Little Wings First Flight For Nepean Hospital
Issue 117
Last month, local charity, Little Wings completed its first flight service for Nepean Hospital to get a family back home to Brisbane. The McGonigle family were down from Brisbane for holidays when 12yo Kieran became unwell. After initially seeking treatment for stomach pains, Kieran became very unwell and was taken to Nepean Hospital with a severe perforated appendicitis. Following his operation he was required to remain in hospital for another 5 days which meant the family could no longer use their return flight tickets home. Little Wings has been in discussion with Shannan Waddups who is the Nurse Unit Manager – Paediatrics at Nepean about providing support for children attending the hospital. Australia Day Awards recognise Penrith’s best The bushfires that devastated the Blue Mountains in October showed Penrith’s Citizen of the Year Peter Camilleri at his best. Mr Camilleri turned his business, Penrith Storage King, into a collection point for donated goods to help those who had lost their homes. The business also operated as a drop-off point for water and supplies for the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and State Emergency Service (SES). Mr Camilleri is one of seven City residents who were awarded Australia Day honours at a formal dinner held at the Civic Centre on Thursday, 23 January. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said Mr Camilleri remained on call after hours throughout the fires to assist those who needed help. “It is this generosity of spirit that has led to Mr Camilleri being awarded Penrith’s Citizen of the Year,” Cr Fowler said. “Mr Camilleri continued to run his own business during this period, while addressing the needs of those affected by fire. “He even donated storage space to fire victims, so they could keep their sentimental items safe. It was an incredibly generous effort overall.” Bede Johnston was awarded Penrith’s Sports Person of the Year. Mr Johnston competed in the Ironman Australia Triathlon in Port Macquarie in May 2013 in memory of his sister Kate who lost her battle with Juvenile Xanthogranulomas, an extremely rare blood disorder, in 2012. He raised over $5000 for the Leukaemia Foundation which supports those who have the blood disorder, as well as their loved ones, and qualified for the World Championships that were held in Hawaii last October. Local Appreciation Awards were also awarded at the Civic Centre ceremony to Robert and Joyce Moynahan, Phil Lacey, Elizabeth Reibelt and Gina Field. Cr Fowler said award winners were nominated as outstanding citizens by friends, family and peers. “Mr and Mrs Moynahan are a volunteering dream team and have worked tirelessly for many organisations over many years,” he said. “Mr Lacey is being awarded for his dedication to the community, particularly Rotary. Miss Reibelt has been a volunteer leader in the Scout movement for more than 30 years.” “Mrs Gina Field has been awarded for her demonstrated excellence in business and voluntary roles. “All recipients richly deserve recognition for their work in our community and I thank and congratulate them.”

What Jesus Started Jesus is an extraordinary person of history. You might not realise but so much of what Jesus said and taught has now become a normal and accepted way of thinking and living in our world today. Jesus revolutionised our world. Jesus started something, that today, so many of us simply take for granted. Prior to the coming of Jesus, human life was cheap. Compassion was a virtually unknown quality, but Jesus taught that all people have value and that all of life is to be cherished. For example, the saying, “Do to others as you would have them do to you” is the words of Jesus from the Bible’s New Testament book of Luke. Likewise, in Jesus’ day, children were of no significance but again Jesus taught and demonstrated that children are valuable and precious. Jesus cared for the aged and for women. He was passionate about justice and concerned for the poor and the less privileged. But it is even bigger than this. Jesus taught that there is more to life, that there is more to life than what we see around us. Jesus taught his followers to value the things that will take us into eternity, rather than to hold onto the things that are here today and gone tomorrow. As we look back at history and consider the last 2000 years we see that what Jesus started has transformed the lives of millions of people. And here’s the thing, Jesus today, continues to transform the lives of people. Jesus started something that continues to give people’s lives meaning and purpose and direction. Jesus started something that gives lasting peace and joy and satisfaction to life. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church we would love to share with you this wonderful transforming good news of Jesus! We’d love to see you at one of our Sunday Church Services and at some of our special activities throughout the week, such as our “Real Life Parenting Course” (see the advertisement to the right) and our “Christianity Explained Course” in February and March. There really is something for everybody! Want to find out more? Give me a call on 4733 1635. Rev John Lavender

