FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday and 8am on the Fourth Sunday

In August there is the celebration of what is called the Transfiguration of Christ. The celebration goes back to the early fourth century in the eastern Churches and it began to be observed in the western Churches after the ninth century. It is interesting that in the Anglican prayer book of 1561 listed the celebration as minor but in many revisions of that book particularly the American prayer book of 1892 it was restored and remains as a major celebration. In the Gospel record both Saint Matthew and Saint Luke utilize Saint Mark’s record of the event. Total comprehension of the Transfiguration is difficult and even in the Gospel records St John, St Peter and St James who joined Jesus in prayer before the event were at a loss to fully understand what they had experienced. Looking back from our perspective its meaning can only begin to be understood within the final ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ. One of the most telling of interpretations of the Transfiguration is found in the New Testament written by Saint Paul in the third chapter of his second letter to the Church in ancient Corinth. But even this does not exhaust contemplation and meditation on its meaning. The Transfiguration came at an important time in the life and work of Jesus. His work in the ancient Roman Empire province of Galilee was completed. It is noted that to all appearances it had

failed! Primarily because the political and religious atmosphere of the time was centred and directed towards defeating the Roman Senate’s domination of the country. Expectation rested on a national ‘messiah’. Reaction to the life and work of Jesus culminated in his trial and execution. It was the twelve apostles that remained supportive yet even they did not fully understand what Jesus was on about for even St Peter had received criticism from Jesus for not fully appreciating the reason for his life and work. The Transfiguration then can be placed in the context that Jesus had to make a decision: to go on and complete his work resulting in suffering and humiliation or to give up. In the act of Transfiguration the three apostles realized that the Father was acting in the Son through the Holy Spirit to complete the promise of the Law received through Moses and the promise of the Prophets through Elias to obtain the continual reconciliation between the created and the Creator. Up Close & Personal with Brittanie The Voice Australia Contestant (Team Kylie) Age: 21 Where do you live? Mulgoa on a little farm with my Pa! How long have you been singing? Since I was six years old; I’ve always loved the greats, Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey, and Barbara Streisand. When did you discover you had a passion for singing, and a talent to accompany it? It’s just something I’ve always enjoyed, and so I do it! I’ve been very lucky to have the support of friends and family from the very beginning. Without them, I would never have gotten as far as I have in the industry. Describe your experience on The Voice Australia? It was like a very intense workshop; I learnt so much from Kylie and the coaches, but also from the producers and everyone behind the scenes. So much goes into a show as big as The Voice Australia! What are your plans and visions for the future? You have to be ready for every opportunity in this industry, particularly in Australia. But in the meantime, I will perform my Cabaret right around Australia, starting here in my local community first. Expect sparkles!

Shipway

Describe a typical day in the life of Brittanie Shipway after The Voice? My life is incredibly normal! The only difference is how busy I am; my phone never stops ringing or buzzing with emails. I’m essentially running my own business where the product is... Me! How strange... What have you learned from the experience, thus far? To keep pushing and working for what you want. Because at the end of the day, you are the one who has to live with your own decisions. Not the people who judge you! Who is your idol? My late Ma, Doreen Shipway. She was such an incredibly strong woman, who lived for others. And she was so wise! Any comments for the local community? All I can say is THANK YOU for the incredible support you’ve shown me since I was a little girl. I’ve loved every minute of living in such a beautiful community. Who needs city living?

