Llandilo Rural Fire Service Receives Community Grant “Our Prepare Act Survive Pop Up Classroom will enable us to promote bushfire and fire safety and stress the importance of being prepared not only for our immediate local community but for the wider community at large. Our message is clear planning to make a plan is not a plan,” said Christopher Ellul from NSW Rural Fire Service – Llandilo. NRMA Insurance spokesperson, Jennifer Cobley said the Community Grants program is about encouraging local organisations to help make their community safer, stronger and more confident. “We have had a fantastic response this year from community groups who have some outstanding ideas on ways to help their local communities. We are excited to see how the Community Grant will support their project and the local community,” said Ms Cobley. Ms Prue Car MP, Member for Londonderry welcomed the announcement. “Congratulations to NSW Rural Fire Service – Llandilo on receiving a Community Grant and for their dedication to helping our community. “NSW Rural Fire Service – Llandilo is already doing wonderful work and this funding will see them make an even greater impact in the Llandilo area,” said Ms Car.

New Display Village Opening a Huge Success! The new Jordan Springs Display Village Opening at Koorala Gardens last month proved to be a great day for the local community, with hundreds of people turning out to show their support for this exciting project. The aim of the event was to showcase to the people of Jordan Springs the recently completed Display Village, comprising of 22 new display homes from some of the state’s best builders. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the day was the appearance of Adam and Lisa, Season 2 Winners of House Rules, who were on hand to meet and greet the adoring crowd. There were also free homeware consultations from Shirley Gavin, a sausage sizzle, face painting, jumping castle and giveaways from the NOVA Casanovas. Both Adam and Lisa were proud to be a part of the launch and celebrations, “We were blown away by these display homes. The quality is very high and they look amazingâ€? said Adam. “I absolutely love the area. There’s so much beauty everywhere you go. The local people are very warm and welcomingâ€? said Lisa. A big thank you to the team at Lend Lease for all their hard work in putting together a fantastic and successful day for the people and community of Jordan Springs. ď ˛ Image: Season 2 Winners of House Rules Adam and Lisa.

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the third Sunday and 8am on the fourth Sunday
When certain periods of history are considered they always provide considerations particularly in terms of how their legacy exists in the world today. Take for example the French Revolution which changed the life of Europeans in very dramatic circumstance. It culminated in the Battle of Waterloo, which in turn engendered movements that still have influence in European culture and society. The French Revolution which gradually emerged and came to the fore after the capture of the Bastille in Paris, has its classic summary in liberty, equality and fraternity. Now to what extent is was understood by society at the time, it is certain that in our time, liberty has come to mean the freedom to do what I like and possess what I can pay for; equality seen as each person has the right to vote in parliamentary elections [one man one vote which has often been defined as the plenary inspiration of the odd man]; fraternity which is often expressed in racial and religious ‘superiority’. For the Christian, freedom is better understood as the ability to constrain from depreciating the good in life. In Christ, we have the perfect freedom to be and to give to society the realization that freedom requires giving not to gain for oneself, but rather to create a society which can be at peace with itself. What a challenge! Equality does not allow us to say that there is no such thing as race, or class or sex. This is what makes the world and life itself a wonderful mystery, which all study is directed to a deeper understanding. It requires of us to recognize that each and every one of us are but a part of the total whole, and to the ‘whole’ the individual has responsibility. Fraternity is in many situations today a forgotten concept yet it is forgotten at a cost. Corruptions in the body politic, life style
that breaks down health and joy, wastage and destruction of the environment all present a challenge. So it is the call to repent ‘think anew’ and the example of the life and work of Jesus the Christ lead us to reflect and to enter into the perfect freedom to ‘be’. Sadly, in many respects, followers of Christ set bad example rather than recreating the mystery of life with its riches to the full. Yet the Christian hope is simply that the end will be the coming of God’s kingdom. The call to repent (think anew), remains a constant until such time as liberty equality and fraternity reigns supreme in this wonderful universe in which we find ourselves.