Following the release last month of 22 prestige home sites at Mulgoa Rise which saw 19 blocks selling in the first weekend, a further 24 were released in Stage 5A the following weekend to meet demand. Over 250 home sites have now sold in Mulgoa Rise, an exciting new residential estate in Western Sydney, with strong enquiry and demand continuing from homebuyers looking for a quality block on which to build their dream home. Mulgoa Rise will comprise more than 600 homes when complete. Resolutions! At this time of the year some of us have already made New Year’s resolutions and blown them. In one moment we have been overwhelmed by temptation or desire and given in to that which we vowed we would conquer! Some of us have spent squillions on setting ourselves up to tackle a new sports regime and given in within a month. Some of us just couldn’t leave our first and only savings for the year tucked away in our account. We’ve been overwhelmed by all the January sales and given in before we even started! In a very interesting article, a Psychologist named Morty Leftco recognises that in the long run people cannot be motivated by others or even by themselves to do anything using the promise of a reward or threat of punishment to change any behaviour. If you want to do something and the new behaviour is consistent with your core beliefs, no motivation is necessary, you will do it naturally. So if your new desired behaviour is inconsistent with your core beliefs, belief trumps motivation every time in the long run and you will fail to achieve the desired behaviour. He will go on to speak about self-perceptions, the people around us and the world we live in and how our core beliefs about these three areas will have consequences for how we live and behave. Many of us have core beliefs which are simply not true, about ourselves, others and the world we live in. We continue to see ourselves as worthless or failures because we haven’t match to others’ achievements. We see the people around us as opponents or even enemies and we see the world as a depressing and difficult place to live in. God’s perceptions of us are very different and at the deepest level challenge our self-perceptions when we choose to follow him and his son Jesus: 1. We are children of God, greatly loved 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, The issue of belonging is such a powerful one. As soon as you begin engaging with others you experience the desire to be connected to another individual, a group or a cause. Many young parents struggle with the angst that comes with this, hoping, praying that their child will make friends at school. They connect in with as many groups as possible to ensure that their son or daughter belongs to something
and find engagement with others. The reason for this primarily is so the child gains a deeper sense of their own self worth and value. Parents are telling their children in no uncertain terms that if they connect with others they are valued by them and by society and therefore they are a more valuable person. Although there is some truth to this claim, you see the problem, value must come from the original qualities and gifts each person has intrinsically and not whether these qualities are accepted by others. The problem with much of this is that in seeking acceptance from others we often forfeit the reality that we were made intrinsically to know God first and knowing God is what gives us a deep sense of our value and our sense of being. This is because He loves us unconditionally, in other words, warts and all! Our sense of value is tied deeply to the knowledge that God really loves us. He demonstrated this love through the wilful sacrifice of Jesus to die in our place so that we might live: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16 Our sense of being is founded in our knowledge of God also because God placed eternity in our hearts within the boundaries of life, so that we would search for him and find him and through this relationship find ourselves in Him: 26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. So many of us continue to search for meaning in a world which cannot fill our deepest needs for belonging and being. We are like birds living in a cage, blessed with a full cup of food inside our cage but so used to the way we live we cannot notice the great big world outside and the cage door wide open. We look to the mechanisms of this world to give us self worth and identity, yet have lost connection with the eternal one who gave us life in the first place and with that belonging and value. Maybe it’s time this year for a new resolution, it’s not too late. These anonymous words come to mind: No God, No Life… Know God, Know Life. May your resolutions for 2014 be saturated with the deep sense that you are truly loved and accepted, and that you are being what you were made to be. Know God even more deeply, that you may know life. God bless, Rev Mark Bonnici

