New Group Homes Improve Lives for Cherrywood Residents Minister for Disability Services John Ajaka and Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres last month announced the start of work on an accommodation project for people with disability who currently live at Cherrywood Village Large Residential Centre at Llandillo. Mr Ajaka said the NSW Government has funded $13.2 million towards the Penrith project to help provide improved living spaces and conditions for the residents. “This is a significant milestone for the residents of Cherrywood Village, their families and carers. “Moving people with disability out of large residential centres and into the smaller group homes is a key priority for the NSW Government. “This is why we have allocated $159 million to replace 14 small and large residential centres across the state with contemporary community accommodation by June 2018,” Mr Ajaka said. Mr Ayres said the project at Penrith was a partnership between the NSW Government and the Australian Foundation for Disability (AFFORD) which will cater for 40 residents. “This is great news for our local community encompassing and including people with disability,” Mr Ayres said. “The project will deliver 10 villas, four apartments and one group home across six sites at Penrith. The properties will range in size from two to four bedrooms. cont...Pg. 4

Brrrr, you can certainly feel the chill in the air as Winter slides around the corner. I must admit, Winter is my favourite season. I love the crisp morning air, and the wonderful array of soups and stews that grace my dinner table throughout the season. There is a real theme of ‘Flying High’ in this edition, as we read about many wins experienced in/around our community of late. Much like our cover story detailing the significant milestone achieved for Cherrywood residents; or the sweet success of Lollylicious on page 7; and 80 amazing years of the Australian Air League on Page 6. Of course, there’s a wealth of information provided by our regular columnists across a broad range of topics covering, faith, finance, children, pets, health and fitness to keep you well informed again this month. There’s lots to read and lots to do in this edition. Why not get warm, enjoy a hot cuppa and have the kids try their hand at our ‘Winter Warming’ Puzzle on page 12. Look out for next month’s edition, where we will be celebrating our first 12 magnificent months of the Jordan Springs Gazette. This month, count your rainbows, not your thunder-storms. Enjoy your community news.

Show of Support for Jordan Springs Many residents of Jordan Springs have asked for an update as to the possible inclusion of postal facilities within their shopping centre and also the relocation of the two bus stops near the corner of the Jordan Springs Boulevard and Lakeside Parade. When all members of Federal and State members of Parliament and Council serving Jordan Springs, including Fiona Scott (Federal Member for Lindsay) Bart Bassett (State Member for Llandilo), Ross Fowler (Mayor of Penrith and councillor for North Ward) and Bernard Bratusa (councillor for South Ward) became aware of the lack of postal facilities in Jordan Springs and the need to reposition two bus stops to better serve our Shopping / Town Centre, they have enthusiastically banded together to work through the issues in an attempt to provide these facilities. Jordan Springs is a fast developing and major hub suburb for the northern area of Penrith. With many local and external residents using the well planned Shopping Centre; the desire for the centre to become a one stop shopping hub with the inclusion of postal facilities and the relocation of the two bus stops will bring with it a substantial benefit for all involved. With the support of our politicians and with the work being undertaken by the Jordan Springs Resident’s Group, there is great excitement that these facilities could be approved and use of the Shopping Centre / Town Centre will be greatly enhanced for all. Your Resident’s Group will keep you updated as more information comes to hand. Cracker Night - bungers, parachutes, spinning wheels nailed to the fence, throw downs, tom thumbs. All those years ago when I was a boy, the long weekend in June was cracker night. Those days are officially gone, but the Queen’s birthday long weekend continues. It is not actually the Queen’s birthday, and half of the nation do not want a Queen as head over our nation, but we are happy to take the long weekend. The Queen is viewed by many as outdated, distant and irrelevant to Australian life in 2014. She is Queen of Australia because Britain claimed this nation as their own in 1788. Prince William and Kate may in time change the opinion polls. Only time will tell if the reign of the British Royal family becomes a distant memory like cracker night. In the Bible, it speaks of another royal who reigns not just over Australia, but over the entire world. Jesus Christ is described as God’s King, the sovereign ruler of the world. Many people consider Jesus just as outdated, distant and irrelevant as the Queen, maybe more so. What gives him the right to claim to reign over the world? It is that he died, was buried and on the third day rose again. You may not like the idea of Jesus reigning over the world, but the Bible says the unique fact of his resurrection from the dead qualifies him as King. His kingdom he says is not of this world. He came to suffer and die so that those who listen to him may join him in his kingdom, the kingdom of heaven, forever. His kingdom will last forever, and you can be a part of that if you will listen to his voice and follow him. If you want to find out more about Jesus the Risen King, contact us on 4730 3434 or via the website www.toms4christ.com Rev. Adam Taylor from...Pg.1