Council Grants Wishes Penrith City Council is offering support to local non-profit community groups through small grants of up to $1200. The grants are available through Council’s Community Assistance Program (CAP) to support local community groups that provide services to residents in the Penrith Local Government Area. Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the grants will help community groups deliver valuable programs to those in the Penrith area. “The program offers small grants for non-profit community groups to use toward holding a community event, undertaking a special project or purchasing equipment, Cr Fowler said. “It can be tough financially in providing the services that many of the community groups offer. Mike Whitney Talks Tourism to Sydney’s Adventure Capital Well known travel program host Mike Whitney met with Penrith tourism operators at a networking event at Penrith Civic Centre in July. The former Australian one day and test cricketer hosts Sydney Weekender exploring travel destinations across NSW. The program, now in its 21st year, shows Whitney traversing the state profiling the best places to stay, eat and play. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said no one knows tourism in NSW like Mike Whitney. “Mike has travelled far and wide within the state showcasing many travel and tourist destinations. His knowledge of the tourism industry and what makes a great travel destination was welcomed by our own tourism operators,” Cr Fowler said. “Penrith is well established as an adventure destination where visitors can sky dive, go whitewater rafting, wakeboarding or get behind the controls of a jet aircraft. And soon adrenaline junkies will be able to race go-karts and participate in motorsport activities. “And there is so much more. Adventure is all about discovery. From the fire museum to the art gallery, award winning chocolate to great outdoor activities. Penrith has it all.” Whitney is no stranger to the attractions the adventure capital boasts, often visiting them during the course of filming Sydney Weekender. In June he tried his hand at indoor skydiving at Penrith’s latest attraction, iFly.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Standards I often wonder why adults have a one set of standards for themselves and another for the children. I recently observed a childcare worker yelling at a young fella because he was yelling at one of his playmates. It struck me as odd. If the young fella is not allowed to yell then why are you yelling at him? How did your yelling at him help him to learn how to do things differently? A parent in one of my parenting groups years ago, said “I hit the children for hitting each other, it doesn’t make any sense. Dr Magda Gerber said “YOU are what you teach your children. No truer words have been spoken. If your kids are yelling, swearing, getting angry where do they get the yelling/swearing/angry from? If they can’t tolerate frustration, who is role modelling that for them? And who is teaching them the alternative - how to calm and center themselves? Parents say to me that their kids don’t listen. I rather cheekily ask how much they listen to their children. Parents expect their children to jump up and do whatever they are asking them to do as soon as they ask it. But when you are sitting on the lounge watching your favourite TV show, or looking at Facebook, how quickly do you respond to your children’s requests? Parents expect their children to share. They rouse on the young one who won’t share his favourite truck. But if I asked to borrow your car how willingly would you hand over the keys? Adults aren’t that good at sharing so why should children be good at it, especially as they are egocentric and they really do think that the universe revolves around them. Being egocentric is developmental, it’s something that their brain controls, they actually can’t help it. They are not being ‘selfish’ to be nasty. If you have a house rule that food should only be eaten at the kitchen table, then are you following that rule too? The kids are looking at you, and pretty soon they learn what the word ‘hypocrite’ means. They will mutter under their breath that you don’t follow the ‘rules’ and then they will get into trouble for ‘back-chatting’ or being rude or not respecting their parents. When we make a mistake we pass it off as a mistake. When our child makes a mistake we say its “misbehaviour, “naughty, “seeking attention. I’m not suggesting that children be given free reign. Your job as a parent is to set the rules for acceptable behaviour, to establish the limits and boundaries. It is absolutely OK for you to set limits and boundaries. Some of the most extreme child behaviour I have ever seen has come from parents who are too scared to limit their child’s behaviour. It’s also your job to be a good role model. Fifty years of research has shown that the best child behaviour is a result of parenting that has a high level of warmth (care, nurture, fun, hugs, listening, attention), and a reasonable level of communicated expectations.

What’s Happening at ........................ Henry Fulton Public School ? The school holidays flew by this term and it is always great to see the eager faces of our students when they return on our first morning assembly after the holidays. Term 3 is always a busy time for us. This term we celebrate our annual Naidoc Day. This is always a great day at the school as the children participate in activities that highlight Aboriginal Culture. Our Athletics Carnival is on in Week 2, weather permitting. This is a fun day with families encouraged to attend. During the day there are lots of activities for the whole school from Kindergarten to Year 6, there is also a serious side to the day where our school athletics team to attend the district carnival are selected. On the day the older children participate in running events (100&200m), long jump. Discus, shot put and many other activities. This is an extremely busy term for our four dance troupes who will be performing at both the Cranebrook Learning Community Performing Arts Festival and the Lower Blue Mountains Nepean Dance Festival at the Joan Sutherland centre. Our Choir will also be performing along with our school band this term. All this will be happening while our students continue to achieve their usual high levels in their learning. From the Principal’s Desk...Llandilo Public School

