From the Editor Welcome to our July issue of the Glenmore Gazette, it’s our 100th issue which is such a fabulous milestone! To think how we have watched the community grow over this time! Not only is it our 100th issue, but also the very first issue with a few minor tweaks, such as our all new Sports section (Pg 14), What’s Cooking (Pg 13), Parent’s Corner (Pg 11), Inside and Out (Pg 9) and a new Editor - that’s me! After 15 years, Margaret Stepniewski has now retired, and having worked with Margaret for the last few years, I thought it was the perfect opportunity for me to continue being involved with the Gazette and our wonderful community. I will be keeping the format much the same. This edition, and all past editions, are available on our website, and for the internet savvy, be sure to LIKE our facebook page for our regular updates. I look forward to keeping you up to date with all the exciting events that take place in and around our community. I welcome your local stories and input, remember, this is your community news and I look forward to being a part of it. By the time this issue makes it into your letterbox, school will have resumed and Term 3 will be well under way. We will all be back to our normal work / day time routines with lots to do and very little time to do it. Winter will be almost half way through and our heaters and log fires will be going strong! Enjoy reading your monthly dose of your community news, and remember, always view the glass half full!

RADICAL DIFFERENCE

Remember the joy of making a discovery that has changed the way you think about life? It could’ve been something very simple such as finding a new holiday location. On the other hand, it could’ve been something big like discovering a new medication to help you deal with sickness. You know the radical difference that these discoveries can make! Sadly, some people think, either through a bad experience or because of the impact of stereotypes shown on TV that the whole “God, Jesus, Bible, Church” thing is neither relevant nor important to their life. Sadly, some people think that Jesus or the Bible or Church simply has nothing to say to their life. What a huge surprise it is when people discover that this is simply not true! What great joy it is for people when they discover that in fact Jesus has so many things to say to their life that he makes a huge and radical difference and for the better! At Glenmore Park Anglican Church it has been wonderful to meet people who have had this experience in their life; people for whom discovering the radical difference that Jesus makes has brought them great joy and contentment and given them greater meaning and direction in their life. On Sundays starting in July and running right through August we will be having a series of talks looking at how knowing Jesus transforms all of life; from dealing with conflict and hardship to strengthening relationships with family and neighbours, these will be talks that will excite and encourage you to see this radical difference of the transforming power of knowing Jesus. We’d love to see you on Sundays at 8.30am, 10.15am 5pm or 7pm so you too can experience this radical difference! These series of steps in the planning and implementation process are important to the overall success of the development and final outcomes for the asset.”

Celebrating 100 Issues 99 issues have been published since the Glenmore Gazette was started in July 2003 and so many changes have taken place since then. Making a Difference Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP, visited the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (RIDBC) Nepean Preschool (Glenmore Park) to meet children who will benefit from a $7200 grant for building improvements. RIDBC Nepean Preschool is a reverse integration preschool which is purpose built to cater for the needs of a child with vision or hearing loss. Children from the community also attend and are able to act as language and learning. “The project will fund the erection of a retractable shade awning adjoining a room which is used for teaching and therapy. This will allow staff to incorporate vital outdoor gross motor and language development opportunities,” said RIDBC Chief Executive, Chris Rehn. “As a charity, RIDBC relies significantly on community support to continue to make a difference in the lives of children who are deaf or blind. We are grateful for this grant.” Ms Davies said “It is a wonderful privilege for me to support the positive work of the RIDBC,” she said. “The grant funding will assist the staff to provide a more en-

hanced learning experience for the children.” RIDBC provides much-needed support services and education Australia-wide to children and families. The Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children - Nepean is located at 5-6 Floribunda Avenue, Glenmore Park. Phone: 4733 4239

Padre Pio Parish Welcomes New Priest

We are very pleased to hear of the recent appointment of Fr Robert Riedling to the Padre Pio Parish. Fr Robert Riedling replaces Fr Kevin Lee as the newly appointed Priest for the Parish. We extend our warmest welcome. “Having been appointed to Padre Pio Parish for about a month now, one of the many things that has impressed me the most about the people here is their great warmth and hospitality. There is a great community spirit here in the parish and I have been humbled and pleasantly surprised by the reception I have received here after Fr Kevin’s departure. Just today I have received two invitations to parishioners’ homes to share a meal which is indicative of the willingness of the parishioners

