Council Welcomes Draft Lakes Vision Plan Penrith City Council has welcomed the State Government’s launch of community consultation into the Draft Vision Plan for the Penrith Lakes Parkland. For many years Council has been an advocate to see the Penrith Lakes site transform into the Penrith Lakes Parkland. “The potential for recreation, leisure and tourism in the Penrith Lakes Parkland will add a rich dimension to the growing attraction Penrith already holds for almost 1.3 million annual visitors,” Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said. “The Sydney International Regatta Centre and the Penrith Whitewater Stadium are already major drawcards to our region hosting national and international events and profiling Penrith on the world stage.” “Penrith City Council has long held a vision for Penrith Lakes to become a principal destination for employment, quality housing, community facilities and recreation. “This is the most significant development ever in Penrith. The Lakes are the jewel in our City’s crown and I urge the community to respond to the government’s call for consultation.” “It’s not often we get the opportunity to help shape our city in such a significant way and I urge all residents to start the new year by taking an interest in this project and being a part of this great development.” The draft vision plan will inform and guide the future planning of Penrith Lakes Parkland precincts. Consultation will continue until April 2015.

Stay Safe in Summer As another hot summer arrives Penrith Council is urging residents to be vigilant and stay safe against possible high temperatures, fires, storms or floods. Council plays key roles in supporting emergency service agencies during local emergencies to get important information out quickly during times of crisis. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said Council and emergency service agencies have key roles and responsibilities during disasters, as do the residents of Penrith. “We want to help make our residents more resilient during emergency events, and focus on, as well as prepare for and deal with, events such as storms, fire and flood, which happen more around this time of year, Councillor Fowler said. During the upcoming summer, Council will promote useful information for residents on social media such as Facebook and Twitter as well as in local newspapers and on local radio. We will also give useful links to emergency service agency websites where more detailed information is available. During an emergency such as a bush fire, you may receive an emergency warning via your telephone. The Emergency Alert system is a national system which can deliver voice message warnings via landline or text messages to mobile telephones. There is no need to register. Messages are sent to landline telephones, such as home phones, based on the handset location. Please follow all instructions from emergency services. To keep your finger on the pulse and receive regular Facebook and Twitter posts, follow the links on Council’s website’s home page at www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday and 8am on the Fourth Sunday

Amongst all the festivity of the Christmas season there exists much anxiety. Suffering, pain, loneliness, homelessness, those caught up in domestic stress etc. are but a few examples of the reality of everyday living. On the wider scene the world at large is not at peace and as the Psalmist of old asked ‘why do the nations rage’ so to do we ask the same question. At Saint David’s Church on Christmas Eve at 11pm a service of nine Lessons and Carols is held prior to the midnight Christ Mass: the service of Holy Communion when the individual joins in community at the meal which Jesus the Christ asked to be continued following his execution. His Resurrection ensures that he is always present at the meal. As we contemplate this fact the nine Lessons and Carols outlines the “old, old story of Jesus and his Love”. Now we often fall back on the Platonic concept of a deity ‘out there’ who somehow created the universe and the life we share. Christmas however emphasizes a deity who is amongst us, contemporary in the process of history, who absorbed humanity in the person of his Son. In his humanity Jesus the Christ attracted people to him by the example of his life. He taught and showed people how to live. Some who were attracted to him however after a while withdrew. This withdrawal was often based on the unwillingness of people to give of themselves, to see that life means to give and not to take and to walk honestly. Those who remained with Jesus, although fleeing in fear at the time of his execution,

were caught up in his resurrection. As with Saint Thomas the great doubter, they came to the realization that indeed Jesus the Christ was indeed Lord and God. Beyond his humanity is the reality of deity. So Christmas celebrates this wonder. The technical theological term is ‘incarnation’: humanity absorbed into deity who we call Emmanuel- God with us. Now Christmas is an old English word which became common in the English language during the 12th century and the festival itself dates from 336 CE. It commenced in Rome and slowly was adopted by the churches in the West and East. The date of December 25th has no historical proof. It was chosen by some early scholars who argued back from the Conception of Jesus. Other early scholars argued that it was instituted to mitigate the then festivities directed to the pagan worship of the Roman Sun-god. The elaborate meals emerged from these festivities and for many years in Australian history the traditional English baked turkey and vegetables was a common practice despite the hot weather in December. A Holy and Merry Christmas to all readers. Rev John Hebblewhite