Australia Day 2014 WE CELEBRATED Australia Day just a week or so ago and for Christians it was significant that Australia Day fell on a Sunday this year. The Catholic Church uses special readings and prayers for Australia Day each year to assist us in gaining a Godly focus on what it means to be Australian, over and above the usual secular focus that dominates the media at this time, some of which surely makes us cringe! If we were to flick through the Bible for some clue as to what it means to be a patriotic Australian we would not get very far. A better approach is to examine the scripture readings that the Church has chosen especially for Australia Day. This gives us a good idea about the Church’s thinking on how we should view our national identity from a Christian perspective. It is clear that the clichés and platitudes that make up so much of our Australia Day experience are not emphasised in the Church’s understanding of what it means to be a Godly Australian. The First Reading from the prophet Isaiah (32:15-18) speaks of a land where justice, peace and integrity will dwell, surely something for which we should continue to strive. Though we are a wealthy democratic country untouched by serious internal political strife or war, with what most would regard as strong welfare, education and health systems and a fair justice system, these are not circumstances or institutions we ought to take for granted. Rather, we ought to constantly monitor these systems for improvements and ensure they are not eroded in the name of fiscal prudence. And how do we do this? Our Second Reading (1 Corinthians 12:4-11) points the way in telling us that “the particular way in which the Spirit is given to each person is for a good purpose.” We are urged to work together with our gifts and talents to bring God’s kingdom into being, right here where we live: in our homes, our workplaces, our nation. Our Gospel on Australia Day reinforces this in the words of Jesus in the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-12), our blueprint for Christian living. We are told we’ll find true happiness and fulfilment when we humbly pursue gentleness, justice, mercy and peace. Let us give thanks that we live in this wonderful nation, whether we were born here or, like so many, came from overseas to live in this nation of opportunity and promise. But let us always reflect on how we as a nation can be a beacon of peace, mercy and justice to the world, in addition to being famous as a nation for our sporting prowess and natural beauty, good as these things are. Our parish is a vibrant and active Christian community. If you would like to join us, particularly those who may not attend our Masses regularly or new residents in the area, we would love to welcome you here as part of our friendly, inclusive and family-oriented community. Our Mass times are as follows: Saturday: 5:30pm Vigil Mass with choir. Sunday: 7:30am Mass and 9:30am Mass with choir and children’s liturgy. Looking forward to welcoming you! Soul Matters
Even if we don’t like admitting it, we all want to be loved and valued. That’s often why we work so hard, exercise so much, and strive to meet the expectations of others. We try to be as “good” as we can to make ourselves worthy of acceptance, love, and respect. Our society tells us, for example, that owning certain things, establishing a career, and having big muscles or being thin makes us “good” or worthy of adulation. To show how fickle this all is, earlier in human history (before the over-sexualising of things) it was “good” to have fat on your bones – a sign of prosperity and membership in the higher classes which had more food to eat! The media promotes standards for what makes us acceptable that fuel an unending “worthiness game” as the gaol-posts continually shift. Even much religion today peddles the idea that we need to remove what is not good in us to be worthy of God’s love. But we are who we are, and we can’t deny the good and not-sogood of our basic personality. Of course what is not good in us – pride, envy, un-forgiveness, greed, lust and so on – will blind us and hinder our well-being. For this reason God calls us to address such things, but worthiness is a different issue. The Bible brings good news: that our worthiness is a gift from God. He has full knowledge of the behind the scenes good and not-so-good in us, and chooses to see us as worthy of his love anyway! This is what makes us fall in love with God. Worthiness is intrinsic to the human soul by God’s choice of love, so we don’t need to make ourselves worthy of love by being or doing good (and can’t anyway). We must simply recognise the truth about ourselves and accept God’s grace. It is grace that energises us to want to change what hinders us. Humans face a dilemma that makes it difficult to find rest in our soul: we have a deep need for acceptance and love but can’t be “good” enough (morally or in terms of what society demands) to be worthy of it. For true inner peace we must resolve the dilemma by discovering God’s love.