at Padre Pio to “welcome the stranger in their midst” which I understand is not always easy. It is impossible not to feel and celebrate the great energy here at Padre Pio, an undoubted reflection of the youthfulness of the parish and of Glenmore Park as a whole. This energy, I am pleased to notice, is directed to a large extent towards outreach to others, particularly the less privileged in our parish and in the Philippines. Jesus tells us that care of the less fortunate is an indication of the strength of our faith – on the evidence, the faith of the parishioners at Padre Pio is certainly on firm ground indeed! I look forward to continuing to get to know the parish in the coming months. Learning about the people, the various groups, resources, schedules and routines of any new place takes time and a parish is no different. Fortunately, the parishioners here are only too willing to assist me in that endeavour for which I am very grateful. As we get to know one another better and foster a trusting and loving relationship, we will be well placed to continue our mission as brothers and sisters in Christ to build God’s kingdom right here in Glenmore Park.“ Fr Robert Riedling Parish Priest

Councillor marries Congratulations are in order for Councillor Prue Guillaume who recently wed John Car, a graphic designer from Glenmore Park. The wedding was held on 10th June at Watsons Bay with a week long honeymoon in Tasmania. Councillor Prue Guillaume will now be known as Councillor Prue Car.

$250,000 grant for Mulgoa Valley Landcare Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP presented a cheque to Mulgoa Valley Landcare Group co-ordinator Lisa Harrold in recognition of a $250,000 grant for a Mulgoa Creek Resilience and Restoration Strategy 2012-2018 The project is a 6 year plan to remove invasive weeds at priority sites along the creek and restore the native vegetation. The Mulgoa Valley Landcare Group has been working along the creek for 16 years once a month with volunteers and additional help from landowners and occasional groups. It has made a huge difference to a large section of the creek but there are still many miles of dense non-native trees and weeds to tackle which are beyond the resources of the group. Ms Davies said “The project will provide a land owner support officer to deliver on-site conservation land management training and assistance to landowners within the Mulgoa Valley.” Professional bushcare regenerators will be contracted and all the work monitored and recorded. The Mulgoa project is among 33 across the State to share in $8million under the Community Bush Regeneration large projects grants. The Landcare Group meets on the first Saturday of the month and would love to have some additional volunteers. Phone Lisa on 0411 487 512 for details of the next activity site.

Stress and our Wellbeing In modern society, with all the pressures that life entails, many people operate under constant stress – this eventually becomes what is termed “General Adaptation Syndrome.” Constant stress means our nervous system goes into “resistance phase” where the stress hormones cortisol and thyroxine stimulates energy production & insulin secretion. This results in increased sodium absorption which inturn increases our blood pressure and arterial damage. If the resistance phase is undealt with, we can go into “exhaustion phase” The body uses up our alkalysing minerals, to maintain properblood pH levels. This results in adrenal exhaustion, inhibited immune response, poor neurotransmitters response and possible glutamate excess resulting in insomnia, anxiety and even panic attacks. This causes oxidative stress and increased inflammation which can then incur cellular damage or cell death. This also prevents proper glucose uptake into in cells and that’s why constant stress causes cravings for carbs and sugar. This results in insulin resistance. Our body deposits more adipose fatty tissue in the abdominal area, known as truncal obesity. When we’re stressed, temptation to turn to comfort foods can be powerful, and if we’re in a hurry, fast-foods become the order of the day contributing to weight gain. As a Naturopath, I have a range of highly effective natural medicines that can keep the body strong, boost immunity and soothe a frazzled nervous sytem. I am also able to offer lifestyle and nutritional counselling which can help you improve your outcomes naturally. You can make an appointment today by contacting Michelle Beech on 4721 0101. 10

THERMOMIX comes to Glenmore Park Save time and money and improve your family’s meal times and kitchen creativity with the most advanced kitchen appliance on the market today. You might have seen it on TV recently or read some of the rave reviews in foodie magazines or but if you haven’t heard of it, the Thermomix TM31 unites the functions of more than 10 appliances in one compact unit all-in-one food processor. It’s a cooker that chops, beats, mixes, whips, grinds, kneads, minces, grates, juices, blends, heats, stirs, steams and weighs food, as well as other functions! Featuring a gearless long-life motor, steel blades and a stainless steel bowl, Thermomix brings a new dimension to food preparation and cooking. Faster and more efficient than any similar appliance, it saves time, money and space in the kitchen. Incredibly precise and powerful speed and temperature settings allow for smoother texture, better colour retention and faster speed of execution. Preparation is cut from minutes to seconds and cooking is gentle, ensuring the flavours, vitamins and minerals are locked into each mouthful. Best of all, one bowl and blade do it all. With today’s fast paced lifestyle, we cook far less than we used to. The ready-made foods that feature in today’s diet aren’t the best options. Thermomix lets users return to the tradition of home-style cooking using superior, streamlined technology, making it simple to bring fresh, wholesome, nutrient-dense food back into our diets. Thermomix is particularly valuable for people with special dietary restrictions like coeliac disease and food allergies as they can precisely control what goes into the food they cook. This also means they can monitor the addition of harmful additives, colours and preservatives. Technology has come a long way since the days when our forbearers had to churn butter or grind grains by hand. While these products are now readily available on the supermarket shelves, they often contain additives to encourage a longer life, a stronger flavour or colour. Using Thermomix, you can make your own basic foods such as bread dough, tomato sauce, icing sugar and even flour with all natural products in a fraction of the time. You can control what goes into your food, which means no more inspecting packaging for traces of allergens. Thermomix is sold exclusively through in-home demonstrations where a wide range of foods are prepared for tasting for a small group of people. There is absolutely no obligation or high pressure sales talk, just a fun opportunity to see this amazing appliance in action. Have a look at the website www.thermomix.com.au or phone 1800 004 838 for more details or to organise a home demonstration with your local consultant.

