Ched Towns Playground Revealed Fences have come down on the Ched Towns Playground site, revealing Glenmore Park’s second large playground, right in the heart of the shopping centre and recreation area. “The Ched Towns playground complements the district playground in the child and family precinct of Glenmore Park,” Penrith Mayor Mark Davies said. “It provides Glenmore Park with a second large playground, with significant shading and a mix of equipment for younger and older children,” Cr Davies said. The playground was funded using $180,000 in developer levies. The park’s equipment includes a bird nest swing, an adventure net, a six metre pyramid net, a g-pod spinner, a junior swing, and embankment slide and a junior play module. “The design is nestled on a tiered bank, and encourages parents and visitors to use the natural sandstone and block seat areas and enjoy the playground,” Cr Davies said. “The position and size of this playground, with its well-shaded areas, is sure to attract many families from and visitors to Glenmore Park,” Cr Davies said.

BUCKET BRIGADE

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED This year McHappy Day is aiming to raise $3.4 million for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) and is calling on Glenmore Park community groups and organisations to form a ‘Bucket Brigade’ to help reach their target. McDonald’s Glenmore Park will host McHappy Day activities on Saturday November 9, and community groups including local businesses, dance groups, the fire brigade and ambulance, are encouraged to get involved by volunteering their time and forming a ‘Bucket Brigade’ to collect donations at their local restaurant. This year’s fundraising target would equate to funding over 27,000 tuition sessions through the Ronald McDonald Learning Program, which helps children recovering from serious illness catch up on missed schooling. “The Bucket Brigades are a simple and easy way for people in the community to get involved and help make a difference to the lives of families with seriously ill children,” said Ian Garton, licensee, McDonald’s Glenmore Park. “One in eight people either have been or know someone who has been affected by childhood illness so I am sure there are people in the local community who know the heartache and stress of having a child with a serious illness,” added Ian. RMHC creates, finds and supports programs across Australia that help seriously ill children and their families including, but not limited to, Ronald McDonald Houses, the Ronald McDonald Learning Program and Ronald McDonald Family Rooms. To date, the 14 Ronald McDonald Houses across Australia alone have provided more than 85,000 families with a ‘home away from home’ while their child has undergone treatment for serious illness at a nearby hospital – but there are more families in need. To meet the growing need from families over the next few years, RMHC is aiming to build new or extend up to five Houses, open 12 more Family Rooms, as well as extending and developing other programs such as the Ronald McDonald Learning Program. To volunteer a ‘Bucket Brigade’ team to help out on McHappy Day, please contact the McHappy Day Project Office on mchappyday@ppr.com.au.

About McHappy Day Now in its 23rd year, McHappy Day is one of Australia’s most important and high profile charity events and raises funds for Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), which creates, finds and supports programs across Australia that help seriously ill children and their families. About Ronald McDonald House Charities: Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is an independent charity that helps seriously ill children and their families. The cornerstone program of RMHC, the Ronald McDonald House Program provides a ‘home away from home’ for families of seriously ill children being treated at nearby hospitals, and gives families the opportunity to stay together to support their sick children. Other programs include; the Ronald McDonald Family Room Program, which provides a relaxing haven within hospitals giving families a break from the stress of many hours spent by their child’s bedside, and The Ronald McDonald Learning Program which helps children recovering from serious illness catch up on missed schooling. Additionally, the Ronald McDonald Family Retreat Program provides families with seriously ill children a week’s free accommodation, enabling them to reconnect and enjoy a break when they most need it and can least afford it, and the newest program, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile taking specialised health care professionals to children in regional and remote areas.

As you read this, many thousands of Year 12 High School students are preparing to sit their HSC/IB examinations. Thirteen years of schooling coming to an end in several weeks of tough exams. Then, once the exams are over, comes weeks of anxious waiting for the results. It is a nervous wait – will the results be good enough to gain entry into the career or course of their choice, or, if the student falls short, will it end in disappointment? What would happen if this was the way that God examined our life? A lot of people do think this is what will happen at the end of our life; that God will examine every part of our life and he will make a decision about whether we pass or fail. Is this what happens? Consider what the Apostle Paul says in the book of ‘Romans’ in the Bible, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” In other words, not one of us has reached God’s standard; we all fall short. Jesus himself puts God’s standard before us in the book of ‘Matthew’ in the Bible; “Be perfect, therefore as your heavenly Father is perfect.” If God’s standard is perfection and all of us have fallen short, where does that leave us? Like a Year 12 student who misses out? Or is there hope? See again what the Apostle Paul says in ‘Romans’, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Here is great news! What the Bible is saying, is that Jesus has sat the exam for us and he has been found to be perfect. Where we have failed, Jesus has passed and the success of that pass is made available to any person who would turn to Jesus and commit their life to him. You do not have to fear or be uncertain about what will happen at the last examination, because in every sense, Jesus is the answer! What great news this is! Can I encourage each of you to take up Jesus’ offer and turn to Him? You won’t regret it! And to all the HSC/IB students – all the best to you as you finish off your exams! I would like to personally invite you all to our special 7pm Night Church Service on Sunday 13th October where we will be hearing from previous Year 12 students and spending some time praying for all Year 12 students and their families! We’d love to see you. Rev John Lavender

