Jordan Springs Welcomes 1,000th Home Owner The Jordan Springs community is celebrating a significant milestone as it welcomes its 1,000th home owner since launching in 2010. Currently home to 2,600 people, the award winning Lendlease master-planned community is projected to be home to approximately 6,500 people upon its completion in 2020. Jordan Springs has drawn a wide range of property hunters thanks to the affordability, diversity of housing and amenities on offer. The large number of sales is reflective of both the unique offering at Jordan Springs and the growing popularity of the Western Sydney area among families, professionals and downsizers, who are increasingly attracted to the convenient location, facilities and infrastructure in the area. Jobayed Amin and his young family are very excited to be the 1,000th home owners to join the growing community. “We were drawn to Jordan Springs by the prospect of a strong community that is affordable and convenient.” “For us the decision to buy here was simple with the convenience of a vibrant town centre and shops, impressive village lake, local parks, access to facilities and the proximity to the Penrith CBD” Continued pg. 7

With over 50 children attending, they were treated to face painting and story time by the Touched By Olivia Foundation along with a variety of other fun fairy activities. General Manager for Lendlease’s Communities business in NSW/ACT, Arthur Ilias says events like Fairy Day are a great example of the strong community ties between Jordan Springs residents and the wider Penrith region. These events help demonstrate the ongoing support between Lendlease and the local council. “We love to see so many local children and families getting involved in community events. Aside from being a fun day for the kids, hosting events like these in conjunction with Penrith Council are important in creating a sense of belonging in the wider community and help contribute to the vibrant spirit in Jordan Springs.â€?

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the third Sunday and 8am on the fourth Sunday
When one stops to ask the question ‘why am I here’ it is caught up in the wider question ‘what is life – what is society’. Philosophy, sociology, psychology, anthropology, theology are but some of the approaches in attempting to give answer to the questions. What wonderful arenas of enquiry they are and there are few who would be bold enough to claim mastery in all these areas of enquiry. So it is the individual must, in drawing from this learning, give credence to their particular source. Theology as a source provides the long history and ongoing credence for belief in God. Now belief in God these days is often governed by individual perception rather than in the acceptance of the Absolute: God who is indefinable, beyond total comprehension. However taken as a given, engenders for those who look for meaning a wonderful experience of the search for answers. As Saint John many years ago argued- test the spirits to see if they be of God. In itself the search has dangers-insanity can be the end result. Now in the search keep two principles in mind: The first principle is that life itself is a given. We are born at a time and into a nationality of which we had no choice. The second principle is that within the world’s beauty and ugliness, joy and cruelty the world and the universe is a given. Responding to these allows us to construct and discipline our own personality. An important rider is that the teaching of Jesus Christ the Absolute is always present. To accept this lays the foundation for the acceptance that we have the freedom to ‘be’. This gives a wonderful impetus with the magnitude of the search. It is Jesus’ life and work that gives the positive groundwork: not I but the grace of God which is always present waiting for a positive response.

JORDAN SPRINGS WATER SAFETY
Continued from pg. 1
Article by: Nepean Aquatic Centre A: 16 – 19 Lambridge Place, Penrith P: 4730 8900 W: nepeanaquaticcentre.com.au
Jordan Springs Welcomes 1,000th Home Owner
Water is an integral part of the great Australian lifestyle, and with the prevalence of home swimming pools and lakes in new communities such as Jordan Springs, it is very important that water safety is a priority at all times. Home pools and spas are obvious drowning hazards, but there are many other items and areas which present a significant drowning threat to young children in and around the home, such as buckets, bathtubs, eskies, fountains, fishponds, lakes, drains, inflatable pools, and even pet bowls. It is crucial that these are emptied, covered, put away and not left where they can fill up with water. Most toddler drowning deaths occur when parents are distracted, by other siblings, preparing meals, phone calls or any other number of parental duties. Royal Life Saving Australia says that children need constant supervision when they’re in, on, or around any water, and that pool gates must be self closing and well maintained. Swim Australia recommends that all parents learn and regularly update their CPR skills, and that all children should learn to swim from a young age (4 - 6 months) to keep them safer in and around the water.
General Manager for Lendlease’s Communities business in NSW/ ACT, Arthur Ilias said the milestone demonstrates how the landmark project has been enormously successful for both Lendlease and the region. “Five years ago when construction on Jordan Springs began we recognised the need to meet the housing, population and infrastructure demands of booming Western Sydney. “We are so happy to welcome our 1,000th home owner and will continue to ensure the changing needs of the region’s residents are met with consultation, development and investment.” In 2014 the Jordan Springs project was awarded the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s Best Masterplanned Development in New South Wales and was also identified as the best-selling residential project in Australia by the National Land Survey Program. Solar – Myths and Legends My name is James (Jim) Hill and I own and operate Nepean Solar Solutions, a locally based company in Penrith. I am a licensed electrical contractor and accredited Solar PV Designer and Installer. There are many misconceptions revolving around the renewable energy sector and in particular the Solar Energy market and I would like to clear a few of these up. First and most important of all. Sun The sun still rises and sets every day, day after day. The sun produces energy. No-one taxes sunlight (yet!). Government Rebates There are very attractive rebates in the form of STC’s available to you which are generally given at point of sale that bring the price of a typical 4.0kw system down to around $5,000.00. That is double the size and less than the price than 2011. Feed-In Tariffs These are very much smaller than those offered a few years ago and now tend to be around $0.05 per kWh. But we don’t sell it now we use what we produce. Electricity Costs Electricity now costs between $0.23 and $0.26 per kWhr. It is common knowledge that this will continue to rise in the future. In 2011 the same electricity cost $0.18 per kWhr resulting in an increase of over 30% in four years. How Do We Measure Your Solar Requirements? There are three main characteristics that determine the size of the system you require; • Current electricity usage. • Available Roof space. • Your budget. Call me now to start saving on your electricity! (See ad above).