We Play Here, and Here and Here…

Welcome back to Term 3. It promises to be a very busy term at Llandilo PS with many fantastic learning opportunities on offer to our students. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Ms Joan Smyth and I have been appointed as the Acting Principal of Llandilo P.S. for Terms 3 and 4. You can probably look upon me as the ‘caretaker’ of Llandilo PS until the substantive position has been filled in readiness for Term 1 2015. I am delighted to be part of the Llandilo community and I look forward to meeting as many parents and community members as possible. Feel free to call in for a chat. The annual Athletics Carnival was held in the first week back and it was a wonderful day for all concerned. The students performed to the best of their ability and participated in many events. We had great support from parents, grandparents and community members despite the cold, blustery weather and the staff did a magnificent job. Many students will now represent our school at the District Carnival, which is due to be held in Week 6. We will also be implementing a Pre-school Early Learning Program (PELL) from Wednesday 13th August until Wednesday 5th November. Each session will run from 12.00 – 1.00pm. The program has been developed to support children in their transition to Kindergarten. It will complement our Kindergarten orientation sessions, which will be held later on in Term 4. If your child is ready to start school in 2015 and you are interested in this program, please contact the school office on 4777 4124. Joan Smyth, Acting Principal

Several exciting new playgrounds will be installed across the City in coming months. Six playgrounds will be upgraded with the latest, contemporary equipment in St Clair, Emu Heights, Erskine Park, Cranebrook (two), and Jamisontown as part of Council’s forward works programs. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said kids deserved the best play equipment Council could provide and our programs had seen nine playgrounds replaced in the past year alone. “In the coming financial year, another six playgrounds are being upgraded to include the latest in safe and creative play space design,” Cr Fowler said. One of the new playgrounds will be at the Jamison Road end of Tench Reserve, and because people come from across the city to visit the river, Council is asking the wider community what they’d like to see there. “Tench Reserve is very popular with families and can get very busy, particularly on weekends,” Cr Fowler said. “We’re replacing the older of two playgrounds with new equipment positioned closer to Jamison Road which will provide an alternative to the main playground and complement the bbqs and seating already there. “The community told us reinvigorating the public space around the River was a key aspiration when we developed the Our River Masterplan last year and a key principles was to develop a more active and vibrant river,” Cr Fowler said. “New play equipment will provide a fun and inviting way for our younger residents to enjoy the river.”

Building or Renovating? Building or renovating is a great way to achieve the house you desire. You have the freedom to add quality craftsmanship and the design features that you and your family will value. Creative projects like these are both exciting and stressful. Many new home owners and upgraders look at the benefits of purchasing a house and land package. Not only do you need the right loan features to save financially and have greater control of your project, you need the right advice on how the loan is to be considered by your lender. There are generally two scenarios when applying for finance. Scenario 1 You have the option to purchase a parcel of land with agreed building plans. You enter into a single contract for their purchase that settles on completion of the house and we call this a house and land package. In this instance the builder is the owner of the land. When the lender assesses this type of contract, the loan is calculated on the value at completion and is settled in a single transaction similar to a normal house purchase. Most lenders will require council stamped plans, a fixed price building contract and a certificate of currency of the builder’s insurance policy. Scenario 2 You have the option to purchase a parcel of land and you may or may not have building plans available at that time. You enter into a contract for the purchase of the land and a separate construction contract for the building of the house. In this instance the vendor of the land may be different to the builder. You will need two different types of funding: the first for the land purchase and the second as a construction loan. There will be separate settlements for each. In relation to the construction loan you will be required to draw down the loan in instalments to make progress payments as significant milestones in the construction are achieved. Understanding Progress Payments Typically, a build from start to finish encompasses anywhere from three to six significant stages. These stages could include pouring the foundations, erecting the framework, roofing, lock up, fitout and completion. To commence the building process you will generally be required to pay an initial deposit and then as building progresses you will be required to make additional payments as each stage is completed. These additional payments are

