Hayden and his Super Boot 5-year-old Hayden Williamson from Llandilo may have only just started his first season of soccer, but already the Cranebrook United Football Club player is keeping the scorer’s busy each game. The prolific goal scoring youngster has amassed 34 goals in just 4 games, including a 10-goal haul in his very first game earlier this year. Playing for the Under 5 Numbats team this season, Hayden is following in his older brother’s footsteps with Mason lacing up the boots for the Cranebrook United Football Club Under 7’s and Blake for the Mount Druitt Rangers Under 9’s. “Hayden has grown up watching his brothers play soccer his whole life. It’s always been his dream to play” said Kiera Williamson, Hayden’s Mum. The pocket rocket is a natural at the game and he is already possessing skills that you might find in an older player. His family puts this down to his constant practicing and love of the game. “He’s a very determined kid. Always practicing. When he’s not with his teammates training, he’s at home running around with a soccer ball with his brothers” Kiera explained. Away from the soccer pitch, Hayden enjoys watching his favourite teams Barcelona and Arsenal play. So, what is it like to be a soccer mum to three boys, with all the training and games each week? “Being a soccer mum to three boys is crazy, but we absolutely love it. To see all the joy that it brings and the smiles on their faces, whilst they get to play with their friends for fitness is wonderful. With the pandemic, we’re not too sure how many games they will play and how the season will go. We’re just grateful for the opportunities they get to play the sport they enjoy right now” ended Kiera. v Hayden in his Cranebrook United Football Club kit | Image: Kiera Williamson

Locals Building a Better Neighbourhood
There is nothing more empowering for a community than when they come together for a common cause. When that cause is all about connecting and informing people so that they feel safe and secure, then you have something special. This can be said for Neighbourhood Watch Ropes Crossing. The local group, which was formed in May 2018 with 55 members, has grown to 80 including over 2,000 on their Facebook page. “The group was formed after a local member of the community had their car stolen. Collectively, we were able to recover the car. It showed that by helping one another, we could work to prevent crime, keep the community safe and to build awareness” said Mitch Keyes, Neighbourhood Watch Ropes Crossing President to the Jordan Springs Gazette. Working alongside the NSW Police Mount Druitt LAC, the group normally meet once a month at the Ropes Crossing Community Hub. However, due to the current pandemic, they have been meeting individually with respect to social distancing. In their relatively short time together, they have already made a huge impact in Ropes Crossing. This has included meet and greets with both residents and Prue Car MP (Member for Londonderry), BBQ’s as well as steering the Government’s Be Connected program, assisting elderly residents at a local retirement village, and empowering them with digital technology training. This was thanks to funding of $1,000 that was received from Neighbourhood Watch Australasia in 2019. Following up was a Government Grant of $25,000 as part of the My Community Project, which will see the funds used on local ideas and initiatives. The group’s achievement was thanks to online voting from the public and further demonstrated their support. A major community fun day is being planned for later in the year. It will be a great opportunity for local families to come together and to meet the committee and members. There will be a ‘Crime Trail’ Treasure Hunt, where teams will be encouraged to come in fancy dress, with the ‘Crime’ theme and will feature a prize for Best Dressed. At the end of the Treasure Hunt will be a BBQ and it is hoped members of the NSW Police, SES and RFS will be in attendance for children to meet and interact with. To become a member of the group, you must be a current resident of Ropes Crossing. Members will be verified prior to joining their Facebook page. Got a fussy eater?
The very best way to deal with eating difficulties is not to stress about it. Look at the positive. Rather than focusing on what he doesn’t eat, focus on what he does eat, and expand his range and variety ever so slowly. Look upon it in the spirit of adventure rather than with fear and dread. The mirror neurons in your child’s brain will pick up on your attitude and feelings. If you have anxiety about mealtimes, your child will smell the fear and respond accordingly. If he gets a lot of attention for his fussy eating, he will do more of it. One strategy is the back-up meal (Dr Thomas Phelan). You give your child tiny portions of the family meal. A teaspoon of everything, separated from each other on a small plate. The child must try what was on the plate. He can eat what he wants and leave what he wants, but he must give it a bit of a go. If he likes some of it, he can have more. Give descriptive praise for what he tries and eats. When he has had enough of that meal, if he is still hungry, he can ask for his back-up meal. The criteria for the back-up meal is that it is quick and simple to prepare, and somewhat nutritious. It could be as simple as a peanut butter sandwich or tinned spaghetti on toast. You don’t give descriptive praise if the child eats the back-up meal. This strategy can take a long while. Most of parenting is slow and consistent. When I tell people about the above strategy, they are concerned about the child “winning”. I advise parents to never start a war with their child over food – you will not win. The back-up meal is a positive way to increase your child’s tolerance for different tastes. If you would like more information, look up the Fussy Eating Resources on the Cancer Council NSW website. Also look up Dr Ellyn Satter’s ‘division of responsibility’ model. r

