Mulgoa Rise Development Penrith Councul has approved the concept plan for 477 new homes in the new stage 2 area, called Mulgoa Rise, off Bradley Street. The developer is Norwest Land who have developed the Norwest Business Park and the Bella Vista Waters estate at Baulkham Hills.

Bradley Road runs off The Northern Road, over a bridge, and will be the main entrance into Stage 2. A new shopping centre, primary school and parks are in the plans.

20th year for McHappy Day Since 1981, Australia’s Ronald McDonald Houses have provided more than 60,000 families in need with low cost accommodation while their child has undergone treatment for serious illness at a nearby hospital.

The Houses currently provide accommodation for up to 250 families every night but sadly, every year there are some families the Houses are unable to accommodate due to a shortage of facilities.

Funds raised on McHappy Day will help support, in part, much needed House expansion plans to ensure there are more beds available.

“Last year we announced that some of the existing Houses would receive much needed expansions and that two new Houses would be constructed,” said Malcolm Coutts, CEO, Ronald McDonald House Charities. McHappy Day will once again be supported by a host of Australia’s favourite celebrities in restaurant. Simply by dropping

Spring Garden news:

Its that time of year again – plants, shrubs, natives, roses bursting into colour. Veggie patches are racing forth with growth. Now is the time for that second planting of tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers etc. With the wetter start to spring it is not too late to fertilise and weed the lawn. Don’t forget to fertilise all garden beds.

All pests are beginning to become active so prevention is better than cure. Regular spraying of eco oil will keep a lot of the pests away. Plants

that require regular spraying are citrus, fruit trees, veggies and roses.

With the hotter weather fast approaching make sure that any new plants are planted into good soil with the appropriate drainage for the plant type. Water in with Seasol and use this product regularly with new plants.

Mulching is a must for keeping your plants hydrated. Never mulch up to the trunk of plants as this can cause other problems. Adding a wetting agent to water when watering or into the soil prior to planting will help hold in the moisture along with the mulch.

David’s Hidden Talent David Debello has been drawing since he was around twelve years old. He has always kept drawing in his spare time and tried studying Commercial Art, which was too competitive. David says. “I abandoned the idea after I tried to enroll in a private Graphic Design school but my parents couldn't afford the fees. I ended up working in the health sector as a registered nurse with a career in Operating Theatres and currently still doing so”.

David is now doing a Freelance Cartooning correspondence course with Cengage on-line and has been very seriously concentrating on his hidden talent once again.

He says “I plan to continue with this and aim to build a business as a cartoonist which I enjoy tremendously and at the same time drawing to help others build their businesses with my cartoons.”

Glenmore Park Star Performers Talented sisters Aimee and Rachel Thurlow recently sang at the Sydney Opera House open day.

The Glenmore Park girls were very excited about performing solos, duets and musical theatre.

Aimee (16) is a student at Newtown High School of Performing Arts and a former student of Caroline Chisholm. She has been performed since the age of 10 in various theatre productions. Rachel (12) attends Bethany Catholic Primary School and is a member of the Elite Dance Show Troupe at Penrith’s Studio 11 dance school. Her dance troupe recently took first price in the National Showcase Titles at Jupiter’s Casino on the Gold Coast. Both girls take singing lessons with voice coach Deborah Wells from Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

Another local performer is Angus Findlay age 12. Angus also sang at the Sydney Opera House open day on 24 October and will perform there next year as part of the Opera Australia boy’s choir for its Sydney production of Carmen.

Angus is also using his musical talents to raise money for the Salvation Army with a single he co-wrote “Forever Midnight” to raise awareness about homelessness.

The single is available at the Penrith School of Guitar and will soon be available to download from iTunes. All proceeds will go to the Salvation Army.

National Nurse’s Day On Friday 15th October 2010 we celebrated National Nurse’s Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. It was a great day to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of our nurses. They do a lot of work behind the scenes that you do not see or hear about. They monitor the patients under general anaesthetic, operate the in house laboratory equipment, medicate animals in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure smooth running. Without the veterinary nurses, I would not be able to do my job as a veterinarian.

We celebrated by having a long lunch. We had a really busy morning and a busy afternoon scheduled, and

we were so fortunate that during our lunch break the phones were quiet and we could enjoy our feast! Pony and Bella were given a pigs ear to chew on. As soon as we finished lunch it was back to phones ringing, dogs barking and consultations arriving.

We have 4 nurses at the hospital, and I hope you get to know them as you come and visit our hospital.

Justine: I have been a veterinary nurse for 15 years now! I have been at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital now for nearly 2 years working full time. I love my job and the people I work with, also the great clients and of course their pets. Working in a vet hospital is very hard not to have animals of my own. I have 2 cavoodles (Cavalier King Charles x poodles),

named Summer and Ollie. I also have 3 Mini Lop rabbits that I intend to breed with. I also have my own pet grooming business that I run from my home in Glenmore Park. I also keep very busy with my 2 children, Montana (13 years) and Logan (10 years). They also have a love of animals and constantly ask me to bring home a kitten from the kitten adoption program.