commonly referred to as progress payments. It is important to make these payments in order for the builder to progress with the following stage. You will most likely be paying the progress payments with funds drawn against your construction loan. Accordingly over time the amount owed under your construction loan will grow with the interest payments associated with the loan. Please note: Building/construction loans aren’t generally available for renovations unless they are significantly structural and with a fixed price build contract (for example adding another level or extension to your existing home). For a kitchen or bathroom renovation you would typically use your existing equity. Budgeting for the Associated Costs of Building a Home When it comes to choosing finance to build or renovate your new home, there are a number of associated costs to consider. You will need to factor in stamp duty (on the mortgages AND on the transfer of the property or land), legal costs, insurance, surveys and searches, inspections, council rates and how progress payments are to be made. Other costs you may incur are rent and moving costs (if you have to rent while your new home is being built) and landscaping expenses after the building is complete if they were not included in your contract. Your state stamp duty office can provide information on how much stamp duty you have to pay, how it is calculated and if you are entitled to a rebate, exemption or deferred payment. Better still, we are always happy to provide this information for you - simply call the office. Important note: Scenario 1 is long term off the plan so usually carries far more risk than scenario 2 as banks will usually only approve finance for six months. If the project takes longer and there are changes to your financial position in the meantime, you may not be able to settle the finance. In this event, you could lose between 10-30% or more of the project cost so make sure you discuss this risk and its management with your broker and solicitor. With so much to think about, it’s important to have the correct loan to suit your project. Be sure to engage the professional services of a finance specialist like ourselves before entering into any contract with a builder. * Disclaimer: This article is generic in nature. All investment decisions should be considered wisely and based on your personal and financial circumstances. Seek proper advice before committing to any course of investment action. This is not deemed as advice.

Spring is Just Around the Corner The frosty mornings and the cool winds are letting us now that winter is here, however the lovely sunny days are also a reminder that spring is just around the corner. For most of us that is a nice feeling which we all look forward to, but for others it means exposure to dusts and pollens which can bring on some unpleasant symptoms. Watery eyes, dripping noses, headaches, foggy thinking and a heavy feeling in your head can be quite uncomfortable. Imbalances within your energy system, or meridian system, can add to this discomfort. Clearing the blockages and balancing the meridian system can often give you relief from these symptoms, allowing you to enjoy various activities, which you may normally have to forgo. Kinesiology, EFT and Acupressure are simple, non-invasive, harmless but effective alternative therapies which work with the energy system to restore balance and harmony within the body. Using a combination of these therapies can result in reducing the spring time symptoms as mentioned. It is usually recommended that you avoid the pollens and dusts responsible for the symptoms for a couple of days after the therapy. Obviously once spring is here, that is difficult. Now is a good time to address these issues, before the onset of the new season. Your health and well being is your responsibility. Take action now and live life to the fullest.

JORDAN SPRINGS RESIDENT GROUP UPDATE Recently, the Jordan Springs Resident Group conducted a survey regarding a safety and noise barrier along the Jordan Springs side of the Northern Road. A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise e awareness and money for the RSPCA. We are hosting a Cupcake Day att Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on n Monday 18th August 2014 between n 9am-7pm. Pop in to enjoy a cupcake (or two!) and even a ‘pupcake’ for your beloved pet. We have made ‘pupcakes’ which are dog friendly and do not contain any chocolate which is toxic to dogs. If you are unable to make it here on the day, then you can still contribute to the RSPCA via an online donation. https://rspcacupcakedaynsw2014.everydayhero.com/au/orchardhillsveterinaryhospital. The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.
