From the Editor Welcome to the March edition of your community news. If you’re anything like me, you have had a busy month with children settling back into school, picking up on old routines and creating new ones, with homework, sporting and social commitments. It is hard to believe we have already arrived at March, with one-quarter of the year having escaped us! We have some wonderful local stories for your reading pleasure; including our feature story about Sapphire Cafe’s commitment in supporting the ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ this month. This month we have lots of information for families in our Parents Corner on page 12, along with some spectacular school achievements to start the year off! Kayla’s story on page 3 is touching and a matter close to my heart. Do take the time to have a read, discover, decide and discuss. Of course, March 17 is St Patrick’s Day, you will find some fun facts and, as the ‘Luck of the Irish’ would have it, we have some hearty Irish inspired recipes in ‘What’s Cooking’ on page 14. Enjoy ‘Your Community News’; and don’t be pushed by your problems, be led by your dreams.

Six year old Glenmore Park resident Kyla Devine (pictured) was born with the medical condition Biliary Atresia. Biliary Atresia is a blockage in the tubes (ducts) that carry liquid called bile from the liver to the gallbladder. The condition occurs when the bile ducts inside and/or outside the liver do not develop normally. It is not known why the biliary system fails to develop normally and the exact cause of the condition is unknown. It occurs once in every 15,000 births and is slightly more prevalent in girls than boys. Biliary Atresia is treated through a procedure called Kasai Procedure that connects the liver directly to the intestine to allow for removal of bile. 1 in 3 are successful. In Kyla’s case, the Kasai Procedure was unsuccessful and she had a liver transplant at the age of 5 months. Today, Kyla is a bright and happy year one student, who is here today thanks to an organ donor. It was Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Week from February 23 to March 2. Various Lions Clubs across the State recently held sausage sizzles on March 1 and 2 at over 90% of the 75 available Bunnings locations throughout New South Wales. In conjunction with DonateLife, the Lions Clubs were able to pass on valuable information and knowledge about organ donation as well as raise funds through the BBQ’s. Donor registration information was available at Bunnings North Penrith. To register to become an organ and tissue donor, visit www.donorregister.gov.au to register online. You can also call 1800 777203 or visit a Medicare Service Centre. Your local GP may also have registration forms. You must be 16 years or older to register your organ donation decision on the register.

The Joy of Serving It’s sort of funny when the world catches up with stuff that God has always been saying. I often have a bit of a smile when some piece of research is released affirming something that the Bible has been teaching since time began. Increasingly, scientists are discovering that serving others is good for our health and general well-being. And that on the other hand, being self-centred can actuallyy damage not just your physical but also your mental well-being. For example, a recent survey of 4½ thousand American adults found that 68% said doing things for other people made them feel physically healthier. 89% said it improved their sense of well being. 73% experienced lower stress. 92% said it enriched their sense of purpose in life. 96% were happier. 77% had improved emotional health. 78% reported it helped their recovery from loss and disappointment. Overwhelmingly, it is being discovered that people who serve others experienced greater optimism, less trouble sleeping, less anxiety, helplessness and hopelessness, better friendships and social networks, and a greater sense of control over chronic conditions. But here’s the thing – God always been saying this! The Bible’s Old Testament book of Proverbs tells us; “Those who are kind benefit themselves, but the cruel bring ruin on themselves.â€? In the New Testament book of Acts, we find the recorded words of Jesus; “...the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’â€? Ultimately, the Bible reveals how Jesus served us at the point of our greatest need; “...the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.â€? Jesus served us by giving his life for us, to rescue us from the fact that none of us treats God as we should or give Him the place of honour that He deserves in our lives. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we would love to share with you this wonderful transforming good news of Jesus and the wonder and liberating joy of learning what it means to truly serve one another! We’d love to see you at one of our Sunday Church Services and at some of our special activities throughout the week. There really is something for everybody! Want to find out more? Give me a call on 4733 1635. Rev John Lavender

Building Strong Families I don’t think I will ever really appreciate how hard it is to build a house...I’ve never personally experienced building but I’ve had a taste of it when we renovated our second home. Building is really hard work, but building stronger families is even harder! King Solomon in the Old testament was a great builder and was commissioned to build the house that God would live in, the great temple in Jerusalem. Solomon was probably better known for his wisdom and he wrote many proverbs and popular sayings, some of which we use even today. But for all his hard work and accomplishments, the success he gained and the wealth he attained, Solomon couldn’t build a strong family. He failed his wife and instead of honouring God with one wife, he married 700 wives and served them and their gods. He failed his children, failing to pass on godly wisdom, so the next in line Rehoboam made such a mess of the kingdom, that the nation divided in two and from that time onwards Israel was never the same again. The great king had lost his way. Building strong families begins with building a relationship with the master builder and Psalm 127, ironically written by the great king Solomon gives some insight into how to build strong families: Prioritise your time so that God is first. 1 Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. 2 It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; Take some time out each day to reflect on God and realign our