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services P: 0409 986121 or 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting In Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com I have been travelling around the community recently, meeting and chatting with parents. It has been great to hear what parents think about their role as parents, the joys and the struggles. And we all know that there are a lot of both. I also get a lot of enquiries from parents over the phone or via email, who are confused about what services are available to them. This month, I am listing some of the frontline support services that are available in the community to address your concerns, whatever level they may be. Who do you go to if you have a few specific concerns – the baby is not sleeping well, your 2 year-old is not sharing, your 4 year-old still doesn’t have a friend at preschool, your 7 year-old is too focused on screens, etc ? • Early Childhood Health clinics provide support with infant feeding and parenting, and developmental screening. • Karitane Careline 1300 227 464 7 days per week, regarding the care of young children • Tresillian Parents Help Line 1300 272736 7 days per week, regarding children aged 0 to 5 years • ParentLine – 1300 1300 52, 7 days per week, regarding children up to 18 years • Facebook and Blogs – social media is prolific. Check the qualifications of the person running the sites you are getting your advice from. I recently saw a video post on Facebook get thousands of ‘likes’ where the parent was clearly abandoning and laughing at her distressed child – horrific. Some good sites are Dr Justin Coulson, Dr Laura Markham, Dr Beth Onufrak, and Dr Darci Walker (Core Parenting) – note the ‘Dr’ in front of each of these names. You seem to be struggling with quite a few things. You may be yelling at the kids more often than you like. You and your partner may be arguing about how best to parent. You may not be confident in your skills as a parent. Or you just want to update your skills and learn more. • Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) has quite a few options available. You can attend a free Triple P group which will go for approximately two hours per week for 5 to 6 weeks. Triple P is also available online for those parents who can’t attend a group, and it costs$80. Penrith Community Health offers Triple groups in the evening. NCNS offers Teen Triple P. • The ‘Resourcing Parents’ website lists the parenting services available to parents throughout NSW. Go to http://www.resourcingparents.nsw.gov.au/. • Penrith Community Health offers counselling for parents, children, and young people. The intake phone number is 1800 222 608. There is no shame in asking for support or assistance. Parenting is a tough job. Children are complex. You think you have them all figured out and then they grow into another stage with a whole new set of challenges. As a grandmother of 6 said to me recently “it never hurts to learn more, and connect with others who are going through the same thing as you”. Next month, I will list the services available to parents who are concerned that their child may have a disability or disorder.