A person cannot taste food unless it is mixed with saliva. For example, if a strong-tasting substance like salt is placed on a dry tongue, the taste buds will not be able to taste it. As soon as a drop of saliva is added and the salt is dissolved, however, a definite taste sensation results. This is true for all foods. Try it!

CHRIST CHURCH @ THE COLLEGE

Rev Mark Bonnici • Christ Church @ The College • www.christchurchatthecollege.com.au

Run the Race As the warmer weather sets in I often see more people trying desperately to get in shape for the warmer months. I see them arrive, I see them struggle, I see them collapse in a heap and I see them give up. This is because running, like many sports, is a discipline. It takes time, a good deal of time to train the body and the mind to work through the pain of endurance. It takes years for the body to build the resistance to pain, for our muscles to develop and strengthen and for our minds to adopt a steely resolve. The Christian walk is no different. In fact the writer of the letter to the Hebrews compares the Christian life to a race: Let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. I find this teaching relevant to all people regardless of belief because discipline of the mind and body is so easily translated to the discipline of the spirit and soul. I wonder whether you have ever thought to take a wholistic approach to fitness, striving to gain a healthy mind, body and spirit. It is here I find Christianity speaks to humanity in such a powerful and realistic way. There are at least three principles we can apply to our daily lives from this Bible passage. Run Simply – We are taught in this passage to lay aside every weight and sin which clings so closely. I love to run and try to get out 2-3 times a week. Whenever I run, it’s never with a parka and layers of clothes, jeans and boots! I want to throw off everything that slows me down until all that is left are the bare essentials, a pair of shorts, a light singlet and my running shoes. Many of us are so caught up with materialism that we have become spiritually fat, relying on everything else in life but God. This is sin and can take shape in the form of gluttony (when we consume too much), covetousness (when we desire what our neighbour has) and greed (when we become overly self focussed to the detriment of others) and

6 October 2013 www.glenmoregazette.com.au

sometimes we can even see our spiritual sin manifest in our physical lack of health. The Bible teaches us to run this life throwing all of these off so that we may run freely. Run for distance – The next part of the verse teaches us to run with endurance. Whenever I run, I run for distance, between 5-15km. When I run therefore I must run for distance. Endurance in running is built on repetition and training ourselves to resist pain. Running 10km is my favourite race although I don’t run that many these days. Firstly, I’m conscious to pace myself and to regulate my breathing, developing a slow and consistent pattern. Similarly, this race of life we are in is not a 100 metre dash, it’s a marathon and will take us a lifetime to complete. Many of us struggle to gain a consistent pattern in our spiritual life, often wavering in church attendance, Bible reading and our prayer life. The Bible teaches us to lock in these non-negotiables so that we can run with consistency. Secondly, I must endure pain. Running a 10km distance begins to take its toll on me at the eight km mark. After eight kms two things happen: Firstly I begin to experience pain in my legs to the point of pulling up and at the same time I begin to focus on the goal of completing the race as I get closer to the end. It is this tension between the pain of attrition and the goal ahead which becomes the furnace for endurance and it is endurance which brings us to the end. Run with the goal in mind – Running the race of life is hard enough at the best of times but becomes much harder when we live aimlessly, without a goal or a purpose. The Bible tells us that Jesus is the goal that spurs us on even through the hard times and this is because he has been through it himself before us. We are told that he endured the cross so that he may be raised up as the Lord of heaven and earth. We are told that he was able to focus on the joy before him even though he would endure even death to attain it. It is this motivation that gives us hope and a will to endure which also raises a wonderful reality for all believers. It is that just as Jesus was raised to life, the same promise awaits all who place their trust in him. Considering then that we are all running the race of life, this Bible passage raises two good questions for us to consider: How are we running and to what end do we run? Bless you, Rev Mark Bonnici

When is a Pre-Approval not an Approval?