6 March 2014 www.glenmoregazette.com.au

priorities. Some of us have drifted far from God and the strength of our family reflects this. He is of course the master builder, so take time out to revisit faith and your belief in God. Don’t spend all your time working and slaving away and have nothing left for what matters to God. God gave us more than enough time to live and labour and to earn our daily bread and to find pleasure in the days of our lives even whilst in a deep and significant relationship with God. We have 168 hours per week to live so we can make time firstly to read God’s word. The Bible is the word of God speaking eternal truths to us. Pray for your family, your children and your spouse. Prayer is how you bring your requests to God. It might seem a little weird to engage the creator this way and some of us have forgotten that God made us to be spiritual as well as physical and emotional and therefore things like prayer should be a staple diet for family builders. Make a plan to build a stronger family You wouldn’t consider achieving many things without a detailed plan. Building a house requires plans, financial security and fitness regimes all require us to sit down to think carefully about the future. Building stronger families is no different. I have met my fair share of Solomons over the years, intelligent successful people that have navigated through their work life, business and career but had not enough wisdom was to build stronger families. Take some time this week to jot down a vision for the shape you’d like to see your family take and then five things you can do to plan for this change. God bless, Rev Mark Bonnici

The community of Penrith is thrilled to play host to an exciting new business, 737Jet. 737Jet is a flight simulator experience that opened at the beginning of January this year. Owners Steve and Karina Wally started building the simulator a year ago and decided to share the experience with the public and train commercial pilots. At 737Jet, you can experience taking a flight from a Captain’s point of view. You learn to fly a 90 tonne commercial jet in as little as 30 minutes. They also offer 45min, 60min and 90min experiences. The experiences are suitable for 15 year olds and over. Height is restricted to 195cm and weight to 150kg. These restrictions are for the customer’s safety and comfort. Customers are also able to join the 737Jet Flight Club. Members will enjoy special benefits and be the first to receive discount offers. They will always receive a discount that can be shared with family and friends with the 737Jet Gift Vouchers. Steve’s previous knowledge gained from building flight simulators for the military and his passion for technology and flying inspired him and his wife Karina, to build the business in Penrith. ‘What excites us most is seeing the huge smile on our customer’s faces when they step out of the simulator after a successful (or not so successful) landing’ he said. Experiences can be booked via their website, www.737jet.com.au or by phone on 4722 5747. Customers are welcome to visit, although they are open by appointment only and so it’s best to give them a call to arrange a time. Prepare for take-off! 4722 5747 | www.737jet.com.au

Lent: What’s it all about? ASH WEDNESDAY falls quite late this year, on 05 March, reflecting the fact that Easter falls late, Easter Sunday being 20 April this year. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the Christian season of Lent, a season of forty days characterised by a more intense self-reflection on how we as disciples of Christ are doing with regard to living as Jesus has called us to live. Lent is noted for three practices which, whilst always a part of the life of any serious Christian, are given more prominence during Lent. They are: fasting, prayer and almsgiving. These three practices are referred to by Jesus himself in the Gospel which is proclaimed to the faithful on Ash Wednesday (from Matthew, chapter 6). It is always heartening to see the numbers that fill our Catholic churches on Ash Wednesday. It indicates that people take their faith seriously and recognise that in order to live the life of unconditional love in imitation of Jesus, there needs to be some gathering and ritual whereby a public commitment is made to do acknowledge our failures and make a renewed effort to be more Christlike. Covering oneself with ashes is symbolic of being sorry for one’s sins and there are many examples in the Old Testament of people dressing in sackcloth and covering themselves with ashes as a sign of repentance. Perhaps one of the most famous examples is found in the book of Jonah (yes, the same Jonah said to have been swallowed by a whale!) whereby after Jonah tells the city of Nineveh to repent, the king of Nineveh “rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.” (Jonah 3:6) We are