With you Every Step of the Way

We all Want to be Remembered. Are we CRAZY? Christmas is only a couple of weeks away. It’s a difficult time for people who have lost a loved. We try so desperately to remember them without looking like we’re crazy. That’s the problem in our western culture, we only get a short time to grieve, and then we are meant live our lives as if nothing has happened. This month I thought I would share a part of my story with you. When I had my twin girls at 24 weeks gestation, my sister came to the hospital with a necklace (engraved with their names) for each of them. She was the only person who celebrated the birth of my girls with me. Everyone else felt sorry for me or was waiting for them to die. The youngest of my twin girls died 4 days later and the eldest is 28 years old with a family of her own. My daughter’s necklace reminds me that she lived, that she was acknowledged as living and was a part of this world for a short time. I don’t think my sister knows how much this meant to me. We all want to be remembered and that we mattered. We want the memory of us to carry on through the generations. The way I keep my daughter’s memory alive is to put an extra x (kiss) on cards; I buy an ornament for each of my children (living and dead) to put on the Christmas tree; planted special flowers; garden ornaments; wrote letters; created a scrapbook with my hopes and dreams for her. These are but a few things I’ve done to remember her. I love people speaking her name and remembering her. I wish for you that Christmas will be where you can remember your loved one the way you need to and not feel crazy about doing it. Say their name, do what you feel is necessary, remember them and enjoy doing it. As they say, Merry Christmas (or whatever your celebration is) and have a happy and safe New Year. 5 minutes with BRITTANIE SHIPWAY I had the chance to catch a quick 5 minutes with local (and truly wonderful) singer and songwriter, Brittanie Shipway who is set to release a new single this month. Here's what she had to say. What is the name of your new single? It’s Over When and where will it be released? December 16, with an exclusive Single Launch at Hanks Seafood Restaurant in Penrith Panthers. (Hop onto Brittanie’s Facebook page for tickets) What are the musical influences behind the single? I definitely wanted my first single to be a big pop ballad, something that showed off vocal ability but still had relatable content. It’s a cross between an Ariana Grande and Jessica Mauboy ballad; it’s a different sound from the musical theatre that people heard from me on The Voice, but it’s a song that encapsulates a lot of the pop charts at the moment. Where will the music video be filmed? It was filmed last month and set on the beautiful Fernhill Estate; it just seemed like the perfect setting for the single.

ď ˛Photo Courtesy of Blueprint Studios

Will you be releasing the single on iTunes? It’s Over will debut in iTunes on December 16 and the music video will be available on my YouTube channel (Brittanie Shipway) before it hits the silver screen! There’ll be heaps of giveaways and prizes available on my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts before Christmas, so make sure you follow to keep up to date. Tell us about your plans for 2015. There are so many opportunities on the horizon, it’s just about going after them! Songwriting is definitely something I would like to pursue further; I’m currently working on a jazz-pop song along the lines of a Meghan Trainor and Paloma Faith. I’ve also fell in love with the world of cabaret, and would love to follow in my coach (from The Voice Australia) Kylie’s footsteps and perform at next year’s Mardi Gras! I can’t wait to dip my toes back into my roots and start acting again‌ Watch out Neighbours! Christmas is just around the corner, what is your fondest Christmas memory? This is a really hard one! Every year my family get together and put on the best Christmas celebration ever. My Pa takes the kids out on a pony driven Santa sled, and everyone brings their best dishes. You never leave Christmas at our house on an empty stomach!

Jordan Springs Residents Group Update The Jordan Springs Residents Group has been very active over the past few months (particularly as we are only a volunteer group), and would like to outline all we have achieved in 2014.

Achievements • For the safety of residents, Council has installed ‘No Stopping’ signs along Watergum Drive near Watergum Park. This area has been deemed by Council as unsafe for passing vehicles; • The Residents Group has also been approached about providing off street parking at Watergum park and we are speaking with Councillor Prue Car about this; • The Residents Group is still negotiating with Council about installing ‘No Stopping’ signs along the Shopping Centre side of Tyler Street and along Lakeside Parade in front of the Shopping Centre. Councillor Prue Car has been working with Council on our behalf to finalise installation of these signs; • A Community Notice Board was installed in the Shopping Centre; • Security at the Shopping Centre has been arranged also as a result of representation from the Residents Group; • Approval has been given by Council with the help of Mayor Fowler and Busways for new Bus stops to be located on Lakeside Parade outside the Shopping Centre entrance. Council also wants the existing stops on The JS Boulevard to remain. A commencement date for this work is still to be determined; • Council agreed to look into residents’ safety concerns for vehicle and pedestrians crossing on the corner of Lakeside Parade and Watergum Road. Mayor Ross Fowler came out and reviewed residents’ concerns and worked with Council to alleviate this problem. Council’s best option was to install traffic lights on that corner.