Armed with a Pre-Approval letter from your bank you walk confidently into the Real Estate office and make an offer on your dream home. You’re delighted when shortly after the Agent gives you a call to tell you that your offer is accepted. It’s your dream come true. So now you go back to your bank with the property details, sign some paperwork to get your full approval. But a day or two later the bank calls and tells you your application has been declined. “But I was Pre-Approved!” you say “Surely getting a full approval was just a formality?” This scenario is faced by many homebuyers but the sad fact is that often a Pre-Approval has not been through the full credit process but is rather a calculation of your borrowing capacity. That means that if the bank doesn’t like your income type, your employment, your deposit, your credit history or any number of things, they can decline your loan. If you’re hunting for property having a Pre-Approval is great, just as long as it has been through the full credit process, and that takes longer than the 30 minutes that some banks promote. Your best bet is to get your Pre-Approval from a reputable Mortgage Broker.

Time with the Poor Last month I wrote about some of the highlights of World Youth Day (WYD) held in Rio in July and promised to share something of the pilgrims’ experiences in Lima, Peru, before we headed off to Rio for the main event. Our time in Lima was perhaps the most engaging and challenging part of our pilgrimage because for most of the pilgrims it was an opportunity to encounter something they hadn’t engaged with before – extreme poverty. For most people the idea of travelling overseas to live among the poor and work with these people, even for just a few days, is not exactly appealing. Most of us travel overseas as tourists and seek out the various tourist attractions, stay in comfortable accommodation and eat quite well, often indulging ourselves more than just a little! The pilgrim, however, needs to remind themselves of why they are travelling to a particular destination. It is not for the purposes of seeing famous landmarks or indulging the senses or for rest and relaxation – it is to deepen their relationship with God and God’s people in a particular manner, whether it be through visiting a site of particular religious significance and/or engaging in an activity which achieves this aim. We WYD pilgrims were fortunate enough to do both. We visited a couple of churches associated with some famous saints in the Catholic tradition but our young pilgrims (mostly aged 16 – 25) were most moved by working with the poor in the slums of Lima. Some simple housing was constructed via donations prior to our visit and many of our pilgrims worked to paint and prepare these houses for families to move into them after our departure. Other pilgrims worked on refurbishing a church and some other buildings whilst many of us worked with the children of these families in a couple of schools, teaching them English and being present to them whatever they were doing. What made the biggest impression on the young pilgrims was not just the extreme poverty but the fact that the people who lived in such conditions were full of joy and happiness, were welcoming and hospitable and appreciated us spending time with them. Obviously they have their ups and downs like everyone but our pilgrims were surprised to witness the fact that the poor could experience joy in the midst of such privation. Our young WYD pilgrims went to Rio with a totally different perspective on life, faith and God’s presence in our world. A great preparation for the week of reflection and celebration in Rio! With Spring in the Air, Beware of Magpies With the change of season residents are urged to beware of magpies nesting in their midst. Cr Mark Davies said magpies nest at this time of year, changing their normal placid behaviour. “Spring is a great time to enjoy some of the fantastic outdoor recreational facilities in our City and soak up our beautiful natural environment. It’s also when birds become more active in the warmer weather so take care in green spaces such as parks, reserves or backyards,” Cr Davies said. “Spring is when nesting magpies are protective of their young and tend to swoop on people walking underneath. This can be dangerous for small children so be sure to keep an eye on them when out and about. By keeping out of wildlife’s way and leaving them be they’ll generally do the same for us,” he said. If a resident feels that a magpie is a menace they can contact the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service on 1300 361 967 or Council on 4732 7777. You can also refer to the Magpies page on the NSW Evironment and Heritage webpage: environment.nsw.gov.au/animals/ TheAustralianMagpie.htm

