Colours of the cross The new Bell Tower in Padre Pio Church is now operational and a spiral staircase leading to the service platform has finally been installed.

The cross at the top of is now illuminated and from time to time it changes colour. You might be wondering if there is any significance to the colour and of course there is. The colours will alternate between red, white, green, purple and blue. Each of these colours have a liturgical significance within the Catholic faith. Find out what they mean at Kev’s Korner inside.

The difference Jesus makes...

Over the last few months you might’ve noticed much construction activity taking place at our Church. The reason for this is simple. The con-

struction of our current Church building was completed in April 1997. In the time since then we have been so blessed to go from one service on Sunday morning with around 80 adults and children to now having 4 services throughout Sunday with around 600 adults adult and children! This means that there are now simply no time slots left on Sunday for any more Church Services! But not only this, we have also run out

of room for many of midweek activities; for mums, women, kids and youth groups as well as many of the other activities we love to be able to do at our Church.

The good news about Jesus is such good news and we want to be able to share it with everyone in Glenmore Park so we are extending with a larger auditorium for Services, a much larger creche, larger meeting rooms for kids, youth, men and women as well as extending our car park.

Construction is on target to finish before the end of the year and we are looking forward to the greater opportunities that this extension will provide. But you don’t have to wait until the end of the year to hear more of the good news in Jesus, as we’d love to have you join us now on Sundays & throughout the week! Designed for new and expectant parents, these comprehensive workshop-style sessions aim to expand upon the knowledge gained at antenatal classes, covering the basic information you will need to successfully breastfeed your new baby.

The sessions are conducted by qualified Australian Breastfeeding Association counsellors and community educators.

Tanya Davies MP Sworn in Newly elected Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies MP was Sworn into parliament on Tuesday as the 3rd Member for Mulgoa, and the only Liberal MP to ever represent the Mulgoa electorate.

“I am honored and privileged to be elected by the people of Mulgoa to serve them as their State Member of Parliament”.

“It was an historical moment when I signed the Legislative Assembly role and formed the 55th Parliament of NSW. Together with a strong, talented and unified team under Premier Barry O’Farrell I will work to achieve positive change for the people and families of Mulgoa”.

“This is an exciting time for NSW and I will be working closely with all the Western Sydney MPs to ensure that this region is not forgotten like it has been in the past”.

Tanya said that her most urgent priorities were: • 50 additional beds and 25

more nurses for our local health district to help cut waiting times at Nepean Hospital, and fast track the $10 million promise to expand the car park at Nepean Hospital.

• Deliver more express train services to Parramatta and the City and work for better coordination between trains and buses so that peo-

ple can spend less time travelling and more time with their families.

• $500,000 to improve access to the M4 at Roper Road/ Carlisle Avenue intersection at Colyton.

• We’ll also investigate a solution to traffic access issues at Glenmore Park.

• $10 million towards the construction of the Werrington Arterial, which will link the M2 and M4, taking traffic off our local roads. We’ll also refer the M4 East Extension to Infrastructure NSW for urgent assessment.

• Stop the graffiti cycle by increasing penalties.

• I’ll also keep up the fight for more police for our area including a police presence in St Clair.

Kalinda Jade Studios is owned and run by Kalinda McDonald with help of Bryan Ramsa, the guitar and bass expert. They teach a variety of instruments and subjects for beginner, intermediate and advanced students and specialise in School Certificate, Higher School Certificate and University tuition. Kev’s Korner Kevin Lee, Padre Pio Parish A church’s bell-ringer passed away. So they posted the position and a man came in with no arms wanting the job. The clergy weren’t sure he could do it, but he convinced them to let him try it. They climbed the bell tower and the guy ran toward the bell and hit it with his head. They gave him the job. The next day he went to ring the bell, tripped, bounced off the bell and fell to the sidewalk below. Two guys were walking past. One asked, “Do you know this guy?” The second guy responded, “No, but his face rings a bell.”

The next day, the dead bell-ringer’s twin brother comes in for the again vacant bell-ringer position. He also has no arms. They lead him up to the bell tower, he runs at the bell, trips and falls to the sidewalk below. The same two guys walk by. The first asks, “Do you know him?” The second guy responds, “No, but he’s a dead ringer for the guy we saw yesterday.”