In determining their response to residents’ safety request, Council also took into account concerns for parents and children crossing the corner to get to/from Little Zac’s Academy Pre-School. It was determined their safety on that corner will be a lottery. Work should commence on this during December/ January; • Residents have a concern with the health of gum trees in Sandstock Cres, Brook Street and other streets in the Watergum area. The Residents Group approached Council about this and they came out to inspect and agreed all these trees are of an inferior quality and diseased. Council will speak to Lend Lease about this and have confirmed to the Residents Group that work will begin shortly to replace these trees with something (not gum trees) more appropriate; • We were approached by the Shopping Centre Management and Shop Owners for help to obtain approval from Council to install ‘Shopping Centre’ signs on the corner of Northern Road and the Jordan Springs Boulevard. Councillor Prue Car helped us with Council to gain this approval and the signs were installed last week; For more information on major works still being negotiated please contact us: Jordan Springs Residents Group, Jordanspringsgroup@gmail.com. 10 Tips for Encouraging Kids to Eat Veggies! Summer time = Salads. Yay! No more stodgy veggies. It’s time for fresh, crunchy, and healthy salads. No? The kids are not so enthusiastic? The headline of a recent publication spoke of “Battling Penrith’s Bulge”. You are probably tired of hearing it, but Penrith has very high obesity rates. They top the State. 60% of our adults and kids are obese. And I know that it’s not a favourite topic in Penrith because every time I post something about eating healthy food on facebook (Parenting In Penrith) I get very few views on that post compared to other topics about parenting. But encouraging your kids to eat more healthy food is just as much about good parenting as listening, setting limits, and providing guidance and support. Here are 10 tips for getting kids to eat more veggies based on the research… 1. Google “Dr Ellyn Satter” and have a read about her work on “the division of responsibility”. It’s your responsibility to offer good tucker, it’s your child’s responsibility to eat it. Check it out, and stop offering your kids chicken nuggets and chips every night because “that’s all they will eat”. 2. Food process the veggies and put them in your homemade rissoles, spaghetti bolognaise, and nachos. It’s up to you whether you tell the kids or not. I prefer to be honest with my kids. 3. They are watching you. Be a good role model for how to eat healthy. Sorry Mums, but it has been found that you are the biggest influence on your child’s eating habits. The Cancer Council NSW has found that 95% of adults are not getting enough veggies on a daily basis. Kids are far too savvy these days to swallow the line “do as I say not as I do”. 4. Have meals at the table together as a family. Switch off the TV and the other screens and devices. 5. Offer cheese, dips, dressing, and sauces with veggies and salad. 6. Talking to children about the science of healthy eating helps them to make better food choices. Talking about how veggies grow, vitamins, minerals, fibre, fats, protein, the body, energy, and brain power, has been shown to increase veggie consumption even in pre-schoolers. But remember, it’s no good just telling them, you also have to show them (tip number 3). 7. Give veggies cool names like “Xray Carrots” and “Tomato Bursts”. And believe it or not, watching Popeye has been shown to increase children’s interest in eating spinach. It just goes to show how much television influences our children. One of my sons started eating better after watching the documentary “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead”. 8. Offer veggies over and over again, so they get used to them. Give lots of descriptive praise when your kids taste and eat veggies. 9. Get kids involved in growing, shopping for, choosing, preparing, and cooking veggies. 10. Offering water at meal time instead of juice, gives kids a better taste for eating veggies. Juice has lots of sugar and no fibre, and isn’t a good drink for kids. Good luck!

School Dates Public Schools Last Day - Wednesday December 17 Back to School - Tuesday January 27 Private Schools Last Day - Friday December 19 Back to School - Wednesday January 28 Intended as a general guide only.

