Carter Brightens the Day

Time at home during school holidays and in lockdown was boring. It was also a time to express yourself and to show your creativity and that is just what 6-year-old Carter Williams did! Armed with a box of coloured chalk and a wild imagination, the Ropes Crossing kindergarten student began creating a giant mural on his driveway for the community to admire whilst they were passing by. Carter decided that being at home was hard and he wanted to give something back. “Carter originally drew the solar system with chalk on the driveway and then, the next day he wanted to draw his two football teams. He created his favourite player Nathan Cleary first and then Viliame Kikau. He saw that there was lots of space and just kept going! Carter spent about an hour, which is an eternity for a 6-year-old and was just so happy and engaged, he didn’t realise” explained Kristy Williams, Carter’s Mum. “It was bright and happy to cheer them up,” he smiled. The budding young artist hopes that his pavement art will rub off on others, where they too can create their own rainbows of colour for others to enjoy. “He even had the idea that he wanted to cheer up the residents of the retirement village with some bright pictures” Kristy replied. Carter has this message for anyone else wanting to brighten their driveways, “Just try your best and be creative. It doesn’t matter if you go out of the lines, it will make people happy to see what you draw”. r

Cranebrook Cricket Club has competed in local competitions since the mid 1990’s and is the most established cricket club in the North Penrith area. The club caters for boys and girls from ages 4+, whilst the senior teams cater for ages 16+. Last season, the club fielded two master blasters teams, four junior teams, three senior teams, as well as running two successful junior blasters programs. The competitions are played throughout the wider Penrith District; however, the club conducts regular training for their teams and runs blaster programs at Cranebrook Oval in Cranebrook. In season 2020/21, cricketers were lucky enough to enjoy a full season, albeit under strict COVID guidelines and the club had all three senior teams qualify for the semi-final. However, two of the teams were eliminated due to adverse weather but fortunately the 9th grade team progressed and were competition winners. Whilst three of their four junior sides played noncompetitive games, the club has many talented junior players, with seven players gaining representative selection this season. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, the club continues to offer junior blasters, master blasters, junior and senior cricket. They are excited to announce that they’ve added an all-girls program to the list of current programs offered and they look to field junior sides in all age groups as well as 3+ teams in the seniors. They are looking forward to the upcoming 2021/22 season and are offering the communities of Jordan Springs, Llandilo and Ropes Crossing a well-established inclusive cricket club that offers all participants the opportunity to enjoy the game of cricket.

Is Your Child Highly Sensitive? Is your child easily overwhelmed? Does your youngster find life changes particularly challenging? Would you describe your son or daughter as “shy” or “cautious”? Is he or she sensitive to bright lights or loud noises? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, then you may have a highly sensitive child. Some children are born more sensitive than others. We don’t know why but researchers think it could be linked to individual differences in the brain and sensory processing system. Highly sensitive children are very “tuned in” to what they can hear, see, smell, taste, or touch. They also tend to experience emotions at a more intense level and for longer periods of time. High sensitivity is a personality trait that researchers estimate affects between 12 – 15% of the general population. While being highly sensitive can create difficulties in life, these types of children can do well with a little extra TLC and understanding from their caregivers. Highly sensitive kids have many gifts to share with the world, including creativity, compassion, innovative problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and an extraordinary aptitude for deep thinking and reflection. You help your highly sensitive child shine by following some of these tips: 1. Support them to see their sensitivity in a positive light. 2. Convey confidence that they are strong enough to deal with what is ahead. 3. Provide opportunities for creative expression such as art making or writing. 4. Support them to move outside their comfort zone in small, manageable steps. 5. Expect them to take a little longer to adjust to changes in their life. 6. Help them use their sensory system as a tool for calm by identifying soothing things they can see, hear, touch, and feel when they are distressed. Examples may include white noise, soft blankets or toys, or images of nature. If you are interested in learning more about supporting highly sensitive children, check out the writing of Dr Elaine Aron on hsperson.com and Dr Deborah McNamara on mcnamara.ca.