Blacktown City Council is calling on all green thumbed residents, in the search for the city’s best gardens. Entries have now opened in the 2020 Blacktown City Garden Competition. Entries will be assessed on design, construction, maintenance, and sustainability. The final round of judging by industry experts will be conducted in late September. Concept Design Brings Penrith’s City Park to Life A vibrant, contemporary, and green open space in the heart of Penrith’s City Centre is one step closer to being realised with the delivery of the concept design for City Park. The concept design was informed by the ideas and input provided by the community during consultation last year and responds to their main request to bring nature into the city centre. Key features include a variety of large trees to provide shade, a sensory garden, several water features, as well as natural landscaping to transform the space into an urban retreat. The concept design also provides space for people to meet, eat, be active and celebrate together with these aspects set to stimulate the day and nighttime economy by attracting residents, visitors, and investors. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the delivery of the concept design is an important milestone in this project and offers an exciting glimpse into the future of Penrith’s new city park. “Council has been working with the community on this project for a number of years and it is wonderful to see our shared vision for City Park starting to take shape” Cr Fowler said. “The concept design for City Park showcases elements for cooling the city through smart technology, creative design and natural landscaping to create an iconic destination within the City Centre that we can all be proud of. “City Park will unlock the City Centre precinct to major opportunities and alongside other city-shaping projects such as Soper Place, Regatta Park, Gipps Street Recreation Precinct, will strengthen Penrith’s position as Western Sydney’s most liveable city”. The detailed design of City Park is progressing over the coming months and further community consultation will take place in late 2020. Construction is due to start in late 2021 and the project set to be complete by early 2023. View the concept design and find out more at penrith.city/citypark. r The concept design for City Park delivers on the community’s aspirations for the space to be a natural retreat in the City Centre | Image: Penrith City Council

Puppy Preschool We will be restarting Puppy Preschool in August 2020. We had cancelled puppy preschool due to the Coronavirus crisis. Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital's Puppy Preschool Course offers new puppy owners upto-date information on training and behaviour, with a focus on using positive reinforcement and force-free methods of training. This means you can not only train your dog to be the best companion, but do so in a way that makes it enjoyable for both you and them!! Why use positive reinforcement methods? Positive reinforcement involves rewarding your dog for good behaviour, so that it is more likely to occur again. It is the most humane method of training, and has also been scientifically proven to be the most effective. Using these methods will also strengthen the bond between you and your dog. Dogs are social animals, and want nothing more than to be a part of the family. Starting their training from an early age will help to make sure that they are the company that every family member wants! Puppies aged between the ages of 8-14 weeks with a minimum of one vaccination can be enrolled. The course duration is 5 weeks and spots are limited, so please call us on (02) 4736 2027 to find out more. For more information check out our Facebook, website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027. r

Pedestrian Hit by Charged – Llandilo
Car;
Man
He was granted conditional bail and appeared before Penrith Local Court on Tuesday 14 July 2020.
A driver has been charged after a pedestrian was struck by a car in Sydney’s west recently. About 10.50pm (Saturday 20 June 2020), emergency services were called to Fifth Avenue, Llandilo, about 10km north east of Penrith, after reports a man was allegedly struck by a Ford Focus while walking down the street. The 41-year-old pedestrian suffered head and leg injuries and was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition. Officers from Nepean Police Area Command established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist police from the Crash Investigation Unit. The provisional driver, a 19-year-old man, was subjected to a roadside breath test, which returned a negative result. He was arrested and taken to Nepean Hospital for mandatory testing before being taken to Penrith Police Station. Following inquiries, the Emu Heights man was charged with dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm (drive manner dangerous) and negligent driving (occasioning grievous bodily harm). His licence was also suspended.
Teen Charged after $1 Million Fire Damage to Llandilo House