From the Principal’s Desk...Llandilo Public School Throughout Term 4 our staff and students have been incredibly busy. Aside from the teaching and learning that takes place on a daily basis, our staff organised many extra curricular activities and programs that were of benefit to our wonderful students. A few weeks ago, our Stage 3 students attended a week long camp at Berry. Our students engaged in many activities including kayaking and riding on the giant swing. When they returned to school, they were exhausted but exhilarated at the same time. Our Pre-School Early Learning at Llandilo Program (PELL) finished in early November and judging from the feedback received, it was a very beneficial program for all concerned. We will certainly be hosting it again in 2015. Our Kindergarten Orientation program also took place last month. We welcomed many new families to the school and the children all settled well, as they engaged in educational classroom activities. The aim of the program was to aid the transition from home to school and judging by the happy faces that we saw, the program has certainly proved to be a winner. Llandilo PS had four representatives in the District Public Speaking Competition namely Kayla, Daniel, Amber and Rosabelle. They all did exceptionally well to make it to the final and I congratulate Kayla, who won her respective competition. Well done to all concerned. Many students in Years 3-6 engaged in the CARES Road Safety Program. Judging by the students’ recounts, everyone had a great time whilst learning some very important road safety information. I’m sure our students will now think twice before riding their bikes without a helmet on. As the year draws to a close, I would like to thank everyone for their support over the past 6 months. I was appointed to Llandilo PS as the ‘caretaker’ until the substantive principal was appointed. From the start of 2015, Mrs Deborah Getley will take up her new position and I know the whole school community will make her feel very welcome. Joan Smyth, Acting Principal

Get Ready, Get Set and Go-Kart in Penrith! Penrith will now add racing to the suite of adrenaline charged activities available in the area, with stage one of a new go-kart and motorsport centre now open in Luddenham. After eight months of construction and several setbacks due to extreme weather conditions, stage one of the Luddenham Raceway development opened in November. The first stage of the development includes a 600m procircuit and a 200m track for junior racers aged 8-14. State of the art timing systems, track safety and lighting systems have been installed and special designed go-karts imported from Germany will be driven on the tracks. A high-tech visitor centre has also been built on site, which includes a cafe and lounge area where family, friends and colleagues can watch each other race on large screens. The visitor centre also has a large function room which is available to hire for parties and conferences. There are also plans to finalise construction of stages two and three of the development next year. This includes a 1400m track for driver training and other motor sports activities and also a Paintball Park. Penrith City Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said it’s great to see another thrill seeking tourist attraction open in Penrith. “Penrith is well established as an adventure destination where visitors can sky dive, go white-water rafting, wakeboarding or get behind the controls of a jet aircraft, Cr Fowler said. “Now, whether you’re young or old, an experienced driver or a novice; if you have a passion or an interest in racing, you can put your pedal to the metal at a world-class racing facility right here in Penrith. For more information: Phone: 0419 207 421 Email: info@luddenhamraceway.com Visit: facebook.com/luddenhamraceway

What’s Happening at ........................ Henry Fulton Public School ? Grandparents’ Day was a huge success at Henry Fulton Public School when it was held last month. Lots of grandparents were able to attend and were entertained by the Year 1 students and our four fantastic dance groups. Afterwards, our special guests were able to visit the children in their classrooms to look at their wonderful work. Our amazing P&C did a wonderful job organising the special morning tea with delicious goodies donated by our school community. We also held our Kindergarten Orientation morning for our new 2015 students. Lots of excited and nervous people joined us, with the children participating in fun activities in the classrooms and the parents learning lots of new information about our school. We welcome them all to the Henry Fulton community. Also in November, eighteen students from Kindergarten to Year 6 joined in with the launch of the K-Mart Wishing Tree for 2014. Our students entertained the shoppers singing, Paint you a song; greatly enjoying this experience. There are still many fantastic events happening before the end of the year and our students are looking forward to them with great excitement! Weight loss Hypnosis Transform your life

Can Hypnosis Rewire Sugar Cravings? With all of the weight loss options around today, it’s no surprise that some have looked to hypnosis to shed extra kilos. Successful hypnosis advocates say that it’s helped them to reshape their thoughts about food, a key factor for maintaining weight loss. Sound interesting? Here are a few things to consider. We all know being over weight is unhealthy, so what stops us? Harvard University research shows up to 90% of the mind is unconscious. This is why when our brains are firing excitedly to ‘sugar’ its hard to break old patterns. Hypnosis is an altered state that allows new neural pathways to be rewired and change your thoughts about food. Before you agree to give Hypnosis a shot check your clinician is a registered member of the AHA.

HEALTH MATTERS

SUFFERING constant BACK PAIN? Want to ENJOY LIFE again?