The Debt Consolidation Trap After the Christmas & New Year’s Eve parties are over, we’re often left with a bit of a “Financial” hangover in the form of drained bank accounts and maxed out credit cards. As a cure, many people look to consolidate their debts into their Home Loan but unless you’re careful, the cure can be worse than the disease. Debt Consolidation isn’t always a bad thing, in fact it can be very useful if your cash flow is tight. However, many people fall into the trap off using debt consolidation to clear their credit cards only to max them out again. It is a downward spiral that means that many of today’s generation of Mortgage Holders will never own their homes. Instead of Debt Consolidation, look at Debt Elimination strategies which will leave you far better off in the long run. If Debt Consolidation is absolutely necessary, then consolidate your debts into a personal loan with a 5 year term rather than paying for Christmas for the next 30 years. And don’t forget to cut up those Credit Cards! For expert advice on Debt Consolidation versus Debt Elimination call us on 4733 8592.

Little Wings First Flight From Nepean Hospital Westmead Hospital, we wanted to provide local community support services where possible, and this was our first opportunity to do so. Kieran and his sisters Rhianna, Akiesha and their Nana were picked up in our Little Wings transporter, donated by Hyundai Australia, and taken to the airport for their flight home. Nepean Hospital often has families on Holidays where a child is injured, or becomes ill such as Kieran did, and its exciting to be able to provide a support service to help these families at a difficult time. Little Wings is able to pick up from the hospital and look after everything to get the family back home quickly & safely at no cost. HEALTH MATTERS Article by: Rhonda Rolfe - Harmonising Health Ph: 0430 047 421 E: rhonda@harmonisinghealth.com.au W: www.harmonisinghealth.com.au
Stress – What is it? Stress typically describes a negative condition that can have an impact on ones mental and physical well-being. According to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, Stanford University Medical School and numerous health experts, the number one killer on the planet is STRESS! Up to 95% of all physical and nonphysical health problems have stress as their origin. Every time we have a health problem we should be asking, "What stress is causing this, and how can I eliminate it?" Stress is known as the silent killer. It leads to a multitude of health problems including high blood pressure, depression, anxiety disorders, mental illness, heart attack and stroke, etc. So you don’t think you’re stressed? Believe it or not, you can be suffering from stress without realising it. In this fast paced world we all have learned to battle on regardless. We don’t feel stressed because how we feel has become “normal” to us, but it is far from healthy. What Are The Effects of Stress? Stress can affect not only the physical body, but also the mind, emotions and behaviour. It can show up as headaches, aches and pains, fatigue, eczema, weakened immune system, asthma, bed wetting, stomach ulcers, forgetfulness, impaired judgement, nightmares, negativity, loss of interest, irritability, low self esteem, conflict in relationships, loss of appetite, overeating – and the list goes on. Stress Knows No Age Barriers Stress can and does affect people of all ages from babies through to the very elderly. If you, or someone you care for, are showing signs of stress, don’t wait until it’s too late. A simple technique called Emotional Freedom Technique, or tapping therapy is gaining momentum world wide for its effectiveness in reducing stress levels. Keeping You Well

Top Results, Top Students! The St Paul’s Grammar School, Penrith, class of 2013 International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma students received their results last month, highlighting the long history of high academic achievement at St Paul’s. Principal Paul Kidson congratulated students, families and staff, noting that these outstanding results come from their collective efforts. Results released showed that International student, Sereibanndith Seang of Phnom Penh, Cambodia, was the Dux of St Paul’s from the class of 2013 with an IB score of 43 out of a maximum possible 45, equating to an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR) of 99.60. A total of seventeen students achieved IB scores of 37 or above, equating to ATARs above 95. The number of students in the cohort this year was 63. IB Diploma results are not included in school rankings based on HSC scores and as such do not report that St Paul’s Grammar School is one of the best schools in NSW in terms of academic results, in that two thirds of our Year 12 graduates this year were IB Diploma Candidates. Other top scoring IB Diploma students included Nicholas Coulshed of Mount Riverview, Lachlan Johns of Blaxland and Veronica Mitchell of Orchard Hills, all with IB 42 (ATAR 99.25); School Captain Susannah Hoffmann of Bligh Park and Sarah Smith-Wade of Springwood both with IB 41 (ATAR 98.70) and Ryan Lin of South Penrith with IB 40 (ATAR 98.05). St Paul’s students have a long tradition of exceptional IB results with many scores in the 40’s (ATAR above 99) in the past seven years. St Paul’s long-term average is an ATAR of 92 from over 600 IB Diploma graduates. The world average has an ATAR equivalent of 80. Veronica Mitchell of Orchard Hills (IB 42: ATAR 99.25) is hoping for placement in Communications / Law at the University of Technology, focusing on the study of Internationalism and languages (French): “Being a Captain of Cornwallis House, involved in the service learning projects of the School, from the Congo, Arnhem Land to Cambodia, I really want to contribute to global social justice initiatives.” St Paul’s offers a continuum of IB education from Pre-K-12, the only school to do so in NSW. It was one of the first schools to offer the IB in Australia, beginning with the Diploma Programme in 1990. It was the first school to offer the IB Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes, being authorized by the IB Organization to offer both in 2003, becoming the third school in Australia to offer all three IB Programmes. St Paul’s remains the only school in NSW to offer all three IB Programmes. Each year half to two thirds of the St Paul’s Year 11 and 12 students have studied the IB Diploma Programme.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
Have you, as a parent, decided that you need to look after yourself a bit more this year? ‘Looking after yourself’ is one of the five keys to positive parenting in the Triple P programme. You’ve got to live it to give it. What small thing can you do today to take care of yourself? Every day, do one small thing that you enjoy and that satisfies your hands, warms your heart, or feeds your mind. How we feel about ourselves affects how we parent. Some parents have said to me that they only care about what happens for their kids and they no longer care about themselves. They have said “my life is over now, it’s all about the kids”. I urge all parents to take care of themselves, because that is all about the kids too. Your children have mirror neurons in their brains. Mirror neurons help us to detect emotion in other people. If you think you can hide your sadness, depression, anger, annoyance, or frustration from your children, think again. Your children are like a radar for how you are feeling. Why? Because their emotional and physical safety depend on it. But not only that, if your child is picking up that you are sad or angry, they blame themselves. Deep down inside, they think they are the cause of your anger or upset, no matter how many times you tell them that they are not. And that’s not good for their emotional and mental health. When I was teaching a social and emotional programme in a disadvantaged school, and I asked the students from preschool to Year 6 to name some emotions, they all said (even the littlies) “happy, sad, depressed, and angry”. They could only name those four emotions, because that’s all they heard their parent/carer saying and what they saw them feeling. Diet and exercise are important to you too. Choose the salad sandwich over the chips. If you are not that keen on gyms or jogging, incidental exercise is good too, such as walking to school to pick up the children, or doing squats and stretches whilst hanging the washing on the line. When do you take the time to focus on your adult relationships? Many parents tell me they feel isolated and judged in their role as parents. Who supports you whilst you have the important job of supporting your children? Where can you get support from caring and interested people? If you are feeling overwhelmed, depressed, anxious, or having persistent difficulties in your relationships, seek professional help and counselling. You owe it to yourself and your children to be as well as you can be (intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially).

When something goes wrong, one of the first responses many people have is to blame someone. If you can blame someone else, you can avoid the fear of not being good enough Maybe you panic when you may have done something wrong because in the past others have rejected you or perhaps punished you for making a mistake. Blaming is the way you attempt to protect yourself. Whatever the reason, blame usually leads to conflict and damaged relationships in addition to blocking problem solving. You call each other names and yell about how flawed the other person is; using words like lazy, selfish, thoughtless, and stupid, plus a few that are unmentionable. Letting go of blaming behaviour can be difficult. Here are some ideas to consider. 1. Ask yourself if it really matters who was at fault. 2. Focus on what you can do, not what someone else should have done or could do Put your energy into getting past the difficult situation, not on who caused it. 3. Stay in the present. Bringing up past examples of someone else’s behaviour to justify your anger is not helpful in resolving the situation and only makes the situation more upsetting and volatile. 4. Stick to the facts. Just describe the situation without judging. “The car is out of petrol and I am going to be late for work.” Remember to not blame yourself either. 5. Express your feelings without directing them at someone else. Say, “I’m feeling angry and hurt,” rather than “You hurt me,” or “I’m afraid I’ll lose my job,” not “Your stupidity will get me fired.” 6. Use language of acceptance. Your basic view is that you and

others are doing the best possible and that you are all human beings who make mistakes. 7. Look for what others are doing right. Search for the positive actions that others take. Train yourself to notice the positive. 8. Practice compassion. Replace your anger with understanding. Search for a way to understand others’ behaviour.