New Group Homes Improve Lives for Cherrywood Residents “Residents will live with friends of their choice and will be able to participate more fully in everyday life including shopping, preparing meals, catching public transport and spending time with family and friends. “Staff will live on site and provide 24 hour care to support residents and help them with their daily routines. “The new homes at Penrith are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2016.” AFFORD was established in 1952 and provides a range of services to over 2,000 people with disability in Sydney including supported accommodation, community participation programs, carer support, employment services and retirement programs. The Executive Director of AFFORD Cliff Haynes said the Cherrywood Village residents had been actively involved in planning their move to Penrith for several years and were delighted to be participating in last month’s celebratory event. “At AFFORD we believe that people with disability should be encouraged to take their rightful place as contributing and valued members of their community, and the Penrith community has always been very supportive of the Cherrywood residents,” Mr Haynes said.

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith last month announced that students from western and south-western Sydney will have a better chance of securing a university place this year under a new agreement between the NSW Government and the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). Stuart Ayres said the NSW Government and UAC have agreed on a more equitable way of distributing bonus points and places for university entry. “Students from socioeconomically disadvantaged areas, Aboriginal students and those from remote rural and regional schools have been under-represented in tertiary education,” Stuart Ayres said. “The NSW Government is addressing this imbalance through a new measure that identifies schools whose students deserve to have automatic access to benefit from UAC’s Educational Access Scheme (EAS). “The EAS may provide participating students with either several crucial bonus points that can make the world of difference, or access to an allocated place. “Public schools in the Penrith that will benefit include: • Kingswood High School and • Cranebrook High School Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli said the socioeconomic measure will be the Family Occupation and Education Index (FOEI), which was developed by the Department of Education and Communities and is used to distribute needs-based funding to public schools. “Forty-two schools are new to the list and the total number of schools eligible will expand to 270 across the State, including 81 in the west and south-west of Sydney,” Mr Piccoli said. “Approximately 1000 more students from public schools in the west and south-west of Sydney will have access to the program this year, as compared to last year, with a total of over 11,000 students from these regions attending identified schools.” Mr Rod Nesbitt, Principal of Kingswood High School said the school is pleased that UAC has recognised that students from Western Sydney, in particular Kingswood High School, are sometimes disadvantaged, for a variety of reasons, when applying for courses at universities. The EAS will allow students from Kingswood High School to gain some bonus points to help them get into courses where they previously were unable to gain enrolment. The Managing Director of UAC, Andrew Stanton, said universities had welcomed the cooperative consultation process that developed the new methodology. “This new list ensures that universities are able to continue the EAS process introduced eight years ago to automatically generate an EAS application for students attending these schools who apply through UAC,” said Mr Stanton. The EAS also accepts applications from individual students whose schools are not on the list, but who have experienced disadvantage. Details can be obtained from the UAC website http://www.uac.edu.au/eas/.

Trinity Sunday (15th June) is an important celebration in the Christian calendar. It was introduced into liturgical observance by Bishop Stephen of Liege Belgium [lived 903 to 930]. The observance slowly became widespread and the Anglican Prayer Book of 1552 gave it prominence in the calendar. What does it celebrate? It is the teaching that emerged in early Christianity that the God who is ‘unknown’ became ‘known’ in the person of Jesus. The teaching arose from many years of debate, often acrimonious, amongst the theologians in the early history of the Church. Whereas Christology is the study of Jesus as the Christ and centres on his life and work, Theology is directed to understanding what is meant by ‘God’. All religions, past and present direct their theology to this question. What the Christian Trinity asserts is that the creator of this universe and life has ‘absorbed’ the created humanity resulting in the affirmation that Jesus is the Christ. Thus the long history of religion resulted in the conviction of the Trinitarian activity of the Creator: of God who creates [Father] God who redeems [Son] God who sanctifies [Spirit] All are technical terms but once taken seriously and in prayer give rich meaning to our existence. The animal kingdom is based on predation (the food chain) whereas human life is based on love- a love that to all intents and purposes passes our understanding but whether at the sexual or mental level is a powerful force. With God it is a continuum which when responded to gives to us the way and the truth and life in its fullness. Disease, suffering, man’s ability to act inhumanly, and death itself does not negate God’s love. Rather they intensify our desire to know and be with God. Theological debate resulting in the Trinitarian doctrine continues to exercise its challenge: that in the person of Jesus whom we affirm to be the Christ, the Son of God in his humanity and divinity revealed the Father’s love and is sustained through the work of God’s Spirit. These three ‘expressions’ assist our affirmation to live life within God’s will and purpose. Hence the importance of celebrating the Holy Trinity. Rev John Hebblewhite

