McCarthy Catholic College and Sydney Bass Fishing Club have teamed up to restore the native state of about a hectare of land along the Nepean River, in a joint project to educate young people about land care issues.

In February, Federal Member for Lindsay, David Bradbury, met with the students and fishing club members who have already clocked up more than 300 hours removing weedy vegetation, which had been choking out native plants, as well as collecting native plant seeds for replanting.

Mr Bradbury said it was great to see local residents and students giving up their time to conserve the local environment.

“The Nepean River is an icon of our community and it is so important that we protect its natural integrity.”

The project received a $6,420 Community Action Grant, under the government’s Caring for our Country initiative. The next round funding applications for Community Action Grants are open until the 27th of March. For more information about the grants, phone 1800 552 008 or visit www.nrm.gov.au.

Geoff speaks first. “So you guys, you know Easter is coming up...the wife & kids are keen to get away for a few days so we thought we might battle the traffic & head up north...take bit of a break...recharge the batteries.”

What about you? What are you planning to do?”

Debbie quickly replies, “I’m not going anywhere! The last few months have been huge! I’m spending the weekend sleeping...watch a few movies...just take it really easy.”

Bill is slower to answer. He says, “You know, our family is going to do something different this Easter – we thought we might all go to church.”

Geoff & Debbie look surprised but Bill continues, “I’ve been thinking about it...I reckon Easter is a pretty special time of year. Some of my friends in the footy team have been talking about this Jesus who died to

Book Review Local author, Chrissy Siggee, has published several books including her teen novel ‘Out of the Shadows – Jenna’s Secret’.

As the Gazette editor I have just enjoyed reading the book and it was a fascinating insight into a teenage girl dealing with an eating disorder who manages to overcome her anxieties.

Chrissy has an easy to read style with a real empathy with Jenna.

Chrissy rediscovered her childhood love of writing in her late 40s when she spent many months house-

Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time

We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate...lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal.

If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important

that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian.

The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body.

Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal.

There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter: • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet.

• Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate.

• Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags!

• Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around.
