New Residents Community Group The next meeting is 12th August at 7.30pm at the Floribunda Centre.

The group will focus on positive plans and events for the future as well as dealing with local issues.

Glenmore Ridge Stockland has started road consruction at its latest residential sub-division, Glenmore Ridge, which will provide up to 530 new homes in Glenmore Park. The recent ground breaking ceremony was attended

by Barry Mann, Stockland’s General Manager, David Borger Minister for Western Sydney and Minister for

Roads and PCC Mayor Crameri.

The extension to Glenmore Park will eventually have 2,000 homes.

There will be a new entrance from The Northern Road at Bradley Street, with all community facilities built in the first stage. The roads will be relatively straight and shady and provide the ability to walk to school and shops.

Thalia Penninkilampi, a local student at Penrith High School is the overall winner of the prestigious Whitlam Institute’s ‘What Matters’ essay.

She won the $250 prize in the year 9/10 category and a new laptop and software package for being overall winner. The annual competition is for students in NSW and ACT schools to have their voices heard, organised by the Whitlam Institute within the University of Western Sydney.

New Children’s Minister Ed Frost, with his wife Rebecca, has recently joined the Ministry Team at our Church as our Children’s Minister.

Ed is responsible for coordinating and overseeing all our Children’s Ministry.

At Glenmore Park Anglican Church we have always believed that ministry to children is an integral part of what we are on about so it is great to have Ed join our team.

Ed and Rebecca could be considered “locals”, with both growing up in the Blue Mountains.

Ed was a trained and experienced Primary School Teacher before he completed his Theological Study at Bible College, so he comes to us with a whole lot of skills and passion to work with the children in our local

area. Many of you may have already met Ed because each week you’ll see him teaching Scripture at the local Primary Schools of Regentville, Glenmore Park and Surveyors Creek as well as coordinating “Launch”, our Thursday afternoon, Primary School Kids Club plus our Sunday Kids Church Program! You may have also seen him at the Glenmore Park Shops each month on a Saturday morning with others from our Church, handing out animal balloons to all the kids.

Asked about his hopes and dreams for Glenmore Park, Ed said how much he is looking forward to raising his own family in Glenmore Park. (By the time you read this Ed and Rebecca will have had their first child born!) Ed is very enthusiastic about working with kids and says how much he has already “enjoyed sharing the good news of Jesus with the young people of Glenmore Park.” But for Ed it is more than just making this good contact with the kids. Ed is also very keen to make an ongoing impact on

all the families in Glenmore Park and the surrounding suburbs with the good news of Jesus!

In Memory of Mr Bruce Oliver Bruce has recently passed away after a long battle with cancer. He was a very supportive member of the Glenmore Park Action Group.

Secretary of the group, Mary Cook, says “I first met Bruce in 2005 at a Glenmore Park Residents Meeting.

Bruce stepped down as a committee member in 2007 due to illness however it didn’t stop him from writing letters to members of council, state and federal governments about important local issues. I would often find a news article and letters dropped off in my mail box.

Bruce leaves behind his loving family, his wife, Margaret Oliver their children, Ian and Rachel, and five grandchildren.

It was great to meet a strong, kind hearted man that was devoted to his family, his church and his community.

Rest In Peace Bruce.”

Opera production: Glenmore Park High School students have some great oppor-

tunities available to them. As part of the Sydney WotOpera program 20 students were able to create an original opera and be involved in all aspects of its creation, from conception through to performance. They participated in character development, plot creation, writing the libretto, composing the music, casting, painting the backdrops and performance. The process allowed students to work closely with professional performers and musicians from Opera Australia and they produced a wonderful performance at the Riverside Theatres, Parramatta.

Residents were surprised to see an army Black Hawk helicopter landing in Glenmore Park.

It actually landed in the school grounds and was part of an Army promotion. School principal Ms Brookton said “Year 7 students were given the opportunity to closely inspect the Black Hawk with the specific instructions not to touch any red buttons. Under the watchful eyes of the crew, all our students obtained a greater understanding of the Black Hawk and its crew.

GPHS would like thank the Army for the opportunity to gain an insight into the exciting life of Australia’s Armed Forces.”

Commando training:

Year 12 student Josh Matheson has been helping to prepare a group of students for the 6km commando course called the Tough Bloke Challenge which is on 3rd July in Appin.

It is part of the gym program which has been running for 12 months to encourage young students to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. In the past few weeks small groups from the program have ventured into the Blue Mountains to take on the notorious Knapsack Stairs and other challenging tracks in preparation.

The students get to school early 2 mornings a week for an hours training.

