Council Calls For Local Hero Nominations If you admire someone for making a difference to the Penrith community, then give them the recognition they deserve and nominate them for a 2015 Australia Day Award. The wonderful news that a full study of a comet will be possible if the Rosetta probe is successful in placing a lander. It has taken 10 years after 6.4 billion kilometres was travelled by the probe since being launched. Hopefully further data will be gained in our understanding of the universe in which earth is just a tiny ‘dot’. The mind boggles in coming to comprehend the wonder and the mystery. But equally so is the wonder and mystery that the molecular biologist Francis Crick, who gained fame in his role of discovering the double helix structure of DNA argued that you, your joys and sorrows, memories and ambition, your sense of personal identity and free will are in fact no more than the behaviour of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules. Christian anthropology has down through history argued for the teaching that all creation as understood by probe and analysis constitutes a ‘whole’ of which human beings are but a part. So from molecular intricacy of the human body to the vast expanse of the universe nothing is isolated. The Ebola virus destroying so many lives at the moment with the frustrating reality that medical science cannot find a cure, to the wonderful achievement of the human mind in opening up the vastness of space, each in its part is related to the ‘whole’. Another great

mystery is that we are born into situations in which we had no choice! One can enter the world say as a European, an African, an Asian. What is a common factor is that the mind and body grows and develops within the structures in which it lives. A further dimension is the religious aspect. The soul of the person completes the ‘whole’. But one asks what is the soul? Roughly it can be argues the soul is the mind, the intellectual dimension of what makes us our self. In this the Christian can argue that while indeed the vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated molecules constitutes the human, it is belief in the soul that completes the ‘whole’. The richness, the wonder, the mystery of the Christian faith is that the whole person has an eternity that rests not in aspects of the created order but in the hope given to us in the Resurrection of Jesus, the Christ. This hope recognizes the reality of death that annihilates to our understanding the whole person but places trust not in the hope of survival after death but in the hope of death and resurrection. This in itself will be the action of the Father who has given the assurance in the life, death and resurrection of the Son. It is by trust in the Holy Spirit that by prayer, the life lived, the right application of reason that the mystery of the ‘whole’ of creation results in awe and worship. Nepean Valley RSL Day Club Celebrates 1st Birthday The Nepean Valley RSL Day Club celebrated their 1st Birthday last month with a celebratory lunch and cake cutting at the Macquarie room, Penrith RSL. Day Clubs are a weekly social program for older people from both ex-service and the wider community. Day Clubs offer social support and friendship to older people who are still living in the community but who are unable to attend more active programs. Many Day Club members believe they are healthier, happier and more active due to their involvement in their Club. Day Clubs are entirely run by volunteers with the support of the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), NSW Office and the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL), (NSW Branch). Leura Gardens Festival Celebrations Garden lovers of all ages are invited to visit Leura this October to help the popular Leura Gardens Festival celebrate 50 years of showcasing spring in the Upper Blue Mountains. This year’s festival will take place from Saturday, October 4 to Sunday October 12, and feature 11 wonderful gardens, some of which took part in the original festival and some of which are new to the festival, as well as the return of several old favourites. There will also be an associated programme of events including a Music Festival, Art Show and horticultural talks by respected presenters, including well-known horticulturists, writer and speaker, Jennifer Stackhouse. The Music Festival is on every afternoon from 1:00pm and will cover everything from jazz to barbershop to opera. The many popular performers taking part include the Orpheus Quartette, Silver Fox and the Penrith City Harmony Chorus. Visitors can also take advantage of the excellent prices at the festival plant sales centre, which will offer a wide range of plants including the special 50-year celebration souvenir, a gorgeous yellow daisy named “Leura Gold”. Whether you are a first-time visitor to the festival or one of the many people from all over Australia who come back year after year, there will be much for you to experience and enjoy, and, as well, you are supporting a very worthy cause. The Leura Gardens Festival was born in 1965, with the aim of raising money to purchase equipment for the Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial Hospital. From the Principal’s Desk...Llandilo Public School At Llandilo Public School we are very lucky to have so many teachers who are willing to organise many extra-curricular activities for our students. Over the course of the past few weeks our students have been involved with Chess tournaments, excursions to Warragamba Dam, Touch Football carnivals, PSSA sport and Zumba lessons. We also celebrated the 60th anniversary of the very first Education Week by opening our classrooms to parents and community members. Our visitors were entertained by our dance groups, which included a Zumba demonstration. The Book Fair ‘Reading Garden’ looked amazing too and it was well supported by the whole school community. Our Pre-School Early Learning at Llandilo Program (PELL) for Kindergarten 2015 has also been a huge success. The PELL program runs over the course of 10 weeks. It aims to support children in their transition to Kindergarten by providing opportunities for pre-schoolers to experience life in the ‘big school’ setting. It is run in addition to our Kindergarten orientation program, which starts on the 13th November. To celebrate Book Week, we are hosting a costume parade. All students (and staff ) dress up as their favourite book character and join in the parade. It’s a lot of fun and the parade promotes the enjoyment of reading books, regardless of age. Our students also recently competed in the District Athletics Carnival. They all displayed great sportsmanship, whilst encouraging each other and everyone had a great day. Some students will now represent the district at the upcoming Regional Athletics Carnival. Our Walkathon raised over $10 000 which will go towards