7000 Little and BIG Dashers Take On New Obstacle Adventure A sell-out crowd of 7000 little and BIG Dashers went wild over three kilometres in an obstacle adventure full of colour, fun and laughter in the Little BIG DASH at Sydney International Regatta Centre last month. Parent and child teams crawled, tumbled, dodged and rumbled through ten colourful obstacle stages in the spirit of enjoying activity together. Little BIG DASH Ambassador and Australian Cricket Legend Brett Lee took on the course and admitted that “we couldn’t stop laughing together.” “I felt like a big kid all over again,” said Lee. “My team forgot that we were exercising because it was so much fun.” “The highlight for me would be watching the participants faces as families took on challenges together and lived in the moment with each other. It was a really rewarding experience,” said Lee. From the makers of the renowned Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon, Little BIG DASH is designed to bring so much enjoyment for a parent and child that the exercise sharing is incidental. It is about living in the moment and releasing that inner-child while having heaps of fun helping each other through each stage. The event is created to be completed in family teams with the children aged between 5 and 15 years old. At the finale ‘Dashers’ collected their official Little BIG DASH shirts and stamped their hand prints on each other, creating a unique memento of their adventure. The Little BIG DASH is proudly supported by Weet-Bix, Panthers, Sydney CHILD and HopeFM. Image Supplied
JORDAN SPRINGS WATER SAFETY Article by: Nepean Aquatic Centre A: 16 – 19 Lambridge Place, Penrith P: 4730 8900 W: nepeanaquaticcentre.com.au As we head towards Spring, one of the best things a parent can do to keep their child safer around water is to make sure they start Learn To Swim classes as soon as possible. But how early should a child start swimming lessons? Swim Australia recommends starting lessons from 6 months, but you can practise early water familiarisation before starting swimming. Make sure baby has regular baths and showers, and becomes accustomed to and comfortable with the sensation of water being trickled and then poured over their head. Babies are not born with a fear of the water, instead this fear is acquired as the child grows, so a 6 month old will accept the water more readily than an older child. In addition to safety, there are strong benefits to introducing babies to the water early, including the development of gross motor skills, and improved strength, coordination and balance, as baby is supported by the water and less restricted by gravity. Warm water combined with gentle exercise relaxes and stimulates baby’s appetites, with many parents reporting that their babies usually eat and sleep better after swimming. Additionally, the uninterrupted quality time whilst swimming facilitates an even deeper bond between parent and child.

Enjoy your ULTIMATE ADVENTURE DAY!
Some people retire with plans to go fishing, play golf and enjoy long days of leisure. And then there are people like Nancy Messina, who barely six months into her retirement has launched a new business, opening Richardson & Wrench Jordan Springs/Werrington County. In fact the only part of her retirement that is running true to tradition is that Nancy will spend more time with family; her daughter Nina will be joining her in the new agency. For Nancy, the chance to open her own real estate agency and work alongside her daughter is a lifetime ambition and the culmination of two decades in which she has been selling house and land in new developments across Western Sydney. Over the years she has worked for some of Australia’s biggest development companies such as Clarendon Homes, Mirvac and Lend Lease. Her last assignment was here at Jordan Springs when it launched four years ago and then left for her shortlived retirement at the end of last year. Nancy has a clear vision of the real estate agency she intends to build and it’s based on the 20 years she spent helping hundreds of people establish their dream home. She sees herself being equal part buyers agent, sales agent, advocate and adviser putting all her years of experience liaising with builders, developers and trades at the disposal of her clients. Navigating home designs and finance can be difficult for the young and not so young and Nancy sees herself bridging the gap to ensure a good sale on the one hand and a wise purchase on the other.

PARENTS CORNER
Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services P: 0409 986121 or 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting In Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com Last month, I listed the services available to parents who are interested in learning more about parenting. This month I said I would write about what to do if you are concerned that your child may have a disability or disorder. The main difficulties that I see in children in the work that I do are autism, anxiety, ADHD, and sensory processing disorder. The national statistics on these conditions are: Autism – 1 in 100 children Anxiety – 1 in 10 children ADHD – 1 in 10 children Sensory processing disorder – 1 in 20 children Of course, there are a lot of other disorders and syndromes that can affect children’s thinking, feeling, and doing. Frequently, parents are concerned about getting their child assessed for fear of their child being labelled. It is my experience that children like to know the reason why they are different to other children, it makes sense to them. A diagnosis also helps teachers to accommodate your child’s unique needs and abilities. And more importantly, the earlier the diagnosis the earlier you can start intervention, and early intervention makes a huge difference in the lives of children. You can discuss your concerns about your child’s development with your General Practitioner (doctor). Your GP may refer you to a paediatrician or you may ask for a Mental Health Care Plan which will allow you to claim a Medicare rebate on the fees to see a psychologist or occupational therapist for an assessment. Psychologists and paediatricians can assess for autism and ADHD. Psychologists can assess for anxiety. Occupational Therapists can assess for sensory processing disorder. It is very important to get an assessment by a professional and not to diagnose your child yourself or listen to other people who are not qualified to give you advice. Once you have a diagnosis, there are services which provide support for parents depending on the different ability your child has. For example, the Luke Priddis Foundation, ASPECT, Northcott, Lifestart, Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services, and Stepping Stones Triple P. Parents find that connecting with other parents who understand their child’s challenges, offer a listening ear and helpful suggestions, is very supportive and a good form of self-care. These services may also offer activities for the children or the family as a whole.