Little Big Dash Comes to Sydney: 10 Fun Obstacles Over 3 Kms! Sanitarium Health & Wellbeing announced that Little BIG DASH will be held in Sydney for the first time on Sunday 23 August 2015, following a successful launch in Brisbane. Little BIG DASH is an obstacle adventure full of colour, fun and guaranteed laughs designed for families to enjoy getting active together. Thousands of ‘Dashers’, in parent and child teams, are anticipated to go wild over a three kilometre course at Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith. Parent-child teams of two to six members will explore ten colourful obstacle stages together, including dancing through the Donut Dash, dodging the Big Blob Balls, navigating through the Bubble Blast and tackling the giant Rumble Tumble Tower, and a new inflatable Footy Frenzy stage. Australian Cricket Legend Brett Lee said he was delighted to be the ambassador for Little BIG DASH. “I'm a big kid at heart and this event gives me the opportunity to release that inner-child while having heaps of fun with the children.” “Each stage of Little BIG DASH is designed to bring so much enjoyment for parent and child that the exercise sharing is incidental,” said Lee. At the final Hand Stand, ‘Dashers’ create a unique memento by exchanging hand prints in fun patterns on their Little BIG DASH shirts. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT... HENRY FULTON PUBLIC SCHOOL? At the start of Term 3, we are offering many varied and exciting opportunities for our students. This includes our K-6 Athletics Carnival in week 2. Our primary students have been practising their skills for the field and running events and the K-2 children will be participating in lots of fun events as well. We are extremely lucky that many of our parents support us by helping the staff to run the different events at our carnival. Education Week was held in late July where we hosted our Open Day for parents and visitors; entertaining them with a concert and welcoming them into our classrooms. The students are always very excited to show their parents all the wonderful work that they have been doing in class. Our Stage 3 students are looking forward to their excursion to the Bathurst Goldfields which will give them a taste of what life was like on the goldfields. We also have our dance groups and choir performing at the Cranebrook Creative and Performing Arts Festival in midAugust. Our choir is also performing at the Opera House as part of the Pulse choir. More busy and exciting times ahead at Henry Fulton Public School! Sharon Crowley, Relieving Principal Phone - 4730 4136 Fax - 4730 4160

Pop Up Park Set to be Permanent
Article by: Cait Wotherspoon from Indigo Counselling & Psychotherapy W: indigotherapies.com.au P: 0434 865 429 E: cait@indigotherapies.com.au
Penrith’s innovative Pop Up Park is set to become a permanent fixture. Penrith Council last month endorsed a report that recommended a new permanent park be designed for the location at the western end of High Street, in consultation with local businesses, residents and the Penrith CBD Corporation. Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said this ambitious trial project had been a success and could be used as a blueprint for other Australian communities wanting to place urban transformation in local hands. “The park was designed by community and business representatives, designers and student architects in 2013. They were guided by world renowned urban tactician Mike Lydon and place-making specialists Place Partners and The Lot,” Cr Fowler said. “The recognition of this project in the prestigious Planning Institute of Australia (NSW) Great Place Awards program is testament to Council’s innovative approach to trialling changes in public spaces.” In June 2014 Council responded to feedback from users and business owners and the eastern end of the Pop Up Park was reopened to vehicle traffic, with the introduction of parking spaces for short term parking. Surveys, conducted by Urban Design and Planning Consultants Hames Sharley Pty Ltd following the park’s trial period, showed that a majority of users and business owners believed it should become permanent. “The construction of the trial park has allowed Council to assess the need and impacts of a permanent facility at minimal cost,” Cr Fowler said. “The temporary nature of the park meant that some compromises were originally made in regards to the choice of construction material. This will be addressed in the new design.” Council resolved that the new design should also address the need for amenities, lighting and wi-fi with an ongoing marketing program planned. The Pop Up Park will continue while a permanent park is designed.
5 Tips to Help with the Death of Your Pet Our pets are part of the family and we love them dearly. They’re companions, confidants and comforters. Playing a huge part in our daily routine. After all they are, “Man’s Best Friend”. My dog is all of these things and more. He has an entertaining personality and energetic spirit. At the vet recently I was informed that he’s 10 years old. I want him to be around forever. I thought about how I’m going to live without him, (I don’t want to think about that) and how grieving his loss will affect me. The death of a pet is difficult. Here’s the tips! 1. Gather your support network and tell your pet stories; show photos; have a ceremony etc. Pet loss is difficult because they love you unconditionally; they sit, listening to your woes without judgment. 2. Create a memorial. Buy a statue or build a garden. Something tangible will help you remember your precious pet. 3. Tough times: like walking in the door after work and your pet isn’t there to greet you (like they do every night); at feeding time; when you walked or played with them. Recognise triggers and distract yourself by reading a book, calling a friend or having a bath. 4. Emotional times: People don’t realize how painful the sight of a leash or bowl might be. You don’t have to pack their things away immediately. Measure how you respond to seeing their belongings and only put them away when you feel you can (without any regret) 5. You’re not crazy!: Some people think that they are easily replaceable. Know that not everyone will understand your grief, so be with the people who do.