technological improvements in order to take this school further forward, as we move through 21st century teaching/learning. Everyone is very enthusiastic about our future plans and it won’t be too long before we are working with our own stock of Ipads. Hopefully by the start of term 4, our technological resources will be well stocked and heavily utilised. The Cranebrook Performing Arts Festival was also a huge success and I was amazed at the talent on display. The audience watched many polished musical and dance performances, and the costumes were amazing. It was a wonderful way to showcase the many talents of teachers and students who attend the Cranebrook Learning Community of Schools. A fine display of Public Education! Joan Smyth, Acting Principal

Sydney’s Only Picnic Races are Back

Following on from last year’s inaugural event, Fernhill Estate in conjunction with Hawkesbury Race Club is once again bringing country racing to Sydney. As announced at a launch yesterday, the Fernhill Picnic Race Day will be held on Saturday 18 October. This year’s date change sees the event coinciding with Caulfield Cup Day and City Tattersalls Club Cup Day at Royal Randwick. The organisers only see this as a positive. “It’s such a great time of year, the weather hopefully won’t be as hot as last year and everyone is really getting into the swing of the Spring Racing Carnival,” said the event’s Project Manager, Tai Ryan. Located just an hour from Sydney’s CBD and 10 minutes from Penrith, Fernhill Estate is set on 1,800 acres in the Mulgoa Valley. The property features a 2,400m racetrack which had previously been privately used until Fernhill’s new owners Brenda and Simon Tripp were granted permission from Racing NSW and Penrith City Council to use the track for a picnic race day. The prize money levels, all put forward by Fernhill directly, are the highest for any picnic race meeting in Australia. Yesterday’s launch saw the introduction of the event’s Ambassadors, former NRL player Trent Barrett and local performer and The Voice finalist, Brittanie Shipway. Both are local residents and are looking forward to supporting this unique community day out. The Picnics’ official charity partner was also announced as The John Maclean Foundation. The John Maclean Foundation exists to change the lives of young Australians who use wheelchairs and a percentage of all Picnic Race Day ticket sales will be donated to the charity. This partnership was kicked off today with eight Fernhill staff members completing an Ice Bucket Challenge under a tractor! It’s sloping green hills and ancient trees make it the perfect place for relaxation while its stables and track have led to it being a working enterprise in the equestrian world. Centre to the Fernhill experience is the heritage listed sandstone mansion, built from sandstone quarried on the property by convicts and constructed by 20 Irish stonemasons brought out under the ‘bounty system’ of immigration. “Last year’s Picnics was amazingly successful for an inaugural event,” said Mrs Brenda Tripp, Fernhill Estate Owner and CEO. “There were a few operational issues as you’d expect with the

first ever event, but the great thing is they have all been rectified. “Based on the feedback we received, visitors can expect much more shade and easier car park access for this year’s Picnics.” The day will be compered by TV personality Ben Damon and 2GB’s Ray Hadley has again come on board to commentate the six race program, including the feature event, the $15,000 Fernhill Cup which was taken out by the Goulburn-trained Bush Brandy (Graeme Spackman) and jockey Tim Phillips in 2013. But the action doesn’t stop on the track. Female fashion will be a draw card via the Luv My Bag Fashions on the Field competition; children will be thoroughly entertained with a range of activities in the Outback Steakhouse Family Zone; and the Food Fare will offer local and international cuisine to tickle the taste buds. Live music including the popular post-race concert and a performance by Brittanie Shipway will feature, plus one lucky patron will win a holiday to Hamilton Island! Police are appealing for information after a girl was allegedly approached by a man in Llandilo near Penrith. About 3pm (Monday 1 September 2014), a 13-year-old girl was walking along Ninth Avenue towards Third Street in Llandilo, when a white Holden Commodore VX pulled up beside her. The driver, a man, has been described as Mediterranean/Middle Eastern in appearance, aged between mid 20’s to 30’s and short black hair, spoke to the girl. She became afraid and kept walking. A few minutes later the car drove away and her mother arrived. The incident was reported to police and St Marys Local Area Command attended and commenced an investigation. Anyone with information about this incident should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://www1.police.nsw.gov.au/. Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. We remind people they should not report crime information via our Facebook and Twitter pages. Meanwhile, the incident has again prompted police to encourage parents to discuss the ‘Safe People, Safe Places’ messages with their children, including; • Make sure your parents or another adult you know knows where you are at all times. • Always walk straight home or to the place you are walking to. Walk near busier roads and streets, or use paths where there are lots of other people. • Know where safe places are – a shop, service station, police station, library or school. If you are ever frightened, you should go to one of these places and ask them to call the police. • Learn about safe adults you can look for and talk to if you need help – police officers, teachers at school, adults you know and trust. • Don’t talk to people you don’t know and never get into a car with someone you don’t know. If a car stops on the side of the road and you don’t know the person inside, do not stop. • If you are scared and can use a phone, call 000 and tell them you are scared. • If someone tries to grab you, yell out, ‘Go away, I don’t know you’. This lets other people know you have been approached by someone you don’t know.