Aaron Blabey Comes to St Joseph’s Primary School
Author, Aaron Blabey
Students and teachers at St Joseph’s Primary School in Kingswood were treated to a very special visit from Aaron Blabey, Australian Children’s Book Author and Illustrator, last month. With books such as Pig The Pug, The Brothers Quibble, The Dreadful Fluff and Thelma The Unicorn, Aaron delighted
the audience to an interactive show that included storytelling, illustrating and answering questions. Teachers dressed up as characters from Aaron’s books and Year 6 students performed a play. “The students at our school love reading his books. Aaron’s stories are fantastic and they encourage reading amongst the kids” said Liz Nicholls, Assistant Principal. “I’ve done over 200 school visits and this has definitely been a highlight. I’ve got the best job ever” beamed Aaron. With 13 Children’s Books published and another 14 to come within the next 2 years, it’s easy to see why he’s won multiple awards and is a king amongst the kids. Aaron also gave the audience a sneak peak of some of his upcoming books, which were brought with loud cheers and applause by the students. “Growing up, reading books was an important part of my life. I’m thrilled that children of today still have the same excitement as I did when I was their age reading a book” parted Aaron. The day was a huge success for both the students and teachers and proves that books are an important part of life.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT... HENRY FULTON PUBLIC SCHOOL? Henry Fulton Public School enjoys its strong ties with our families and community. This was very evident last month when the Henry Fulton P&C held their annual Bunnings BBQ. The day was a huge success. A special thank you to our community whose generosity in donating items and helping out on the day meant that the P&C didn’t need to purchase anything for the day. Our annual Athletics Carnival was held on a very cool day in late July at Richmond, but we all had a wonderful time and a few records were broken. Many of our athletes represented our school at the District Athletics Carnival held on the 19th and 20th August. Over the past two weeks our four dance groups and our choir have been performing at the Cranebrook Learning Community Performing Arts Festival held at Cranebook High School and also at the Joan Sutherland Centre as part of the Nepean Blue Mountains Dance Festival. Our Pulse choir also performed at the Opera House last month. Our Soccer teams competed in the Penrith Cup on the 7th August and played very well. Our annual Walkathon was held in late August. Our Walkathons have always been hugely successful and raise important funds to buy learning resources for our students. Selling your property for a great price
doesn’t just happen by chance, you have to ensure you are employing the right strategy, otherwise you risk the chance of leaving a bunch of your hard earned cash on the table. Our philosophy is that a record price today, becomes a normal price tomorrow.
ALL YOUR LOCAL & national REAL ESTATE NEWS delivered TO YOU!! Keep up to date on our page : facebook.com/pcpenrith This year Property Central Penrith celebrates
TEN YEARS
since we opened our real estate showroom (originally opened as RE/MAX) Since then we have sold about 1 billion dollars worth of property and in 2014 we have sold more than 160 properties in the Greater Penrith Region. A record number for our locally owned brand.
,Q WKH SDVW UHDO HVWDWH RIÚFHV were judged by their window display. Buyers no longer drive from real estate office to RIÚFH WR VHDUFK IRU SURSHUWLHV LQ windows >>>
Buyers now predominantly search for real estate online.
RP DATA REPORTS THAT THE MEDIAN HOUSE PRICE IN THE GREATER PENRITH REGION has risen by 15%-19% over the past 12 months... we predict EVEN FURTHER CAPITAL GROWTH INTO THE NEAR FUTURE.
Recent Sales Success in Jordan Springs! 11 Nelson St Jordan Springs SOLD $585,000
Thinking of selling RIGHT NOW? Did you
know that www.realestate. com.au (Australia’s largest real estate website) has increased page views from mid Aug to late Dec? Therefore, it makes sense to have your property listed for sale over this period. More views = more buyers = a higher price for your home. This may be an alternate mindset to what you were thinking, but if you want a great price then this could be the strategy that helps you achieve that goal.
Without giving away too many secrets to our competitors, one thing I can talk about is “ Buyers Crossover”. This simple tactic has resulted in us achieving dozens of record prices this year. If you can grant us just PLQXWHV RI \RXU WLPH ZHoOO EH DEOH WR VKRZ \RX KRZ WR SURÚW JUHDWO\ IURP the sale of your home using this strategy and our other proven methods.