Don’t Leave Winter Fire Safety to Chance Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has urged home owners to take simple precautions to protect life and property during the peak winter house fire season. The State’s annual fire safety awareness campaign reminds home owners what they can do to reduce risk of fire in their home. “Winter is an especially dangerous time of the year for home fires, with more than 60% occurring in the cooler months between May and September,” Stuart Ayres said. “Fire & Rescue NSW responded to 1,910 home fires across NSW between May and September in 2013. Sadly, some of these fires resulted in human fatalities, or serious injuries. “The tragic part is most of these could have been prevented with a few simple steps and precautions.” Preventable fires not only have a personal toll, they also impact on emergency services, hospital staff and others in the community who respond to the blaze and deal with its aftermath. At the recent campaign launch, Fire & Rescue NSW Commissioner Greg Mullins and NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons reminded homeowners to take time to make necessary checks of their homes, and to avoid being complacent. Commissioner Mullins warned householders they could pay a hefty price for complacency, with a fire in the home costing an average $46,000. “On average, firefighters attend 102 home fires a week during winter alone. Nearly half of these fires (47 per cent) start in the kitchen,” he said. “Don’t leave your fire safety to chance this winter. Have a working smoke alarm and a practised home escape

plan and do our free online fire safety checklist (at www. homefiresafetyaudit.com.au) to identify risks in your home,” Commissioner Mullins said.

From the Principal’s Desk Llandilo Public School Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends, I have had the pleasure recently of welcoming a number of families and new residents from Jordan Springs to our school. There is an open invitation for newcomers in the area to ring us and book a visit and tour. I assure you that you cannot help but be impressed with what you see if you accept the invitation. Please ask to speak to Mrs Kathleen Williams our School Administration Manager to organise your visit. During week 3 our students in years 3 and 5 completed the national NAPLAN testing. Results will be sent home later in the year and posted on our website for the wider community to peruse. Our students and school community do not see NAPLAN as a stressful interruption to regular activities and all we ask is that students do their very best. Results of the assessments at Llandilo Public School give a snapshot of student learning and are used to assist students achieve stronger learning outcomes and become more confident 21st century learners. 3 of our young ladies were recently selected to represent Penrith District in the Sydney West Regional Carnival and we congratulate Mikayla, Madison and Stephanie on their performances and wish them all the best for their future when playing the “world game”. During week 4 the school’s recorder group travelled to the iconic Sydney Opera House for rehearsal for their end of year performance. What an exciting experience for our girls and boys. Stage 2 camp to Teen ranch at Cobbity is not far away and should be an enjoyable adventure and action packed activity for participating students. Minister for Education Mr Adrian Piccoli visits the school in mid June to meet with our committed staff and enthusiastic

learners and, we are very much looking forward to his visit and the opportunity to showcase our wonderful place of learning. What an honour for our school to have such an important visitor. More on this visit in next month’s edition. PSSA school sport has now officially commenced each Friday and students are participating in weekly competitive Rugby League, Netball and Soccer opposing other local schools. As you can see, our school environment is jam packed, interesting and varied. My Kindest Regards, Bruno Zuliani (Principal)