Parents who come to my groups hear me say quite often… “What is the most POSITIVE thing I can do, to GUIDE and EDUCATE my child, to teach him/her new SKILLS and BEHAVIOURS, and maintain the RELATIONSHIP?” It’s a prompt that I wrote for parents to guide them in growing up their children. Recently, in one of the groups, a parent asked… “What can I do about a child interrupting whilst I’m speaking to someone? He does it all of the time.” Why do children interrupt? Because what they have to say is the most important thing to them at this point in time. Children are egocentric, they do believe that whole world revolves around them. They are not deliberately being selfish, it’s part of their brain development, and if you think about it it’s a survival tactic. They get excited about what they want to say. They want to say it quickly because if they don’t say it right now they might forget and everyone will miss out on hearing their wisdom. It’s not because they are rude or stupid. Why do we have to constantly remind our kids about some of our rules and values? Because they are kids. Because when they get excited, they forget about the rules and social niceties. Because their logical and rational brain is not fully developed. Dr Becky Bailey, a clinical psychologist in the USA says that we have to remind our kids of the rules up to 2,000 times, for each rule. That’s a lot of reminding, but that’s part of the job of being a parent. So, let’s break down our problem with the child interrupting using the above prompt… Most positive thing? Being kind, caring, and supportive. Guide and educate? Give the child a hand signal to stop. Relationship? Look the child in the eye to let him know you’ve heard him. Draw him in close for a side hug, or softly touch his shoulder. New skills and behaviours? At the first available moment, acknowledge his excitement and gently remind the child that he interrupted and remind him of what to do instead. Say, “Hey I know you are keen to tell me something, but you interrupted the conversation between Dad and I, next time please say ‘excuse me’ “.

Now, in this instance the young fella has ADHD, which means he has trouble with hyperactivity, impulse control, memory, organisation, and focus. And a lot of kids with ADHD also have anxiety. So we added the additional strategy of teaching him to write down on his white board what he needs to tell Mum so he doesn’t get anxious about forgetting it. Of course, if it’s an emergency, like the stove has caught fire or the baby has climbed onto the change table and is about to nose dive off it, then we don’t mind our kids interrupting us. Do we? That’s a whole lot better than calling our kids ‘rude’ (a putdown), screaming at them for interrupting, and telling them to go away. What do they learn when this approach is used? How does it make them feel? How likely are they to want to come and tell you something if this is the reaction they always get? If you have a child with ADHD or ADD you may like to come along to a support group that has recently been established in the Penrith area. The group meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:30pm at South Penrith Neighbourhood Centre. All welcome.