less dramatic than the king of Nineveh and simply mark our foreheads with ashes. The ashes we use are made from the burning of the palms used in the previous year’s Palm Sunday celebration. Ash Wednesday is the start of forty days of serious preparation for the greatest season in the Christian calendar, Easter. I will write about Easter in an upcoming edition of the Glenmore Gazette. If you are a little on the pedantic side and count the number of days between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday however, you will note that there are, in fact, forty-six days, not the forty days of Lent that we are led to expect. Why? This is because, strictly speaking, we do not count the six Sundays that fall between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday as being a part of Lent. This is because every Sunday in the year is regarded as a “mini Easter”, even in Lent. Many Catholics will ease up on their fasting and penitential practices on the Sundays in Lent as a means of recognising the importance of Sunday. Some however, will continue their strict regime. It’s a personal choice. Wishing you all the best in this season of Lent and I pray that you will find a renewed spirit of zeal to live more like Jesus and so know true contentment and joy. Our parish is a vibrant and active Christian community. If you would like to join us, particularly those who may not attend our Masses regularly or new residents in the area, we would love to welcome you here as part of our friendly, inclusive and familyoriented community. Looking forward to welcoming you! Blessings and prayers, Fr Robert Riedling

Pastor Paul Marshall • Sundays 9:30am @ Regentville Public School • www.fvc.org.au

Soul Matters When life throws the kitchen sink at us and we need “higher help” it is natural to ask: Is God real? Our lack of belief in God as a loving and powerful Person who is interested in us isn’t enough to be conclusive on this question because the truth is the truth whether we believe it or not. If, for example, there is in fact a platypus in the back yard but we don’t believe it, our doubt doesn’t change the truth. In the same way, if God is in fact as the Bible describes him, our lack of faith doesn’t make him a religious fantasy. Also, our personal lack of experience of God’s grace alone proves little about what God is doing in the world, because this experience is also dependent upon whether or not we are actually relating with God. If you never relate to a certain person, it makes sense that not much will happen between you because you don’t have a relationship. The same is true with God. When we relate with God we give him access to our souls and lives. This means access to his love and power to help us find peace and to deal with the “kitchen sink” flying at us. The Bible says it this way: “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” If we keep God at arm’s length and don’t give him access to us, can we really expect him to be close and involved with in our lives? Relating with God is like relating with other people: our heart must be “in it”- we must be open and trust, we must expect something good to come of it, and we must be involved through conversation and in other ways. Jesus was sent to show us what

8 March 2014 www.glenmoregazette.com.au

God is like and to be the focus of an open, trusting relationship with him. I can understand that there are aspects of religion today that put people off God, but these stem from the weaknesses in people not God himself. Relationship with him is about the heart and faith – about inwardly coming near to God so that he can come near to us. When I sailed boats as a kid I learnt that dragging a deadweight sailing boat across the sand is real hernia territory. But once the boat is on the water with sail up, it is easy to steer and to take somewhere. In the same way, to find God’s mercy when life throws the kitchen sink at us we need to be a moving vessel in terms of our attitude towards God, our openness, and expectancy. When we are sceptical and negative about God (even if life circumstances or religion gives us good cause to feel this way) we are like spiritual dead-weight. But when we are relating with God - on the water with sail up – he can blow in our sails and take us somewhere. Our prayers become more powerful and effective because we have positioned ourselves to receive the mercy of God in whatever way it might come to us. In Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day, people traditionally wear a small bunch of shamrocks on their jackets or caps. Children wear orange, white and green badges, and women and girls wear green ribbons in their hair.

HOW TO BECOME DEBT FREE Albert Einstein said “The most powerful force in the universe is Compound Interest” and for anyone juggling a Mortgage, car payments and a couple of credit cards it sure feels like it! At some point we’ve tried to reduce our debts. Perhaps paying a little extra on our credit cards, car loan and Mortgage or even worse consolidating our debts only to find our credit cards maxed out again. What if you could be completely Debt Free in around 10 years, Home Loan included? No tricky schemes and no fancy debt consolidation! The strategy is actually quite simple but very effective. All you need to do is this. Increase your total repayments by 10% and focus these extra funds towards your smallest debt. 30 Years of Adventure! Adventure Preschool in Regentville proudly celebrated its 30th birthday last month. The preschool’s current owner, Kellyanne Gianatti, celebrated the historic milestone through an ‘Open Week’ that was held from 3rd to 7th February. The doors were open for past, present and future families/ students to see just how much the preschool had grown and developed. There will also be another significant milestone for the preschool this year, with original owner and founder Vicki Turner’s grandson, 4 year old Ashton Paduch attending. Business owner Kellyanne Gianatti could not be any more pleased with Adventure Preschool’s achievements. “We’re very excited about the preschool celebrating its birthday. Our staff put in lots of hard work and we take pride in the school exceeding the national standards. Panic Attacks