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com After many years working with kids, and having three of my own, I am firmly of the belief that parents talk too much. There’s too much questioning, nagging, lecturing, telling them what/how/ when/where/why, taking over, yelling, and yakkity-yak. Too much noise. When my kids come home from school, I ask “how was school”. I never expect any answer other than “good”. And I leave it at that, I rarely ask any more questions. Just asking the question opens up the possibility of communication. I know that each of them will come to me throughout the evening to tell me about their day. They do that when they are in the right space and frame of mind to talk, when they have sifted through all of the information and interactions they have experienced. And when they come to me, I LISTEN. I tend not to ask many questions, but I do a lot of reflective listening – repeating what they have said to me, reflecting on their emotions, being present, being silent and holding that space between their inner and outer worlds. I do the same with the children I work with. Reflective listening enables the child and I to get to the heart of what is bothering the child with very little effort. Everyone likes to be heard and have their thoughts and feelings validated. Parents are surprised when I tell them that I rarely offer solutions to children for their problems. I work alongside rather than stand over the top of. Kids are smart. Through reflective listening, children often get to the solution themselves, and because they have come up with it, they are committed to it. Dr Beth Onufrak in the USA has written a wonderful article on her blog “A Child in Mind” (wordpress). Titled “What’s wrong with the Wh questions?” she explains that questions shut a child down very quickly. Dr Onufrak says that “Wh” questions can be unhelpful because they: 1. Shut down a child’s own narration and conception of the problem 2. Block a child’s sharing of the salient details to him 3. Pigeonhole a child’s thinking into your categories of thought 4. Build a child’s frustration with us adults 5. Make a child more upset from the communication gap She advises that a better alternative is to say to the child “Tell me all about it”. I was talking with a parent recently. She said that her child comes to her to ask for help with a task, but when she tries to help her, the child storms off in a rage. The well-meaning parent then runs after the child asking her lots of “wh” questions to try to get to the bottom of the problem. The child becomes more resentful, and nothing gets resolved. I said that it sounded like there was a disconnect there somewhere, a gap between what the child wanted and what the parents saw as the child’s needs. I suggested that “I messages” are pretty good at sorting out misunderstandings. I wondered how the child might respond if the parent went to the child when she was calm and said something like “I don’t understand it when you ask me to help you with something, and I try to show you what to do, you then get upset and storm off. I would really like to know what I can do better next time, so we can work it out together”. “I messages” communicate how you feel about something without placing blame on anyone. Making time to ‘be with’ our kids, spending time, showing affection, being present, being available, being responsive and reflective, being alongside, and listening, truly listening, to our kids. When we do this , our kids return the effort in spades through being amazingly competent and communicative young ones.

What’s Happening at Henry Fulton Public School ? Term 2 is another busy term for our school community at Henry Fulton Public School. We have our students involved in many sport activities, we have competed in state sports KO’s with great success. Both our boys and girls soccer teams are through to the third round. Our Rugby league team won The Greg Alexander Shield. We are sending very large squad to the regional cross country carnival and we have had three students make regional sports teams. In class, the children have been kept very busy with an interesting and fun educational curriculum which is taught at Henry Fulton. We have had opportunities for our gifted and talented students in different areas. We sent our gifted writers to a writers’ camp last week were they were able to work with authors and refine their talents. We had our most creative students take part in a Digi-Ed Day. This is where students plan, create and then, through animation, make a DVD movie. Many of our students are also taking part in University Of NSW Writing, Science and Spelling competitions. Our Years 5&6 students are also preparing to go on a three day camp later this week. Our teachers have been working hard up grading their skills and have recently completed both their annual CPR Training and Anaphylaxis Training. We also have a very hard working P&C at Henry Fulton. Through their hard work in organising raffles, Mothers Day Stalls and school banking they have been able to buy for the school eight Laptops. This has helped greatly in our classrooms and it is an example of how closely the school and school community work together. Principal: Glen Fairclough

HEALTH MATTERS Article by: Rhonda Rolfe Harmonising Health Ph: 0430 047 421 E: rhonda@harmonisinghealth.com.au W: www.harmonisinghealth.com.au

Winter is No Excuse With winter here it is very easy to give in to those food cravings. The cakes, hot chocolate, sweet biscuits etc that make you feel good when the weather has you feeling a bit down. Before long you have put on several kilos, your clothes are feeling a bit tighter and you know it’s going to be a struggle to reduce the weight again before summer. It’s true that weight reduction or weight gain is relative to the calories in versus calories out, but being stressed, or feeling down also plays a big part. Snacking and binging can help soothe us during stressful and emotional times - especially carbohydrate foods like sugar and starches, because they help distract us from our troubles (albeit, only for the short term) and trigger our body to produce endorphins (feel good hormones). Believe it or not, you often crave foods which you are sensitive to so as well as increasing your weight, giving in to your food cravings could also result in other health problems. What do you crave? What is your comfort food? Do you put yourself on a guilt trip after you have indulged, and swear you’ll never do that again – well until next time anyway. We weren’t born with cravings, addictions etc – they are however something which we can hide behind or use to cover up, or replace something that’s missing in our lives. Eliminating your cravings is simple and can have long term effects on your overall health. It’s up to you.