Paid Parental Leave Becomes a Reality Legislation was passed on the 17 June in the Federal Parliament which will establish Australia’s first Paid Parental Leave scheme.

The Paid Parental Leave scheme will provide eligible working parents with financial support so they can spend those important early months with their newborn baby, giving babies the best start in life. From 1 January 2011, eligible parents will receive 18 weeks Parental Leave paid at the Federal minimum wage, currently $570 a week.

Parents can nominate when they wish to receive their pay. The Parental Leave pay must be taken in one continuous 18 week period. The start date can be on or after the child’s date of birth, (but not before) and all the pay must be received within the first 12 months after the date of birth.

People will be able to lodge claims for Paid Parental Leave with the Family Assistance Office from 1 October this year. Once the scheme is fully implemented, Parental Leave pay will be provided by employers to their long-term employees. A long-term employee is a person who has been an employee of the employer for 12 months or more prior to the expected date of birth of the child.

The scheme is based on the expert recommendations of the Productivity Commission and payments can be received in addition to existing employer-funded entitlements, helping local employers enhance the family-friendly workplace conditions they already offer.

Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital Camille Brandt BVSc (Hons I), MVS (SAP) We had a busy month for puppy preschool, and Jill the puppy trainer had to run two classes a week.

Congratulations to all of the puppies that graduated in June including: Elmo, Millie, Jabs, Marlow, Chloe, Oscar, Dixie, Duke, Tora and Pony.

My new puppy ‘Pony’ attended puppy preschool and this is what he thought of the classes: ‘Woof!

I had so much Pony fun playing with all of the puppies. I made lots of new friends, in particular my best friend ‘Oscar’. ‘Oscar’ is an Australian Bulldog and he was just my size for a good rumble!

I enjoyed my off leash times when I was running and chasing everyone around the room. And I also enjoyed the training tips that my mum learnt so that I will be a good boy. I know now how to sit, stay, down and roll over. I loved getting a treat for every trick I did. I learnt so many things about dog

behaviour, like when ‘no’ means ‘no’, and when another dog does not want to play as rough as me. At my graduation class, I dressed up with a saddle that my mum had made by Fluffy and Knuckles. I need to live up to my name, so I dressed up as a Pony.

The other puppies learnt some really cool tricks as well. ‘Dixie’ and ‘Chloe’ both learnt how to jump through a hoop and I was so impressed. I called ‘Dixie’s’ hoop “The Ring Of Fire” because it had streamers hanging from it.

The dress up class was so fun!

‘Jabs’ were a pink graduation hat and gown, ‘Oscar’ wore fairy wings and a tiara which I thought Jabs looked so funny. I liked the pink furry tiara that ‘Chloe’ wore, and I just wanted to chew it, which I did several times! Millie wore a hula skirt and a lei. And Marlow wore a Millie Superdog outfit.

Many of you have probably already met my puppy ‘Pony’ at the hospital, as he comes to work with me every day and hangs out with Bella. Thank you for everyone’s input as to what breed he is. I am so curious now that I have performed a DNA test on him.

For those of you that watch CSI, I took a swab of his cheek, sealed it in an evidence bag and sent it away for analysis.BITSA (Breed Identification Through Scientific Analysis) is a leading-edge breed identification test that uses enhanced DNA analysis to provide an accurate history of your dog’s breed. It works by applying the latest DNA science to analyse hundreds of snippets of your dog’s DNA where dog breed information is found. These snippets are then cross referenced against an extensive genetic database to provide a breed signature – or a series of breed signatures. In Pony’s case, he will most likely be a mix of a few breeds. Watch this space for Pony’s DNA test results.

Orchid Winter Show

The official construction commencement ceremony on Wednesday June 16, used a bulldozer with a chrome blade to break ground on site instead of the traditional ‘golden shovel’.

Blue Mountains and Penrith District Orchid Society will be holding their Winter Show on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th July 2010 at the Guide Hall, cnr Gt Western Hwy & Nepean St, Emu Plains.

Turning the first sod for Glenmore Ridge

Barry Mann, Stockland’s General Manager of Residential Development in NSW, said the event to begin works signalled an exciting new stage of development in a wellestablished and popular community.

“Glenmore Ridge is a natural extension to the very successful and vibrant Glenmore Park community,” said Mr Mann. “Demand for property in this area remains strong and we look forward to bringing a selection of good quality, well-priced home sites to the market.” He also said that the ‘dead worm’ road design with ‘no through roads’ and limited access was no longer appropriate and there would be a much simpler road system.

The first home sites will be released in Ridgetop Drive by the end of the year. Jacaranda Park is going to be doubled in size and upgraded and all the new community facilities will be built in this first stage.