Happiness Rocks, a new rock painting group, is taking the community by storm. The popular group was formed locally, with one of its creators coming from right here in Jordan Springs. The group was started in May this year by Nic McIntyre and Dani Barenyi on Facebook. With over 500 members and growing, they have already added a moderator (Stacey) to help them, particularly through lockdown. “We decided to start a group that was not bound by one specific area. With rock groups active all over the world, it would be amazing to see one of your creations travel interstate and hopefully when it’s possible, even further! Happiness Rocks currently has over 500 members, which is incredible considering it is so new. Both Dani and I are so excited to see how far we go, as we even had 200 join us in one week alone” stated Nic. Nic and Dani could not be any happier, with all the positive stories and messages that have been shared about Happiness Rocks. “Some great positives to come out of this are that there are families that are enjoying the group. They are painting rocks together for the simple reason of bringing some happiness into a random stranger’s day, which is absolutely beautiful in lockdown. It also gives both adults and kids something to look forward to whilst they are out on their daily walk” Nic explained. She continued, “Now more than ever, we need groups that bring positivity to our lives and that’s what Happiness Rocks is all about! We often hear how a particular rock has completely changed a person’s day. The gorgeous, lit up faces of little ones posting their finds just absolutely makes my heart melt”. They have big plans for the future and hope to continue to spread the happiness. “We plan on taking Happiness Rocks to as far as we can reach. We are already covering areas we had never expected and look forward to the day one of our creations find its way into another country! As we move out of lockdown, we plan on holding rock “events”, where we collectively paint a theme and invite others to join us in painting and going for a hunt. I am so excited to see where the future takes us” finished Nic. For more information, search Happiness Rocks on Facebook. r

Calling all Minecraft Fans World of Minecraft is a new place where children aged 5-12 years come together and learn how to code, play, and complete challenges in Minecraft. The popular Minecraft Camps will be returning to Jordan Springs in September, after previously selling out in April. They run two types of programs – Minecraft Club and Minecraft Camps. Minecraft Club is a weekly program, where students attend class for 1 hour a week and learn a new piece of code that is aligned with the school curriculum. Minecraft Camps are either 1 or 2 day events (depending on location) where students participate individually and in groups to complete challenges, learn how to embed code into their work as well as participate in a range of activities. “Minecraft is more than just a game. There are so many layers to Minecraft which is what makes it so popular. As a teacher, I have been able to use Minecraft Education in classrooms to help students learn about so many concepts as there is so much math and literacy built into it. Minecraft permits children (and adults) to play individually or collaboratively and be as imaginative as possible within it. There are no boundaries” said Noelene Callaghan of World of Minecraft. Minecraft Camp will be coming to Jordan Springs Community Centre on 27-28 September 2021. The two days go from 9:00am to 3:00pm and they run like a school day. All students need to bring is their recess and lunch and a device that has any version of Minecraft (Java edition or Education edition). The last camp at Jordan Springs in the April school holidays sold out). “The kids absolutely loved the two days and were completely engaged throughout their time. We cater for all children aged 5-12 years old as well as children with special needs” Noelene replied. World of Minecraft accept the Creative Kids Vouchers that can be obtained from Service NSW. The upcoming Minecraft Camp at Jordan Springs is $150 for 2 days. Information about their curriculum, camps, clubs, and enrolments can be found at www.worldofminecraft.com.au or find them on Facebook @ WorldofMinecraftNSW. Dates of camps and classes are subject to Government COVID restrictions at the time. r Group of students with Minecraft Mentor - Noelene Callaghan at Jordan Springs Minecraft Camp, April 2021 | Image: World of Minecraft

HEALTH MATTERS

Blood Zinc Level - Is it Really a Good Measure of Zinc Deficiency? A nutrition patient attended our clinic recently with numerous symptoms. This included reflux, oesophageal inflammation and mucus accumulations, chronic sore mouth and throat, taste and voice changes, difficulty breathing, dry eyes, continual anxiety and agitation, mild depression, inability to exercise, severe insomnia and daytime fatigue, low lymphocytes, dry-eye, and significant weight-loss. Medical investigations had been unable to determine any cause. The patient admitted to having a strict vegan diet for some years, in an attempt to improve previously diabetic blood sugar levels. Veganism, however, significantly increases risk of zinc deficiency. Even so, research shows that 66-90% adults today have inadequate zinc intake with wide-ranging health effects. Many of the symptoms exhibited by this patient are associated with inadequate systemic zinc yet blood-serum-zinc levels were normal. Could this patient have a normal serum zinc but still have zinc deficiency? Reduced or altered taste sensation is an indicator zinc deficiency. In 2004, researchers divided patients with taste impairments into two groups based on whether their bloodserum-zinc levels were normal or low. They compared them to volunteers with normal taste-sensation, additionally using an