The Leura Gardens Festival, now in its 51st year, is a mustvisit attraction for gardeners from all over Australia. And with the sad ending of the long-running Open Gardens Australia, many gardeners are looking to Leura to provide their necessary “gardening fix” for the year. This year’s Leura Gardens Festival will take place from Saturday, October 3 to Sunday, October 11, 2015. Visitors are this year being invited to experience the magic of Spring in the beautiful Blue Mountains. Ten wonderful Leura gardens will be open for the festival, including two brand new to the festival, two returning after a break, plus several magical old favourites. And in an exclusive offer for tour groups, special garden viewings are available for groups of 20+ people in the five days (Monday, September 28 – Friday, October 2, 2015) prior to the main festival. Three of these gardens will only be open in the pre-festival period. Visitors to the main festival can also enjoy the always-popular music programme, this year featuring several new performers, and an art show highlighting works done by local artists depicting the festival gardens. Visitors can also take advantage of the excellent prices at the festival plant sales centre which will offer many exotic and native plants which are hard to get elsewhere. Plants are sourced from a wide variety of nurseries so visitors from any climate should be able to find some treasures to suit their particular conditions. The Leura Gardens Festival is a registered charity totally run by local volunteers. All funds raised are used to purchase equipment for the Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial Hospital as well as supporting other local medical organisations. More details of this not-to-be missed event for garden lovers are available on our website at www.leuragardensfestival.com. au or phone 0431 095 279.

COUNSELLING CORNER Article by: Cait Wotherspoon from Indigo Counselling & Psychotherapy W: indigotherapies.com.au P: 0434 865 429 E: cait@indigotherapies.com.au
Kids Can Drown Right in Front of You Spring is just around the corner and we all spend more time outdoors and in the pool. I want to share a personal, painful story with you. I’ve always thought that when kids are drowning, they make a lot of noise. Truth is, they don’t – it’s a silent killer. A mum and I were standing in the bathroom supervising 3 children in the bath (5 & 3 years old and a 9 months old). The mum and I were talking when the oldest one said calmly, “Mum look at John”. He was quietly floating under the water, we had no idea he was drowning right in front of us. We pulled him out and he coughed and spluttered but he was okay. A new report out recently states that supervision needs to be more direct, maintaining contact with the child in the water at all times. The good news is that 90% of children who needed resuscitation were given CPR and this contributed to a decrease in drowning deaths. Statistics from Westmead Children’s Hospital found that a lapse in parental supervision contributed to more than half of all near-drowning events. The brain starts to die in 2 – 3 minutes after being starved of oxygen. Spring check list: 1. Learn CPR 2. Keep pool gates closed 3. Supervise our children Have a great, fun and safe Spring.

PAWS A WHILE With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027
Theresa had a Baby Girl!!!! Congratulations to Theresa and her partner on the safe delivery of baby Zahra Grace. Theresa is currently on maternity leave. RSPCA Cupcake Day Was a Huge Success A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA. We hosted a Cupcake Week at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital starting on Monday 17th August 2015. Thank you to everyone who came in and donated and ate a cupcake or two. Also a huge thank you for the online donations. We raised over $500.00 for the RSPCA with your help. Renai, Sheridan, Rachel, Stacey, Eden, Lizzie, Jessica, Ben and Vicki cooked up a storm and provided the most delicious peppermint slice, other delicious slices, and of course cupcakes. The Pupcakes were made from the Hills WD science diet baked into cupcakes and iced with peanut butter. Pony and Bella loved eating the Pupcakes! Thanks again for supporting a great cause! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community, through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations,
fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants, to support its vital daily work. We wish every day was cupcake day! Dog Lovers Show Was Fantastic The Sydney Dog Lovers Show on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th August 2015 at The Hordern Pavilion was fantastic! Camille Brandt attended the Dog Lovers Show as a special guest of Rose-Hip Vita and took Pony and Bella. Camille answered numerous questions from the public at the Rose-Hip Vital stall. I was so proud of Pony and Bella, they loved all of the attention. Pony was such a crowd pleaser. Bella was clever (as usual), she just laid down and let the people come to her for a pat. Pony walked up to everyone for a pat and by lunchtime he needed a well earned nap. The Sydney Dog Lovers Show had over 150+ exhibitors showcasing dog products and services in Australia. So many freebies! There were so many celebrities, including Dr Katrina & The Wonderdogs, Dr Lisa Chimes (Bondi Vet), James & Anthony (Village Vets Australia on the The LifeStyle Channel) and Laura Vissaritis (Dognitive Therapy) as MC. What a great weekend! Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment.