If you have ever experienced a panic attack or witnessed someone having one, you will know it can be a very frightening experience. Panic attacks are periods of intense fear or apprehension that come on suddenly. They are surprisingly common, varying in intensity and duration from minutes to hours. Signs and symptoms of a panic attack include: • A sense of overwhelming & seemingly uncontrollable panic, fear or anxiety • The thought that you are dying or ‘losing control’ or ‘going mad’ • Increased heart rate, often feeling like a heart attack • Difficulty breathing (feeling that there is not enough air) • Excessive perspiration • Dizziness, light-headedness or feeling faint. Triggers for panic attacks - basically any fear can trigger a panic attack – the memory of a traumatic experience and the thought that it could re-occur; fear of heights & falling, spiders, needles, flying, getting lost, etc. As an onlooker what can you do? Stay calm and assure the person that they are safe. Speak gently but assertively and positively & get some help if necessary. If the person is in any danger, encourage them to move to a safe area. What can be done to prevent them? By working with a therapist to address the underlying fear, the severity and frequency of panic attacks can be greatly reduced, if not avoided. EFT is effective, safe & noninvasive and is gaining world-wide recognition for helping people eliminate their fears.

Glenmore Park Residents Group Update We believe very little information has been put out to residents of Glenmore Park and surrounding areas about the proposed airport. Some information was reported recently via the media, and we would agree with the comment about reports needing to be updated. With reference to growth in the area since the original report many years ago and the effect on residents, noise, environmental and infrastructure such as roads and many more concerns . GPRG are currently arranging for a number of key speakers to attend our meeting and update residents as to what they are currently doing or know about with reference to the Airport proposal and bring the residents up to date. This will be a good opportunity for concerned residents to have a say and ask questions. However we are trying to arrange the meeting with relevant people who can give us an update and advice. The proposed date at the moment for the meeting would be Tuesday 15th April, with venue details and time to be advised. Our next GPRG meeting will be 18th March, 7pm at Floribunda Community Centre and we should have a better idea as to details for the proposed meeting. Also, it would be great if we can get some volunteers and assistance with running the Glenmore Park Residents Group as we need more committee members. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, if you can assist please contact John on 0417 277 393. Please keep in mind that collectively we can do more than what we can on an individual basis, looking forward to catching up.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

How are you settling into the new-ish year? With the kids back at pre/primary/high school, it’s onto sizzling routines, packing lunch boxes (sigh), washing school clothes, class information nights, notes from school, and lots of organising. It’s full-on isn’t it? Sometimes with all of this ‘doing’ we forget about ‘being’ with our kids. When do you make the time to just ‘be’ with your kids? Time that’s free of distractions, where you ‘hang-out’ and enjoy each other’s company, where there is space for them to talk about what matters to them (the big stuff and little stuff ) , and where you LISTEN. Some parents say their kids won’t talk to them, or they can’t get past the one word answers like ‘good’, ‘nothing’, ‘nowhere’, and ‘nobody’. I ask those parents if they make the time, and if they do, then do they shut-up? Kids clam up when parents pressure kids for answers, jump in and offer advice, rouse on them for getting things wrong when they’ve had a go. Kids are actually very smart and they can be supported to generate their own solutions to their problems – yes, even really little kids. I have spaces in the day where I am “with” my kids and fill it with my silence and my presence – the walk home from school, afternoon tea, a snuggle on the lounge, one-on-one time with each of the kids even if it is just grocery shopping. Silence is one of my favourite parenting tools, but with the silence comes my openness and willingness to listen and use reflection when my kids talk (for more information about this, go to the “Reflective Listening” post at handsheartsminds.wordpress.com). I recently asked a group of parents the qualities they value in a friend. They said someone who: • is non-judgemental • listens, listens, listens • doesn’t bombard you with advice • doesn’t blab on about their own stuff, or lecture • you can trust • cares You are not your child’s friend, but your role as a parent should offer the same kindness. When do you offer these qualities and ‘the time’ to your child? hild?

COFFEE CHAT with Glenmore Coffee Costa Rican Tarrazu In many people’s opinion , Costa Rican Tarrazu is one of the world’s greatest coffees. It has a light clean flavour and a wonderful fragrance. Description Costa Rica, with its rich, well-drained volcanic soil, was the first Central American country to grow coffee and bananas on a commercial basis and both commodities are among its major exports. Coffee was introduced into Costa Rica from Cuba in 1729 and today the industry is one of the best organised in the world. The best Costa Rican coffee is labelled “SHB” (Strictly Hard Bean ) which means that it has been grown at an altitude above 5,000 feet (1,500 metres). Higher altitudes produce better beans because it produces a higher acidity in the bean and also because the colder nights and regular rainfall at these high altitudes cause the beans to mature much slower. Both these two aspects create a fuller flavour.