alternative test (the ‘apo-ACE/holo-ACE’ ratio) to determine zinc sufficiency/deficiency of all participants. In a further study, all patients with taste-sensation changes were then given zinc supplements. All patients had significant improvements in taste-sensation and this improvement correlated with improved ACE ratio, but not with blood-serum zinc levels. Researchers concluded that ‘zinc deficiency is a predominant factor underlying taste impairment and ACE ratio may be a more sensitive indicator of zinc nutrition than blood-serum-zinc concentration’. In short, serum-zinc-level which is the main test currently used in clinical practice is a poor tool for determining zinc deficiency. With the approval of the patient’s general practitioner, the patient’s dietary pattern was changed to one that provided excellent levels of all important nutrients (including zinc). They were given some supplements to help correct key nutrient deficits quickly, and symptoms resolved over the next 3 months. If you have a chronic condition that you’ve had difficulty resolving, feel free to give the clinic a call.

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday

Church worship has been a constant during the past 2,000 plus years. As in the past so too today, there is a variation in acts of worship. These variations, however, have a common denominator: to pray and praise and more importantly to do what Jesus the Christ expects of us: ‘the breaking of bread’. In this the life, death, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus is recalled and in ‘breaking the bread’ the spiritual sustenance is given to the worshipper. Surrounding ‘the breaking of bread’ with whatever variety of worship, there are four basic requirements. First is preparation: to discipline the self to be still and wind down from everyday thought. Simply to wait on God. Second is to practice the recognition that we are who we are and in being honest with ourselves, we recognize our strength and weakness. The third is trust: it is through the Holy Trinity that we have the freedom ‘to be’, not in conformity to self, but in conformity to living that enhances and to appreciating the wonderful universe in which we live. The fourth is giving: Jesus the Christ before his execution did not preach a sermon. He invited his followers to a meal, the sacred ‘breaking of bread’ that has ever since been a constant in worship. It is when we participate in the meal and honestly reflect, the result is that we are motivated, not by self, but that in all things (thoughts, words, actions) we do it in Christ. Now life is short, with few making it to a hundred years in age and life is a learning process that cannot ignore the spiritual dimension. That is why the sacred meal will always remain a constant - we in ourselves sharing and living Jesus’ Passion.

With over 35,000 followers, Memories of Penrith and Surrounding Suburbs on Facebook is one of the most popular local groups on social media. The historical group shares pictures and stories of a bygone era and was created by Graham Chapman. “Our Facebook page started in 2013, after I had spent a few weeks searching the internet for old photos of where I grew up. It was the fastest growing Facebook page in the history of our region with over 10,000 followers in less than 36 hours. I’ve never seen anything like it. I would reset the page every 10 minutes and there were hundreds more following the page. I knew at that time I was onto something special,” said Graham. He believes the reason for the group’s popularity and why it’s so engaging with the community is simple. “People love looking back. It doesn’t matter how old they are or what their era was. I look back on an era where Penrith was still a big country town. I love when we post pictures and people immediately start sharing their stories and their memories. We have people on our site from most countries in the world all staying connected with their childhood” Graham explained. Graham was raised in Llandilo and it’s still a place that is quite close to his heart. “I grew up in the small community of Llandilo, at a time when everyone knew their neighbours. There wasn’t a lot of traffic, and the roads were mostly all dirt. I remember when we got our first streetlight at an intersection. The school had 42 kids and be home by sunset was the usual parental call. Llandilo was an awesome place to grow up, it was a real community” he said. “I watched as my father went off to fight in the 1978 Blue Mountains bushfires and I stayed at home. The ash was falling across Llandilo and before I knew it, I was fighting grass fires with hessian bags and buckets of water to protect my home” Graham continued. Away from managing the Memories of Penrith and Surrounding Suburbs site, Graham has successfully run his tourism business, Blue Mountains Tours since 2017. “It’s been a tough couple of years since the pandemic hit, however we are hanging in there. Our tours of the Blue Mountains were reliant on international tourists, so we aren’t expecting that to recommence until international borders re-open. We have managed to diversify, and we also now run camping at Mogo Wildlife Park on the South Coast. It’s a long way to travel for work but it’s something that just has to be done” he ended.