Using the Equity in your Home to Purchase an Investment Property

Call Matthew Today

If you are already repaying your own home or another investment property, you may be able to use the equity you have built up to purchase an additional property. Let’s use an example to explain this process. Your lender is going to require that the loan amount is less than 80% of the value of the property unless you want to pay lender’s mortgage insurance (LMI), so to keep things simple we will assume that you can only borrow 80%. From our example on the right, you have $250,000 sitting in your home loan that could be used to purchase an investment property. You have two different options available in terms of structuring your loans: 1 Establish a line of credit, or 2 Apply for a standard term loan with a redraw facility or an offset account where the remaining equity will be invested until required.

for your

FREE Home Loan Review Refinance & Save Plus Get up to $1,200.00 (From the Bank)

0423 661 196 or 4732 5888

Potential Property Portfolio Let’s now assume that you purchase an investment property worth $500,000. You again want to avoid LMI so you will need to provide $100,000 as a deposit. You also need to consider the upfront purchase costs. These vary from state to state so we will assume 5% of the total purchase price (or $25,000). This means you will need to provide $125,000 from the equity in your first property. Your tenants and the tax man (through rebates) help pay for the new loan, however sometimes there could be a shortfall to be serviced. This should be taken into account when borrowing to ensure that the loan on the new investment property and your existing property can be serviced within your budget. A margin should be included for any unexpected interest rate rises. Then all you need to do is sit back and let the property take its course with capital gains generating some additional equity over the next seven to ten years as has been proved (even in tough times) over the last century.

* Disclaimer: This article is generic in nature. All investment decisions should be considered wisely and based on your personal and financial circumstances. Seek proper advice before committing to any course of investment action. This is not deemed as advice.

Border Collie Fun Day on Sunday 6th July RSPCA Million Paws Walk on Sunday 18th 2014, 11am to 3pm! May 2014!! Dr Katrina Warren and Kelly Gill are holding their third Border Collie Fun Day at Castle Hill Showground, Dog Arena (Doran Drive, Castle Hill). It will be a family friendly event, inviting Border Collie owners to bring their dog’s for a social afternoon of Border Collie activities. They also expect a lot of spectators as people are welcome without a dog. ‘Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill are delighted to welcome Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital to our Border Collie Fun Day. Dr Camille Brandt will be our official vet on the day and will also be offering free veterinary checks and answering your Border Collie health questions.’ The Fun Day will be showcasing a wide variety of Border Collie activities, including sheep herding, tricks, flyball, agility, treibball, nose work, heelwork to music, obedience and frisbee. Treibball (pronounced try-ball) is an awesome new dog sport and is a fun game for dogs of any size or breed. Dogs learn to run around 8 large exercise balls, pushing the balls one at a time with their nose or shoulder straight into the goal as quickly as possible. Treibball promotes better teamwork and communication between dog and handler as they develop skills in distance work and impulse control. There will be stalls, show bags, fun competitions, photo opportunities and interactive activities. Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill are also out to find the fastest border collie over a sprint, racing against the clock. The day will also be raising money for Border Collie Cancer Research, with a huge raffle and lots of other fundraising activities. For more information: www.facebook.com/drkatrinawarren; www.facebook.com/thewonderdogs; www.thewonderdogs.com.au

The RSPCA Million Paws Walk is in its 20th year and is a great way to raise money for animals in need. Staff from the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital attended the Blue Mountains RSPCA Million Paws Walk at Katoomba on Sunday 18 May 2014 and had a great day out with their dogs and family members. Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital raised $730.00 online to support the RSPCA. Thank you to our generous supporters. The RSPCA is NOT an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community to continue it’s vital daily work. Along with shelters, volunteer branches and Inspectors, they also fund an education team that visits schools, universities and community groups to educate the importance of treating all living things with kindness. Thank you for making the RSPCA NSW your charity of choice.

Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.

5 Lifestyle Changes for Healthy Weight Loss!! Real weight loss comes with lasting, healthy lifestyle changes. Try to make the following changes over the next few weeks to see some great long lasting results. 1. TV Time: Swap the time you use to sit and watch your favourite shows for exercise. If you must watch, use the time to burn a few calories. Stand up and do some squats, lunges or sit-ups. 2. Sleep: Most adults need an average of eight hours of sleep each night. If you’re not getting adequate amounts of rest, you’re more likely to be hungry, overeat, and gain weight. 3. Drink Choices: If you’re one of the millions hooked on soft drinks, alcohol, or other sweetened beverages, your weight loss goals may remain out of reach until you replace these drinks with water. You should also know that your brain often confuses thirst with hunger, so at the first sign of hunger, grab a glass of water. 4. Breakfast: If you try cutting calories by skipping breakfast, you’ll be excessively hungry by mid-morning. As a result, the healthy calories you would have eaten at breakfast are replaced with calorie-filled snacks and an over-sized lunch. 5. Physical Activity: Weight loss is about burning more calories than you consume. Therefore, it makes sense that dieting and exercise must go hand in hand. The quickest and most permanent weight loss comes as a result of a combination of healthy eating and consistent, challenging workouts. I’m here to help you meet and maintain your fitness and weight loss goals. Call or email me today to get started on a fitness program that will get you on the fast track to your best body ever.