Soul Matters

“Have you heard God speak lately?” That might sound out of left field, but when life throws too much challenging stuff at us we want to believe that God would speak to us and help us. A way forward perhaps, wisdom, reassurance that things will be okay, love for an aching soul, healing. The Bible teaches that the profound outcome of the death and resurrection of Jesus, and faith in him, is access to God. In the Bible the followers of Jesus were marked by a “live” spiritual correspondence with God. They experienced secure souls, God’s guidance, and a life close to God because they consistently heard him speak to them in various ways, and responded to what He said. Helped by God’s Spirit they went “live” with God. Faith in Christ gives us access to God, and this means that being a Christian isn’t just about ticking off a list of beliefs on paper and doing lots of religious activities – far from it. The Bible clearly tells us that God is speaking to us by His Spirit in an on-going way, and we can (with some commitment and effort) learn to hear God’s quiet voice speaking within us. Faith in Christ opens the door to a life that is of richer quality because we become candidates for making a life for ourselves close to God. We live in this real, on-going access to God as we learn to consistently hear and respond to God’s life-giving words of love to us – a consistent flow all the time, even as you read this column. Without this “live” spiritual correspondence with God our spiritual life will be skinny and God will feel far away. According to the Bible, if our heart is open to Christ (our access to God), and if we truly want to hear from God, wait humbly, and with readiness to respond, God will find a way to get through to us. “Have you heard God speak lately?” Not so out of left field at all and good news if you need God to speak life into your soul.

Nepean Valley Day Club Opens its Doors to the Community! In August, 16 dedicated, enthusiastic and caring volunteers opened the doors to a new senior’s social club for the Penrith/ Nepean Community. At a Public Meeting hosted by the Penrith RSL sub-Branch in June, a unanimous decision was made to establish a Day Club in the Penrith/Nepean area. The Penrith RSL sub-Branch who sponsors the Day Club wanted to help reduce social isolation among older people who may be frail, or may just have trouble getting out and about. Penrith RSL sub-Branch President, Neville Barnier said the Day Club program meets the aims and objectives of the RSL in providing assistance to older members of our community, beyond the normal exservice support we give. Whilst our main focus is looking after the welfare of our own members, we believed the resources of the RSL and our sub-Branch could be put to the extra benefit of assisting older non-ex service people in our community. We have received great support from RSL NSW Headquarters and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (NSW) who provided their knowledge and training to get us up and running, Mr Barnier said. The new Day Club is a self-funded, not for profit program. Day Clubs are entirely run by volunteers with the support of the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA),

NSW Office and the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) (NSW Branch). There are 72 Day Clubs across NSW, and while their focus is veterans, they are open to everyone, not just the ex-service community. Day Clubs provide social opportunities and activities for older people who are still living at home, but who are unable to attend more active community programs. They also provide volunteers with numerous opportunities to help out, learn new skills, make friends, and make a difference to the lives of others. The new Nepean Valley Day Club will meet each Wednesday from 10am-2pm in the Salvation Army Hall at Glenmore Park. Each week the volunteers will provide participants with a varied, fun-filled program including gentle exercise, mental stimulation, leisure activities, guest speakers and entertainment, as well as morning tea and lunch - all for a nominal contribution. Transport may also be provided. If you have an interest in joining as a participant, or you wish to offer your support as a volunteer, or you just want to know more, please give us a call! We would love to have you join us! For more information, phone Jan Eaton on 4704 8506 or Noelene Simmonds on 4735 1435. r Ladies making the most of the new club • Photo courtesy: Tanya Black Photographer

THIS SPORTING LIFE Applications Now Open For Sporting Grants Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres MP is encouraging local groups to apply for NSW Government grants that could fund new sport facilities or programs that help people get active. The NSW Government is offering grants to local sporting groups and councils planning new and improved sports facilities or programs that increase participation in sport and recreation. “I know we have a lot of passionate sports people and dedicated club volunteers here in Penrith who would love funding to improve their facilities or run new programs,” Mr Ayres said. “I encourage them to make the most of this opportunity to secure a grant for their local project – whether it’s building new netball courts, installing shading at a swimming pool or running a special tournament for disadvantaged young people.” Applications for Round One of the Sport and Recreation Participation and Facility Program 2013-14 close on 30 October 2013. Grants are capped at $10,000 for participation projects and $25,000 for facility projects. Organisations may apply for multiple projects or project types, with the maximum available to any one organisation in a financial year capped at $50,000. Applicants must contribute 50% or more to the project. Examples of projects eligible for funding: Facility projects – the construction of new, fixed and portable facilities; and enhancement of existing facilities. Participation projects – deliver a program or service that will assist people to become more active. Projects that make sport and recreation facilities safer, more accessible and environmentally sustainable and programs that provide greater sporting options to seniors, people with a disability and other groups facing barriers to participation are strongly encouraged to apply. For more information and application guidelines, please visit the website at www.dsr.nsw.gov.au/grants or phone 13 13 02.