Technology in the last 60 years or so has made interaction amongst people to be rapid. The downside is that this interaction can be flouted and used to manipulate, using one aspect of human nature: fear. So often in history have we seen fear being used as a political and religious tool and sadly today people use it as a powerful force. What is also sad is that the wonderful technology is used not to engender rational conversation and action but rather to evoke irrational bias and behaviour. Take the sad and shocking murder by a police officer of a citizen in the USA, which has resulted in bringing racism with all its ugliness to the fore. Or, consider the ‘blame game’ that is evident in so much conversation on the virus pandemic. What is certain is that all this exposes the reality that human behaviour and human thought, which can produce so much marvellous technology allowing for almost instant communication, also shows the downside of human behaviour and thought. It was a Jewish Rabbi from Nazareth some 2000 years ago who came to be recognised as the incarnate Son of God. That called for repentance: to think again, to think and act within the realisation that God’s rule is effective and that once our weakness [Scripture calls it sin] is recognised, it can be overcome by the power of God’s Spirit if we allow it to do so. Thus, interaction and communication between individuals and indeed nations, can be placed based on rational thought and behaviour motivated by the appeal to common good and not on selfishness. History has proved, and today’s world still indicates that this is a lesson still to be adopted, although within history there has been encouraging events as life evolves towards the final consummation when God’s rule will be universal in human thought and behaviour.
A teenage girl has been charged after a house was destroyed by fire in Sydney’s west last month. Emergency services were called to Fifth Avenue, Llandilo, about 3.30pm (Sunday 5 July 2020), where they found a home well alight. The blaze was extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW; however, the home was destroyed, with the damage valued at $1 million. No injuries were reported. Officers from Nepean Police Area Command established a crime scene and commenced an investigation into the fire. A 15-year-old girl was arrested at the scene just after 4pm and taken to Penrith Police Station. Detectives have charged the girl with damage property by fire more than $15000 (DV) and destroy or damage property (between $2000 and $5000). The girl was refused bail and appeared before a Children’s Court (Monday 6 July 2020).
What's Happening @
Jordan Springs Probus Club At the time of writing, the club has just enjoyed its first Tuesday lunch for several months. A group of 20 members gathered at O’Donoghues Irish Pub in Emu Plains for an enjoyable lunch and general catch-up, social distancing permitting. We are hopeful of COVID conditions not worsening and allowing for an August lunch. Community Halls have slightly relaxed restrictions on numbers, and we have planned for a recommencement of monthly meetings in August, with the next scheduled date being the 4th Tuesday. Our major challenge will be re-establishing the featured speakers for the remainder of the year. The committee continues to plan for the eventual lifting/ relaxing of restrictions and the return to a more normal monthly agenda. This ensures members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance, developing new interests and staying active. Future planned events for the coming twelve months will include Watsons Bay for lunch, Mudgee Getaway Cottages (4 nights), Bundeena Ferry and lunch, Camden Historic Tour (coach) and planning is continuing towards an interstate trip. The Jordan Springs Probus Club normally meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month, at 9:30am for a 10:00am start. OK August... be kind! July brought with it a degree of uncertainty as we continue on through this COVID chapter of our ‘new look’ lives. Many have commented that we have taken two steps forward and four steps backward. It’s more important than ever to observe, learn and follow the rules. Keep your distance and wash, wash, wash your hands. Take care and remain vigilant for those around you, particularly those that are in known high-risk communities. Here at the District Gazette ‘We Live.Love. Local’ and take great pride in sharing stories that are local and relatable. We’re reaching out to (you) our readers for YOUR good news story. Do you have a story to share? A great achievement, a milestone, an accomplishment against all odds (during COVID)? An interesting career, a rare find, a talent, an unusual skill or hobby? We’d love to share your story, it might be exactly what our readers need to hear or know. Each month we receive a tonne of feedback which always puffs up our collars.... just like this one from Alison “It’s so nice to see the inclusion of Kid’s Corner in the Gazette!”..... aww thanks Alison, we’re glad you like our new look puzzle pages!