Profile Flavour: Silky and full acidity Suggested Roast: Medium to dark

Ingredients • 3 cups good quality vanilla ice cream • 1 3/4 cups 1% milk • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract • Green food colouring, if desired Method 1. Blend all ingredients in a blender until completely thick and smooth. 2. Pour into glasses and serve! http://www.babble.com/best-recipes/the-mcdonalds-shamrock-shake-copycat-recipe/

COUNSELLING CORNER with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All P: 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 E: lindacassell@bigpond.com

Positive relationships are the key to success, happiness and harmony Professor Martin Seligman, the founder of Positive Psychology suggests that the most important thing in life is the cultivation of quality relationships. He states; ‘Everything is about relationships. Success in business, work, intimacy, friendship, family and even the self (the way you treat yourself is crucial)… is determined by the quality of your relationships.’ He argues that the key to fantastic relationships is not about fighting less, but actively praising more. In fact, in his research, this was the number 1 factor in regards to whether people remain together or not. ‘Think of it like a bank account. Every time you praise, encourage and show an active interest in your partner and their successes, you are making large deposits. So when there are arguments (withdrawals), you’re still going to have a positive balance.’ So how do you do this? He suggests to think of it like positive storytelling and discussion of skilled applications. For example, if your partner has just been promoted, the best response is not just to say ‘congratulations’, but to also enquire about why they deserved it, what skills they utilized to achieve it, and how they will continue to use those skills and abilities to grow in the future. In other words, create and share a positive story together about the victory and the positive future success that are likely to occur as well. Don’t forget that other research has found the need for five positive comments to every one (negative) or correcting comment if you want a quality live giving relationship.

KEEPING FIT WITH Rj Functional Training Functional training has been one of the biggest buzz words in the fitness industry for over the last ten years, but what is it? And why is everyone leaning towards this style of training? Put simply, functional training teaches our muscles to work together, rather than isolating specific muscle groups. By focusing on exercises that require you to use movements that you perform in everyday tasks (such as standing, bending, twisting, leaning and reaching) you are not only strengthening your overall core stability and balance, but it is also great for fat/weight loss and assists in injury prevention and rehabilitation. In our one80 functional training classes, exercises are chosen carefully based on relevance to the client. Equipment such as TRX, dumbbells, kettle bells, ropes and medicine balls, are used in a safe, controlled, small group environment. I believe we will continue to see growth in this area as more people begin to understand the benefits of functional training. Come down and try a one80 class today! Happy Training! Camille’s Pets!! I am so lucky that I can take my dogs to work with me every day. They sleep behind the front reception desk and pop up occasionally to say hello to the customers. Bella is my 13 year old kelpie. She had a slight cough for 3 weeks and had chest radiographs and a heart ultrasound performed.

Bella was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a heart disease which causes the heart muscle to lose its ability to contract. As the heart is not pumping blood forward effectively, the blood backs up and causes fluid to build up in the chest, which Bella was then coughing up. Bella was started on heart medications and the cough has reduced and she is as happy as ever. The usual outcome for DCM is only a few months, and Bella is now in her 7th month.

Each day I have with my best friend Bella is a gift. Pony is my Great Dane x Bull Mastiff. He is coming up to 3 years of age and he is still stubborn as a mule. I was kind of looking for a new dog to keep Pony company when Bella passes away, when I found a new dog at Hawkesbury Pound in October 2013. My new dogs name is Callie, she is 1.5 years of age and is a Great Dane x Italian Greyhound according to the DNA test I had performed. Callie is 45kg and looks a lot like Pony, except she is a brown harlequin colour. I only had Callie for about 1 week before she became unwell. She had a fever and she was very quiet. Blood tests and ultrasound did not reveal the cause of her illness. I sent Callie to see the specialists at SASH at North Ryde, where they performed a spinal tap to obtain a sample of her spinal fluid. The spinal fluid was tested and was negative for bacteria, protozoa and fungi. Callie was diagnosed with Steroid Responsive MeningitisArteritis (SRMA), which is an autoimmune disease which attacks the central nervous system. Thankfully SRMA is treatable.

Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital

Callie was started on a 6 month course of corticosteroids, and she was back to normal within 1 week. Callie ate and drank like a horse whilst on the corticosteroids, which is a normal side effect of this drug. Callie was weaned off the corticosteroids and thankfully has had no relapse of the meningitis.

Bella still runs my household and Pony and Callie are like 2 peas in a pod. Every day I have Bella is a blessing and even though I have had time to prepare, I will never be ready for the day when Bella passes away. I also have 3 cats and 2 pet sheep, but they don’t come to work with me! Check out our website for more information. www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. .