PARENT’S CORNER

What’s On In Term 3?

How is the volume at your place?

NCNS is a not for profit organisation designed to offer support to the community and it’s members.

Find yourself yelling at the kids most of the time? Are the kids learning to yell back at you or at each other? Many of the parents who come to parenting groups say “I’m tired of yelling at my kids, there has to be something else I can do to get my kids to listen to me”. One parent said “I tell my kids not to hurt each other, and then I smack them for hitting – it doesn’t make sense”. There is a saying that goes “If you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail”. Many parents don’t want to smack their kids or yell at them anymore, but they are not sure what else they can do. There are so many positive ways of communicating with your child, turning down the volume, and making connection with your child. Many of the parenting strategies in parenting courses like Triple P (Positive Parenting Programme) are backed by fifty years of research into parenting. Almost every parent who comes to a parenting group tells the same story about feeling isolated and judged. They frequently say that their family and friends ridiculed them for wanting to learn more about parenting. Parenting courses like Triple P are not for hippies or nohopers. They are for people who truly care about the way they are raising their children and wanting a better life for them. They also want to squeeze some joy out of their parenting and build a relationship with their child which will stand the test of adolescence. Find out more about Triple P at http://www.families. nsw.gov.au/triple-p/resources.htm or search for a Triple P group at Resourcing Parents www.resourcingparents. com. The new site was launched on behalf of NSW Minister for Health, the Hon. It also has forums that are totally mobile so you can take it with you and have a virtual cuppa and chat with other parents, all while you enjoy your latte at your local breastfeedingfriendly café. Regentville Public School Going from Strength to Strength 2012 started with Mrs Karen Maraga taking up the position of principal, ninety seven Kindergarten students beginning their formal education and the school growing in size to its current 652 students. Another win at the district swimming and cross country carnivals makes it eight years in a row for swimming and seven out of eight for cross country. Our Rugby League Under 9 and the 48kg teams won their respective grand finals in the Penrith District competition. The Under 9 team will go on to represent Penrith District at the NSW State Cup at the end of July. The school band, the junior and senior choir and our dance group have all been accepted into the Penrith Valley Performing Arts Festival to be held at the Joan Sutherland Centre in August. The school debating team has been working hard this year after finishing runners up in last years’ competition. They have won their first round debate and are busily preparing for their next round. Regentville Public School has hosted an Academically Gifted Class, consisting of 28 students from across Penrith Valley, who have been attending our school every Tuesday this term. This class has given some of the brightest students in the Penrith Valley the opportunity to work with like-minded students. Regentville Public School was represented by five students who have been assisting the visiting teachers and helping classmates find their way around our school. The next six months are looking to be just as busy and exciting as the first.

Young Careers Recognised The G l e n m o r e Park Cricket Club has built a proud history in its short existence, and just last month handed out another three ‘Career Bats’ which recognise longevity with the club. Earned only by players who play their entire junior career with the club, to-date the club has issued fewer than 30 such career bats. The last three to be added to that esteemed list in 2012 were Cameron Burke, Nathan Milgate and Rhyley Wilson [pictured]. Furthermore, Cameron & Rhyley also became only the second & third players in the clubs history to play 10 seasons in the junior ranks - quite an achievement and tremendous show of loyalty to the Redbacks. Many former juniors of the Glenmore Park Cricket Club have gone on to further achievements - the highest representation to date being John Hastings who’s become a regular member of the Australian Twenty20 & One Day International teams. Want to play cricket? Next seasons registrations are being taken during July & August for all Juniors & Seniors.