Belinda: I started out my career in Veterinary Nursing in 2004 and graduated in 2006. Veterinary Nursing has always been my 'dream job' and I love every minute of it. Out of work I love spending time with family and friends, I love swimming and going out in my boyfriends boat, going to the movies and working out at the gym or doing zumba.

I have also volunteered at Taronga Zoo working in the carnivore unit. I am a member of WIRES and look after injured wildlife. In my spare time I go horse riding or do gardening. I have just celebrated my 21st birthday. I aim to complete certificate IV in vet nursing in the next 2 years.

Your Family Questions Answered I am unhappy with my weight, I am an emotional eater. I have tried everything to lose the weight and nothing works. Is it psychological?

It is important that you have a medical assessment to assess the possibility of a medical reason. Thyroid problems are strongly associated with weight issues. Monitor your eating habits by keeping a diary of everything you eat and the situations that lead to the eating (we call these triggers, e.g. is it right after an argument? Is it when you are bored?). This diary will show a pattern of behaviour. You need to know why it is happening before we can do anything to change it. Is it a way to cope with stress perhaps?

Or is it to make you feel better? It may be pure lack of discipline in your habits. Either way we need alternative coping mechanisms that will work better for you. Exercise is also very important, not just for a healthy body but also a healthy mind. A dietician and a psychologist may offer you the support and the answers you need. Be mindful that prolonged feelings of helplessness (e.g. over your weight) increase your chances of developing depressive type symptoms.

I worry about everything and anything, health, being late, work, friends. How do I stop?

Worrying is a natural response to a given stressor. In life it is through worrying that we have been able to prepare for difficult situations. If houses in your street have been broken into, you worry and decide to get an alarm.

However it is when you worry about things that usually will not occur (e.g. she’s late...what if she’s had an accident?) and when the worrying starts to impact on everyday life (becoming teary, excessive worrying impacts on concentration) then we have a problem. The mind is very powerful

and you need to learn to control it. Ask yourself....how realistic is my worry? Statistically what is the likelihood that it will happen? Is it really that bad? This is a lot easier said than done. If you are a worrier, you probably have been for a long time and may need some assistance. Do not let anxiety rule your life. Watch out for avoidance......if you have stopped doing things for the fear of fear, anxiety has taken over.

My teenage daughter spends too much time on Facebook. She closes it when I am around. I don’t know if it’s a good idea.

It is important to consider the age of your daughter.

Facebook has an age restriction of 16 years old. If your daughter is younger than 16, she should not have an account. The reason why Facebook has imposed this rule is due to safety. All interactions between teenagers should be controlled and monitored, despite the teen’s arguments which may be along the lines of “violation of privacy”. It is not a violation of privacy, it is a safety precaution. If your child is under 16 with a Facebook account all parents should: · Have access to the account including the password · Limit the time spent on Facebook · Monitor the ‘friends’ on Facebook · Have the computer in a visible place (no access in the bedroom or from an I-pod) · Network and communicate frequently with the mothers from your teen’s ‘friends’ about what is discussed in Facebook accounts.

Padro Pio Parish Tony Elias recently sent me the following text message: "Knock! Knock!"

"Who's there?"

"Owen.."

"Owen who?"

"O when the Saints come marching in..!"

But he was not referring to his beloved St George team that had ended their 31 year Premiership drought (beating my beloved Roosters!) but he was reminding me of Saint Mary of the Cross Mackillop who was being canonised that day. It was a great day for Australia when the Pope declared Mary Mackillop our first official Australian saint. But as I told the kids in our school, she is not really our first saint. There are surely many thousands (maybe even millions) of other Australians who are in Heaven with God and therefore technically "saints"! I think my grandparents must be saints. They worked very hard for the poor in their area and were generous and giving people who never thought of themself. They would certainly qualify as saints. And I talk to them and ask them for help when it seems that God has not been

responding.

Many people wonder why we pray to saints. Some people are even angry that Catholics talk to saints and make statues of them. But these people loved God so much that they made sacrifices to show others the way to know God better. When people do protest, "I don't pray to saints!

I talk only to Jesus. I don't need anyone else as my go-between. After all, the Bible says "For there is one God and one intermediary between God and humanity, Christ Jesus, himself human" (1 Timothy 2:5) I point out their erroneous interpretation.

They stop the quote mid-sentence and miss the point,"..Who gave himself as a ransom for all, revealing God's purpose at his appointed time." (verse 6) St Paul is saying in the earlier verses "First of all, then, I urge that requests, prayers, intercessions, and thanks be offered on behalf of all people, even for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life in all godliness and dignity." and then he reminds us that we have One who has done this and that. Not that He is the ONLY ONE who can intercede for us.

We believe that saints, as fellow

travellers who loved us in life, continue to love us and want to help us in death. They are with God in Heaven and therefore in the best position to talk to God on our behalf. Catholics interpret St Paul's letter to Timothy in a different light from those who insist it is a definitive condemnation of praying to the dead. Why would God limit His availability to only Jesus?

Surely all those who died in godliness will be praying on our behalf for our safe arrival at our eternal destination.

It is a great thing for Australia that we have one of our own acknowledged by the highest church authority for having lived a good life and given us an example of holiness to aspire to.