Education Week was a huge success at Henry Fulton Public School. We had hundreds of parents, carers, grandparents and aunties and uncles visit our school for Open Day. The day began with a show in the hall. We had our K-2 putting on a Zumba display. This display gave our visitors an insight into part of our physical fitness program. This was followed by our choir who performed a wonderful rendition of “Wings”. Then the final item was a performance of our boys dance group who performed to “Can You Feel It.” A highlight of this performance was when the lights went out during the dance and all you could see were the “Lime Fluro” parts of their outfits moving to the music. After this our visitors then visited the classrooms for the rest of the morning. This gave our students a chance to show off their hard work and achievements that they have made in their education. This was followed by our visitors enjoying morning tea with the children, a great way to finish off the morning. Last month our P&C held our Annual BBQ at Bunnings, North Penrith. ď ˛ď€ For your child’s safety ensure that all climbable objects like chairs, pot plants, BBQs, shrubs, rocks and toys should not be kept near pool fences. Children use these things to climb into pool areas. Spring is the time to spring-clean your backyard and swimming pool – for safety sake. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said pool fences fail when they’re not maintained, when gates are faulty or when climbable objects are left nearby. “As the weather warms up it’s imperative to conduct a home pool safety checklist,â€? Cr Fowler said. “Pool owners need to check that all fence panels are securely attached, that gates close automatically and there are no rusted, loose or missing screws. “Just as importantly, all climbable objects like chairs, pot plants, BBQs, shrubs, rocks and toys should not be kept near pool fences. Children use these things to climb into pool areas.â€? Penrith Council’s Swimming Pools Barrier Inspection Program – developed and adopted by Council in 2013 as a response to changes to state legislation – was designed to enhance the safety of children under five around backyard swimming pools. The Barrier Inspection Program applies to all pools and spas, including those that are portable and inflatable, which hold 30cm or more of water. “We need to ensure pools and spas have safety barriers that meet the Australian standards. By being proactive, we can stop drownings and the devastating injuries that can occur to children who nearly drown,â€? Cr Fowler said. Fees apply for inspections. It is $150 for the first inspection and $100 if a second inspection is required. If your pool fence complies, a certificate of compliance can be issued which is valid for three years. So devote this weekend to spring cleaning your pool area and contact Council to organise inspections as soon as possible, Cr Fowler said. You can carry out a self assessment of your swimming pool barrier fence to assist with compliance, before a Council inspection. Checklists can be found at swimmingpoolregister. nsw.gov.au/checklists. Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fanforced. Heat oil in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic. Cook, stirring, for 5 minutes or until softened. Add mince. Cook, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up mince, for 8 minutes or until browned. 2. Add beans. Reduce heat to medium. Simmer, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until mixture is thick. 3. Grease 2 large baking trays. Place tortillas on trays. Top with mince mixture and cheese. Bake for 10 minutes or until tortillas are crisp and golden. Cut into wedges. Top with avocado. Serve.

Case Study Samantha and Luke had been married for a few years and were both bringing in a comparable wage. They were equally contributing to their living expenses, including their mortgage and utilities. Luke paid the mortgage and Samantha paid the utilities, groceries and everyday living expenses (including a car loan). In March 2011 Samantha found out she was pregnant - and they were both very excited! The months rolled on very quickly and their beautiful baby boy arrived. Samantha’s paid parental commenced 6 weeks after her baby was born - not straight away first problem! The next problem was that the paid parental leave was $400 lower than Samantha’s weekly wage. Bills rolled in, but there wasn’t enough income. Letters from the bank were coming in. The car loan, personal loan and credit card repayments were behind. They tried several different banks to consolidate but no one would help them as Samantha wasn’t working. Samantha decided she should go back to work and met with her employer to discuss returning on a part time basis. The only option for her was to come back full time or there was no job to come back to. As she couldn’t go back to work fulltime, she was left with no choice but to resign. It took another 8 months to find a new job, but by that time Samantha had to settle for a full time position. Rewind! What Samantha and Luke should have done was call their broker for financial assistance. But they didn’t they went straight to the banks. This only resulted in knock backs - and of course their credit score was damaged in the process. If they had a broker who knew them and their situation, there could have and would have been a much different outcome. Action! Calling your broker is usually something that most people don’t think to do when they fall pregnant. When we meet up with couples like Samantha and Luke (often referred to us by our existing clients) they all wish they had a broker who could have given them some advice. They now know they would be in a much different financial situation if they did. These couples now tell all their friends to sort their finances before going on maternity leave.

RSPCA Cupcake Day Was a Huge Success

A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA. We hosted a Cupcake Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on Monday 18th August 2014. Thank you to everyone who came in and donated and ate a cupcake or two. Also a huge thank you for the online donations. We raised $700.00 for the RSPCA with your help. Sheridan, Rachel, Stacey, Carly, Eden, Lizzie and Renai cooked up a storm and provided the most delicious peppermint slice, Mars Bar and Malteser slice, and cupcakes. The Pupcakes were made from the Hills WD science diet baked into cupcakes and iced with peanut butter. Pony, Bella and Callie loved eating the Pupcakes! Thanks again for supporting a great cause! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work. We wish every day was cupcake day!

Animals should not eat cupcakes unless they are specially made with safe, animal friendly ingredients. Chocolate is especially toxic to many animals! Remember, Pupcakes are special treats and shouldn’t be fed to your dog regularly! This recipe makes around 12-14 Pupcakes. Ingredients 2 ž cups water Âź cup unsweetened apple sauce Âź cup oats 4 cups wholemeal flour 1 cup fresh diced apple 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 cage free egg, beaten slightly 4 tablespoons honey Method Preheat oven to 175 degrees Celsius. Spray muffin tins with cooking oil. Mix all wet ingredients thoroughly. Combine dry ingredients in a separate bowl. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients slowly and mix well. Pour into muffin tins and bake for 25-30 minutes. Once the Pupcakes have cooled, you can ice the Pupcakes with smooth peanut butter.