The colours will alternate between red, white, green, purple and blue.

Each of these colours have a liturgical significance within the Catholic faith and variously communicate that we are in a penitential season (purple for Lent & Advent), celebrating a feast (such as Easter or Christmas), honoring a saint or martyr (red) or remembering a feast of Mary (blue). I hope that this will be a conversation topic in the local community as it currently is without a top.. the tower is being described as the “Stairway to Heaven”.

The 3 bells atop the tower will ring for weddings, funerals and at 12 noon for the Angelus prayer. The word Angelus comes from the opening words of an ancient Latin prayer “Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae”(which means the Angel of the Lord announced to Mary) indicating the traditional hour that the Angel Gabriel came to Mary to offer her the Divine Motherhood of Jesus.

We Catholics solemnly recall this moment as pivotal to our salvation. If Mary had refused the Angel’s invita-

tion then Jesus would not have been born. In a similar way we revere the decision that each mother has made in accepting the child that they have conceived. For Catholics, motherhood is a divine calling and we need to always remember how lucky we are that our mothers have given us the gift of life. www.padrepio.org.au

At only 14 years of age, Jason Post has tragically died in a motorbike accident.

Jason was a year 9 student at Glenmore Park High School.

Principal Ms Brookton said ‘Jason was a fine young man and a credit to himself, his family and the school.’

Jason was a popular young man, who loved life, enjoying active sports.

He joined the Australian Airforce Cadets earlier this year and had dreams of flying a jet plane. He is sadly missed by all his family and friends.

Mulgoa Valley Landcare Group The Mulgoa Valley Landcare Group has been involved in conservation in the Mulgoa area for 16 years.

In that time we have been working to restore the critically endangered vegetation communities along Mulgoa Creek in an effort to improve biodiversity and habitat conditions for the native wildlife. Our corridor links important areas of remnant vegetation on private property through Mulgoa thereby improving the migratiory, foraging and habitat opportunities for our vanishing wildlife.

Our group meets on the first Saturday of each month from 9am until midday at various locations along Mulgoa Creek. We produce a monthly Newsletter which details the venue for our next activity day. Our sites include both public and private land. We predominantly control invasive weeds which outcompete native plants and destroy the delicate ecosystems of our native vegetation communities. We always need extra voluntees and provide all that is needed to get involved with our bush regeneration work (including gloves, tools and herbicide).

Our project has been well assisted by government grants and corporate sponsorship over the past 15 years.

Currently we are administering a grant of $90,000 over a 3 year period funded by the State Government’s “Enviornmental Trust”. This funding provides the assistance of professional bush regeneration teams to help us the with the more complex and overwhelming weed issues we encounter along Mulgoa Creek.

Recently, St Dominic’s College raised $2000 to assist our project.This funding will be used to involve a new property in our conservation project (adjacent Cox’s Cottage) and we are very grateful for their support. Penrith City Council will be making a $5000 contribution at Gow Park (sporting fields located on Mulgoa Creek) over the next couple of months. Penrith Waste Depot has also pledged $3000 over the next 3 years to address weed impacts at the entrance of the Waste facility on Mulgoa Road. Three other private properties are making cash

contributions toward conservation on their properties in conjunction with the Environmental Trust project.

Our project area is vast (7Km of creek corridor) and the weed issues are often overwhelming, so we are very appreciative of the funding support that we receive. We also encouarge volunteers who might be undertaking a certificate requiring completion of ‘community service hours’ such a Duke of Edinburgh or scouts.

We have hosted corporate events (AMEX , British American Tobacco and Westpac) to encourage corporate involvement in Conservation in Western Sydney.

We are currently working with year 8 students of Nepean Christian School who are undertaking a project to create a walking trail along their section of Mulgoa Creek. Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens.

Each kitten has a health check by Camille and they are quarantined for a week to ensure they do not have any signs of cat flu. They are then vaccinated, desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which covers fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm.

All 3 kittens have had their 3 kitten vaccinations, are desexed and microchipped. They have been raised here from a young age at the veterinary hospital and are very dog friendly. If you can tolerate Pony, you can tolerate any dog!