KEEPING FIT WITH Rj Weight Training for Weight Loss One of the biggest myths in the fitness world is that weight loss is solely attributed to cardiovascular exercise and that lifting weights will only make you bulky. Nothing could be further from the truth. Cardiovascular exercise will help you to shed the weight initially, but if you don’t lift weights in conjunction with cardio, as much as 50% of the weight you lose on the scales can be muscle. Although you don’t always burn as many calories during a weights session (compared to cardio) you do continue to burn calories and increase your metabolic rate for the next 24 hours after a weights session. Maintaining muscle is also vital for many health reasons including; prevention of diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease and can also assist with maintaining bone mineral density. Weight training will give you definition, strong curves and good muscle tone. Go and check out our blog today for an example of a Weight Loss program.

PARENTS’ CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Got more than one child? Chances are that a lot of your energy is spent sorting out the interactions between them. It’s a big button pusher for parents. It’s also practice for life in the big, wide world of school, work, and interpersonal relationships. Sibling rivalry is just conflict, and there are various conflict management tools that you can use… • Be a good role model. Your kids are looking at you, and they are the best imitators. If you don’t handle conflict well, your children won’t either. • Make your home an emotionally safe place to be. One of your house rules should be that the home is a “no put-down zone” or stated in more positive terms a “be kind zone”. That’s no teasing or name calling by both children and parents. • Make your home a physically safe place to be. Have firm consequences for physical violence between children. Do you smack your children? As one parent said to me years ago “I smack my children for hitting each other, it just doesn’t make any sense”. Parenting courses like Triple P provide you with the tools for positive parenting. • Focus on your children’s positive behaviours. The more you focus on their positive behaviours the more positive their behaviour will be. This is backed by forty years of research. Actually pay attention to when they are getting along well, and give them descriptive praise, for example, “I really like how nicely you are playing together, you are using nice words and being kind to each other”. I ask my boys in a curious manner, how they were able to play so well together after a great session. This gives them the opportunity to reflect on what works well in getting along. • Encourage your kids to use “I-statements”. An I-statement focuses on you owning your own feelings, for example, “when you do … I feel … And remember to use them yourself! However, sometimes the brother is making that high pitched noise because he knows it annoys his sister, and hearing that it makes her angry gives him the satisfaction he was seeking. I-statements are a good tool for being assertive and owning your own feelings but they don’t provide resolution in all situations. • When the kids are starting to get a bit scratchy with each other you can get closer to them. I call this technique “proximity and presence”. School teachers use it with disruptive students in the classroom. They get closer. • You can try some problem solving (from the Second Step programme)… “What’s the problem?” (get them to state the problem objectively with no blame attached) … “What are some solutions to the problem?”…For each solution ask… “is it safe?; how might other people feel about it?; is it fair?; will it work?”. I’ve used this technique with children from age 4 and up. • Sometimes you just have to separate kids so they can chill out for a while. Sometimes feuding kids can’t see past the overwhelm to think of other strategies, and need assistance from an adult to break the pattern of conflict. Wow! This is such a big topic. I will have to continue it next month. Basically, the more positive the home is the less conflict there will be, but there will always be some. Conflict provides the opportunity for greater understanding and that’s always a good thing. I have a heap of parenting groups coming up in Term 4, so hop on over to http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/2013/08/28/ parent-groups-term-4-2013/ to have a look to see if something interests you. There is a lot of interest in these courses at the moment and places are limited.

COUNSELLING CORNER with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All Phone 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 email lindacassell@bigpond.com *You’re in love — deeply, passionately, crazy in love. You want to move in together. You are sure you want to share the rest of your lives. You want to marry. Stop! Before you reserve the moving truck or buy the ring, take the time to discuss the issues that can make or break your relationship. Love really isn’t enough. Once the pheromones calm down, once you get over the intoxicating time of new love, how you handle these topics will decide whether you will have lasting love. It’s essential that you are on the same page, or at least in the same chapter, when it comes to your feelings or convictions about each one. Don’t assume that of course you and your true love are in agreement just because you are in love. Once the wonderful haze of new love settles into daily loving, there are the issues that can become deal breakers. Better to talk about them before making a commitment than to find yourselves astonished, angry, and saddened by huge differences that can’t be resolved. Serious discussion now can prevent a painful breakup later. Even more important, conversations about these issues can help you get to know each other better and to lay down a united and strong foundation for your relationship. Happy Romancing!!! *to read the full article go to www.psychcentral.com Linda