Vintage 1950’s and 60’s Festival The Penrith CBD Festival will take place on Saturday 22nd March, from 9am to 3pm and will be rockin’ all things vintage! Proudly sponsored by Vintage FM, Western Weekender and @ Print, there will be free entertainment throughout the day, set over 2 stages. Entertainment will include Smurfs 2 and cover bands playing the music of John Farnham, Tom Jones and Neil Diamond. Local dance school PAWS and Tamara Miles Singing School will have some great ideas in the Vintage theme this year for all to see. We are looking for more local schools to be involved in this fantastic day. On the day, there will also be Amazing Disco stilt walkers, face painters, an animal farm, FREE craft area and so much more. The kids will be smiling from ear to ear! The festival will play host to lots of local stalls, fun rides, vintage cars for the car lovers and of course a street parade at 12:30pm. “We are still seeking minor sponsors for the event. The more local support we receive, the more we can add to the festival for Penrith” said Gai Hawthorn of Penrith CBD Corporation. Please give us a call on 4722 5556 to discuss how we can help you promote your business this year as we anticipate over 20,000 people attending throughout the day.

PAWS A WHILE
With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027
New Veterinarian and 2 New Veterinary Donation to The Guide Dogs for Nurses!! Santa Photos With Your Pets We have continued to grow over the last 4 years since I bought Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital and we have hired a third veterinarian and 2 new nurses. How exciting! Theresa is our third veterinarian and she started here in November 2013. Theresa grew up locally with a well recognised appreciation for all animals. After beginning her animal studies with a degree and a masters in wildlife ecology from The University of Sydney, Theresa pursued her veterinary interests by moving to Perth and completing her veterinary degree at Murdoch University in 2012. Theresa is enjoying settling back into her life on the east coast with her Doberman, Bella, and her well travelled cat, Pax (who made frequent journeys between Sydney and Perth!). She also enjoys keeping her horses, chooks and reptiles. Sheridan is one of the new veterinary nurses. Sheridan completed certificate IV in veterinary nursing in 2009. Sheridan started her veterinary nursing career in 2007 at Pittwater on the Northern Beaches. She had a very enjoyable and fulfilling 6 years there before moving to the Hawkesbury and starting at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. In her spare time she loves to get out camping, four wheel driving and abseiling. Sheridan’s love for animals began at a very early age and since then she has had many birds (budgies, cockatiels, ring neck and eclectus parrot), mice and fish. Sheridan finds veterinary nursing to be a very rewarding career especially when giving advice to clients to help them provide better care for their pets. Rachel is one of the new veterinary nurses. Rachel graduated as a Veterinary Nurse in December 2012 at Richmond TAFE and she hasn’t looked back since. She enjoys every aspect of being a Veterinary nurse, especially seeing our loved ones recover to their usual happy selves. She has always loved animals and knew she wanted to work in a job that involved helping them. She enjoys spending time with friends and family when not working, and enjoys rock climbing. She has 2 beautiful much loved Labradors, 2 domestic cats & a ragdoll that get up to mischief together.
Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2013 to take photos with your pets. From all of your donations for the Santa photos, we raised $1200 which was all donated to the Guide Dogs NSW!! We all love giggling and laughing to get your pets attention whilst on Santa’s knee for the photos. We had lots of fun and the Guide Dogs get a great donation. Thanks again for participating. Check out Bella, Pony and Callie for their Santa Photo
We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information check out . our Facebook, website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027.