Article by: Rhonda Rolfe - Harmonising Health Ph: 0430 047 421 E: rhonda@harmonisinghealth.com.au W: www.harmonisinghealth.com.au

Oils Ain’t Oils I’m sure you have heard this before in relation to engine oils, but it also applies to essential oils. Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be powerfully fragrant. They are non water-based phytochemicals made up of volatile aromatic compounds. Essential oils are very clean, almost crisp, to the touch and are immediately absorbed by the skin. Pure, unadulterated essential oils are translucent and range in colour from crystal clear to deep blue. In addition to their intrinsic benefits to plants and being beautifully fragrant to people, essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Modern scientific study and trends toward more holistic approaches to wellness are driving a revival and new discovery of essential oil health applications. Whether you diffuse oils through the house or office to achieve a nice aroma, or for the many health benefits they give, it is important to choose good quality oils. As with perfumes, cheap oils can contain a lot of chemicals which are not ideal to be inhaling or putting on the skin. It is advisable to choose pure, organic oils and if possible, oils which are of therapeutic grade. Heating oils is not the best choice either. When they are heated, they can burn easily as well as lose a lot of their therapeutic value. It is better to use a good quality oil diffuser, where there is no heat and minute particles of the oil are diffused in to the air. Choose your oils wisely.

TALKING HEALTH & FITNESS with MERINDA HUSKING designerbody P: 0421 773 984 E: designerbody@live.com W: designerbody.com.au

It’s that time of the year when you need to stay fired up and focused on your results, before the Christmas break. You will soon be spending quality time with family and friends over Christmas and the New Year, and enjoying all the great food and drinks that go with it. So now is the most important time to continue to train hard and eat clean!!! Because in 3 weeks time we will all be over indulging during the festive season. Which isn’t a bad thing as it is only once a year, so enjoy! I thought I’d share a few tips to help you through the next few weeks. 1. Preparation: Simple to do but very important! At the beginning of your week prepare your food. This includes making a shopping list, getting to the shops and doing as much food preparation as possible on the weekend to help you get through the busy week. 2. Lock in your workouts: book in the times and days you can allocate to workout and get to them!! Arrange to meet a friend for that little extra motivation if needed. 3. Choose which festive events you’ll treat yourself to: leading up to Christmas, you may find your weekends filled with lots of social events. I want you to enjoy catching up with family and friends, but, all those dinners, drinks and long lunches can get in the way of achieving your goals. I recommend picking only one event where you can enjoy those extra calories. Still attend all your social events but ensure you’re only treating yourself once over the weekend. Following these 3 simple tips will ensure you are able to make the most of the festive season without undoing all your hard work! We will be taking a short break over Christmas but will be back with our 8 week New Year fitness/weight loss Challenge starting January 12th 2015. I would like to wish you all Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year!! Merinda, Designer Body

New Veterinarians

We are pleased to announce we have 2 part time veterinarians joining our team. Kellie Lorschy grew up in the western suburbs and attended Rooty Hill High obtaining dux at her high school. She graduated from Sydney University with First Class Honours in 1995 and along the way obtained Honours in a Veterinary Research Degree as well. Kellie then went on to practice in mixed animal practice in Canada and then came back to Australia to practice small animals in various locations across Western Sydney. Kellie has experienced many facets of veterinary medicine. She has worked as a technical veterinarian for a large pharmaceutical company, worked in sales and marketing

in veterinary pathology and as a marketing manager in a veterinary support organisation. Kellie not only works for us part time since October 2014, but is training veterinary nurses at Richmond TAFE and has done so for the last 9 years – she even trained some of our nurses! Kellie’s passion is providing clients well informed options for best possible health outcomes for their four legged members of the family. She has a family of her own with 2-legged and 4-legged members. Benjamin Yap has always dreamed of being a veterinarian. As a primary school child in his hometown of Perth, Western Australia, his passion for medicine and animals was very obvious to teachers and his parents. As one of the top students in his school, he went directly to Murdoch University and graduated with his veterinary degree in 2002 before he decided to spread his wings on his "eastern states adventures". He has worked in mixed, small animal and emergency practice in Victoria, Canberra and finally suburban Sydney since mid 2009. After nearly 12 years in the veterinary game, he still works in the field he loves.Ben attends nearly every further education lecture to enhance his knowledge to help his clients, both human and animal. He has two lovely cats at home (named Delta and Kingston) and has a lovely fiancÊe named Alexandra, who he is due to marry in the spring of 2015. Ben joined the team in November 2014. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet. com.au.
