club wins the trophy for the “Best Spirited” and “Best Performing” Club, and this year was no exception. The events at the Nationals included; • Patterns, like kata, a series of moves increasing in complexity as the student moves up through the grades. • Contact sparring. This is done with foam swords and the students wear a lot of padding to avoid any injuries. This is a great way to encourage students to remember to block the incoming attack before launching an attack of their own! • Paper cutting. This sounds easy, but cutting a hanging piece of paper with a wooden sword takes the correct technique. The lines to be cut on the paper are marked, and points are given for accuracy and the straightness of the cut. • Bamboo cutting is done by the black belt grades. It means performing a series of diagonal cuts through the bamboo, with a very sharp sword, in a downward and upward direction. A spectacular event to watch! The Nepean Wolves Club has been running Taekwondo classes in the Nepean area for 12 years, and began Haidong Gumdo classes nearly 5 years ago. Interested? Call Luke Adlam – 0408 609 464.

KEEPING FIT WITH Rj Staying in Shape Over the Silly Season

The weeks leading up to the Christmas break always pose the biggest threat to your waist line and fitness levels. Family catch ups, drinks with friends and endless Christmas parties, all add up to excess calories being consumed and not enough calories being burned. Here are my top 5 tips to staying in shape over the silly season! 1. Eat something light before parties to reduce your chances of binging on high calorie party food. 2. Remain hydrated throughout the day and ensure you drink water between alcoholic drinks. You’ll feel much better the next day, and be more motivated to exercise. 3. Try getting up earlier and getting your exercise session out of the way. Then you won’t be tempted to skip it altogether. 4. Aim to maintain your current weight, rather than losing over this period. 5. Fill up your plate with good, nutritious foods such as fruits and vegetables first, to avoid the temptation of over eating. Happy Training! When to Put Up the Tree Traditionally, Christmas trees were not brought in and decorated until Christmas Eve or, in the traditions celebrating Christmas Eve rather than on the first of day of Christmas, 23 December, and then removed the day after Twelfth Night (5 January); to have a tree up before or after these dates was even considered bad luck. In many areas, it has become customary to set up one’s Christmas tree at the beginning of the Advent season. In Australia, the Christmas tree is usually put up on 1st December, except for South Australia, where most people put up their tree after the Adelaide Christmas Pageant in late November. Some traditions suggest that Christmas trees may be kept up until no later than 2 February, the feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple (Candlemas), when the Christmas season effectively closes.

EXTRA BIN COLLECTIONS THIS CHRISTMAS •

From Monday 23 December 2013 to Friday 17 January 2014, extra bin collections will be provided to all households.

Unit complexes with a collect and return service will also receive extra collections from their bin bay during this period.

Put all your bins on the kerbside the night before your normal collection day.

More bin collections take more time and may run into the night. Leave your bin out until it has been emptied so you don’t miss out.

If you don’t know your collection area, check your waste service calendar, go to penrithcity.nsw.gov.au or call 4732 7615.