RSPCA Cupcake Day Grab your apron and preheat those ovens – Cupcake Day is returning on Monday 16th August. Each year, more than 124,000 animals turn to the RSPCA looking for help. This year, you and your utensils have the power to serve up love, care and forever homes to each and every one. Whether you’re whipping up doughnuts, lamingtons, brownies or traditional cupcakes, the funds you raise at your Cupcake Day event help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals in need all over the country. Invite your workmates, schoolmates and regular mates along for a sweet-tastic, slobber-filled gathering. With a pinch of community and a cup of good conversation, your Cupcake Day event has the potential to bake real change. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus crisis, we will not be hosting a Cupcake Day this year. So sad! We will have to eat all of the cupcakes ourselves!! We have a fundraiser page on the RSPCA website for online donations. We will match all donations that we receive!! So bake away and donate to the RSPCA. https://www.rspcacupcakeday.com.au/fundraisers/ camillebrandt Share some of your photos on our Facebook page of your baking successes, masterpieces and failures!!! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection.

The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work. Go to the RSPCA website for more information, https://www. rspcacupcakeday.com.au/

PAWGUST by Guide Dogs Australia PAWGUST is a fundraiser that encourages people and their pooches to brave the cold and walk or run at least 30 minutes every day in August to raise funds for Guide Dogs. The funds you raise during PAWGUST will go towards helping breed, raise and train Guide Dogs so that we can create a world where everyone who needs a Guide Dog, has a Guide Dog. It costs in excess of $50,000 to breed, raise and train just one Guide Dog puppy and with hundreds being trained each year, every dollar raised throughout PAWGUST counts. PAWGUST participants (and their dog/s) will experience physical and mental health benefits from the challenge - leading to happier, healthier lives. Staying Fit During Lockdown One of the biggest challenges when in lockdown during the pandemic has been exercise. Restrictions have meant that gyms have been unable to open, and we have not been able to train outside of home with family and friends. Jordan Springs personal trainer, Andrea Hosny of Unique Bodz, has some tips to help us stay fit and healthy at home. There are basic exercises that can be done from the comfort of your home that will assist with your fitness. “Body weight squats, body weight lunges, pushups, sit-ups, tricep dips, high knees (marching on the spot) and planks from knees to toes are great exercises to start with” said Andrea. It’s important to keep your mind positive and your body healthy during lockdown. “Exercise is vital for your wellbeing. It reduces the risk of health conditions, stress levels and anxiety. It helps to

give you a better quality sleep and controls weightloss” she said. “Make time for yourself to participate in exercise, even if it is only 15 minutes a day. Try exercising first thing in the morning. Stick to a routine with your fitness and make a plan. If you are working from home, allow time to get up and do some light exercises daily. Finally, go for a walk, enjoy some yoga or basic stretches” Andrea continued. Andrea has been working in the fitness industry for the past 9 years and she enjoys helping her clients change their lives. “Working in this industry for me is very rewarding. It is something that I am passionate about. I strive to improve my client’s fitness and they gain back their confidence. The goal is to assist people with changing their lives and making them feel better about themselves” she ended. r Andrea Hosny | Image Supplied

Last month at this time, we were in the early days of the lockdown announced across Greater Sydney. I spoke about Winter being the ideal time to hibernate and catch up on your Netflix list enjoying delicious winter-rich meals and staying toasty by the heater. And here we are (as I write this) almost a month later, and I’ve all but exhausted my Netflix list and moved onto Stan. I’ve picked a few good books to catch up on some well overdue ‘reading’ time and in a Covid safe manner, set about hitting my daily exercise goals. As a family we’ve used this time to explore new and interesting things to do, including online cooking and art classes. It’s been a great opportunity to catch up on all those long overdue sorting and organising tasks that we never have time to do. Take each day as it comes. Times are tough for many. Try to draw on the positives. We will get through this. ‘Life is not about being rich, being popular, being educated or being perfect. It’s about being real, humble and kind’ remember that. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
